It would be good to see these soldiers treated better by us...apparently the Welsh are now offering Ghurkas jobs driving buses...the wages are low but Ghurkas are happy to accept the work. Let's hope the pay is not so poor that they cannot afford to move their families over here to be with them. One would hope that Ghurkas who do settle get their pensions increased to be in line with other ex soldiers....maybe they do....I do know we have a lot to thank the Ghurkas for.

Following on from Ghurkas as bus drivers...here's a (TIC?) bit from an article by Oliver Pritchett entitled 'Steady the Bus!' (available at telegraph.co.uk but you need to register to read...)
>> It would be the height of churlishness not to mention the double-decker drivers who were once members of the SAS. I make it a rule to travel with them whenever I am in Manchester. They are so well trained they can pretty well make themselves invisible - making brilliant use of their surroundings, they edge up the street behind a removal lorry, then they are able to dodge past the queue, using a dustcart as cover. It's one of the things I'm most proud of in my life that I have ridden on a Manchester bus and learned the true meaning of the drivers' motto, "Who Swerves Wins". >>
********* You lucky, lucky, lucky people... You know who you are!! Yes...you!! The ones with The Increment...

There are many stories of the Gurkhas, their stealth and lack of fear which involve the Khukri. During World War 2, Rifleman Thaman Gurung used to go off alone at night stalking Germans and quietly beheading them with his Khukri. The effect on German morale was devastating. Many VCs were won by Gorkhas over the years, most of them involved the deadly use of the khukri.
The famous khukri carried by Gurkha soldiers is a a side-arm that complements the main fire-arm. The main fire-arm carried by the Indian Army is the INSAS. As a weapon the Khukri has been used with deadly effect. The cutting action is an upward diagonal swipe with the neck being the main target. The blade is thick on the outside edge making the wide part heavy like an axe. The khukri is never thrown. It is said that a Gurkha does not unsheathe the knife without drawing blood.
It is generally 16 or 17 inches long, the blade being 12 to 13 inches. The haft is made of wood, buffalo horn, bone or ivory and The khukri carried by modern day Gurkhas (post World War 2) is smaller, being more a traditional part of the uniform and a deadly weapon. There are two small 'mini-khukris' in the sheath; one is for sharpening the blade the other is for skinning.

borisette- " the other is for skinning" That of course makes complete sense as one would suspect the Khukri is too unwieildy for food prep! Whilst on the subject of Ghurkas have a look a this man's medals...awesome guts and determination some people have..... http://users.skynet.be/hendrik/hall/Hal-Ghale.html Captain Lalgopal Ghale, 2nd Ghurka Rifles- "on Sept. 3-4, 44, during an attack on Monte San Giovani in the Adriatic Sector of the Gothic line, this NCO showed extreme courage, initiative and devotion to duty while leading his section. He was commanding a section in the left hand leading platoon of the forward company. Their objective was a strongly held enemy position on the bluff overlooking Auditore Village from the west. During the initial attack Naik (Corporal)Lalgopal was shot through the calf by an enemy MG, but he fought on to the foot of the cliff. There he found 3 enemy MG's in position above him firing at the remainder of the company. He carried out a personal reconnaissance and found a way up the cliff. He then led the remainder of his section up the cliff and assaulted the enemy position in the flank. 2 MG's were silenced and the crew of the 3rd fled; Lalgopal himself wiping out the first post with grenades and killing one man from the second post with his kukri . Though wounded he carried on with leading his section in the second phase of the attack, distinguishing himself repeatedly in the fierce hand to hand fighting. His section did excellent work repelling an enemy counter-attack and he skillfully withdrew his section when ordered. Not until his section was dug in in their new position did he allow himself to be evacuated to the RAP. The bearing of the NCO throughout the action, his dash and determination to close with, and kill the enemy were an inspiration to all men around him and in great part contributed to the success of the operation."

Has it been discussed here yet? Amazon.com lets you preorder it but there's no list price for it yet. No description of the story line, either. Anybody know anything?
>>By Majorette (Tuesday, 22 Jun 2004 16:29)

>>By Majorette (Tuesday, 22 Jun 2004 16:33)
"i'll swap your r1 for it, how about that for a deal lol" Nem...you drive a hard bargain ;-) Never one to miss a deal eh? (But why would you wanna ride a girls bike?)
"hey it's worth a try" Oh yes!! Everyone should try it and then go buy one from the shop near Maj coz they're selling 'em at near half price("...Bikergirl's £5000 Yamaha R1"). Unless...wait up!! Does that mean some bar steward went and put mine up for sale whilst I was away? <sulky pout>
Back to Ghurkas (ah yes, there was a reason for this post), another book by the excellent John Parker here... http://www.john-parker.co.uk/thegurkhas.htm (And whilst I'm on him, here's one about the ones I like best... http://www.john-parker.co.uk/commandos.htm)
Maj...yep...Alpha Force is the childrens series. He's knocking out 2 of them a year, along with one for the 'grown-ups'. What a busy man!! What a lot to proof read (I'm still available btw...)

Are you telling me that if I buy 'em State-side and sell 'em in the UK, I could double my money??
WTF am I doing wasting my time in graduate school? I suddenly feel the urge to learn everything there is to know about motorcycles...
>>By Majorette (Tuesday, 22 Jun 2004 20:41)
Well, all who have read The Increment so far seem to have similar conclusions but won't express them here for now. He really should let some of us proof read the next one, then it would be even better!
>>By camban (Wednesday, 23 Jun 2004 12:41)
Oh Cam I don't think he'd be daft enough to let us proof read after reading back over this board. Mind you I'm up for proof reading and amending: Matt Browning in hotpants.... Well it wouldn't harm his chances with the ladies!

********** Advance warning...BBC1 Weds for the next few weeks at 8pm. Pushed To The Limit... (Britains Toughest Family). With the ever lovely CR...
In me Ma's paper it said: "He never stops does he? [...] His entire life seems to revolve around non-stop toughness. [...] It's all very impressive I grant you, but doesn't he ever long for the occasional spot of flower-arranging?" I wonder???
BBC press release for next week: "Five surviving families face a gruelling Marine yomp." But then I'm lookihg forward to..."the Marines have some surprises in store." I bet they do!!
>>By bikergirl (Saturday, 3 Jul 2004 18:20)
Pretty good, that TV programme, non-stop toughness indeed! The next one with the Marines should be even better. There he is, full frontal to camera, no pixilated face, with the confident delivery of a TV professional, as I said in another place, the day of ex-SAS men needing obscurity is long gone.
And BG, a loose screw? I visualise throwing a sausage down the M1, is that the correct mental image?

Hi!
I'm fairly new to Flork and Chris Ryan and completely new to this discussion board, which I find very interesting!
I have a question (you might have been through this one a long time ago, if that is the case perhaps someone could just guide me to the right page?): In "The One That Got Away", new edition published in 2003, Ryan's added an introduction (copyright 2001), where he comments on a book by Mark the Kiwi, which, according to Ryan, would be about B20. Ryan says that it's a NEW book by Coburn, but I haven't able to find any other books than "Soldier Five" - do anyone know of any other books by "the Kiwi" (co-authored by Stan)?
>>By BanditQueen (Thursday, 8 Jul 2004 20:30)
yeh that is the same book, soldier five
