Ooooh, Lethe, definitely a dilemma! Lynn's solution works for me -- VM yum! VM NS SB AM... alphabet soup! Mm, mm, good! :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 07:23)
Oh Lynn you've sussed me I am Andy McNab's alter-ego. Not sure about VM for Nick Stone I have to say. I know he's a bit old but Mel Gibson (looked very gorgeous in We Were Soldiers). Ah staring into those blue eyes...... Sorry guys!
>>By Bethan (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 11:52)
I watched the BBC-programme "SAS: Are you tough enough - Jungle training" the other day. Holy Mary Mother of God.... This was nothing more than the "SAS"-version of the Eco-challenge for Christ's sake!
I don't understand why the SAS would feel the need to bring their name to these TV-presentations of standard military SOP's/procedures that leave most civilians open-mouthed in awe. Well, they're perhaps not "standard", but they're at least so "high-end" that I haven't been taught the excact same things in my time in the Norwegian Army (recon-unit). They could've used any other "run-of-the-mill" recon-unit to grab a bunch of volunteers, hand out x amounts of paintball-rifles and introduce them to basic contact-drills and SOP's.
It's sad when ex Reg NCO's/troopers use their knowledge gained in Regiment for so obviously commercially driven interests.
1) Books? OK. 2) "Retaliation books" (as I like to call them)? Not so Ok, but perhaps justifiable in certain cases. 3) TV? Often better medium than books, so why not? I limit this viewpoint to instructional/historical programmes. 4) Reality-shows? No f***ing way!!
And here I was, thinking that it wasn't the £'s that was the motivational factor for people wanting to join the Regiment. Perhaps that's an attitude that comes along when you've had so many enemy rounds strafing your trousers-legs. You probably want to cash in the big bucks for sticking your arse on the line or Queen and Country after a given amount of time.....
>>By ortlieb (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 12:11)
Oh my Ortlieb.. you sound shocked.... SAS is hot and anything hot gets 'exhausted' (?? not sure that is the right word..) Anyway, usually after a short period anything hot is replaced by something 'hotter' when boredom attacks.. So maybe they think if we hear SAS too many time, instead of 'SAS, are you tough enough', it'll be SAS it is enough.'' and we all go back to our daily routine.. :o)
>>By Lynn (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 13:02)
My surprise lies not in the public interest of the SAS/special forces, but the Regiment's (or rather - "former members") willingness to participate in these commercial reality-shows...
>>By ortlieb (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 13:11)
Holy Mary Mother of God I love it Ortlieb. The best bit of that show was Eddie Stone demonstrating how to crap - get it your b***s out for the girls!!
Anyone see this too?
Sean Bean, Sunday night, ITV (starring in Henry VIII - classic defiant all action hero role) (((((((drool drool)))))))
Maybe it should be SB for Nick Stone again (even more than Jamie Draven that says something!)
>>By Bethan (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 13:46)
Bring back Sharpe...Bring back Sharpe...Bring back Sharpe!!!!!!! If only...
Hah also bring back Soldier Soldier for the handsome sergeant (not Robbo and Jerome) and bring back Ultimate Force (Jamie Draven) and tight shorts (enough reason needed!)
>>By Bethan (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 13:51)
Ouch! Hot botton, eh, Ortlieb... :o) Very understandable, I think, but I should ask: Since these programs are not shown here in the US, I don't really understand what all is involved. Your comment, "It's sad when ex Reg NCO's/troopers use their knowledge gained in Regiment for so obviously commercially driven interests" makes me wonder. Are the things they are including in these programs the same kinds of things that would be restricted/censored by the CA, MoD, or OSA if they were trying to publish them instead of including them in a reality-tv show?
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 14:50)
Hi aib!
I can only comment on the episode I mentioned above, but I suspect it's the same thing with the other episodes: Answer to your question: No. This is standard SOP-stuff that has been covered in all the SAS-books that has been mentioned in here - fictional and non-fictional.
But - my "fury" doesn't stem from misgivings of SAS-personell revealing "classified" SOP's (which they don't do anyway). It's more the fact that ex Reg NCO's and troopers choose to participate in reality-TV shows *at all*. (note: reality-shows). The "Hunting Chris Ryan" show pops into my mind also...
I don't judge people for finding military procedures/SOP's/contact drills/rapelling etc. etc. fascinating though. But most - if not all - of the SOP's that today are standard with various military field-intelligence patrolling units in the world originate from 22 SAS. Therefore - any other unit familiar with these SOP's could've acted as instructurs in such a show.
I feel that having ex Reg NCO's and troopers participate in reality TV-shows drags the Regiment's "professional" reputation further down into the mud.
But - and I don't mean to sound patronizing here - I suppose it's perhaps easier for a person with military background to see my point than a civilian.... ?
Btw: there was a typo in my original statement: it's meant to be "but they're at least *NOT* so "high-end..."
>>By ortlieb (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 17:34)
Excellent explanation, Ortlieb! Thank you, and I concur completely in all my civvieness! {Whispered: Worst part about civvieness is that it makes me that much greener... with envy...} vbg! vbw!
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 15 Oct 2003 18:02)
I find all "reality shows" disgusting, and people who participate in them incredibly stupid moneygrabbers. So, if you didn't know my opinion on CR before you do now. And I agree that ex-SAS people who do things like that drag the name of the regiment through the mud, I mean, making them look violent is one thing, but making them look stupid... But well, they didn't all join for the same reason I suppose. Not everyone was as motivated as Andy. Some people just didn't have anything better to do.

I just recently discovered Andy Mcnab's work and just finished Firewall which absolutley is his best! Can't wait to start his next....BTW,I'm new to this board so I'll be catching up on all the posts.Does anybody know if McNab will tour for his next book?
>>By dirkpitt1972 (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 05:25)
Welcome, Dirkpitt1972... (nice name! does Clive know you're here? vbg! vbw!)
Oooh, don't we wish AM would tour for his books! It seems that he has made a rare few book-signing appearances (i.e., last year in Chicago) but it is very difficult (spelled impossible) to get any information of that sort in advance from Transworld. Grrrr!
May I ask which of AM's books have you read so far besides Firewall? And are you reading in publication order?
>>By am-i-binned (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 05:52)
Hello dirkpitt1972! Welcome to the Board! The place to be if you want to chat about Andy and all things SAS! :)
I'm really looking forward to his new book too, but I have no idea if he's ever toured for a book release. I heard he's done surprise drop-by book signing in UK but these other nice posters here may know more about that.
AIB will probably ask too, but what brought you to the board? Which of AM's books have you read? Catching up on all of the past posts will take a bit, so stock up on your favorite beverage and munchies and go to! Glad to have you here. :)
>>By Dare (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 06:00)
Thanks for the warm welcome, guys! I frequent the Clive Cussler board at simonsays.com using the name 'bart1972'. Yeah,I'm reading all the Nick Stone's in order.I'm going to order Liberation Day tomorrow(just picked up Last Light).McNab's realism and narrative style has made me miss my train stop a few times already! Several months ago on the simonsays.com site I remember seeing McNab listed for an appearance in NYC.Did that happen? Recalling the film,Heat, which I've seen numerous times, you can just see Andy McNab written all over it.Makes me wonder if Michael Mann,Sizemore,De Niro,etc... have read his books since then. I feel like a kid on Christmas morning finding this board.
>>By dirkpitt1972 (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 08:00)
Merry XMas Dirkpitt.. Anyone (who ever gets here first) wants to explain about that name...what have Dirkpitt, Clive and Bart in common?
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 08:23)
Well done Lynn I didn't like to ask!
Ortlieb just to bring to your attention if you hated SAS Are You Tough Enough you will loathe the SAS Survival Show (also Eddie Stone) which has mysteriously disappeared from BBC 2. Damn it was getting to the 'how to escape terrorists' episode. I'll miss that moustache.....
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 09:11)
Hmm... well, to clarify once again: it's the "reality-TV" concept I loathe in general, but in particular when the SAS (of all people) involve themselves.
I have nothing against instructional videos/documentaries where the SAS (or other professional army-units) participate. I have several of these myself - "selection for the Australian SAS" being one of them (as I've mentioned earlier). Most of these instructional programmes used to air frequently on the Discovery channel, but nowadays they only do WW2-documentaries of the Liebstandarte Waffen SS, "Tanks!" or similar. Damn shame...
>>By ortlieb (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 11:02)
Ortlieb you forgot Blitzkreig the best of the lot!
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 11:48)
Hey guys!
I see the debate is still raging over who should play NS..... I still think VM is the go.
Ortlieb, I totally agree with you on the whole reality TV point. After providing my baby-sitting services on a few of these shows I'm convinced the people they use for them are carefully selected from "Wankers R Us". As for the SAS ones, the motive come down to easy $$ I'm sure.
Here's a few words from the Book of Paul: "When air-stewards tell you that alcohol can effect you a lot more in the air, they're not f#*king wrong!"
Excuse me while I sort out my confused body clock, hangover and lack of email address (not in any particular order).
take care, speak soon
>>By Paul R (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 21:14)
lo to all. My pc been down troops but im back up and running now. (everything crossed)! As to the discussion on who should play AM...... i think im definately in the Sean Bean camp. Providing he can loose the northern accent. I would say Colin Farrel but, sorry ladies, he reminds me too much of Kevin Webster off Corrie im afraid.
Lynn. Im not sure about the Bart thing but isnt Dirk Pitt a character in Clive Cussler books? Hmm. Maybe the man himself can clear that one up. Tata
>>By Minimi (Thursday, 16 Oct 2003 22:15)
Yes,Dirk Pitt is Clive Cussler's hero and until a couple months ago(when I came across AM/NS)the coolest badass in fiction.I'm starting Last Light sometime today and can't wait to get out of work so I can lose a few hours in it. Personally,I think James Purefoy would be a great NS. He's got the rugged yet handsome thing going and could easily convey the 'what the ____ have I gotten myself into'humor.Picture the guy in jeans,Timberlands, and bomber-style jacket. I can't believe I've been missing out on AM's work for the last few years. I bought B20 a few years back along with a stack of other books by various authors and promptly misplaced it until a couple months ago. Will Dark Winter be published in the U.S. around the same time as the UK? Also, does anyone have any info on AM's work as weapons/technical advisor on 'Heat'? Thanks!
>>By dirkpitt1972 (Friday, 17 Oct 2003 08:40)
Thanx for explaining Dirkpitt... Still know don't but at least know I know more about what I don't know..
James Purefoy.. mmmm... maybe I've seen the wrong movies but I miss the fire in his eyes.. That merciless-ness (?) that Sean Bean definitely has. And I've seen it in Colin Farrell and Viggo as well. Recently I've been told that even if I 'jolly around' there's still a lot to find behind my answers. So here's a very direct one.. Fire and merciless-ness definitely attractive in a guy!
>>By Lynn (Friday, 17 Oct 2003 13:05)
That first sentence didn't make sense but it's even worse than I thought. Comes from being in a hurry. One more shot: Thanx for explaining Dirkpitt... Still don't know, but now at least I know more about what I don't know.. :o)
>>By Lynn (Friday, 17 Oct 2003 13:08)
This has nothing to do with Andy but hey I've just scored 60/95, feeling very impressed with myself, give it a go if you have 5 minutes.

Maybe my teachers were right I'd always waste my time away....
Well done Minimi another vote for Mr Bean (but not the ugly one) and a big no from me for Colin Farrell he's hideous, ugh. I even think Kevin Webster is better looking (desparation!!).
>>By Bethan (Friday, 17 Oct 2003 14:00)
Naaah Colin Farrell, no way, his face is too childish Viggo Mortensen, yesssssssssssssss indeed, now that's my kind of man. James Purefoy, ok, could do. James Marsters oooooh nooooooo! Jamie Draven, now we're really desperate, no no! Sean Bean, hmmmm yes yes but after some dieting, he looked a bit plumpy last time I saw him. Eric Bana, yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssss! Caveziel, hmmmm could do but he's got these sad eyes and he's doing Jezus for the mo, well maybe. Hugh Jackman, oooh yessie yessie! Can't come up with anyone else for now, and have to fly away.
>>By borisette (Friday, 17 Oct 2003 14:21)

Minimi, are you trying to say there are women on this message board? No way! I thought it was full of battle hardened fighting men with years of military experience......although I was wondering about all the oooohs and aaahhhhs when SB and VM were mentioned. I was starting to think that this must be a Navy message board.
take care, speak soon

haha. Nice one Paul. Although i was just assuming. Hmmm. Maybe it is the Navy board.
