synonym (noun): two words that can be interchanged in a context are said to be synonymous relative to that context
1. word meaning same as another... examples of synonyms: “environment” and “surroundings” and the verbs “tear” and “rip.” 2. alternative name: a word or expression that is used as another name for something in certain styles of speaking or writing or to emphasize a particular aspect or association. Aaaah! So you, too, have a pseudonym, Lem45! :o)

You are too kind AIB :o) So Lem.. your brain didn't do too bad. But I already binned my software, I'm sort of brainless now..so to speak. But then..some might say "what's new" :o)

Back tracking for a moment to changed names....
Does anyone know why B20, the film, used different names for Bob (Tony), Steve "Legs" (Baz), and Vince (Ray)?

I don't know if any of you get BBC2 but last night they started advertising survival Sunday (8pm, well it is in Wales anyway).
First up is SAS survival secrets and I quote. "Never before on television has the technology, terminology and weapons used by British Special forces been looked at in such detail. SAS Survival Secrets is a fascinating insight into covert operating techniques and strategies needed to survive the world's toughest military unit." Eddie Stone is one of the ex-soldiers doing it. So what do people think of that? Is this worse or the same as McNab et al in their books. The BBC are going SAS mad what with Hunting Chris Ryan too.
Do these soldiers really never want to hang up their boots or stay indoors with a nice cup of tea? Thank God I was blessed with civvie laziness.
>>By Bethan (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 09:49)
Bethan:
I suspect Ryan, Stone and other ex Reg lads don't have any trouble hanging up their boots as the £'s start flowing into their bank-accounts. Besides, people passing Selection for the SAS and other SF-units have a peculiar mind-set; exceptional will-power being a very important quality.

Apart from the BBC SAS Survival programmes there's also on called the SAS: The Real Story on Channel 4.
I wonder how much this is giving away?

Book-issues:
I found this one when I was surfing around in Amazon:
"Sex Tourism: Marginal People and Liminalities" by Chris Ryan, Mike Hall
This can't be the Chris Ryan we all know? If so, what the HELL is he up to these days?!?
Moving on: has anyone read this book?
"The Encyclopedia of the World's Special Forces" by Mike McKinney (Foreword), Mike Ryan, Chris Mann, Alexander Stilwell
>>By ortlieb (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 14:04)
Hello Ortileb,
It seems that it is his book. Interesting...
>>By RobbieBoy (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 14:40)
Hello again Ortileb,
After a little investigation the Chris Ryan of the above book is in the Tourism Programme of Massey University, New Zealand.
Obviously Amazon's code is not clever enough to distinguish between two different Authors of the same name.
>>By RobbieBoy (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 14:52)
Phew! Sure glad that Sex Tourism thingie is cleared up! Who would ever think for a moment that CR might write about s-e-x? ;o)
Hi, Ortlieb... Re: Encyclopedia of of the World's Special Forces I've seen it listed but haven't read. Have you? Are you recommending it?
Welcome, RobbieBoy... Are you newly arrived or have you been lingering on the sidelines? If you don't mind (being the curious sort, I usually ask), how did you come to find this messageboard?
Okay, Bethan... Not nice to taunt those of us with BBC deficit! Curious: Are our (stupid) "Survivor" shows broadcast over there? The latest group got a surprise (shades of E&E phase of Selection). They thought they'd have a few days before actually starting the survival ordeal. Instead, they were literally thrown overboard with only the clothes they were wearing. At least the Selection candidates got a little tin full of odds & ends to tuck in the pocket of their WWII great coats! :o) (I've never watched any of the series but there's just no way to avoid all the hype over here!) Speaking of those little tins, has anyone seen them being sold on eBay? Christmas is coming -- maybe a little something to keep in the glove compartment? LOL!

Howdy! Haven't read the "Encyclopedia of of the World's Special Forces". I just stumbled onto it when I was doing a general Chris Ryan-search (when I also found the Sex Tourism book). I'm considering buying it, but if it's reliable is another question though. ;)
The Discovery Channel used to broadcast a lot of SAS-shows a few years ago, but it seems like they've cut it out completely. I managed to record a few shows on tape though, one being a documentary of the Selection for the Australian SAS. Vely intelesting. :)
>>By ortlieb (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 19:55)
Uhm... Ortlieb?... considering buying which one? LOL!!!!!
Neat on the tapings! But I'll bet your format is PAL, right?
>>By am-i-binned (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 20:22)
Damn... my Bangkok-vacation has been compromised! Don't be surprised if you receive a letter with mysterious powder in it. :) *LOL*
Yes, our format over here is PAL. But don't you guys have VCR's that support PAL-playback? VCR's with NTSC-playback became standard over here 6-7 years ago.
>>By ortlieb (Friday, 19 Sep 2003 20:36)
Yeah, am-i-binned, its a real interesting site. I had no idea that Ranulph Fiennes was in the SAS.
I've seen you guys mention Soldier five in previous pages. There was a bootleg copy floating around here. I'll see if i can get it.
>>By Always Surfin (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 03:13)
Unfortunately, Ortlieb, multi-format DVD players are more common here. I had looked into VHS PAL players a while back but it seemed I'd also have to invest in a TV that could accept the converted images. Just thinking, tho, if you can convert your tapes to DVDs.... hmmm.... maybe a nice little side-line business? ;o)
Oooh, Always Surfin, now you have all of us hanging! :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 20:06)
Always surfin.... you can make a couple of people here very happy if you could come up with a copy... :o)
>>By Lynn (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 20:53)
(but of course we won't say this in public) hahaha
>>By Lynn (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 20:55)
am-i-binned:
I'll do some research regarding converting VHS-tapes into DVD's. I think there's a secondary option as well: converting the VHS-tapes into computer MPEG-files (and then burn it onto a CD).
Always Surfin:
Bootleg-copy of Soldier Five, eh? I hope you're aware of the fact that you're now indirectly responsible, as most regular posters in here have short-circuited their keyboards (too much saliva). *LOL*
>>By ortlieb (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 22:22)
No promises: I'll do my best.
>>By Always Surfin (Saturday, 20 Sep 2003 22:42)
Gotta be quick - not enough hours in the day - but here's a link you may find interesting - and it's a bloody good cause too http://www.spectreevents.co.uk/Auction
note tp sp101whatever - but definately not linked to the above
don't believe all you read on the internet.......;o)
speak soon all
>>By Apparently (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 12:42)
meant to say 'note to' - apologies. Told you I was in a rush!
>>By Apparently (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 12:43)
Thanks, Apparently -- good cause and interesting site!
Oooh, maybe we could offer them a different fundraising option tho. How 'bout if we enroll as a group in one of their customized courses and they can donate our tuition? Anybody game for "Board's Weekend Out" combat training? :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 14:21)
I'm in for a training course with you lot! (but I'm afraid our vocal cords will get the most exercise). Nice site, nice pictures too. I can't play the videos though.. :o) Lynn
>>By Lynn (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 15:37)
Yeah, Lynn, think you're right about our vocal cords (in LUPs at least) -- but considering our strenuous eye/finger coordination workouts here, we should be quite (or quiet?) outstanding sending and receiving silent hand signals! (vbg! vbw!)
>>By am-i-binned (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 15:57)
Apparently.......
I was obviously being a touch too subtle.....yes but not everything is false either.
>>By sp10122 (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 17:24)
Oh com'on AIB, hand signals?? When ever did we need those with antennas like ours ?? Come to think of it..we would make an excellent spy-couple... no need for any modern communication systems.... so we can't be listened in (whatever that expression is.. bugged? but you know what I mean) since all we need/use are brain-waves.
Hi Sp.. You are still talking about info you found on the Net right.. any info you think is interesting to us? Then please share.
>>By Lynn (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 17:40)
Oh terrific, Lynn! To be TZ with you is one thing, but now I have a mental image of the two rolly-polly bugs, Tuck and Roll, from "A Bug's Life" crossed with Uncle Martin, the Martian... :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 19:56)
am-i-binned and lynn:
Antennas AIB? You're not carrying a VHF radioset on your back for "added realism" when reading SAS- books I hope?!
If not, I suppose the only option left is that you're equipped with some anatomical qualities you haven't shared with me yet. ;) Oh, NOW I've got it. You're a mutant - just like the ones in X-men. Yeah, that's it. One piece of advice though: be aware of the danger involved when picking your nose. ;)
>>By ortlieb (Sunday, 21 Sep 2003 20:50)
Well now AIB and Ortlieb... I was completely serious...spiritual even !!! And you make fun of me! And ladies don't pick noses Ortie! (all spoken in an extremely strict voice...picked it up???) ! ! o o l ~~ :o) Lynn
