Ok then i dont actually know who that is can't remember him.

Andy McNab! I ask you! I havent posted here before and if you are very good I wont again! haha, but I have all his books now - except Liberation Day. Do you think the old bean actually reads this? I read Chickenhawk last week (a vietnam war book) and sent a note in his guestbook and blow me, the author only came and wrote back! (mind you, I did mention what a good looker he was)
Anyway - Andy McNab - you have created in this scatty 26 year old girl, a would be SAS commado! haha - often in the evening I will perform CTR on the target (namely the bottle of wine on the kitchen table), I will hang back and stay within my LUP until the enemy has passed (in the form of disapproving mother) then at the chosen moment, I will bomb blast my way in, overcoming scatty dog obstacles, retrieve the wine and leg it back up to my room. See what monster you have created!? Giggle

As for matching people up in his stories - I did always think about that, I thought of Slack Pat already. and also the greasy child liker in Remote Control - Al someone - I had found connections for him too. But you know in Immediate Action - the guy who dies Al Slater - it was weird to hear from another SAS writer - harry McCullion (I think) about that story as he had written about it in his autobiography about hearing that and it mentioned some of the names of the poeple that were there - now given that ol' Andy baby was there - and Andy is a pseudonym - I am wondering if Harry's told us his name.....

But Andy, mate, for all your anonyminity, I would recognise your voice and profile 10 yards off. I wont say a mile off cos that would be just wrong, but definitely at close range. hahaha

sigh - never claimed to be clever.

Another interesting fact you may or may not be aware of (I bet AIB already knows this VBW.VBG)

As well as the squash court incident in RC, AM actually visited the President's bowling alley underneath the Whitehouse (CF) and was shocked at the size of Bill Clintons personal bowling shoes...

Apologies to anyone who hasn't read CF - you won't have a clue what I'm going on about!

>>By Sheba   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 18:55)

...oh, and Josh is based on a real person serving in the Secret Service too apparently...

>>By Sheba   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 18:56)

cool i didnt know that thanx sheba.

>>By christina   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 19:31)

forgot to say dont know wether you know this but somebody told me today that CF is being developed into a film by miramax and is the first in a planned series. He is also making a couple of films for BBC dont know wether this info is true or not?

Thanks Buddy, interesting article written in the herald.
As for those who don't believe I live in Italy, I DO LIVE THERE! How can i proof that. By speaking italian, ooh come on that's too easy, everybody speaks it nowadays. E va bene; che ti devo dire abito qui in toscana tra pisa e firenze in piena campagna: translate it yourselves:
AND SHHHHHHSH AM is among us ...

>>By boris   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 21:51)

Welcome, Caroline...

You really have me grinning at the imagery of your recce and rescue snatch of the target!

Remote Control: So who are you thinking Slack Pat is? I have a combination of people but haven't completely narrowed it to one.

As to Crisis Four: By Al -- you mean Big Al DeNiro (Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro) -- the combined names of the actors AM was working with for the movie Heat while he was also writing Remote Control. Some of AM's connections are very blatant, even down to the movie playing as NS enters the house to extract Sarah. And, yes, Sheba, you're right about the White House tour (supposedly the inspiration for the plot line), the bowling alley, the shoes, the tour, and Josh, too. And Little Lick Creek, all the roads, directions, and even stores where NS shops -- all real, too.

Same is true in Remote Control, too. Cannot speak first hand for Firewall, Last Light, and Liberation Day, but I would think it safe to assume similar accuracies have been included in those stories.

One of my earliest postings here was about interesting "non-fiction" links I'd found -- Operation Flavius, Sunburn Missiles, Moonlight Maze, Echelon, and maybe the most fun one--the live cam on the Panama Canal with a 10-second refresh rate! (I'll look for the links in my files--if still they're still valid, I'll post them.)

Thanks for the link, Buddy -- very interesting article indeed....

Christina, geez, there's nowhere specific I can point you to read -- you'll find loads of mentions about Miramax, CF, etc. all throughout the pages here. Don't really know about the BBC films...although I'm thinking maybe it might include the recent History Channel program "Bravo Two Zero: Behind Iraqi Lines"...

I believe you're in Italy, Boris! I do! I do! [whispered with urgency] Shhhh....Where, Boris?!?...where is he?!?

>>By am-i-binned   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 22:33)

I think a good read has to blur the line between reality and fiction. Unless the setting is somewhere no one has ever been ie: planet Zoz-Goz, then a writer has to presume that someone somewhere will know the place intimately and pull the story to bits. AM blurs this line brilliantly and you KNOW that he KNOWS the area well.

In my opinion, all good writers should follow this example. I'm sure if you followed the route described by DF in Fair Target between the old farmhouse and the airport, or Bloomingdales and Nancy's house, you'll find they too are as accurate as any map you can buy...

PS Apologies to those of you that have visited Zoz-Goz - the McDonalds is on Szsdrt Road and not Gyyzxr Street as mentioned in my upcoming book...   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 22:54)

Found this one for now (and it's one of my favourite finds):

Oooooh! May not be an AM spotting, but for sure seems like a DF glimpse!!!

I read recently that ?Rage? has put its games in production, including Team: SAS, up for sale. Anybody else heard anything about that?

Also, with all this talk about DW and Italy, am I to presume that most of DW will actually be related to the US and its interests again? I’m asking this because I’m watching a programme tonight on the world’s only perceived hyper-power (I tend to place AM’s books within the current global situation). Another thing I’ve also wondered is why the switch away from England, although I’ve supposed that this was because books set in and around the US are easier to sell as potential films. However, there’s some very interesting things happening, particularly in Britain, and Europe at the moment so I hope that somewhere European like Italy is in the frame this time around again.

buddy

No politics or religion, that’s my rule, just history and even then I’m wary. A long time ago, I made the mistake of making a throw-away comment about something entirely inane to do with the withdrawal of troops and the potential for a massive rise in car tax revenue from the no-go areas to someone from Belfast who didn’t understand my humour. Lucky I was sitting down.

>>By Mhorag   (Tuesday, 17 Jun 2003 23:32)

Boris: my Italian is absolutely s**t and I know auto translators would f**k up too, but here goes:

Aging well; that I must say and address in Tuscany between Pisa and Florence in full countryside

Mhorag: good job you *were* sitting down. Rage: who bought it is the question, if anyone...

Also, anyone know why Andy McNab pages have gone from Traser watches at AndyMcnab.com. Are they no longer paying him to advertise their wares, or what? Someone pointed it out to me the other day...

A writer who actually goes to places they write about, a reader can smell it, hear it, feel the wind/rain/sun on their backs....If a writer researches through holiday guides their descriptions lack those vital ingredients: scents/sound/etc...

>>By buddy   (Wednesday, 18 Jun 2003 01:29)

Mhorag, it's probable that DW may be somewhat related to the US because the actual "Dark Winter exercise" which seems to have been the starting point for AM's plot (ref pg 17, 1st post) was a US National Security Council exercise. However, according to AM's comments during the World Book Day online chat in March, AM's DW will be more international. Per AM: "It's about a planned attack in London, New York and Berlin, all at the same time with a biological agent... Nick stumbles into the plot...and start to discover what is going on."

Regarding Rage, Swedish reader raised the question about AM's computer game "Team: SAS" quite a while ago (pg 5), and the following, dated 15/1/03, was found:

"According to BBC News, Rage Software has reportedly closed its doors with an additional round of employees let go. While the company had a number of games in development, such as Lamborghini, Andy McNab Team SAS, and a new game based on the Rocky franchise, these properties will be sold off to other companies, and the remaining team members will be broken up."

I don't know of any further developments though, but possibly others here may. All I know is that I keep bumping into gamers talking about Team: SAS when I do certain searches....

Buddy, this link seems to have Traser and AM still happily merchandising together: http://www.traser.com/new/andy.htm
-- plus it's a default box when you Google "andy mcnab". Could your someone have maybe meant the monthly Competition was discontinued? (The last contest was back in February.) By the way, I tried the February competition just now for fun but could only find four differences. Maybe I'm overlooking something -- anybody else up for an outdated little challenge?

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 18 Jun 2003 06:44)

Am-I-Binned: blip on the system, no doubt. Sites do go down from time to time.

According to a News Release last night (MI5 statement) AM's Dark Winter might happen in reality, sooner than imagined...Omen, or what? Nah, fact of present day life of living an era of mad presidents and insane terrorist factions, western technology and warriors still living in the middle ages. The days of the Cold War were far less threatening...

A few posts back (Mhorag, I believe) suggested who ever is cast as Nick Stone for the Crisis Four movie, that person has to reflect the kind of lifestyle he's led or the man won't be very convincing...One assumes, Mhorag, you meant physical wear & tear, and he's 38 in Crisis Four, right?

So, seeing as most of you are waiting on Dark Winter, and this forum is about AM and his writing, why not, for a giggle, conjure up a letter to a friend in which you describe the day you were introduced to Nick Stone. The meeting can be anywhere in the world..maximum 250 words. Say if you think it would be fun, and if enough are interested how about posting the results on Friday/Saturday?

Bear in mind his face alone might reveal the hallmarks of his trade, and his general demeanour will likely impact upon your psyche, and best of all, you get to reflect upon your own image of Nick Stone. It'll be amusing to see how many similarities pop up...Firstly, remember it's purely for fun so no worries on grammar etc...Secondly, you can fantasise on how he reacts to you, whether he's overtly forward, slightly shy, or plain cool dude like, or all three...

What does everone else think do you prefer A Mcnab or C Ryan and why

>>By Feedthegoat77   (Wednesday, 18 Jun 2003 11:58)

Shhh! Dont tell! I am writing this at work - but you see, when you are an SAS commando, such as I am, you learn to talk into your collar without moving your lips, and you learn to type non-work related things without moving your er...fingers..or something. Anyway - I have never read C Ryan - though point me in the right direction and I shall certainly.

ooh! compromised (hahaha)

(boss coming in)

will tell you about last night's jungle run chased by enemy (me running from the dog in the woods, but I wont spoil it now...giggle)

I will say though - to be honest, although I do dally about who is who in Andy's books, I dont pay all that much thought to it - part of the fun I suppose of reading a book is letting it absorb you and capture the imagination - but even if we work out who's who, we'll never find out any more than that about them, so why bother? imagine if someone was scouring books and the internet to find out about you? makes me shudder personally.

>>By Caroline   (Wednesday, 18 Jun 2003 12:24)

But I will say... for all you ladies there (and gents who want it) I do have as my desktop wallpaper a cracking picture of Sean Bean as Andy McNab from http://www.full-of-beans.net/bravo-2-zero/
oocha! I mean since we cannae see the real thing, this is definitely next best. You just would, wouldnt you! haha

*hot flush* giggle

>>By Caroline   (Wednesday, 18 Jun 2003 12:27)

try reading "the real bravo two zero" by Michael Asher. its sheds different light on "bravo two zero" and "the one that got away"

Greed was a good read, as was Liberation day. I am looking forward to Dark Winter...anyone have any ideas as to what its about (sorry if that has already been discussed here)

Welcome, Feedthegoat77. Having only read CR's TOTGA, I'm not really in a position to compare, but if it's a simple comparison of TOTGA to B20, I by far prefer AM's writing style, the flow, the pacing, the voice, the humour....

Got me grinning again, Caroline, with your SAS spin on everyday life...

May I shift gears for a moment, please?

Scouse, are you still with us? Been wondering if you've gotten your books yet? Particularly BoF. A few of us have read it now, so I'm wondering if you've begun yet. Plus I've just started CQB and can understand why you and Lynn recommended. I'm juggling reading three books right now, but CQB just bumped the other two right off my priority list. vbg, vbw!

Sort of TZ (Twilight Zone-ish) to have found these two items this morning, considering Mike Curtis being Welsh.... and the one item has B20's translation and publication stats....

Welcome, Lee....

Re: Dark Winter -- you can check six posts above yours on this page and also pg 17, 1st post...

Other than Liberation Day, which of AM's books have you read? I have not read Asher's book (haven't committed to spending the $ to purchase it from Amazon UK since it's not available in US).

As Am-I-Binned ain't too keen on fantasies consider fantasy letter binned!!!

Never mind - shame though, I had quite a good prize lined up for the best one, being as I couldn't enter on the basis of too much insider knowledge on the man himself...

*graon* Carolina do some work! in a minute - but may I ask a question please?
before I do - Mhorag and Brownie, I am a Jock too - a posh jock, but one none the less. And Mhorag - I love that name! A good scottish name.

anyway - I saw the post about having times and dates on the threads but some people have written some good stuff pages ago and I want to reply but by the time i get this far I cannae mind what I am replying to - so wouldnt it be ace to have a thingy where you can quote a person and then write your reply underneath. And - you can set up profiles and you can click on the persons name and find out about them?

Another question - is after reading an AM book - does anyone else ever feel yourself kicking into AM - or NS (see, I'm in with the lingo now!) mode - for example even now , though I read Remote COntrol ages ago (and then turned back the front and read it all again) I walk down the street and I'm glancing at people - are the hovering too long? I go to meet someone and I hang back to be a couple of minutes late and watch them approach and all that - apart from it being good fun, it's also somewhat stupid since I hang back recce'ing long enough for my friends to think I am not coming and they get up and go home when I take my eyes off them for a second, which results in me having to run down the street waving after them, which is not only undignified for a young lady but is also a dead giveaway. (Do I talk too much?)

So do you reckon AM pops into this forum? I read a post somewhere that said he was among us, well if he is, d'y fancy sending me a copy of Liberation Day? Ah go on, you KNOW you were always my favourite.....
