I'd like to add my thoughts on what you said.
Firstly, I agree that both Ryan and McNab have probably added a little more spice to their stories, but you have to remember this is the literary world now not an army debrief. Wrong as it is how many non-fiction books have you read with 100% accuracy? I haven't read one, they all give in to the odd embellishment here and there.
As for Vince Phillips, we will never know the truth as to whether CR's account is truthful. But you can see why people want to believe it's not. He was an experienced SAS soldier, and a Falklands veteran - but we have no idea what his state of mind was when he was on the job. As much as many people may not want to admit it, maybe he was not 100% committed - think logically about this without adding any emotional arguments and you'll see that it is possible.
I would love to see the official de-briefing but we never will. The number of casualties was actually supplied by American intelligence (dumb for having taken it at face value). But one thing that concerns me is would the Iraqi soldiers / authorities be honest about the number of dead? Is anybody? Every country (including us Brits) is guilty of using only positive propaganda during war time. For me Iraq would be no different, therefore I don't believe their official the patrol took no casualties. But neither do I believe they took 250 (seems just a tad ridiculous).
But truth or lie, the books are written and the authors stand by their accounts. Also, the more controversial books that are written about the patrol, the more the originals will sell, every one wins...Role on Soldier Five.

Woo hoo now he's on page three - get that t-shirt off CR ha ha.
>>By Bethan (Tuesday, 29 Jul 2003 15:23)
Bethan,
I totally agree with you.

so do i!
>>By christina (Tuesday, 29 Jul 2003 19:33)
Good response Beth... what more can I say... Still have to read Land of Fire.. is it worth it?
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 29 Jul 2003 20:07)
you just reminded me i haven't read that one either.
>>By christina (Tuesday, 29 Jul 2003 20:30)
Ooooh, now this should be interesting!
Here's a program BBC1 is planning:
"Former SAS soldier and best-selling author Chris Ryan features in Hunting Chris Ryan, which finds him abandoned in three of the world's most hostile environments as Special Forces soldiers try to track him down."
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3106119.stm
(I'm sorry, but when I read this, I couldn't help but think of the recent news about Hunting Bambi.... LOL!)
>>By am-i-binned (Saturday, 2 Aug 2003 15:28)
Boy, I do hope those hunters either do not involve those who were knocking on his door after TOTGA was published (because of Vince), or he made amends with them... However.. they did not say how many episodes they planned, did they?? Could be just one...
Let me finish with apologies for things said that are offending to any of the posters/lurkers or persons concerned.
>>By Lynn (Saturday, 2 Aug 2003 21:35)
This might help to explain my ref to Hunting Bambi. I apologize, but this really was the first thing that crossed my warped little mind when I read "Hunting Chris Ryan".... LOL! .... And worst of all, even though it's embarrassing, I still think it's funny!.... :oD
'Hunting Bambi' Safari Was a Hoax
"Las Vegas (AP) — A promoter who offered to take men on "Hunting for Bambi" safaris in which they could hunt down naked young women with paintball guns admits that it was a hoax and now faces misdemeanor charges....[and] found himself in the crosshairs of women's groups after he told a Las Vegas TV station that he was selling reservations to men willing to pay $5,000 to $10,000 to hunt down naked women in the desert."

Thanx AIB, missed that news or it just wasn't in the news over here. Can see why you were grinning now... but I think there's not much chance there will be any similarity to the CR chase. My guess is if it involves naked women CR will be more likely to be one of the hunters...however if the hunters were to be the naked... never mind.. I think I should leave this one well alone.. ;-)
>>By Lynn (Sunday, 3 Aug 2003 17:32)
Yepper, Lynn! You definitely understand why I was laughing! Ooooh, the possible scenarios! LOL!!! Gives a whole new meaning to the question the question: "Are you game?" LOL!!!!!

A long interesting audio interview with CR (fundamentally personal/SAS related even though it's linked to Covert Strike game):
www.codemasters.com/igi2/english/chris_ryan.php
Especially enjoyed hearing CR comment on Asher's TRB20. Also, CR has a very ... uhm... "descriptive (?)"... take on AM's version of the B20 mission. lol!
Note: Interview seems to end abruptly, but I downloaded twice again with same results so problem seems to be theirs...
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 5 Aug 2003 17:15)
While still in "link/audio" mode, and referring back to previous discussions here of CR's SAS Fitness Book, there's a nice interview on Relax with a Book about his fitness book (search author: Ryan):
www.relaxwithabook.com/interviews/Authorslist.cfm
(Note: When I tested this link to be sure it worked, I thought the search came back with blank results at first -- you might have to scroll down the screen a little bit to see the search results.)

Just finished Zero option and stand by, stand by i have to say they were excellant books!

Lynn
You should read Land of Fire I really enjoyed it, read it in a couple of days.
When is that hunter program on?? Will they be currently serving soldiers if so is CR past it? Nice to see if he's still as fit.
>>By Bethan (Monday, 11 Aug 2003 09:28)
Hi, Bethan...
According to the article about BBC One's announced Autumn 2003 schedule, Hunting Chris Ryan is supposedly planned for "later this year."
Hmmm... I think CR's probably quite fit enough (considering his SAS fitness book and all) but it's almost too scary thinking about CR being pursued by currently serving SAS! The incentive to find him would be totally outrageous! And not necessarily because of anything to do with hard feelings about his books. Just think what would it say about the SAS if CR (now an established civvie in his 40's) manages to elude them?!? Ouch!
>>By am-i-binned (Monday, 11 Aug 2003 21:34)
Would civvie street have made that much difference? For me, I think he'll still have all the skills but can he have maintained a high enough level of fitness? Probably yes but for the biggest coach potato in Wales I'd rather think no it makes him more human. With all these books and tv things maybe he's given up the bodyguarding, sounded pretty boring anyway.
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 14 Aug 2003 09:43)
Oooh if anyone's out there my talk box for Andy McNab has gone how do I get it back??? Maybe my computer wants me to do some work......
>>By Bethan (Tuesday, 19 Aug 2003 09:53)
Wow, just ended Land of fire. Thought it was great, really enjoyed it. Bravo to CR.
Yesterday I listend to his interview, he has such a funny accent. Looking at the photographs down below I thought he looked a bit chubbier too, maybe he needs some exercise... ooops I'm out of here. Ooh the interview is the one amibinned wrote on top, the codemaster one.
>>By borisette (Friday, 22 Aug 2003 18:38)
I loved Land of Fire too it made me forget my hangover so it must have been good. Have you read the Watchman? That's even better. What looks chubby down below??
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 28 Aug 2003 09:59)
Well CR looks a bit chubby don't you think?? I haven't read the Watchman, I guess I'll have to order it soon. How about Greed, anybody read that?
>>By borisette (Thursday, 28 Aug 2003 18:53)
Not read Greed but my library's just got it so it won't be long, I've heard on the grapevine it's one of his best - hope they're right. Yeah he does look a bit chubby, how's he going to outrun people in his new TV show? Maybe he's done his fitness book thing and toned up a little. He does have a nice voice though.
>>By Bethan (Friday, 29 Aug 2003 10:03)
Well here's one for the adventurous amongst you but you need children between 14 and 17 bummer. Found this link on bbc website for another Chris Ryan show to find toughest family in Britain, don't ask me how just sort of stumbled upon it couldn't find what I wanted to though.
www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/lifestyle/2003/08/ tough_family.shtml
If you get in quick you might just make the trial weekends. I'd only do it if he promised to carry me (too lazy to walk/run/jump around/climb etc. you get the idea.) Anyone up for it? Now who would be mother.....
>>By Bethan (Friday, 29 Aug 2003 15:50)
Ooooh, man! I'd do it in a heartbeat, Bethan! Only thing is I'd have to hire a substitute family! Mine think I'm off the deep end already so they'd have no qualms heaving me overboard when CR wasn't looking... LOL!!! Adoption, anyone?
>>By am-i-binned (Friday, 29 Aug 2003 17:49)
In all respect to Ryan, McNab and all the other SAS lads, I must say that I can sympathize with Ken Connors (and Peter Ratcliffe's for that matter) views about ex SAS soldiers reducing the proffesional reputation of the Regiment by doing all kinds of "bark for a dollar" projects in civvie street. Reducing is perhaps too strong of a word, but I hope you all get my drift.
It seems that Ryan has taken it to full lenghts if the above statements are true. He's already done Ultimate Force. Now he's involved in two reality shows - one about serving members of the Regiment hunting him down, the other about finding the most fit family in the UK ?!?
Ey, Chris!! This is getting a bit out of hand, don't you think mate!?
Btw, Chris has always been my "favourite" guy, so that's perhaps why my military heart is bleeding......
Still, Barry Davies started doing this stuff before Ryan, and Davies goes for being one the really "old sweats" in the Regiment. (As you know, he's written numerous SAS survival handbooks and similar).
>>By ortlieb (Monday, 1 Sep 2003 19:34)
I'm bored and I have to say if CR ever reads this Tenth Man Down is definitely the worst book. I'm only halfway through and I already wish I was at the end, thank God he picked his game up!
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 4 Sep 2003 13:26)
Well Sorry CR, but I've gone off you! Doing all these tv programms, aren't you exagerating things a bit now. It's getting pathetic really.
>>By borisette (Thursday, 4 Sep 2003 20:50)
Well the fame-hungry Chris Ryan express rolls on! There's a book to go with the 'Hunting Chris Ryan' series called The Ultimate Survival Guide (hasn't Barry Davies already been there done that? How many SAS-inspired survival guides do we really need?)
He'll teach you survival techniques for the desert, rainforest, arctic and urban environments, how to find food, shelter and water. How to navigate / cope with injury and help you think clearly through hunger and exhaustion. And most importantly the importance of a positive mental attitude.
Yes he knows what he's talking about no-one can argue against that but how about an original idea? I wonder what the title of the book to go with the toughest family jaunt will be called.
>>By Bethan (Friday, 5 Sep 2003 10:50)
Oh last one before signing off - he's off on a book tour of the UK next month if you want to meet him and he's actually coming to Wales. Might be a good time to practice my running ha ha. Anyone up for a harsh question and answer session??
>>By Bethan (Friday, 5 Sep 2003 15:24)
Hi
Who else is a fan of Ryan books? I'm not up for bashing the bloke. He was a good mate.
