Hmmmmnope, neither this way worked. :(
To give a slight idea how one of the Finnish-Russian boarder looks like (white & freezing cold!), check this out! http://www.tieh.fi/alk/english/frames/kelikamerat-frame.html

i'd be happy to put pictures of different stuff up on the net if anyone cares... f.e. the train station, and the safe deposit box (does anyone remember the number(can't be bo**ocksed to remember it, too much more important stuff to keep track of)), and a recce of the hotel also.. the vaalimaa border is a good 3 and a half hours drive away, and authorities don't really like ppl hanging out so near the border with cameras and stuff. I'm not sure it's really AT the border, but still...
here's a view from my balcony taken right now, so you see how it looks like here... not really a sunshine state here atm

Oooh, Trident! Absolutely excellent! Well, okay, maybe a little blurry, but still a brilliant idea and a great recce!
And you too, Rex! Terrific idea -- thanks for the link to all the traffic/road cams!
Both of you -- F Troop -- without a doubt!
Welcome, Roomservice... No probs with anything I read in your first posting, in fact, I could relate completely -- that's the way I felt when I first read B20... and I still feel that way!
Uhm, Borisette? Would it help if we SPOKE A LITTLE LOUDER for you right now, post-wrestling? LOL!!!! :o)

Way to go, Trident -- eyes on target! Uh-oh, though, should I be worried about things I keep track of? :o\ "The long banks of left-luggage lockers by the taxi exit were on legs, with a four-inch gap between them and the floor. Pretending to clean the slush off my shoes, I taped Tom's under Number 10 and mine under Number 11."

Hi all.
Nope Trident, in fact, as specified in the previous page, their RV is 10 kms north of Vaalimaa, near the lake. Actually, Nick Stone ran ON the frozen lake itself. :) Oh, please do post all the links you wanna show us; if you mind, can you link your main page that gives all the pics to click on? It's like a menu with (mainly) no pictures or drawings, just a text page, and what can be clicked is in blue. By the way, I've tried nosing around your links: what does "karhuraukka" mean?!!? ;)
Thanks Am-I-Binned. :P I've clikced again on that link, and boy if it's already dark there!! Well, not that it's bright here, but in comparison...
Hey Roomservice, hi! What happened to your arm!? How did you hurt yourself, at work? And when will it get better? (:-( Try reading ALL Mr Andy's books, because even if the next five are novels, they are full of his experiences... and humour! :D
>>By Deusrexmachina (Sunday, 26 Oct 2003 17:02)
'karhuraukka' means 'poor bear' in finnish...

I like the pictures, definitely more of those please Trident! It's nice to see what it really looks like and not just what it looks like in my head, which was nothing like the pictures.

That's Norway for ya!
Trident: have you ever cross-trained with Norwegian military units?
>>By ortlieb (Monday, 27 Oct 2003 16:59)
my grampa was one of the founder members of the special force training school in Norway....or something like that apparently. after the Korean war.
>>By Pomplemous (Monday, 27 Oct 2003 18:10)
Well still can't get that snake sign on my puter so i can't check on the photo's of trident. Hey just zipped onto relaxwithabook and it's Liberation Day again, hoped it'd been AM with DW.

Hi all.
Wow Pomplemous, that's interesting! Did you inherit ony of his specialties & tactics? :D Still go around the streets with some weed on your hat? VBW! :))
>>By Deusrexmachina (Monday, 27 Oct 2003 22:13)
re:ortlieb no, we didn't get a chance to do any cross-training with units from other countries. anyways, since norway is a member of NATO, and finland isn't, it wouldn't be right, would it? yes i'm aware of these scandinavian joint trainings, but we didn't do any.
i'll put some pictures from our training on my site soonish (later tonight)...

>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003 09:33)
I can't get those links to work, is it just me? Lynn I bet he's relieved no more typing! Do you reckon he types himself or does he get someone else to transcribe his storytelling?
>>By Bethan (Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003 09:44)
Oooh, bummer! Trident, please help! (It's not just you, Bethan; I can't get to Trident's links either.)

>>By trident (Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003 11:50)
Hmmm... maybe too much traffic as we all crowded around, pushing and shoving, trying to see your pictures? Yeah, that's probably it. Sorry about crashing your server, Trident. ;o)
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003 12:10)
we lost our uplink due to "technical difficulties"... we still have no ETA on when it'll get back up, but stay hungry...
i'm not sure if it was traffic related, but it worked fine at about 5am, when i got it done, and also at 9 am EET when i woke up...
until then, keep your hat on...

Hi everyone,
Sorry I didn't post for so long. I've been so very very very very very very very etc. busy, I just couldn't be bothered. And, this is really sad, I've even been too busy to enjoy reading Andy's books. I decided to just wait until I'm not so stressed anymore, because it would be a real waste to read an Andy McNab and not fully enjoy it. But I see you've been having all kinds of interesting discussions (and some really funny ones too) so maybe I just should make some time. Anyway, I'd like to respond to some of the things said on the board.
First of all: Viggo and Sean, yummy yummy yummy! But I think Viggo is too sweet to play Nick. Sean is also sweet but also kind of arrogant. And he's got some things in common with Andy: he's Britsh and has had several wives. So: Sb for NS!
Secondly: Deusrexmachina asked if anyones attitudes changed after reading Andy's books. Well, mine did. I've always been a pacifist, and now I can't wait to get my own machine gun and slaughter some terrorists, or at least the dratted neighbors that always complain about my cat!
But, seriously: most of my life I didn't consider soldiers as people. For instance, when there was an attack on an American naval base (I think it was),I thought: well, fortunately there weren't any people killed, just some soldiers. Or, when the IRA killed British soldiers in Ireland, I used to think nothing really had happened, they were only soldiers. Ofcourse my attitude changed as I grew older, but I only understood that soldiers are real people after reading B20.
And also I couldn't think so black-and-white anymore. You know, bad English soldiers, poor opressed Irishmen. I already got less of a pacifist after several visits to Israel. I loved the country, I loved the people, and the people are scared shitless of terrorists. There is nothing innocent or noble about suicide commando's, and I pitied the poor soldiers who had to protect the people and were scared themselves. Also I was glad they were around. To protect us. And when we heard the news that a Palestinian busdriver had driven his bus into a crowd of soldiers at a busstop, I knew these soldiers were young boys and girls. I've seen them often enough, they don't have a lot of money that's why they take the bus, they can travel by bus for free.
After reading Andy's books also felt some admiration for their craft, although their craft is essentially, killing. I still feel dubious about that, for in principle I'm against it. But I can live with contradictions
Thirdly: I don't want to hurt people's feelings but I wouldn't recommend Chris Ryan's books. No matter what interesting subjects he writes about, he's just not a writer. It's just not well written. In other words, I found it so terribly boring I couldn't manage more than a page or two. But I know some people like him.
And, er... fourthly, oh, never mind... I'dl ike to respond to some of the things Nutter wrote. You wrote that someTV personality said that the B20 patrol was a complete failure (or something). Well, I would like to see that guy dumped in the desert of Iraq and see how far he gets. The B20 patrol tried everything and still it went wrong. These things happen. It doesn't make them look like tossers to me. They still came across as very professional.
What I find heroic about Andy, no matter if he did or did not fail the mission, is how he survived. To me he's a hero for being tortured and surviving it, he's a hero for being so brave. Many people can identify with the way he acted and thought during his ordeal. Again, I think it's an incredible account from a man who dares to share his feelings with us in a way I've never read before.
About the problems Andy's had: it only makes him more human. I don't think it comes as a surprise to anyone that Andy is not perfect. The things that happened don't seem very terrible to me. And they don't make a difference to his books. That Andy is insecure about some things (the class thing) is only understandable. What I find great is that he notices these things in himself. He shows his famous insight in being able to analyse what he's doing, and why. Also, the proof of his intellectual capacity is in his books, or more specifically (because they might have been written by a ghost-writer), in his account of the events.
Finally, I'd like to ask you something: what do you mean by "Is there a killer sleeping in his bed right now?" and, why exactly do you think Andy McNab is not happy (I didn't understand the Jeans store thing)?
Ok, that's it. I hope by writing a lot this time I made up a bit for not writing very often. Or maybe I only made it worse, I don't know :)
>>By Lethe (Tuesday, 28 Oct 2003 22:47)
Hi all!
Hey Lethe, what a great way to continue posting! Hope to hear more from you too! :)
Trident, just a question (perhaps two, I'll see later!). I've viewed some pics this morning and I was a little mixed up with emotions. I've felt quite flattered knowing to visually "share" your experiences, or better still, part of your military life, but on the other hand I had some doubts if it was ok for you to post these kind of pics on the web. I know very well the existence of other military pics in VARIOUS other sites, but for what I know most are unofficial and also mainly done from non professional people. Some are just scanned pages or simply grabbed from other links. But in your case, since you're STILL in a "particular" military group, isn't it dangerous for your and your group's safety to expose these type of feedbacks? I am in NO WAY an expert in the military field -like in many others, but this is another story- and seeing these pictures are like watching Mr Andy's in "Immediate Action". In the same time I presume that for an expert eye there could be some details that could eventually be noticed, and the conseguences could not be in your favour.
I don't want to offend you in anyways, I hope you don't think I'm underestimating your job since I'm sure you've had and are still taking great precautions before snapping the camera, but I'd like to just tell you what I know from my own personal experience -and also from some others: when I'm too happy, that's the moment I am vulnerable and let the guard down. I notice this at work and in other situations too.
What I'm trying to say is that I respect in my own way the military forces -special ones in an upper level- and wish the best for them. Just take my point of view and questions as they are, 'cause I'd like to remind us all that we are not the only one reading these pages. I'm not referring at all to Echelon or to Mr Andy, but to people who might use the right information for the wrong thing.
That's all!
... just to melt some ice, ever said I'm quite a paranoid person!?

Lethe:
CR vs AM is an individual matter of opinion obviously, but "The Watchman" by CR is high-quality. Anyone claiming otherwise will have to take stress-positions for at least 30 minutes. :)
That CR has turned into the most commercial of all ex Reg lads is another matter though....

Every time I come into this forum I worry about what to write because I love reading it and being a part of it, but I am getting more and more scared off at how serious and um...its got a grouchy tone to it you know.
Anyway - on a lighter note, I am now well established at work as the SAS girl - I've had my professional opinion invited on the topics of signing busiess letters, jumping the train (not paying) to Edinburgh, meeting your mates in the bar and how to fend off a grouchy dog.
Maybe The Sun will come as ask me how to pop off Diana - like they did ol Andy baby.
>>By Pomplemous (Wednesday, 29 Oct 2003 12:16)
Uhm... The Sun asked Andy to pop off Diana? Thought she'd been done in a while ago. Oh, unless (like our US tabloids) they think she's hiding out with Elvis. Hmmm.....
