"When you buy your poppy - if you don't know - ask that man what his medals are for."

What a beautiful line, Geist!
At first I thought it was poetry.
Maybe it is poetry?

Still haven't gotten my copy of DW yet. :( I'm going a little stir crazy here. Ah well... I got so desparate that I read a girly book. Girl with a Pearl Earring by Tracy Chevalier. It was very good, first person narrative, in an exotic location (Holland, ok maybe not exactly exotic but definitely different), but not one single gun battle, no nifty acronyms or military lingo to decipher.... and no Nick. *sigh* I tried to picture how Nick would handle the situation but mostly he would have smacked the bratty kid, the bratty maid and mom too and told the painter to get stuffed. He probably would have traded notes with the butcher on how to best cut up a side of beef ... and other assorted bodies, I mean carcasses. I can't see him getting all that misty over a pair of pearl earrings but if it was a really good weapon or case of PE, it would have gotten his attention.

Anyway, I really want my Nick, I mean book!

>>By Dare   (Friday, 7 Nov 2003 23:47)

Oh Dare, I can imagine how you feel.... I just got (a must read - it's work) a book called 11 o"Clock Chocolate Cake..
It's supposed to be a very funny (girlie) book, but I must devide my reading time between DW and girlie Chocolate..
But in this case, mingle the two, a bunch of 16 year old having a pyama party.... fooling around with liquid chocolate, I don't think Nick will do a lot of smacking :o)

Holland not an exotic place??? All you have to do is look for tulips... they might bring you in exotic clouds... or so I'm told .... ;o)

It is nice to hear - after all these years - exactly what soft rock was playing on the radio in Kev's house... but eeerr Arrowsmith ???

eeerr... uhm... product placement?

ok, one thing i've been wondering for quite some time...

this 'racing spoon' that AM talks about in B20...
i have a picture of _ONE_ version (nb. this is not the exact copy of the one we use)
of our so called LU-HA (lusikka-haarukka) translated as SP-FO (spoon-fork (how ingenious))

here... http://kylie.zapto.org/~walla/luha.jpg

it did appear to be ideal for tin cans of food that we were eating, you get a goood chunk of food
with every dig, and you can also stab people with it... how more versatile can you get?
even the swiss haven't come up with that yet... they seem more preoccupied with the need for
opening chardonnay bottles in combat (does anyone see the sarcasm here?)

>>By trident   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 04:43)

Is it maybe that Chardonnay can improve absolutely any meal? (vb sarcastic g!)
Went back to your pictures, Trident, to look at "Lunch+cs" but couldn't zoom in enough to see any SPFOs in action (bummer!). What is "cs" by the way?

(Cross-posting -- AM/CR boards)

For some of our newer members of F Troop...

A number of recent posts, both here and on CR's board, have been removed (poof'd), mine included. Aggressive, personally insulting posts are in direct violation of the Discussion Guidelines so they are deleted, along with any responses related to those posts. My responses were in violation so I was poof'd along with others. I do know that the best way to defeat trolls is to ignore them, but I am weak and I always fear that my silence will be misconstrued as saying "they're right, they win, I surrender to their superior wisdom" -- Good grief! Give me a good poof'ing any day before that!

Actually, though, I understand how damaging such confrontations can be. I try to think, "How would this sound to a new person coming here for the first time?" (Even Ortlieb had noted the negative turn in tone as forces gathered to defend.) Or what if AM knows about our board and reads it from time to time, do I really want him to see a-i-b always engaged in bitchy battle? No, not really, but it's still easier said than done to keep silent.

So I apologize if my posts cost any of you your posts, and I thank MG for helping to clean up the mess...

>>By am-i-binned   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 16:30)

Sheesh, AIB, why do you have to tell others we're only human? ;o)

>>By Lynn   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 17:17)

DRAT AND DOUBLE DRAT Tridy still can't get that flipping wave sign of yours, now why is it you make everything so complicated.....maybe it's just my prehistorical puter (if -bill gates saw my puter he'd die immediately)or it's just dafty me......
How is the DW book going in the UK, I mean the selling, if it's that good should be number one soon.

>>By borisette   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 19:01)

I'ts just as well I am only human, Lynn... cuz if I really did have superior god-like powers, I'd just smite them and be done with it! LOL!!!

>>By am-i-binned   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 19:49)

cn is a variant of teargas... note our instructor with the gasmask...

>>By trident   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 21:36)

cn and cs are both types of teargas... not entirely sure which one we got hit with...

>>By trident   (Sunday, 9 Nov 2003 21:37)

Now I'm totally bewildered, Trident! Teargas with lunch?!? :oP

>>By am-i-binned   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 02:50)

Hello all!

AIB- I take my hat off to your gracious attitude, maturity and consideration for others in thinking of new readers that may have been scared off by the recent unpleasantness.

I would like to add my apologies to any fellow posters I may have offended with my deleted post (though not to the intended recipient-- I'm not THAT mature). ;)

>>By Dare   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 05:39)

Dare,
" I would like to add my apologies to any fellow posters I may have offended with my deleted post "

A little word mixing would make another interesting sentence:

" Deleted posters would like to add apologies to have offended with any post"

But I'm afraid it's pure fiction :o)

Trident:

Re Chardonnay-bottles: Have you watched "Robin: Live" too? (stand-up show with Robin Williams at Broadway, New York).

Anonymous poem found in the belongings of a soldier killed in Northern Ireland (Stephen Cummins). These are the words which were sung at the Royal British Legion Festival of Rememberance as heard BBC TV Saturday evening last.
Lest We Forget

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am a diamond glint on snow.
I am the sun on ripened grain.
I am the soothing, gentle rain.
When you awake in morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

---------------

On many Internet sites the poem has been attributed to Mary Frye 1932, although earlier readings were attributed to a soldier in the trenches of the Somme WWI (Anon).

Before I go, (or get poof'd for unwelcome countenance) please try to cast aspersions aside in respect of maimed, (bomb disposal operative) mercilessly named and duly discredited on this board with God of Thunder attitude (as opposed to Godly altruism), which not only caused him to be poof'd but actually got him banned outright from gnod. Therefore, he is unable to return with suitably profuse apologies on bended knee, whip at his heels.

I must say that never happened to me when I put a nose or two (theoretically) out of joint. So please, find it in your souls to at least give a moment to ponder the 11 hour of 11th day of 11th month, 2003 and, its true meaning! Also. Thank you for reminding people to purchase a Poppy, but please don't ask (?) a poppy seller (usually volunteer civilian UK) what they did (achieved) in battle for your question could be misconstrued as needing justification for the purchase. Go out of your way, smile, and put at least a pound in the collection tin.

I would like to think Andy McNab, coming to this board on a regular basis, (a wily predator at that) is well past pitiful bickering in an adolescent manner, would laugh his socks off for differing reasons (not the least bit po-faced) and would only see the greater picture of his notoriety: good or bad. After all, bad publicity is often far more eye-catching and not all saints (iconic warriors) had a bloodletting free past: the tabloid media testament to 21st century mania for celebrity gossip. If he's suddenly gone all po-faced, god help his readers who live for his every humorous one-liners...

Let's be honest here - for a moment - publication of B20 placed AM smack in the media spotlight, smack in the glare of many gladiatorial-minded ex colleagues who disapproved: true motives, (jealousy or genuine disgust) irrelevent at this juncture, and of course, there were other colleagues who were all for "publication and be damned".

Unfortunate or fortunate, wholly dependent upon personal viewpoint, some SAS/SBS authors were damned, ridiculed, and blatantly surmised/accused as traitors in some quarters, including AM. That said (in general terminology) means I am not looking to any confrontation/s. But, and it's a big but, anyone who comes to this particular Gnod message board (newbie) is looking to voice/discuss/debate and some will irritate and exasperate on the subject of AM and his books, but (that useful utilility word again) as Lynn pointed out: "human nature" is such that squabbles are inevitable, more so when opinions differ and egos clash.

Having read through a sent copy of the outrageous (all round hilarious) postings that ensued a week or so ago, it looks to be a classic case of "six-of-one and half-dozen-of-the-other skirmish, though not any worse than previous skirmishes. To be quite frank, (infamous personage - as I was branded not so long ago: backstage) the present case of "banned outright" in terms of "justice" in the case of *nutter* should have fallen on "all heads" involved, if only for a month or two. As in, Unadulterated and Unbiased Justice!

To put it simply, just because I no longer come on the board as an active participant has no bearing on the feedback I am confronted with and that of requests for information (if possible to grant). Subsequent browsing of Gnod message boards that some feedback induces is often highly amusing, not only to me but active participants and one-time active participants who still keep in touch by e-mail correspondence, ie; present CR spoofs providing more than a few laughs backstage.

I was pleased to be informed, recently, that a link dispatched via third-person on the subject of the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars proved fruitful to a requestee. As you can see from my profile I no longer flork, but e-mail address for contact is in situe.

DW arrived this morning, and my admiration for AM has not in the least waned despite external and internal inflections of attrition that have come my way from interaction at Gnod and by that of ungodly (perhaps war godly) backroom chat. It's inevitable when message boards are there for all to see and for all to join. After all said and done, if a newbie is reading this, believe me, F Troop has more good points than bad and you will surely acquire like-minded friends one way or the other, on the board, and of course off it: no matter what your take on SAS authors might be. Friendship is all about give and take "minus" "insidious" gossip and, the having of an open mind to the glorious "plus" of conversation without censorship. If you have that you have cyber Utopia....

best

Ortlieb, chuck the Chardonnay and pick up a Chablis...

>>By buddy   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 13:29)

haha ortlieb, was it that obvious?

teargas+lunch was just to get the point through that the enemy could attack at ANY time, and they really preferred coming at lunch or just when we had a break... typical...

>>By trident   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 14:04)

Buddy, “ get poof'd for unwelcome countenance”
I don’t believe ‘unwelcome countenance’ was ever a reason for poofing. It has always been the way ‘unwelcome countenance’ was expressed.
Anyone who wants to come out with a different opinion will not be ‘battered’ as long as it has no intent of personal insult. Experiences in this last year however showed that is only too easy to call me (or others) girlie stupid, blind admirer with nothing else to do than join a board of a traitor with no friends, girl go get a life etcetera. But any response to that from my (our) side is not appreciated and leads to loss of control. I am not gonna ask ‘ why’ cause I don’t want to start an argument about this. I’m merely stating that it’s a two way (human) street. If I lose control, I get poofed. Nutter lost control, Nutter got poofed. Simple. Speaking for myself… said this before..I am not easily insulted and usually try to ‘solve’ it with a joke. And if you say “ Nutter is unable to return with suitably profuse apologies on bended knee, whip at his heels” means that he would want to apologise, I’d say no need, no hard feelings, sorry it turned out this way. And you may pass that on if you’re willing. You know I don’t walk away from some fireworks.. it’s just that when fireworks start a real fire it’s gonna get extinguished. As for F Troop having more good that bad points.. I’d like to think so. Happy DW reading! :o)

buddy:
Not a huge champagne-fan really. Whip up a glass of Glenfiddich, then I'm game!

General question:
As I've seen URL-references for various SAS-related newspaper-articles fly across the board recently, I wonder if anyone has got articles/interviews of Michael Asher commenting on the negative response he got with TRB20. CR practically chopped his head off in a before-mentioned audio-interview, and AM gave the "standard" story in a video-interview I've got on VHS-tape (being compromised by a heardboy, getting in contact with a number of APV's etc. etc).
It would be interesting to learn if Asher has any "counter-measures" in that respect...

>>By ortlieb   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 16:27)

Just got DW this morning and am already 50 pages in! He always gets me hooked within the first couple of pages.
I was wondering if any of you go the chance to meet him… what would you ask him?

>>By Tom Pun   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 18:38)

Welcome, Tom Pun...

Uhm... "Mr. McNab, when are you going to post with us on Gnooks?" :o)

Of course, that's assuming I'd even be semi-coherent, seeing as I'd be concussed from keeling over and hitting my head on the floor...

>>By am-i-binned   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 19:51)

I would ask if he's read the excellent review of DW mr Tom Pun wrote in his 'new book magazine' ;o)
But serious.. good question and welcome Tom Pun
As always... please.. which book read, what's your favourite.. etc.

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 20:03)

My questions would be...

"How do you ex-SF guys cope with wearing a black box on your head all the time?"

and...of course...coz you wouldn't expect anything less from a bikergirl...

"Could you do better than a 1:42 on a stock 600 on road tyres round Donington Park?"

>>By bikergirl   (Monday, 10 Nov 2003 23:22)

I'VE GOT IT, IT'S HERE IN MY HANDS!! Sorry got a little carried away my DW is here with me (no thanks to blinking post office, even the Yanks had theirs first ha ha). God bless rugby training tonight, me, Nick Stone, bottle of wine and peace and quiet.

My question would be....
"What is a stock 600 on road tyres"

or being sensible "do people fall asleep in your security lectures?"

>>By Bethan   (Tuesday, 11 Nov 2003 10:03)

Is that in the wet or dry bikergirl? Just incase he asks!
Hi thanks for making me welcome it's a pleasure, and as you probably guess I'm meeting the man himself this Wednesday.
Rather than cover the same old Regiment ground etc I thought it would be great to throw in a couple of fan base questions. Keep 'em coming, bikergirls winning at the moment!

>>By Tom Pun   (Tuesday, 11 Nov 2003 10:06)

>Is that in the wet or dry bikergirl?

dry...very dry

>>By bikergirl   (Tuesday, 11 Nov 2003 10:10)

Well... that is certainly making us green Tom Pun.. :o)
Not gonna make this a compition though... F Troop is F Troop - if ' one' of us will make it to the questions we're all happy.
I'd say.... share share share about Wednesday... but I've learned enough this past year to know that is a non-question. So instead, may I be very happy for you !!
(who knew I could be this 'brave', least of all me hehe)
