That is..if it contains the info it says it does... Like I said.. think=ouch. So maybe I'm wrong here...and I would like to be told so.

So far, I've really enjoyed all your comments and have learnt a thing or two things I didn't know about SAS stuff. However, I've finally been prompted to write my bit, in defence of my hero Eddie Stone. I think he's a great character and adds life to the SAS series. As much as I enjoy seeing re-enactions and "how it's done" stuff, it gets a tad boring when shots of all those involved are blanked out and all you can see are hazy camouflaged figures on the horizon or an arm here and a boot there.
Oh, and he's not porky as has been cruelly suggested ..... it's just all those rations of burgers and beans he's had to consume for all those takes. Pay no attention, Eddie.
>>By asnoop (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 02:51)
Oh asnoop the word was podgy not porky (there is a big difference!) and are you surprised? I'm sure he won't care and the bottom line is he could still rip my head off even with a spare tyre or two.
I have a question for you all please put me out of my misery! I was watching The Real SAS Story last night and our friend McAleese with the moustache was on it. He admitted he has two eyes tattooed on his backside now where have I read that before? I know I have and it was something about the ladies loved it but can I remember exactly where can I hell. It's been driving me insane all night and I can't for the life of me remember, like an impossible name that tune. I'm relying on you all to give me back my sanity!!
>>By Bethan (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 10:17)
Great Bethan, now you've got me brain tied in a knot too. I remember something like that too. Someone pulling his pants down and showing 2 tattooed eyes... But where indeed????
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 11:01)
Oh, fanx a whole helluva lot, Bethan! Like it's not hard enough getting the cylinders firing smoothly in the morning, now you've got me joining you and Lynn! For sure it's not IA. I'm leaning strongly to SS, if not, maybe CQB, but, doggone, was it MTTS? Oooh, all the more reason to input books! "Find" is so much more reliable in database than in cranium...
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 13:04)
Glad to inflict my misery on others! Since I've only read Sabre Squadron I'll join you in leaning towards that but I read that ages ago and can't remember all of it. Ortlieb, you seem to be the Spence man please help us!! Mind you we could just pretend that's the right answer for the sake of our mental health.
>>By Bethan (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 13:10)
Well well isn't it amazing what you can find on the internet when you're bored. This should really get up the noses of those who hate ex-regiment members giving away secrets I have to say I think this might be taking things a little too far especially....
"we will also give you the chance to buy any and or all of the weapons and equipment that you use over the Special Forces Training Adventure Weekend"
I'm not entirely sure what a colt M4 A1 is but if it's what is in the picture what the hell would any normal person want to buy one for?
Here you browse at your leisure!

Was there not mention of the bum eyes in one of A's books? I have seen a bottom of a man with eyes tattooed on it and it is not a pretty sight, but I am sure A has written of it in one of his books - could only be Immediate Action or something or one of his characters based upon it or something.
I didnt see the Channel 4 thing last night - it was on but I wasnt concentrating but it was about the jungle warfare wasnt it? Ah well.
I am going to find out about the SBS though - cos I think it would be very interesting.
>>By Pomplemous (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 15:03)
I found this while cruising for SBS stuff. Ace wallpaper pictures of helicopters and men with guns too!! (cant remember link - just go to google and search special boat service and choose the first option and have a look around.
The Differential Theory of Special Operations Forces (Snake Model)
Upon encountering a snake in the Area of Operation (AO):
Paratrooper: Kills the snake.
Armor: Runs over snake, giggles, and looks for more snakes.
Infantry: "Look, a putty cat. Come 'ere kitty . . . Ouch! Hey, that's not a kitty cat."
Infantry (alt): "Ugh! Me see snake. Me like snake. Ouch! Me no like snake."
Army Aviation: Has GPS grid to snake. Couldn't find snake. Back to base for crew rest and the club and some sort of drink called "The Snake"
Ranger: Plays with the snake, then eats it.
Ranger (alt): Assaults the snake's home and secures it for use by friendly snakes.
SEAL: Expends all ammunition, several grenades and calls for naval gunfire in a failed attempt to kill the snake. The snake bites the SEAL then retreats to safety.
Corps Artillery: Kills snake, but in the process kills several hundred civilians with a massive TOT with three FA BDEs in support. Mission is considered a success and all participants are awarded Silver Stars. (Cooks, Mechanics, Legal Clerks etc.)
Marine Recon: Follows the snake and gets lost.
Combat Controller: Guides the snake elsewhere.
Pararescue: Wounds the snake in first encounter, then feverishly works to save the snake's life.
Special Forces: Makes contact with the snake, builds rapport, wins its heart and mind, then trains it to kill other snakes

LOL!!! Fanx, Pomplemous! Excellent relief for churning brain cells! Now you've got me wondering -- I still don't think it's AM's story, but since I've only read TOTGA once, could it be CR's?
Oooooh, Bethan! "Minimum 4 people [1 patrol] £250.00 per person equals a total adventure cost of £1,000.00. For an adventure involving 12 people 2 people go for free, that's a saving of £500.00."
How can we pass up such a bargain?!? (Toss ya for #11 or #12 spot...vbg!) Plus, they throw in one of these for free:
"MARUI COLT M4 A1 Carbine [air gun] The favourite weapon of the Gulf War. Mag capacity 60 rounds. Selective fire - single or auto (700rpm approx) Battery & Charger for UK voltages included." £363.00 value plus £7.94 for 1600 heavy duty ( .20 gm) plastic BB pellets, re-usable.(www.airgunsports.com/Colt_M4.html)
Hmmm... re-usable BB pellets? Well, wouldn't that just be a fun day out! -- collecting expended ammo, 1600 no less! ;o)

VBG Pommetje (dutch abbreviation for your beautiful 'name') !!
Haven't read SS and the eyes ring a bell too. So not SS (or not only SS) Have read CQB but that was a couple of years ago and I don't think it was that long ago (that I read about the eyes) What about Frank Collins? Have you read that one Bethan? Or Francis Nicholson? Jenny Simpson? What's MTTS? Don't think I've read it or I would know (well..).
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 16:32)
I have also read about the eyes but i havent read sabre sqaudron lol sorry. But i did read frank collins book. Could it have been in there?
>>By christina (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 17:36)
Sheesh, this is taking on a life of its own! Lynn, you might have hit on it with Frank Collins' Baptism of Fire...
Bethan, have you read BoF?
Swedish reader, do you recall the eyes tatoo story?
Ortlieb, PeGasus, Scouse, anybody?
Note: MTTS = FN's book Married to the SAS (aka Sex Secrets of the SAS in paperback).
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 18:14)
I think its the Kremlin device by, CR. One of the Russian Mafia has eyes on tattoed on his arse.
>>By Scouse (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 19:19)
But i havent read the kremlin device!
>>By christina (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 20:05)
Thanks, Scouse, but now I'm even worse off! Swedish reader thinks it may be CR too. I was thinking I remembered the tattoo from non-fiction (IA, TOTGA, CQB, SS, etc.) but if it's CR's fiction, I don't know why I recognize it. I've only read The Watchman and the first chapter or so of The Kremlin Device. Is it maybe a real person that CR has written into a fictional role?
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 20:21)
Oh good, Christina -- more confusion! Bethan, I'm considering suing for mental cruelty. Lynn, help! -- it's TST (tulip sniffin' time)!!! I know tulips won't help me remember, but right now I'll be happy to forget the question! :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 20:36)
I can narrow it down more i haven't read the one that got away, sabre squadron or the watchman (i know i need to get reading lol)
>>By christina (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 21:07)
I am just about to start reading Sabre Squadron, after I have finished re-reading B20. Hopefully Spence slags off Ratcliffe a bit! Lots of photos in the book too, always good
>>By Ignaty (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 21:09)
The more I think about it, the more I think it was FN in one of her descriptions of SAS men. But if she described a 'real' guy it's very well possible CR used it for one of his fictional books too since they all base fiction on facts. BUT I can't check FN's book at the moment. I do know Lethe read it recently so maybe she can help us out, and you better hurry with the Kremlin Device AIB, fictional answer may be in there. And sorry.... no tulips. Waiting for new supply... I ran out yesterday on looney day. Maybe that also explains why I've read about the eyes probably twice (FN and CR ??) but can't even come up with one answer... :o|
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 21:18)
Forgot..FN = MTTS.. I rest my case. Tulip sniffing is definitely bad for your health.
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 21:19)
well it's definately not in the books I've read : TOTGA, LOF, by CR IA, B20, RC, LL, and just started FW by AM (found in a supermarket only 6 euro) MTTS by FN, naaaaah would 've remembered, got a photographical mind.
Ooh well off to do some plié and jeté, pas de bouré. (ooh f..k my feet hurt)
>>By borisette (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 22:27)
Ooh yeah and another question, ... "why is it that NS always fails in his missions.. would it be like a reflection of AM's missions when he was in the SAS or what?"
>>By borisette (Tuesday, 23 Sep 2003 22:39)
Eyes tattooed on a*se ------- "It was claimed that a miner who drank in the Rose in St Peters Street (Nottingham) had an eye tattooed on each arse cheek. 'Just to see yer through the week like'. he would shout as he dropped his keks in the bar, to reveal his prize tattoos after a customer had doubted his claim. They were probably done after some drunken Army bet in some other country, during World War Two. Colourful characters like that just don't exist anymore, wiped out as quickly as the Radford houses during the clearance programmes of the 60s and 70s" ------- Eyes on two cheeks are not that unique in the military, any more than thistles (Jocks), daffs (Taffs), shamrock (Irish), but does anyone know what Sean Bean (Sheffield lad) has on his cute little butt?
>>By buddy (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 00:35)
Well done, Sherlock! Ooops, I mean... Well done, Swedish reader!
Swedish reader found the CR passage referring to the tattoo -- Chapter 2, Tenth Man Down. But don't you go dancing away just yet, Borisette...
The plot thickens! The butt-eyes tattoo (how stupid does that sound?) has to be somewhere else, too, cuz I don't have Tenth Man Down. Going back to Pomplemous thinking it may be in an AM book, and since Scouse remembers Russian Mafia, is it in Firewall somewhere? (I'm not sure of anything anymore!) Or there's still FC's BoF... :o\
Hmmm, Borisette... Not quite sure I agree "that NS always fails in his missions." NS seems to accomplish his assignments in more satisfactory ways than if everything had gone according to initial instructions, although terrible prices are paid along the way. I do, however, agree completely that AM's B20 experience and his post-B20 disillusionment are fundamental to the core themes -- betrayal, abandonment, frustration, futility, expendability -- integrated into every one of his NS stories.
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 00:37)
Ooooh, Buddy, we're cross-posting again! Please, where is that tattoo quote from? And, uhm, altho Sean's usually a little shy around me, I'm afraid, he does have an Elvish "9" on his bod... ;o)
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 00:53)
Yes I would say Sean qualifies for a 9. Elves probably only give 10's to people with pointy ears. :)
>>By Dare (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 05:11)
re:borisette on AM/NS missions:
imho all NS missions (read 2,on my third) are a bit alike. kelly is always let down by broken promises, NS gets funked over by his own ppl. he gets pi**ed off at hierarchy and need to know. there is always somesort of twist, i.e. the mission is never as easy as it seems. parts from IA and b20 can also be recognized quite easily in the books.
another question for ppl with a history in the army or just knowledge about the subject: in the 'big four', what is this number? in finland we didn't have a number, save the no. of our personal weapon. can still remember that one though...
>>By trident (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 09:31)
Tattoo quote: A personal (other) reminiscing on his home patch: Nottingham. (famous for castle on hill, wicked High Sherrif of, and Robin Hood in "Lincoln" Green togs, hiding in Forest with bows and arrows, etc., also once famous for Nottingham lace) ...Possible ref to eye tattoo in SAS books due to serving man from that area carrying on humourous tradition!! Haven't personally seen any!!!!!!!!!!
Locale: Mid upper England betwixt Liverpool Basin (WC) and The Wash (EC). Not exactly CR country, (he from NE), but as I said, SB from same area (famous Sheffield Steel)...
>>By buddy (Wednesday, 24 Sep 2003 09:57)
Elvish "9": are we talking tattoo now, or other ?
Errol Flynn lives....
