Welcome, Chrissy.... There doesn't seem to be too much info available yet on Dark Winter, but you can learn as much as we know so far from the first post on pg 17.
Hi again, Scouse...
From your description, I recognized the book you were talking about. A long time ago, when I'd been doing "Operation Flavius" homework, I remember seeing a book about Mairead Farrell and an SAS soldier. Warning! This will probably be way more info than you ever wanted... vbg... but (shrug) you did ask.... vbw!
There seem to be two books, both by Scott Graham, but I think actually it's just the one book, only it was retitled when released in paperback; per Amazon.co.uk:
"Violent Delights: The True Story of an SAS Hero's Love for an IRA Killer" (Hdbk) The true story of a tragic love affair between an heroic SAS operative and an IRA terrorist. Scott Graham was decorated for heroism in Northern Ireland and the Falklands, and he fought battles in which more than a dozen IRA terrorists were killed. Mairead Farrell was petite, young and darkly beautiful and she planted bombs for the IRA. Together the two shared a deadly and terrible secret. They loved one another, against the taboos of both their armies, for 14 years. The clandestine love affair reached its crescendo with one of the most controversial incidents in the history of the SAS.
"Shoot to Kill" (Ppbk) (listed on another site as "Blood on the Rock") Scott Graham was a formidable SAS soldier. Decorated for his heroism in Northern Ireland and the Falklands, he fought gun battles in which more than a dozen IRA terrorists were killed. Mairead Farrell planted bombs for the IRA. For 14 years they carried on a clandestine affair, which reached its crescendo with the controversial shooting of three unarmed IRA terrorists on the Rock of Gibraltar. This is the true story of this extraordinary romance, and of the killings that shocked the world.
Apparently family and friends of Mairead claim "Violent Delights" is complete fabrication: http://www.irlnet.com/aprn/archive/1997/November06/06notw.html
Also found "Violent Delights" in a listing of SAS related books: http://www.specwarnet.com/store/books/british.html
Below are some links on Mairead that I had saved from the Operation Flavius homework. It might be interesting to find out specifics about Graham's years of service and compare timelines with Mairead's to see if plausible/feasible (aaah, homework for another rainy day)... http://freespace.virgin.net/sean.farrell/Maireed_Farrell.htm http://www.relativesforjustice.com/victims/victims_state_f_l.htm http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/8151/gilbralter.html http://www.inac.org/irishpows/hungerstrikes/chapter49.html
Hallo, Sheba...
Re: John Nichol -- Just recently got "Tornado Down" (yep, another eBay) by John Nichol and John Peters, but I think both of them have gone on to write other books since GW1. I've only just started TD and the structure is very interesting because both are telling their stories concurrently. Interesting in relation to B20 and Soldier 5, too, because, from what I understand, Mike Coburn has indicated AM may have exaggerated some of the torture, but from the little I've read so far of JN's and JP's experiences, AM may have actually used his gift for understatement and/or omission.

hi
so what did everyone think of liberation day???
>>By chrissy (Sunday, 25 May 2003 22:20)
Aaah, Chrissy...
Soldier 5 is eagerly awaited by all here I believe, but your question brings with it a rather long answer....
Mike Coburn is the author (in B20, he is Mark the Kiwi), but he's been unable to have his book published due to his having signed the "Confidentiality Agreement" in 1996. Since 1996, members of the SAS and SBS have been ordered to sign these agreements which prohibit them from discussing their time as elite soldiers without official sanction. If they refuse to sign, they are thrown out (RTU'd). New recruits sign as a condition of service. The British Government claimed Mike had breached the confidentiality agreement, and the courts decided that Mike could publish but all proceeds are to be turned over the British Government.
Great, huh?!? You put your life on the line thinking that you're valued and will always be rescued if it comes to that, but instead you're abandoned -- abandoned because the Brits (de la Billiere) would lose face to the US (Schwartzkopf) after claiming the SAS could take care of themselves completely -- so you're actually a liability, an embarrassment, better sacrificed/dead than rescued. Then when you actually do get back, you're told you're luck you aren't being court-martialed (for what?!?!). And later, when you find out just how expendable you were (that the signals had gotten through) and you know the full story has yet been told by AM and CR, you decide you want to tell what you know and blow the whistle. But at what price?!? Because the courts then decide that you have to turn over all the proceeds to the British government!
Good news, though -- some here have posted that "Soldier 5 will be published in a jurisdiction where the British cannot get their hands on the profits" (i.e., Russia, Germany, France, Italy).
So we anxiously wait...
(While I was responding to your Soldier 5 question, Chrissy, you posted your question regarding Liberation Day, but I've already been here way too long today. If you read back through some of the previous pages, you will see LD being discussed. Please keep in mind, since you're new here, that not all of us have read LD yet.... so "spoiler warnings" may be appropriate.)
>>By am-i-binned (Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:02)
I'd just like to say I was disapointed with the ending of LB when Nick....only joking a-i-b ;-) couldn't resist a little joke ref: your spoiler warning!
Hi Chrissy, there are now a lot of pages on this site, and it'll take forever to read them all (I know I haven't yet 'cos I'm still pretty new myself!) but if you flick back through the more recent ones, you'll see quite a bit of discussion re: fave AM books etc.
Personally I would list LB as last in my faves, with Remote Control tops (fiction) but like everything, it's all down to personal taste. Have you read AM's books in order?
A-I-B - I believe John Nichol tried to break into the fiction world and had some success in the UK, but I haven't seen a new release for some time. I suppose it's difficult to think up new and exciting stories for a pilot without sounding repetative. (Took off, shot down escaped...)
Chrissy, have you read any of Chris Ryan's fiction? He's pretty good and there's the Dean Francis forum on gnooks. He's still trying to get published but has some samples of his work on his web-site www.dean-francis.co.uk
welcome to the site from a fellow newby :-)
>>By Sheba (Monday, 26 May 2003 00:12)
So sorry, Chrissy, Sheba is saying what I meant to ... try from about pg 22 forward.
Sheba, have you read John Nichol's fiction then? If so, do you recommend? And I'm very sorry but I'm afraid I have to disagree with you on DF's work -- I think DF is much better than just "pretty good"! ... bsag (big smart-arse grin)
Tomorrow is Memorial Day (in US), so it got me thinking about military honors, etc., and I remembered a B20 question that I'm hoping someone here may be able to answer. Other than Andy, Chris, Bob and Steve (Legs), did the other members of B20 receive any medals, awards, citations, whatever? Did Vince receive anything? I was wondering if maybe Dinger, Mike and Mal were not mentioned since at the time of B20's publication they would have still been active members of the Regiment.
>>By am-i-binned (Monday, 26 May 2003 01:34)
Curses! A hasty rant makes for stupid flubs! In my "Mike Betrayed" rant above, I just spotted typos... should read:
... you're told you're LUCKY you aren't being court-martialed... ... you know the full story has NOT yet been told by AM and CR...
>>By am-i-binned (Monday, 26 May 2003 01:46)
New here today.
Reading through backlist to get a an idea of where ya'll coming from. Surprised no one mentioned checking awards lists to see how many times one person aka Andy McNab got a dong. If one got a medal for b20 they all woulda. Standard policy coz no one was braver than the other. They were in it together no heroic doings like saving a man by walking with him on their backs and getting him home safe. They were all too busy saving their own arses and I reckon they got split up coz their leader was scared shitless.

CF casting - how about Winona Ryder for Sarah? - I'm sure she would STEAL the show :-D...sorry, bad joke, but she does have that cold/hard look about her, although not as attractive as AM describes Sarah I feel
>>By Sheba (Monday, 26 May 2003 11:07)
hi sheba
i read all his books in order and i feel for the non-fiction my fave would be immediate action and for fiction my fave would be crisis four or remote control i cant decide!
i really dont know who i would cast for sarah but i dont think i would choose winona ryder ( no offence) i dont know why though maybe its because of what u said she is not as attractive as AM describes sarah
thanx for the nice welcome
hi am-i-binned

Holland, May 26
Hi Boris, glad you’re back…. but I didn’t see you coming.. when did you arrive?? ;-) (and please don’t talk about 30°c beaches while I’m at work… )
Re: Casting calls I saw J.Bond’s " Die another day" a couple of days ago and there was this agent played by Colin Salmon, think he is a perfect Josh.
Anyone who can get a copy of Frank Collins’ Baptism of Fire should read it, I love it. It doesn’t have Andy’s humor but it has a lot in return. I got a lot sympathy for the man and it’s unbelievable his life has ended shortly after publication. I haven’t finished the book completely yet but I can recommend it by what I have read so far.
Sheba, my favorite (fiction) is also Remote Control but I like the others too. I think they’re all different and that’s an achievement. So some may be little better than others but they’re all worth reading. Only one thing I mentioned before: I missed hearing about Kelly and I hope we’ll hear from her again. About Tom Abraham’s The Cage: there was something in the news about him being a fake with a fake story.. (www.miafacts.org/tom_abraham) But I must say I only read quickly through so I don’t know the whole story.
Hoar’y you can’t leave, we haven’t finished counseling.
Hi Chrissy, no problem in repeating ourselves… we can talk and talk and talk….26 pages already.
About exaggeration or understatement of torture… The fact that Stan was captured instead of shot at the spot while he just killed one of his capturers seems indication that they prefer to capture him/them alive to get information from him/them. To get the information there must have been ‘ some’ pressure, physically and mentally. Now we can argue about how much pressure, how much abuse but it’s doesn’t matter. He didn’t have a jolly good time in prison, my 14 year old blind ‘n deaf dog can understand that.
And now for the good news……. We have Andyb in our midst who’s gonna tell us how he would have handled the job instead of ‘saving his own arse and being scared shitless’ So go ahead Andyb… we’re all ears
Lynn

Hey folks, there's a great SIS novel that might get published abroad. It's called Death in the Mirror. It's got a wacky psychological twist to it. It starts with a fouled mission in distant lands, sort of reminiscent of B20, only on his return this geazer and his mates gets unfriendly insider pressure from senior personnel 22 SAS so he looks for a way out with a good pension scheme and quits and writes a story that embarrasses the MoD and then he tells his own story in another book. Thing is though, a couple of bestselling books ain't enough dough for bestselling alimony fees and he's got all the usual matrimonial debts hanging round his neck. That's the hazard of get rich quick schemes, always someone right on your arse wanting a large slice of your cake. Anyhow he's in stook financial like and needs some hard cash. What he's gotten himself into gets him some real NASTY PALS but he does it all the same, and SIS is willing to let him do whatever needs to be done on the dirty side of the tracks. He's soon in with those NASTY PALS who'd slit his gut as soon as look at his money belt full of dough after a Columbian heist. Thing is nobody knows how much money he discovered was tucked away in a Caymen Island bank account for the IRA and he's changed all the pswds and codes, and how can he start spending a lot of money and no one latch on to where its coming from? So he writes some more books, novels this time and it don't matter if they don't make him much money coz he's still got that hidden stash that he can start laundering from one country to another through houses he buys all over the place and sells on again and businesses he sets up as a hot pension in case he lives long enough to enjoy it. That's when things start to go wrong coz he's got all these business deals going down and he's losing money big time as business partners leak money like dripping taps into their own bank accounts and their own businesses that he don't know nothing about. All of a sudden his money is going down the pan faster than he can shit the stuff from writing which is suddenly his only hope of avoiding ending up with old SAS mates of his in cardboard boxes on the streets of London. The twist is he cuts a film deal with Hollywood that few people have heard about, but when a second war pops off in the country he wrote about he's on television and radio all around the world promoting himself. Meantime a messageboard pops up dedicated to his non de plume where he hangs out coz he can't lead a normal life no more, but his NASTY PALS from Columbia have him well sussed and he ends up hiding out more than he did before, until someone innocently posts a plot on his message board which solves his dilemma.
The Death in the Mirror the hero character is seeing as clear as the sun sparking off its own reflection in water, is suddenly blurred beneath the ripples of a butterfly's wings. The end is real neat, and he walks away without ever having to look over his shoulder again. The way in which he celebrates is a classic reborn male with VBG!

Hey Sheba, how you doing? Just checked out your web site.
It's going well here, what with all these people from foreign lands I see. Quite cyber active, though gotta say: hat checkout money is overdue so guess the hats will go into lost property...

Haven't read B20 cause AM's books are hard to find here. Ican only get them by Amazon, AM isn't known here actually. Just read a small interview by him once on Panorama where there was also a foto of him, only thing you can see are the palm of his hands and mouth wrinckles (did I get that right?) www.panorama.it/mondo/medioriente/articolo/ix1-A020001014570. Maybe he should do some more pubblicity here in Italy.

Swedish reader! Delighted to see you here again!
And you too, Lynn (altho you've only been away a bit... seemed like longer...)
With so many new voices here today... it's very reassuring to hear familiar friendly FT ones too....
Thanks, Sr, for the referral to bol.com. A quick look at the pricing seems to indicate that they are cheaper than Amazon.uk (which I only use when I'm tired of waiting for eBay)! Good stuff -- fanx!
>>By am-i-binned (Monday, 26 May 2003 15:40)
Re Andyb..Like lynn,i would love to know how you would have handled the situation yourself, deep behind enemy lines in Iraq, with lost comms, and with a bunch of ragheads chasing you.The SAS maybe brilliant highly trained soldiers, but there only human like us(well some of us)and can't perform miracles.
Re peusydonums(spell check) Chrissy/Boris/Jaffa..your the same person right? Bol is a good site for books, also blackwells, but ebay is your best bet,the uk site has tons of AM books, with most of the sellers delivering worldwide.
RE S5,whilst scouring cyber world for any new info on the book,i came across a site to do with the NZ SAS, globalspecops.com/nz.html.As i scrolled down the page there was a section on recomended books, and S5 was one of them, along with the publishers name. In 1998,did mark coburn get the book into print before the MOD put a stop on it?. if he did, ebay in NZ and OZ,could be getting a visit from me.
>>By scouse (Monday, 26 May 2003 16:44)
Hi, Scouse....
I'm hoping I'm wrong but I don't think Soldier 5 ever made it to publication. It did get an ISBN but was stopped before printing --major bummer! Could you see, though, if there were copies out there? Even if only you and me, just think how that eBay bidding would go! Well, okay, you'd win easy cuz I'm too tapped but, oooh, if I were rich...
