On my best behaviour avoiding DW. Will come back later on and see how it's going down with you all.
>>By Saxon (Wednesday, 12 Nov 2003 21:07)
Well what do you know Saxon.. on your best behaviour you brought us page 99 !!
I was gonna say something about spoiler warnings or just spoiler but I swallowed it. I'm very good at that.
>>By Lynn (Wednesday, 12 Nov 2003 21:20)
Oopsy, last thing sounded far better in Dutch. It's the translating guys.. it's so hard...
>>By Lynn (Wednesday, 12 Nov 2003 21:21)
It's no good...spoiler warnings...they won't work. I put my fingers in my ears and shout "la la la la la"...but still the temptation is there...to read... I need to know...
I'm gonna have to risk gettin' banned from another bookshop whilst I speed read DW from cover to cover while only purchasing a single latte... (only coz they don't do SlimFast...)(or Glenfiddich...)
Or...you people who have finished yours... Well, you know where to find me... (Actually I'm in Brum tomorrow)
>>By bikergirl (Wednesday, 12 Nov 2003 21:53)
fingers in eyes Bikergirl... shouting will follow but the reading is excluded

I have read a couple of Chris Ryan's books - The One That Got Away and The Watchman. They're good, I suppose, but they pale compared to Andy's work. It's hard to put a finger on the difference. I guess it comes down to Andy's "real world" tone, which I mentioned earlier.
So, who are the other Yanks in the bunch? AIB, obviously. Any others? I kind of like the fact that AM is not so widely-read in the US. It's sort of like being in the secret handshake club. I'm sure Andy (and his financial people) would emphatically DISAGREE with that sentiment.
So, what is everyone's top Nick Stone moment? Mine? There's two and they're both from Remote Control - the entire bit in the office building (the break-in to the fight) and Nick's rescue of Kelly on the side of the road. Both scenes knocked me out of my chair.

Don't think this really needs a * spoiler warning * since it's just about a name: King's Lynn.......very honoured...... VBG! Noticed they call their football players 'the Linnets' How wonderful :o)
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 09:39)
Posting this on the run. Sooooooo busy.
AS AM sort of wrote about the darker side of King's Lynn, and didn't mention it brighter aspects, it might interest those of you who are not in the UK or have never descended on the place, to take a full tour: http://www.interads.co.uk/~jbh/
Saxon! Doh... Futures Publishing, remember, your "Digit" and "3D World" mags, Bath UK. Course I could be barking up wrong tree Tom Pun tree!
>>By buddy (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 10:44)
Norfolk UK, hee hee, is where my first husband proposed marriage, and not far outside King's Lynn where the family estate was centred. So, DW in that respect turned up a few old mmories...
>>By buddy (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 10:48)
Well I've finished it and I'm disappointed. It wasn't the book I was expecting. Stop looking backwards Mr Andy. I hope the next picks up. No spoilers there and probably no agreements with me either.

TP reporting in… Well what a top bloke, honestly couldn't do enough for us. Had a great afternoon doing a photoshoot in the basement of a dodgy carpark. Andy was up for everything and got some excellent shots. Our editor had a great interview with him and at the end we fired your questions at him. And fair do's he answered them all! It's going to take us a week or so to transcribe the tape so I'll post the answers then but off the top of my head I think he's up for an online chat (someone best contact Transworld to set it up) and I think he was going to sign more books, although he said he'd signed 5000 already??? Anyway thanks again and by the way the magazine is called 'ink' and issue one is in the shops from today!!! Andy should appear in issue 2, comes out round about 11 December! Nice one
>>By Tom Pun (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 10:58)
LINK MAG - better still... Bath/Somerset, is my old hunting territory...
>>By buddy (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 11:18)
Oh great Tom! Even with pictures?! Since you're the art guy you could do something nice decorating the black beams !! Contact Transworld... ouch.. that won't be easy. Thanx for getting back to us with the good news Tom.. looking forward to seeing it all. And for 'us' not-from-uk we can work something out right ;o) ?!
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 11:30)
Hi, managed to have a bit more time today... but looks like I'm already too late. Damnit!! :( So there's no more chance in asking Mr Andy any other questions?
*sigh*, now I'm kinda depressed...
>>By Deusrexmachina (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 12:58)
Sorry Too late it all happened yesterday! I'll let you know when the interview goes up on the Web site!
>>By Tom Pun (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 13:50)
Doh, buddy.
The man said INK. I think the Uni has a mag called Ink.
>>By Saxon (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 13:51)
TP
You asked all our questions or did you ignore the stupid ones?
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 13:52)
Doh what I was going to say until the damn computer had a fit was if you didn't ask the stupid questions I can if we get him online. Poor dab won't know what has hit him.
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 14:08)
One more and then going, does anyone else's Flork name list turn purple when their mouse is over it? Something is possessing this machine and I swear it has nothing to do with me.
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 14:12)
Actually I kept all the stupid ones in and just didn't include the usual serious sas stuff. I'll keep you posted when we get the transcrition and I'll posit it here!
>>By Tom Pun (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 14:18)
Hey, Tom...
Pssst, yeah, over here... shhhh.... hey, any chance we could get a listen to or copies of that tape itself?!? We won't tell if you won't.... :o)
Thanks very much for including our questions, especially the "unique" ones (see, it's just a matter of spin, Bethan). Plus, if AM got a kick out of them, he knows where to come for more of the same! LOL! Please do advise how we non-UKers can get the AM interview edition (online is nice but printed paper has its own special appeal).
As to an online chat, that would indeed be excellent. But as to contacting Transworld to set it up -- well, in our dreams. To be quite honest, Transworld has completely underwhelmed most of us with their poor customer relations skills where AM is concerned. Basically, inquiries go unanswered. So if you have any suggestions on how to go about contacting someone who’d actually help – oooh, yes, please! (huh? me, a bit bitter? well, yeah, you could say that...)
So, Tom Pun, now that you've just won the Super Bowl (of interviews), what are you going to do next? (don't say Disneyworld -- everybody always says that) Hey, how 'bout you continue hanging out here with us? :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 14:55)
I can never resist a good challenge, bet you thought I wouldn't do it, you know who you are. Don't work too hard I have the afternoon off!
Who Dares Tracers
Mid Wales, November 2003, the peak of Pen-y-Fan (please don't say pen-ny- fan that is wrong, it is pen-uh-van). I'm here to meet Andy McNab himself, millionaire author and resident hardcase (read that as I wouldn't mess with him). I got to go being the most stunning of course!!!! (Nothing to do with the fact that I wrote it, the going and the stunning!)
B "So Andy tell me about your latest venture" AM "Well Beth, baby, it's the new slim and fast traser watch". Holds out his left wrist and moves it about so the light reflects into my eyes. B "Very nice, now stop that" AM "Sorry. I designed it with Chris Ryan, you know, the one that got away when I didn't…" (I shake my head not wanting to comment") "It's just like your normal traser, the same top quality production, with the same unique light display." B "But doesn't that light compromise your position?" AM "Oh no Beth, you see it's low level light, perfect for covert work, but you could always cover it with your hand just in case or masking tape" B "So what is so special about this watch and what does it have to do with Chris Ryan?" AM (laughs cleverly) "When I press this button (points with a blade of grass to avoid confusion) this small outlet here, see you can hardly see it, shoots out a shot of slim fast. Enough to give you that extra edge when you're flagging" B "Flapping?" AM "Hey, now, I said flagging. I don't flap. SAS men never flap" B "Okay, yeah sorry. Understood, loud and clear." AM "What is important is this, he makes money by plugging slim fast and I make money by plugging traser. Win, win hey?" B "Yes, uhm I think we'll leave it there. How do we get down?" AM "Follow me" The bugger runs off at an impossible to follow pace, leaving me for dust. Damn, now I'm stuck. Next time we'll do the interview somewhere sensible like a pub, with a gin and tonic.
>>By Bethan (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 15:12)
Odds on: 100 by last light!
>>By am-i-binned (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 15:33)
Nice work, Tom. I will stay tuned for additional insight on your time w/ AM, as well as answers to questions that might not make it into print. I second AIB's question regarding how to obtain a copy of the actual issue here in the colonies.
An online chat w/ Andy would be most excellent indeed. Tom, can you pass on a message to Andy or his people that the Transworld approach is probably a non-starter, at least from our side of the fence? I have no idea how these things work, but it seems like a request from Andy's agent/manager/publicist/etc would go a lot further than a request from a bunch such as us.
A question for the group regarding signed copies of Dark Winter - I know that I have read in the past that AM does not do book signings (afraid some evildoer from his past will put in an univited appearance and all that sort of thing). So, where are all these signed books coming from? Is he actually doing public signings now? Is he doing this through the mail? Any info will be appreciated!
>>By Astroboy (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 15:35)
Well AIB... will you do the honour then please.. before last light is pretty soon over here..... Wow.. it feels a bit like New Year..... ;o) Signing books...at publisher's office... who distribute..???
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 15:44)
Hi, Astroboy...
Guess the best way to answer your question about signed copies of AM's books is to say: it depends. According to Transworld, AM does not do any public signings. This is not an absolute, however, because we happen to know of one signing in a Border's bookstore in Chicago last year. When I contacted Transworld and they finally answered me about it, they assured me that the signing had been strictly private, by invitation-only, full security, etc. But, lo and behold, we later found a radio interview with AM, broadcast just prior to that signing, and AM actually invited the entire listening audience to come to the bookstore for the signing of Liberation Day. (Oh yeah, real private! Thanks, Transworld!) And there have been other non-private signings in both the US and the UK, at military bases, schools, business conferences, and selected bookstores, but we always seem to find out after the fact and the specifics/details of these signings are hard (spelled "impossible") to come by.
That said, this year it seems AM signed copies of DW at his publishers and those books were then distributed to the shops which usually offer his signed books for sale.
>>By am-i-binned (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 20:01)
Re signed books:
Premium price, huh? Would that have been for selected stores - specially "invited celeb persons" to pre-sale (publication date) champagne do?
Will post Happy 100th Anniversary, as it can't be many more posts to the big one.
I won't be around to see it, but who knows, maybe the MAN himself will drop his mask and say Hi...
Nice one Beth...I've been waiting to hear the roar of 700cc zooming up the slopes to cut off AM's retreat...
>>By buddy (Thursday, 13 Nov 2003 20:23)
Bethan, that was a hoot! LOL
I still haven't gotten my copy of DW yet. Should be soon though. *tries to spackle dent in wall from beating head against :P )
Nice to meet the new people! *waves* Hey! A fellow Texan! Small world Astro, I live in Denton!
So the concensus so far, from those who have read DW, is that 1) the ending is a surprise and 2) it's upsetting. Is that about it? Ah well... I'm sure it will be worth the wait. :)
