No, I don´t want his number but i really want an e-mailaddress or address that I know he is checking.

Don´t look for cling-film. He doesn´t leave anything behind or did I missunderstand it`?

No transcript available yet.

I agrre I hate missing everyting.... It´s so hard to find information about what he is doing. Can´t spend all my time on the Internet...

He said that he´s writing for newspapers. Do you know any of rhem?
He still goes to the SAS-reunions (not banned as the newspaper said).

On the base line of twisted psychologists' theory:
Andy McNab will be using initials very close to his own name...Apparently, psychologists don't rate men as being as devious as women...

Yeah, yeah, wanna bet when it comes to getting what they want!!!!

Lynn

To answer your questions no I'm not Scottish, but I'm living in the North of England (doesn't count I guess !!).

The revised addition of The One that Got Away included a new introduction from CR apologising for his comments on Vince, he went on to explain that as Vince was a sgt in the SAS he presumed people would realise he was a very capable soldier, and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time etc etc. He also went on to justify the facy that the drama on TV TOTGA was exaggerated and he had no control over the final cut.

To add a bit of fuel to the Sean Bean for NS role - I read all of Bernard Cornwell's Sharpe series before I saw the TV series and SB played the role to a tee.

Take care

Uh-oh, Buddy -- wanna help your poor "language-impaired" US cousin? Don't know "plum-duck ole vanity" -- might venture a guess but guess my venture might be wrong (not that that would be a first for me, would it?).... fanx in advance!

Interesting comment re: initials, particularly when you look at Andy's signature samples, and considering he frequently comments on that very same thing throughout his Nick Stone books.

Thanks, Wellington, for the info on CR's comments; just a shame apology/comments have been so long in the coming. Absolutely agree with you on SB as Sharpe! I did just the reverse, tho' -- saw the series on our PBS (public broadcasting system) first then read the books! Quite frankly, it was totally down to Sean Bean as the catalyst!

I was just wandering am-i-binned, why are my comments not appearing with a date and time stamp at the top ?? Are you all adding this yourselves or am I missing out on something.

Sun 09/03/03 17.41 (GMT) UK - hand-typed time differential

Plum-Duck ole vanity: strutting its stuff, feathers on display, out of the water so no ripples to spoil its reflection!!

A M initials: bearing in mind he worked undercover, bearing in mind the subconscious has a part to play in alter-ego, noting his having *painted* the obvious in his Nick Stone books, I would suggest looking to the rules of chess for clues!!

Thinking of which, an amusing addition to signature at end of e-mail, received from AM's lit agent 'tother day, (assistant probably) said it all on the adoration front...

Documentaries "these days" have become an extension of tabloid journalism: bare facts sensationalised and TV rating figures more important than indepth, unbiased, investigative factual evidence...

Su, 9/3/03 (2:00pm) US

Short answer regarding the time/dates on our postings, Wellington, is that we try to remember to included date, time and country of posting.

Long answer is that there is another way to see consistent timestamps automatically included (the way I can) by using a login id. Country is still up to the poster to include.

If you've read through some of our earliest posts, you'll see postings from and references to "MG" who created and maintains GNOD (Global Network of Dreams) of which this site (gnooks.com) is a part. MG has implemented automatic timestamps but in order to see them you need to email to MG at -- gnod@gnod.net -- and he will provide you with a personal password.

As MG continues to upgrade the features of GNOD, a login id will provide other advantages as well. For more info, you can check -- www.gnoosic.com/discussion/gnod+community.html.

MG already knows that I think he is most excellent! I have no doubts whatsoever that you'll be very pleased if you decide to register with him as I have done.

One other item: Since you're new here, Wellington, and for anyone else new or lurking, I've just set up an email address specifically for this message board -- email4gnod@aol.com. As you may have gathered, some of us correspond offboard as well as post here. Offboarding provides one major benefit -- it keeps "private" issues out of the public forum. "Private" can be differences of opinion resulting in stubbed toes, bent noses, slapped faces, hurt feelings, or it can be discussing speculative, sensitive, negative, etc. opinions in greater detail one-on-one with another poster.

We are an extremely gregarious group here, for which I am most grateful, but even with the best of intentions, misunderstandings do sometimes crop up so being able to discuss privately is good for all of us. I'm offering to be the "go-between" for anyone here wishing to contact someone else offboard. I will NOT put anyone in direct contact with another without first receiving explicit permission. I will merely forward the request if I also have the other party's email. If you'd like to email me, I will then provide you with my "true" email address for future offboard correspondence. In this way, everyone can keep their personal email address information out of this public forum.

Why am I explaining all this? Because, down the road, MG may design a feature which will "implement a way to contact Gnod-Users, people will just leave a message for you on the server and its up to you to check those messages or not." Until then, however, this is the best solution I could think of....

Holland, March 9th

After a few sleepless ‘cause frustrated nights… Hi everyone.

I completely forgot because of the above.. to embrace the terrific news:
Swedish Reader: There will be at least tree more Nick Stone-novels !
Hooray! I feel better now.

Little Q for all of you.. if you should come across anything like ‘on-line chat’ again
PLEASE inform us so we can join in…

I happened to get my hands on the UK edition of Bravo Two Zero, checking the pictures I noticed that in my Dutch version one picture is missing:
“Our ‘Welcome home’ card from the squadron” It’s right next to the escape map… but not in my Dutch book. Do you have that picture Swedish Reader? And the US version??
On the back of my Dutch book (also paperback) there’s a picture of the whole team. This one is not on the UK one.

Re: Think you musta had an extra large serving of Buddy's breakfast cereal!
Maybe I’m like the grey man too… I merge into my surroundings.
If we continue this long enough we may all be one and the same…

Re: maybe all of us here should incorporate ourselves
That would be called a fanclub. Not even a bad idea.

Re: Swedish Reader: No transcript available yet.
I noticed. I check from time to time. If not soon available I’ll contact them (again)

Re: Andy McNab will be using initials very close to his own name
If we could believe the Nick Stone novels the name Andy should be correct too.. just a slightly different surname (I came up with this without knowing anything of chess. So let me know if I should take lessons or can do without them)

Re: psychologists don't rate men as being as devious as women...
Would that be rated by a male or female psychologist??

Re: Wellington: I'm not Scottish, living in the North of England (doesn't count I guess !!).
Mmmm. If you’d asked me two days ago I’d say no. But I recovered my good mood again so OK, it will do.
Just kidding. You’re welcome from anywhere Wellington.

Re: The revised addition of The One that Got Away
Great ! Thanks. It’s not new information but I didn’t know he made it official in a revised addition.

Re: Buddy: an amusing addition to signature at end of e-mail, received from AM's lit agent 'tother day, (assistant probably) said it all on the adoration front...
I’ll bite. Please tell me more/explain.

Re: Am-I-Binned: I've just set up an email address specifically for this message board –
You’re brilliant ! You’ve just been promoted to sergeant of
F-troop!
(no really, good idea Am-I-Binned-no-your-not)

Take care all gregarious-group-members,
Till soon !

Oooooh, anyone for a Twilight Zone moment?

Buddy, if you're talking about the Panorama BBC 1 program from 10/2/02, I was just reading through that transcript again this morning! Here's the link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/audio_video/programmes/ panorama/transcripts/transcript_10_02_02.txt

Started out this morning looking for the Four Corners program on B20 that Paul cited. The one I found seemed to be the same as the Panorama program so that's why I was reading the BBC-1 transcript.

Paul, did the program you were talking air more recently? The Four Corners program I found aired 25/2/02. Here's the link: http://abc.net.au/4corners/archives/2002a_Monday25February2002.htm

Must say re-reading Ratcliffe's comments today absolutely set my teeth gnashing! I was even thinking of cut&pasting them here for discussion but decided to delay until I had more time. Then you post this, Buddy!

de-de-de-de de-de-de-de....

Hallo, All --

Thanks, Swedish reader -- I'm looking forward to meeting you offboard. And thanks, Lynn, for the promotion, but I don't think I'm that calibre... I'd rather remain "just one of the lads"....

Quick follow-up re: Panorama BBC 1 link that I posted.

If you cut&paste the address, you must remove the blank space between programmes/ panorama/ (where the line wraps) or the link won't work (you'll get "page not found").

Just so you know, MG has these pages set up to automatically adjust to the length of unbroken text instead of wrapping. Because the Panorama link is so long, the format of this page got messed up (went w-a-y w-i-d-e ). I asked MG to reset the narrower format, which he did, by adding the space to allow the link to wrap.

Useful to know for posting any really long links in the future -- need to force a break (add a space) to avoid messing up the page format like I did....

Buddy, I'll chomp down, too, along with Lynn -- more info, please, on any other recourse options! -- since all the Transworld/Random House twits I've contacted have been totally ineffectual!

If I'd known in advance, I would have posted this, but I just happened to stumble across an intense program last night on "CNN Presents" -- "Captured: Inside the Army's Secret School" -- the training of US Spec Forces in SERE [survival, evasion, resistance, escape].

As of right now, the link -- http://www.cnn.com/CNN/Programs/presents/ --
still shows galleries and interactive info for this program along with the Su, 9/3/03 broadcast times. Don't know if the program will be rebroadcast and/or how long this link will last tho' since it doesn't specify the exact program. Plus, I don't know how CNN broadcasts work where you all live....(another US impairment thingie, sorry!)...but you might want to look for it. Very "Immediate Action"....

You learn something new every day!!!

No wonder it's confusing when one remembers a title from yesteryear and the author's name eludes the mind. Worse, when one tracks down the book but the story line ain't as remembered. The following explains same titles different authors...Whacky if you ask me - I wouldn't want a book I'd slogged over as a writer and the publisher didn' make sure it was the only one (unique) in bookstores.

Subject: RE: (Dark Winter - Warner Books - softback 2002)

Whoops! We didn't know about that one. Sounds great, though. When was it published?

Published by Warner Books December 2002 in paperback; 0446611972; 464 pages - hardback publishing date not available on quick search!!!!

I'm not worried about the clash - McNab's is quite different. And there's never been copyright in titles. We're thinking of calling his next one Pride and Prejudice... Love, love it: he very definitely has enough of the latter elements to fill several bergens, and enough cling-film no doubt to metaphorically dispose of RSM Peter Ratcliffe...I should have signed off as:

ex SAS/SIS widow/author/book reviewer/fan of Andy McNab.

Bets wishes, /likewise (I've tried to hate you because you rejected my novel, but so long as you do your best for AM I'll let you off...And you won't mind if I use Last Light as my next title - kudos steal, as if...)

Subject: Does *title copyright* no longer exist? (Dark Winter)

Upcoming Oct 03 book: "Dark Winter by Andy McNab" as mentioned during online chat for World Book Day Festival.

"Dark Winter by William Dietrich" already exists. Available at good bookstores and online at Powells etc.

It's a brilliant thriller...Twenty-six rugged adventurers unknowingly isolate themselves with a psychopath in the Antarctic wilderness. As the body count rises, the temperatures drop and the group must stop the killer before their chance of survival disappears into the arctic darkness. Geologist Jed Lewis has joined them at the Amundsen-Scott research base in the South Pole. Each winter, the base is totally shut off from the outside world: no one can enter or leave. As soon as Jed arrives, murders start occurring, and soon, 10 of the 26 staffers are dead. Everyone suspects Jed, but maybe he's innocent. He does have a secret, though, one that might have a sinister connection to the horrible events unfolding at the base.

There was a film, too, very similar: if not based on the book...

Does *title copyright* no longer exist?

many regards

What´s the problem? There are many books with the same title. I´ve never heard of a title-copyright.

>>By Swedish reader   (Tuesday, 11 Mar 2003 18:26)

Swedish reader

You're right, there isn't a title copyright, but may be there should be...Simply because, if a few years down the line from reading a brilliant book, and a friend of yours happens to mention a specific title as a possible next purchase, and yes you remember the title (as we often do) but not who wrote it, (as we often don't) you could end up recommending an entirely different book to the one your friend was talking about!!!

Another way of looking at same subject matter:
OK, so you're unlikely to forget a book by Andy McNab, but your friend might well have seen an advert for a new book (same title as one of Andy's) only he/she can't remember what the author 's name was on the book cover. Naturally you would recommend any Andy book, right? And again your friend would end up buying the wrong book, a good book nonetheless, but not the one he/she saw advertised....

Sounds silly, but b****y annoying if you then discover you have to go spend money on the book you wanted in the first place, the book you saw on the advert but haven't got in your hand....

It happens!!!

re offboard, Am-I-Binned...

I don't think of the Lucas/Beaumont interaction as either private or business, so its appearance here won't exactly amount to sensational news on any international scale...

It would take a Vindaloo on Dark Winter scale to get Maz (News of the World)interested...

Maz is such a cool dude: sounds public school educated - via a mobile phone - no wonder his sting op on the Duchess of ((((what's-her-name))) oh yeah, Wessex, was so successful...Fancy her not knowing a fake sheikh: the champagne he was drinking a dead giveaway...

I feel sure Andy wouldn't slip up on quite such an obvious banana!!!

Am-I-binned: you're just not eating the right breakfast cereal: oats!!

High energy, low fat, porridge made with water, tbl spoon of honey or golden syrup (maple syrup)...Quite nice the Scottish way, too - served with salt...

Actually, royal ref should have read Earl & Countess of Wessex. Sorry, Queen, (in case you're a fan of AM) I inadvertantly upgraded the aboves' royal status...

The sting op (by the News of the World) on the countess was a classic funny, highlighting how gullible members of the royal household can be.I mean, who wouldn't be suspicious of a sheikh drinking alcohol !!!!!!!!!... If interested, I'll give you a run down offboard...I guessed Paul would know about it - the Oz Prime Minister a Republican, and most Europeans familiar with Brit Royal gossip/disasters...No one is safe from ridicule by journos at the NOTW, not even those who have written articles for them...

Morning, All!

I'm very glad you understood me -- you have no idea how hard I work to be able to be so articulate! (big grin, wink)

Feeling much better now that I've chowed down! Fanx, Buddy!

Don't know tho' if it's your recipe or the fact that you replied in plain-speak, but at least I know what you're talking about now! I did do a little homework after posting so I did manage to translate the gee gees without any cereal!

So very hard to keep up with all those international going-ons and intrigues, especially considering that I live in the only "important" country -- well, at least that's what our press, media, etc. seem to think! Not fair that Paul would know and I wouldn't. Australia (for all its UKness) is way further away that I am! Grrrrrrrrrrrr!

Ooooh, Lynn! You are so sharp! Yes, I thought a lot about the FC connection -- it's related to an issue I've been considering even back to B20. Andy has very interesting uses of past tense for some of these things. When everybody is pretty much caught up on all his books, maybe we could speculate (nicely) about such things.

Yes, Ratcliffe's book ("Eye of the Storm") was published in UK in paperback in May 2001 so maybe in hardback the year before. Ironically, you should see how many "Eye of the Storm" books there are, both fic and non-fic, by various authors. Even one called "In the Eye of the Storm" about Gen. Schwarzkopf....

Think some of the errors in the transcript are the result of the transcribers not knowing anything about the subject; maybe we should volunteer to review for typos -- there are several throughout. Interesting things, too -- like Mal recalling "Mac" using the compass after the patrol split....

Think I'll go nuke up my leftover breakfast now (made a double-batch just in case) and recharge my little synaptic connections!

'til sooner....

Sa, 15/3/03 (8:15am) US

It's a little quiet here with everybody busy and/or away -- so I thought I'd fill the gap with a little grin:

A large group of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they hear a voice call from behind a sand-dune. "One SAS soldier
is better than ten Taliban."

The Taliban commander quickly sends 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun battle breaks and continues for a few minutes, then silence.

The voice then calls out "One SAS soldier is better than fifty Taliban."

Furious, the Taliban commander sends his next best 50 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gunfight commences. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence.

The voice calls out again "One SAS soldier is better than one hundred Taliban."

The enraged Taliban Commander musters one hundred of his best fighters and sends then across the dune. Gunfire, grenades, machine gun fire, rockets, etc. ring out as a huge battle is fought.

Then silence!

Eventually one wounded Taliban fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying words tells his Taliban Commander, "Don't send anymore men, it's a trap. There's two of them!"

Hope you're all grinning (I just so hate to grin alone!)....

E-chatter again soon!

BEHIND IRAQI LINES
Weeks before the 1991 Gulf war officially began, an 8-man British SAS (Special Air Service) team was secretly inserted behind Iraqi lines. The top-secret mission of "Bravo Two Zero"--find and destroy Scud missiles being fired into Israel. But something went spectacularly wrong. After discovery, some men were captured, tortured, and killed while others tried to escape by trekking across 200 miles of desert. Only five returned.
