It's very nice to be in agreement now about benefits of offboarding, Buddy... thank you. :o)

"I'd take you skydiving and then we could hold hands at 12,000ft"
Mr McNab...I'd be only too happy to participate...

Ooooh, Bethan, you've captured the ultimate difference! Absolutely!!!! LOL!!!!

And now we hear our Graham announcing:

"In the event that for any reason Bikergirl is unable to fulfill her responsibilities as Winner of the Dream Drop with Andy, we will be looking for someone from today's audience who would be willing to volunteer for this frisky assignation, er, uhm, I mean, risky.... So, let's see, do we have anyone here who'd be interested in a one-time dirt dart date?"

Hmmm, in fact.... ;o)

(jumping up and down, waving arms like an idjit...)

Oooh, oooh! I would! I would!

AIB said: "It's very nice to be in agreement now about benefits of offboarding, Buddy... thank you. :o)"

Oh absolutely, AIB, I took a leaf out of your book

Oops Bethan, you said: "Have to say, not interested in Worldwide Friendship via buddy."

I guess you have every right to change tack/friends. Still, I did pass on your previous message to you know who...

Oh oh, it's very difficult to critique two scriptwriters 'directing; same production company ;-)

Did you get an invite to CRs book signing ?, after all he's in our area soon!
I mean, you're here as a fan of his, yes, not just to poke fun?

>>By buddy

Nomad: I'd be very surprised if Birdsong would pass muster here as "reading material". On past refs it would most probably be classed as Heavy Read - too taxing, unlike CR & AM whom twelve year olds adore...Thinking of which, the teen book adventure genre...Has anyone read a CR teen book?

Does anyone have an inkling of what CR's next 'adult' book is about, bearing in mind we have a rough idea of how AM will proceed?

>>By buddy

Now, I never said I read Birdsong - just picked up a used copy and it fell open at all the nookie bits. Saved me a long plod by all accounts then?LOL.

>>By Nomad

Ooops sorry...that B.A.B.E.S message above was from bikergirl
Must've got carried away at the thought of jumping (with) AM...

>>By bikergirl

LOL BABES, and way to go bikergirl....
Ooh well I still have CR, sigh and you've got that bloke with that cardboard on his face...how can he cope with that whilst falling from 12000 ft and holding your hand..? Quite a problem. Maybe you can twinjump, that would be much more fun, giggle giggle...(or is it geminijump, you know ... you jump together but there's only 1 parachute for the 2 'cause the 2 of you are in some way attached)

"I guess you have every right to change tack/friends. Still, I did pass on your previous message to you know who..."

Let's make one thing clear, I haven't changed anything tackwise or other ways. I don't like my friends answering for me, that's how chinese whispers starts, if I don't put up with that in my day to day living, I'm not going to take it here either. One rule for all they say. The point is plain, don't speak for me (if you have, just so you know if you haven't) send them in my direction, I don't bite, I'm incredibly friendly (honest no matter how my last few posts have appeared!) I'm letting that rest now there's only so much moaning people can read! Call me old fashioned but I hate guessing games, they're dangerous and usually not for the person guessing…. (Just look at what charades does to a Christmas Dinner - sorry can't be sensible any more.)

No idea who you know who is, but if I have guessed correctly then he's been and gone babe, in Newport about three weeks ago. I didn't go, late night working on a Wednesday. Would have liked to hear his talk though. What message???? Was it sensible? (hah yeah right) Any one got a spare memory? Can I borrow it? Ta.

And yeah I really like his fiction books (stand alone anyway), mind you leaving that fitness guide right where it is on the shop shelf! (Nearly wrote top shelf - oops).

bikergirl - still can't hear spinning around without giggling....

>>By Bethan

Birdsong is actually on my christmas book list okay get back up off the floor now people, see I can read clever stuff too. I'm not just a pretty face!! (Of course that's a matter of opinion but I'm not going to say I'm ugly am I?)

>>By Bethan

Bethan you said: No idea who you know who is, but if I have guessed correctly then he's been and gone babe, in Newport about three weeks ago.

Well, there you go, such short memory span. Absolutely nothing to do with CR in Newport.

Re invitation: I guess you didn't get one for the charity do...What a pity, would have been nice to end up face to face and I could have reminded you (chinese whisper) who you know who is. Better still, he could have told you himself - introduced with key sentence from B.A.B.E.S production...

Apparently part of B.A.B.E.S will be in the National press, or at least someone is toying with an article about this site. Should make for good publicity, so long as a couple of lawyers don't pick up on a few sticky points, LOL...Then again, it is the season of goodwill, right?

You're right, above "point of order" now closed on Bethan's say so -wouldn't want to bore the masses would we (where? hee hee).

Birdsong: The most memorable part of birdsong is the lack of it, the silence between bombardments....The sheer horror of men and bodyparts stacked up, rotting, the smell - made comprehendable by the writer and, all the more horrifying...Enjoy, but dont read prior to Xmas lunch...

Interview with Seb:

The transcript is apalling - dyslexic typist or drunk backroom girl/boy...

Just a quick off-topic Q, Buddy: Is this the "I, Claudius" Robert Graves?

>>By am-i-binned

While we're off topic the other book I really want to read is The Past is Myself by Christable Bielenberg, basically a British woman's memoirs of life in Germany during WWII. Anyone read it?

Yeah AIB, he wrote I Claudius too.

>>By Bethan

"All men dream, but not equally, those that dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act upon their dreams with open eyes, to make it possible."

(from the aforementioned Seven Pillars of Wisdom)

Oft quoted by those with an affinity for cold and altitude.

Just finished (again...) Touching The Void by Joe Simpson...just in time to go see the film...

>>By bikergirl

Re: Robert Rank Graves: recognised as a British author & classical scholar, but what we mustn't forget, is that "Goodbye to All That" was indeed his autobiography published in 1929.

The remainder of his works were historical novels, as mentioned here/queried: "I, Claudius" 1934, "Claudius the God" 1934

Yep Bikergirl, your quote from "The Seven Pillars of Wisdom" is the best known, most quoted, even by people who've never read the book. Do you know the least quoted, most profound piece of T.E.Lawrence prose?

>>By buddy

Do you know the least quoted, most profound piece of T.E.Lawrence prose?

Doesn't appear that anyone does.......

>>By Bethan

Obviously not, Bethan, re The Seven Pillars of Wisdom? If read the quote wouldn't be missed it is so profoundly, quintissentially, T.E.Lawrence.

Churchill, (Winston) I believe it was he who used the same words during a WW2 speech. Could be wrong on that, it might have been another cabinet minister as heard in historical news footage.

For anyone interested in CR's teen books (content) - he's knocking them out fast alongside his adult stream and not the least bit detrimental to the quality of adult books, as our statements here testify.

>>By buddy

Uhm...

I like this one from T. E. Lawrence:

When asked, "Why do men go to war?" "Because the women are watching."

>>By am-i-binned

Was he not quoting T.S.Eliot in reply to question from Lowell the American journalist.

The actual quote I was expecting to be posted was the dedication in The Seven Pillars of Wisdom: I loved you, so I drew these tides of men into my hands and wrote my will across the sky in stars. To earn you Freedom.

T.E.Lawrence truly believed he was doing his very best for the Arab nations he set out to help, and the legacy of Iraq (Saddam) undermined all that, same as the creation of the State of Israel split Palestine in two and progressive rape of Palestinian lands.

>>By buddy

Although we are primarily here to discuss CR's books and, perhaps, his time served in GW1, it is also interesting to slip back in time to see how the events of WW1 came about, the underlying history of events that lead to modern warfare.

There's a brief piece about Lawrence, about Iraq, and how the Ottoman Empire (Turkish) was overthrown and why the Kurds were/are resolute in their right to want independence from Iraq...

You can read the first chapter or so on the randomhouse website for most of Ryan's books (search for him!!) including three kids ones. I've only ever read the desert extract, but I'd read the rest of it. It reads very much like the adult books - I just hope he's left the sex out ha ha.

Very interesting link. My history of the middle east is appalling, it's about time I started to know what was going on and why.

>>By Bethan

Well I'll wish you a happy new year Mr Ryan. But only if we can have another book like Greed. Thanking you please.

What You Should Wear

Voice over man...
"The SAS. The most feared Regiment in military history. Each soldier trained to overcome all eventualities and survive in any type of environment. Leader of our patrol is retired (!) staff sergeant Eddie Stone, freefall and sniper specialist. With him is demolitions expert John McAleese, the first man on the balcony in the Iranian embassy siege..."

ES "During my time as a combat soldier I learnt many important lessons on survival and the kit needed to achieve long periods of time behind enemy lines.
<pauses dramatically>
During the course of this programme you will learn what it takes to be an SAS Soldier in Disguise or SiD."

ES "The first lesson is to be the grey man, to blend in with your surroundings. We have to be competent at soldiering in the urban jungle as well as the...jungle. This is essential for bg work (no...not her!!). You should be smart but approachable. Mac, the first demonstration please."

Mac walks into camera shot wearing a pink Armani suit with a red tie.

ES "This is unacceptable. The red clashes with the pink and it makes Mac look a bit of a poof. Anybody will think they can have a go. The client will assume he's gay and all hell will break loose. Go and change."

The camera pans to follow Mac of of the room then quickly back to Eddie...in close-up. Eddie's not sure what to do now...the auto-cue has stopped rolling. Luckily for him the wardrobe ladies (he he he...who'd want the job of dressing Mac?) work quickly...

ES "OK. This time SiD Mac will demonstrate"

Mac looks unsure now...is this his cue? Eddie gesticulates and eventually Mac reappears with regulation black suit and black tie.

ES "Right. Think Blues Brothers and you can't go wrong. The colouring is better for SiD Mac. It emphasises his unblemished skin tone and the black means he doesn't look like an extra from the Village People. Accessorise this outfit with some mirror shades and a matching glock handbag, sorry, holster and you're laughing. So easy mate"

Mac just nods. He's not looking very happy.

ES "Disguise is commonly used for undercover surveillance"

This brings a smile to Mac's face.

ES "Mate, I just said undercover...not under the covers"

Mac scowls again.

ES "There have been occasions when I have had to impersonate a female. I'm not very good. My legs are too chunky, and my chest too broad. But Mac, he makes a better go of it. Go and change, mate."

After Mac has left the room, Eddie confides..."He has an excellent pair of legs.."

Mac reappears wearing a black skirt, just above the knee, and a smart purple blouse and matching shoes and handbag. He doesn’t look happy.

ES "Now see what SiD Mac has done here. (Looks at Producer...wondering if SiD is still an appropriate name for this vision of loveliness...) The length of the skirt is ideal and the bias cut is one of the most flattering. The heels slim down his calves and give the illusion of even longer legs. The purple is the perfect shade for him, warm enough to bring some colour to his face but not too warm to drain his pale face. The accessories are important. Only a man would go out with shoes and wallet that don't match. To be convincing he's chosen well, a practical but stylish matching set."

Shouting from outside the studio interrupts proceedings. A familiar, gorgeously well-built figure walks on set in his gold hot-pants.

ES "Look, mate...you've had your one-off TV show...I'm the one pulling them in at right now..."

Chris ignores him an saunters straight up to Mac, slipping a strong arm round his waist and pulling him close, gazing deep into his eyes, toying with the buttons on his blouse. Mac is momentarily impressed by the strength of his arms...

CR "You're looking gorgeous tonight...Eddie's not the one pulling 'em in. Get your coat, pet. You've pulled...me. Prepare yourself for a night of endless passion"

Chris scoops him up in his arms and heads for the door. Mac is in a serious flap, until they pass those wardrobe ladies... A couple of well aimed kicks to the backs of Chris's knees and he's down and so are his prospects for hours of amorous fun.

The wardrobe ladies rapidly exfil with Mac (naturally, a willing participant now...), grabbing labcoats and latex as they leave...
