Thanks Lynn, that's very kind of you. :P
Will stay around like a stick bomb... er, ok, seen 4-5 times "Saving Private Ryan".

Talking about this film, the first time I've seen it was at the theatre when it came out, please don't ask me how many years ago. The film has done it's job for one simple reason: I was in total shock! I've stayed in for the first ten minutes having my eyes shut most of the time, and after that I had difficulties in breathing; in fact, I was quite undecided if to throw up or faint. Since 9 seconds later I was quite in the mood to do both at the same time (Murphy's law.), and still conscious enough to consider the chance of choking on my own yuckiness, I've pulled myself on my jellyfeet and dragged them with their owner in the darkness; was quite relieved to see other shadows lurking thru the fainted intermitted movie-lights. After a bit of self-hyperventilation in the corridor, I went to the rest room and saw my face in the mirror: it was NEVER, EVER WHITE before, and on my left zone of the neck, my heat pulses were visibly jumping in that spot of the vein like cangaroos, no kidding. My forehead was sweaty. As if I the previous two reactions' weren't enough!

And what about you? Whatever film that has given you emotions, of course -scratch out Johnny English. ^_^

When I was nine, my parents took me to see Mary, Queen of Scots. Ian Holme played Davie, her court musician who happened to be one of the only Catholics in her court and a good friend. There is a scene where he's murdered, in quite a brutal fashion, and it's supposed to be historically accurate. It's one of the most heart-rending death scenes I've ever seen on screen. That one and Roy Batty's scene at the end of BladeRunner, of course.

I think the movie/story that most devastated me, hours of tears and an ache in my heart still, even though it's been years since I saw it: Gallipoli...

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 09:20)

i'm not a book reader as such but started bravo two zero yesterday an finished it this mornin jesus could you even imagine being put through one 1\10th of that torture an coming through other side i'll never moan again when things go wrong n fair play to him having a go at some stuck up car salesman who'd have a week on sick if he so much as had a runny nose.
don't know ins n outs of the secrecy issue but all i can say is i didn't come away from that book thinking wot a bunch of unsociable morons i came away with the bravery of those lads against all odds when most people would take one look an say "yeah right ! you are joking"
From a non military person like myself i stand in awe at a very brave bunch of men whom i wouldn't want on my back yard looking for me !
ps Shawshank Redemption is a top film can't believe it went straight to video cause they thought it might flop on big screen

One of my favourite films of all time (and the one that makes me cry the most funnily enough) is How Green Was My Valley (also a book and its really really good). It's an old black and white and I can't help but cry everytime I see it. I won't spoil it in case anyone does fancy a bit of Welsh nostalgia.

>>By Bethan   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 10:24)

I never cry at movies
(ignoring mode)
Ok ok, the very first tears I shed was when Boomer (the dog) was kicked by an awfully mean bastard of a guy. That devastated me, how can you kick a dog? (not a joke!! I really cried)

Saving private ryan tends to do that Deu... luckily I was warned..
Wonder if we cry seeing Crisis Four… wonder if we ever see it at all…

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 12:26)

I cried at King Kong!

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 14:21)

yes..special effects were lousy

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 14:33)

is that what you were worried about? you spanner, how can I be offended at that? hahah

its true, but I was only 10 at the time. I'm a cold cow, I dont cry for anything - it comes with being in the SAS, you have to hide your emotions because they can be used against you. It can spill over into your home life though - hahah (utter nonsence)

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 17:41)

Ok, well...if you were only 10 it doesn't really count. So you're a tough cookie now.. well.. with us you can be yourself..don't be shy, just let it all out.. we won't use it against you.
We'll talk about you, but we won't use it against you.. :o)

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 17:50)

hahaha. yeah - I'm well 'ard.
hey what do you call an aardvard that's been beaten up? a vark

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 18:08)

Hey Pompy, your back, great...
A VArk??? ooh come on....

My first film that made me cry, let me think, I guess it was Dumbo, the scene where he gets seperated from his mum. But then I was a kiddie at that time.

My favourite film in all is "PLATOON" and it made me cry at the end.

Hey roomservice welcome to the board.
Is B20 the first AM book you've read? and how did you find us ? Glad your here.
Mansfield hey, is that the Mansfield from Jane Austin's book?

>>By borisette   (Friday, 24 Oct 2003 18:51)

We sure react differently don't we? ;)

Well, remaining in the cinema world for a while, since many here have tried guessing who could be Nick Stone in an eventual film, has anyone thought of the others, like Kev, or Pat, or Lynn (uhm... the mediator between the MOD and the Secret Service, not you Lynn. *smiles*), or even Valentin Lebed -the cechenian mafia's leader- or even Kelly. For Kelly I've imagined the little girl seen in "Heat", when the actor Tom Sizemore grabbed her after flipping in the fountain. But, after remembering that is has been filmed around nine years ago, I don't think that little girl can be considered as "little"!
As for Sara in "Crisis Four", I've thought of Joanna Going, I think she's absolutly fit for the part... But strangely enough I don't want her to be in that role because 1) she's the baddy, and 2) she'll be killed. *sniffles*
Any other suggestions?

To be frank, in a way I hope there'll be no film: in many cases they are different from the book, and mainly because I think it'll be difficult to find someone to fork out enough money to make it long AT LEAST three hours, like "Titanic". I hope though that it'll be made differently. How? Well, with someone reading what's written in the book when no one's talking in the film, pretending to be Nick Stone thinking; this outer voice, in my opinion, would be great to explain many of Nick's ideas and so on... it'll be like reading again the book. *bigger smile*

Oh yeah, don't forget all his flashbacks, they are absolutely a must!

Can I direct the film, pleeeeeeeease? *fiftyfive teeth smile*

Shall we make it to page 100 before Halloween!?
Tomorrow is the Big Wrestling night. Looking forward to that.

Why couldnt I be Lynn ????? I've got a good voice, I could be like that guy in Charlie's Angels.. what's his name?? Oooh, Charlie..duh!!

>>By Lynn   (Saturday, 25 Oct 2003 00:17)

Hmmm... but isn't he bald? (scratching the top of my head!)

Hey Lynn, sure you still want to be Lynn?!

... D'oh!!

>>By Deusrexmachina   (Saturday, 25 Oct 2003 01:38)

I've another question, and sorry if someone has already asked this before in one of these 92 pages -told ya I didn't read 'em all: how did you "meet" Mr Andy's books? (if I'm repeating this question, mind telling me in which page are the previous answers?)

I've read Immediate Action for first, actually a bit by chance: a year ago or more I've bought Green Berets written by Tom Clancy, but I was deeeeeeeply bored; reading a toe-nail clipper's encyclopedia for dummies would have been much more cheerfull! Some time later, at the same book sector, I've glanced IA but was aware of the previous experience; still, the price was very low, so I've convinced myself to give it a chance and brought it back home. The first chapters were... well, so-so, I didn't feel any vibe. Was pretty upset actually, but I've just pushed myself to continue. Miracle: it became interesting after howling for close-to desperation (wonder if it was full moon that evening!); was reading like crazy, running with my fantasies as if I was there, and found myself crying at the end of the last page. I've NEVER, EVER been so fullfilled of emotions by reading a book, but in this particular case it's because he has written what I've wished to do: I couldn't be part of the military service due to my flatfeet (exactly like Donald Duck's feet, quack!), and in my childhood I've drooled to enrole in the special corpse. This doesn't mean I would have passed the selection, but still...

Heh, "Last Light": I've bought it in a big music-DVD-book store more than a month ago when I, my Sister & Mom went for a one-day-trip to Rome, and it's His only book I have in English, *sigh*; the others are of course in Italian. Once at home I've discovered that the title has not been translated as it should: the italian one is "Bersaglio mobile" (that is "Mobile target"), and it's EXACTLY "Last Light"! :(( So I've two books, both equal (except it's size & cover), in two different languages... and both without his autograph, darn! Lesson acquired, n° 2438: make a mental list of all your favourite artist's books, and have them translated in several languages, including parsee... to be on the safe side.

The second book was Bravo Two Zero; when I've discovered that Remote Control is a novel, I was a bit reluctant in ordering it because it's not a biography. But after a few chaptors I've been bugging the bookstore clerk untill he didn't find me the other three.
... wonder why he has changed job!...

I'm curious: wonder which Leatherman does/did Mr Andy use?...

>>By Deusrexmachina   (Sunday, 26 Oct 2003 00:04)

hello...

as some of you might know, i'm a lieutenant in the finnish reserve... if/when an enemy (russia(sorry russians, but that's what were (mostly) training for)) attacks, i'm on the frontline, doing observations. I'm one of the guys gathering the intelligence, making the plan for a possible assault, and then actually doing it... so if any enemy installation needs to get blown up, we drop in by helo, get in by boat, or dive, then kill the adversary force, get the job done etc... so we're the elite of the finnish army (we even got stationed to the US embassy on sept. 11, '01)

some others might know me as another drunken bas**rd that keeps popping up here...

whatever you think, here's my story:

the first snow fell yesterday in helsinki... the weather this morning was one of the worst you could imagine...
temperature at -2, wind blowing at 15 m/s and a sort of snow/water mixture (sleet) falling horizontally coming in...

our sailing competition went quite well, and we got home, happy enough knowing that we had jaegermeister in our stashes to keep the cold out...

Later, we decided to go out and check the nightlife, and we just happened to pass via the hotel that AM was in in FW...

i took some pictures with my camera, and the quality of them isn't what you'd like.... well anyways, i'll put the link below... (once again... the quality is quite bad... if you want better pictures, holler and i'll go take some)

http://kylie.zapto.org/~walla/entrance.jpg
(the entrance to the hotel)

http://kylie.zapto.org/~walla/lane.jpg
(the place where NS's cars would have been positioned)

http://kylie.zapto.org/~walla/seats.jpg
(where NS would have been sitting to observe the lobby)

Now dear trident explain me how you do that wave
sign on your deskboard...
Anyway nice work, sure if AM reads this he'll check it out aswell.

OOh deary me, I'm half deaf. Just come back from that WWChampionship of wrestling. It was fun.
Well I enjoyed it but my hubby didn't all that much.
We were sitting just at the entrance where the fighters come out so we had a great view. They sure hit hard and especially fall hard aswell. Maybe they'd need some of my help as an osteopath, I could thrust their bones one by one but maybe Dare had better massage them first.

you mean '~' ?

alt-gr + the button next to enter that has a ^,¨and a ~ on it

if you have an american keyboard, try pressing the button on the left side of the '1' and experimenting with shifts, controls and alt buttons

also, you may copypaste the link... move your mouse over the link, and "ctrl-c" also works with ctrl-ins or rightclick and copy, and then "ctrl-v" or shift-ins or rightclick and paste... puuh

whine... this beer is too good for me, but like friar tuck said in robin hood
"This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which
the Lord has intended a more divine form of consumption.
Let us give praise to our maker and glory to His bounty
be learning about beer."

hmm, lemme try this btw.. prolly won't work but just one line, if it works, i'll paste them all as urls

<a href="http://kylie.zapto.org/~walla/seats.jpg> click here </a>

well, it didn't

>>By trident   (Sunday, 26 Oct 2003 02:54)

Hey Trident, that's a nice job you've done there. If you have other pics, please link them! Did you make any of the lifts, 'cause I can't see them. :P

Have you tried reaching for their RV, 10 kms north from Vaalimaa? Or... is it too far?
:(

I don't know if there's a typo in the italian version of "Firewall", but is there a 30 meter distance between the second sliding doors and the reception!? Judging from the picture, it seems much less! Or is it I who needs some eye-training?
