Hello AIB,

I have been to Portmeirion. It is a very strang place including Architecture from all over the world and a ship that looks like it's floating but is actually a building. It's quite a bizarre and beautiful place.

I think at this time I think it is only fair to say that I have only read Bravo Two Zero. What is the first one with Nick Stone in?

Re: the debate on selling memoirs etc. I think that one of the problems the Army had with many of the books is the proximity of publication to the actual events. For instance Peter Wrights Spycatcher has recently been allowed to be published for the first time in Britain as it is no longer seen to compromise operations.

Having said that I think the SAS also likes to keep it's mysterious persona because they enjoy the feeling of being thought of as elite.

AIB that's a fair comment and I can't argue against that. In that case McNab has the moral victory over me and I'm on the same level as Chris Ryan!!

Robbieboy you want to read Remote Control first (also by far the best) as that's the first Nick Stone book. Don't do what I did and read them backwards (kept getting people confused!). (Order goes Remote Control, Crisis Four, Firewall, Last Light and then Liberation Day - have i got that right guys?) If you haven't read Immediate Action either that's well worth a look, plenty of memorable comments in that book but beware some parts will make you laugh out loud (P for Plenty!)

>>By Bethan   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 17:11)

Thank you Bethan.

>>By RobbieBoy   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 17:15)

Sheesh, Ortlieb -- You really have to get your priorities sorted out! Polynome-division and the calculation of acceleration vs AM's board? Would have thought that's a no-brainer! VBG! VBW!

Oh, and Ortlieb -- No, no, no, no, no, no, no!!!! I am not going to try to figure out where I heard that "rabbit" line! Bethan has done quite enough "do-you-remember?" damage to my brain already, thank you very much! ;o) (btw, butt-eyes and bliss of hindsight -- hahaha -- good one!)

Neat, RobbieBoy! So do you think Portmeirion's bizarre enough for the likes of us to have our B&B there? And if I may, I'd like to amend Bethan's reply to suggest that you read Immediate Action before you start reading Remote Control and the rest of AM's fictions in publication order.

Oooh, Bethan -- P for Plenty, eh? Long, long ago, in a galaxy.. oops, I mean.. in a posting far, far aways back, Paul R requested AM's funniest one liner. Obviously we had to overrule Paul R cuz nobody can pick just one! I suppose we could all go back and read through pages and pages of previous posts to find the lists we compiled for each book, but I wouldn't mind just recreating the lists anew -- anyone else game to resurrect the laughs lists?

I think it was Liza Minelli who once said you should only speak good of the dead and (of a particular person)....'she's dead.....Good!'

>>By Pomplemous   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 18:16)

Here's an interesting item we all missed in AM's Cambridge interview:

Q: Are you becoming increasingly involved in Hollywood?
A: Yeah, we're doing a deal at the moment to get 'Remote Control' made into a film. The medium fascinates me. Being behind the camera is great.

Also, take a look at - http://www.rgshw.com/news/macnab/ - which seems to confirm AM's statement above...

So who started barking up the Crisis Four tree? Has the former been scrapped in favour of RC as No# film for NS series?

>>By buddy   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 18:16)

Crisis Four was awful! I read it and really didnt enjoy it at all - oh no take that back, it was Firewall I didn't like much - but I suspect that's dues to the love interest - bah! hahaha.

You know the guy in Firewall though - Tom - you know who I had in mind for that character when I read him - you remember the rat-boy from .... was it Snatch? The Guy Ritchie film? the one with the long hair and skinny face and raspy voice - the runt of the litter as it were. Just thought I'd share.

>>By Pomplemous   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 18:21)

Buddy, I think those items pre-date the Miramax/Crisis Four stuff which came later. Originally, it was to be RC but then CF was moved into the (currently suspended) production slot instead. I'd saved that Wycombe School site last summer ... good fun how they worked in the terminology!)

Uhm...Pomplemous, you been near any tulips lately? Love interest in Firewall? :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 19:00)

I think that if there ever is going to be a movie about one of AM's books it could be Firewall or RC, I don't think they'll make CF or LD into a film.
Due to the constant terrorist attacks in Israel, Iraq etc. I'd think it would be wiser not to make any movies involving islam and all the stuff that's going on over there. Those people can be very sensible, and one has to be carefull of what you show and tell. And anyway we see it daily on the News.
Just have a look at the "hollywood movie market" now. We've got as upcoming films mostly drama's, some comedies, thrillers etc..
Miramax.com: Upcoming films
- Humain stain
- Duplex
- Prozac nation
- the great raid ( only war film about the 6th Ranger Battalion in the Philippines )
....
So actually we have no real action films. Does the public really want them with all the violence we see on the news. Do we really want to see the White house blown up "again", or see arabs fighting against americans or europeans.
And talking about the public, who goes mostly to see the movies, we all have our DVD's or satelite programs now.
I wouldn't mind IA being filmed actually, it has a bit of everything. Drama, comedy, action, sex (if you want too) etc...
I'm reading Firewall for the moment, not all that bad, I even think it's better than RC, and I'm reading it in the Italian version (wich is awfull).
OOh well just wanted to share my point of view with all you lot .

>>By borisette   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 20:33)

Couldn't see a date/time line on the CF vs RC front...You're right, cute little snipit...

Currently suspended, huh? Say no more...

Port Meirion: great beach, the Italianate Village a beautiful puzzle in itself, and Clough's dream ha ving finally come true with the castle now in the whole frame...Definitely worth a visit...

>>By buddy   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 20:36)

Andy visited that Grammar school in May 2001... so tell my sources. My sources also tell me that they never followed up that site - they never placed the interview and they can't come up with anymore either.... Now..doesn't that sound very Spooks haha.

(emailed that guy mentioned on the site, said I wondered why the interview wasn't on the site like it promised and if it was still possible after all this time.... NOT, but he was very friendly)

Who's organising 100th page celebrations?? I know we're only at 80 (ONLY HAHA) but these things takes time. Don't forget to invite Mr. McNab again. If we invite him every special page he just might show up.. at 1000 or something. Well...that's only 920 more pages..piece of cake) :o)

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 25 Sep 2003 23:25)

Since we're on McNab and movies have any of you heard this?

"On site for the film 'The Protector' starring the yummy Gabriel Byrne, Jean Reno and a very popular Jennifer Connelly, director Michael Mann has hired ex-SAS soldier Andy McNab as their weapons and tactics consultant. This is their second pairing ever since the 1994 movie 'Heat'. Rumour has it that McNab will also have a small role in the movie. He has trained many of the movies actors in a seculded location in northern England. That's one place I'd like to be a fly on the wall at." (www.pcmovienews.com better quote them or they might get upset!)

A small role hey maybe he's overcoming his shyness and now does have a burning desire to go on Parkinson (no idea why that sticks in my head). Pity, we could have auditioned.

The laugh list sounds good! But do we have enough space?

>>By Bethan   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 10:17)

Thinking AM, heroics, charisma, secrets, etc., have/do any of you know much about the more silent heroes in the SAS genre? Such as: Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE - now that's what I call a man of utter integrity, yet still a rebel at heart...This is the kind of man who can really have me spellbound, speechless, in awe...
If you don't know much about him, this is Paxman's brief on the man:
http://www.nyt.co.uk/sir.htm

Must say, for AM to be selected for a Paxman (Interview) speaker role, one could say he's treading well-worn boards, though what a pity the notorious "Hamiltons" have tread same!

>>By buddy   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 12:18)

I cant remember - which one had that sarah wifie? um.... no, crisis four, I was right the first time!

You'll NEVER believe the evening I had - I was bowled over! I wwent for a swift half with our wee cheeky glaswegian engineer and we got chatting about the army and then the SAS> He started saying - I used to be based in Hereford, I was ace mates with this great guy, he was vain though - you know what they used tae call him? Johnny Two Combs! hahah - I laughed as my eyes bulged out with shock and surprise. He said I met that Andy McNab - that's his real name you know. I said no I am sure its not. He said - aye, and he's bald as a coot. erm....*confused* when did you last see him? years ago. uh-huh. We started talking about the Bravo Two Zero story and about in Hereford the cathedral there and how Chris Ryan took him round the back of this place to see where the unfortunates were lain. I was bowled over by it all - whether I believed it or not I dont know - but he was coming out with all of this and I said not a word about anything - just soaking up the info. He talked also about being in the TA with Billy Connolly and how he didnt like him at all etc. It's just mad sometimes how you might look at the ordinary person in the street and you dont know a single thing about them!!

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 12:41)

Pomplemouse, ooh my goddddddddddd!
AM "bald", well now isn't that a surprise.
He wasn't on the picture taken in 2002.
So what else did your friend tell, I'm curious...

Buddy, you're quite right about Fiennes. What a life he's had, really a great man.

>>By borisette   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 13:14)

aib:
By the way, the line is taken from the movie "Fire Birds", starring Tommy Lee Jones and Nicholas Cage.

>>By ortlieb   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 13:34)

woah - which picture?? like a face on picture?? and I thought it was odd because of everything I ever see him on he has hair - but then I thought well maybe it makes sense after the various traumas he's been through - I dont know. He said, naw, that's no him! (that we see,but I dont believe it). He said he knew that Mac guy with the mousie. I was stunned - he said they were fantastic people. But he also said that when Andy wrote Bravo Two Zero - he was supposed to put alot of the profits to the deceased men fund - for their families and he didnt so he's been ousted from the gang as it were - they dont like him now.
But think aboutit - Andy McNab is probably 50ish now...and he's not going to be scarless after everything - so ..... I dont know.

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 13:48)

Now you've got me confused Pomp. = Bethan = Apparently????? or what.

>>By borisette   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 14:00)

um......I wish I was clever enough to understand what you mean borisette - Pomp = Caroline. Bethan =

d'you know what? I say...EH?!?!?!?!?!

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 14:59)

My weary brain cells thank you profusely, Ortlieb!

Very cagey questioning technique, Pomplemous! Good that your skeptical cuz otherwise you might be walking with a very pronounced limp! Bald, nah! Balding on top tho? Yep, per taller source: Hoarwithy. Hmmm… AM might not appreciate being 50-ish yet – 43 for now, 44 come December. Pictures all have hair on head and most have facial (from combat stubble to full Mexican moustache). Will email you the collection…

Ooooh, Bethan! Another research project! Last mention was yonks ago (pg 36). Wonder how Mr Mann's project is doing since it’s coming on two years now. Oh no! Maybe it’s hung up in post-production special effects, putting in tiny blackout panels in each frame…

Oh man, Lynn! You're good! I would never have thought contacting the school! Hmmm.... now jes' what are they teachin' them thar kids iffin' they don't set good example by keepin' thar promises! ;o) And 100 pgs, eh? Shall we start a pool to see who can guess closest to when we'll actually hit that mark? :o) $1.00 says next Thursday at 3:00? (yeah, stingy bet, I know, but I’m broke and don’t really think my guess has that much of a shot!)

I’m having a “Six Degrees of Separation” moment this morning – connecting Sir Ranulph Fiennes to AM:

Sir Ranulph Fiennes – Feinnes, Ralph and Joseph (actors)
Actors and SAS – Christopher Lee (LotR)
Christopher Lee – Sean Bean
Sean Bean – B20…

Oooh! Did it in 5! Okay, yeah, I know I coulda done it in 2 (Fiennes – SAS – McNab), but sheesh!, any excuse to be thinking of SB! Hmm... such a warming thought! :oD

Ooooh! Neato!!!! Like the "abridged" page numbering, MG! You getting ready for us to hit 100, too? VBW! VBG!

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 15:43)

will you really email me all that? Oh man really?? like really really?

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 16:00)

oh yeah, and my wee glasgow engineer mate near fell off his chair when I said I frequented a forum all about his old mate! hahahaha

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 16:01)

"Hey, Pom, in spyland nobody points."

Uhm... sorry, Pomplemous... just flashed on Firewall there for a moment... :o)

Yeah, will do, no probs! Well, one: might want to flork MG to edit out your email address (better florking info like that, ya never know who's OP'ing us! vbw! vbg!)...

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 16:30)

I loved that line so much!!! I laughed like a laughing lady and also in Remote Control when he is showing Kelly around these places and saying that there is a door that goes right through this place and it has since been blocked off, and he says, 'finger on the pulse, me!'

>>By Pomplemous   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 17:28)

Okay, so now I'm really getting itchy for one-liners again... :o)

But I can do much better than that! Here's a passage that's missing from the UK version of Remote Control! Gee! I wonder why? VBG! VBW!

Remote Control, Ch 24

(Both UK and US versions):

I went and picked up the bag and grout her with me into the bigger office. I said, 'I want you to tell me when those pictures are all developed. Make sure you don't touch a thing, but it's really important that I know when those pictures are ready. Your daddy used to this job.'

(UK version continues):

'Did he?'

I closed the door behind us and jammed two wedges in place, then I moved into the second office and started taking more pictures. ....

(US version continues):

"Really?"

I closed the door behind us and jammed two wedges in place.

I remembered a job I'd once done with Kev. We'd been sent to plan the insertion of a visual and audio device into an arms dealer's house in Vancouver. This guy was selling nuclear detonators on the black market and we were assigned to recon the house, come back to the UK, and plan how to put the devices in so that a listening station set up in a nearby hotel room could find out was happening.

Once we got into the house we took photographs of all the bits and pieces that were needed to plan and prepare our technical attack. After a while we were just bored; it wasn't that hard a job. We went into the bedroom, wedged the door, and started going through his wife's closets. She was very young, and Danish; looking at the two of them in their pictures in the living room, I'd been sure she loved her fifty-eight-year-old grossly overweight husband; there was no way it was his millions of dollars she was interested in. It was then that Kev opened a drawer and discovered untold amounts of kinky underwear.

The rest of the night was spent taking pictures of each other with her panties over our heads. In fact, more time and effort, planning and preparation went into getting her underwear out than into most of the rest of the job. It was while we were tittering in the darkroom back at the embassy that Kev had suddenly broken out in a cold sweat, convinced he'd left a pair of panties on the bed. If he had, there was nothing we could do about it -- except imagine the overweight arms dealer finding a pair of frillies on his pillow and thinking all his Christmases had come at once.

I told Kelly to stay where she was, moved into the second office, and started taking more pictures. ...

(UK version continues):

'Did he?'

I closed the door behind us and jammed two wedges in place, then I moved into the second office and started taking more pictures. ....

----------

ROTFLMFHO!!!! (rolling on the floor laughing my fool head off!)

Wonder if the MoD thought it was so funny -- prolly not or it'd still be in, right?

LOL! LOL! (Ouch, my cheeks are so aching now!!!) LOL! LOL! :oD

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 18:58)

Sorry -- I was laughing so hard I missed a typo -- it might be acceptable to grout tiles, but not young accomplices... should have been "brought" (stupid auto-spell correction!)

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 26 Sep 2003 19:02)

Sheesh! Still laughing! Now I see I also repeated myself (well, actually repeated UK version stuff, but why nit-pick?)....

Hmm... this being the background for the implementation of the following SOP:
