Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. ~Author Unknown

For those who celebrate a merry christmas, all of you a happy New Year. Suggestion for 2005:
Only war at Christmas, peace in the rest of the year ;-)

Take care all :-)

Following F-troop's story, many members have fleed and poofed themselves.
Maybe they just get bored with it, or could there be another reason.

If this is an Andy Mcnab's book discussion group all critics should be allowed, good and bad. Maybe the attitude of some florkers here has made other people move away...

Re: doldrums vs maelstroms

To me, it seems the overall activity level here depends far more on the cyclical demands of our personal lives than it does on any controversies, constructive or contrived. Fight or flight, however, is fundamentally a personal choice since all departures, including poofings, are self-determined or self-inflicted.

That said.... I'm departing for the moment to do some post-Christmas rippin'-n-runnin' errands... ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Tuesday, 28 Dec 2004 16:26)

Looks like the only one in here who's had a white christmas, is me. :-)

"Merry New Year!"

>>By ortlieb   (Wednesday, 29 Dec 2004 01:04)

Hey !! It was promised to us, .. it .. erm .. it .. just never arrived.
Then again, it was a man doing the weather forecast. Hehehehehe.

Some other AM fans had a white world before Xmas too. I do recall one moaning about cleaning the drive way so my guess is you were not the only one Ortlieb!

Take care on the pyro stuff and hope to see all back safe and sound in 2005!!

very dissapointed with deep black . i hope this isnt the way andy`s books are going.
what are everyones thoughts on chris ryans the watchman ?

>>By george599   (Saturday, 1 Jan 2005 20:11)

I enjoyed Deep Black (yes finished! thanx to holidays) but when it comes to giving a review, I've still got a Dark-Winter-Discussion trauma.. so I'll pass for now.

For those who've read it a question though:

I'm a bit confused - is DB more cruel than the others? Basically they are all cruel, it comes with the genre - but maybe now since there was a lot of cruelty described towards women that I can relate more?
I was 'shocked' in Dark Winter but somehow the deaths in the other books seem more 'criminal' where in DB it's plain cruel. Or is it just me who feels that way?

Hi George, pity you were disappointed. For Chris Ryans books you may want to check his board here at Gnooks:

>>By Lynn   (Saturday, 1 Jan 2005 20:35)

Shock & Awe lynn, that's where Mcnabber is headed and Yanks didn't come out of DB smelling of roses neither. Think nabby got his Bosnians and Serbs on the wrong teams but that's just my opinion. Shit like heads for footballs was once a muslim sport in Afghanistan and pre Yugoslavia so reckon it were a bit of historical based tit for tat.

>>By poolesprocket   (Sunday, 2 Jan 2005 10:31)

Mmm, I suppose you'll find this cruelty on many war fields.
I shocked myself with my former post though and feel to explain that me enjoying DB and the cruel scenes in the book are not related,
but now I'm even more confused, sigh.
Non-fiction can be interesting, educational, entertaining. When it comes to fiction it's mainly entertainment??? When the non-fiction mixes with fiction - and it's about shocking (non-fiction) details can you describe the book as entertainment? Maybe it should be called semi-fiction. Maybe I just think too much of it, like I said, confusion rules.

>>By f-trooper bri   (Monday, 3 Jan 2005 20:21)

I think this synopsis was posted already, but I don't recall reading the last part before! And, helz belz, it's a new year, what the heck?

Boy Soldier
Andy McNab, Robert Rigby
(release date May 5, 2005)

"Danny Watts's grandfather, Fergus, was a traitor. One of the worst sort. An SAS explosives expert who betrayed his country and his regiment for money. Drug money. He was arrested and left to rot and die in a Columbian jail. At least, that's what seventeen year-old Danny is told when his hopes of becoming a soldier are destroyed for ever. But he knows something the army doesn't seem to know. Fergus Watts is alive and in the UK, living in secret under an assumed name - but where? Fergus is Danny's only living relative. Burning with fury and desire for revenge, Danny sets out to track down his grandfather and expose him. In doing so he sets in train an explosive sequence of events which throw Danny and Fergus together on the run from the people who want Fergus, and now Danny, dead. Packed with breathtaking action, SAS procedures, surveillance and survival techniques, this is a fast-moving, action-packed thriller for teenagers. There will be several books in the BOY SOLDIER sequence.

TV rights have been sold to Zenith, makers of Inspector Morse, Hamish McBeth and Byker Grove."

Woo-hoo! A new casting call -- seeing as we've explored Crisis Four's possibilities to death already....

[[ "...he sets in train..." -- sheesh, it's like those Brits have a different word for everything! ;oP ]]

After watching the real bravo two zero last night on channel four and having read mike coburns book, and having re read bravo two zero and the one that got away, i'm having great doubts in said literary works....

>>By f-trooper bri   (Tuesday, 4 Jan 2005 19:03)

I finally got to see 'The Real Bravo Two Zero' as well Bri (recorded as it was on at 2:35am!) but I was not as convinced. Having read the book first, I thought the conclusions reached by Asher came over as lame and were only there to justify the fee he received from the TV people. Given that he spoke to the 'witnesses' in Arabic, we cannot be sure that he was interpreting what they said accurately or in good faith. For example, he was presumably paying them in some way, so the Arabs, pragmatists that they are, were bound to give the version of events they thought he wanted to hear. Also, since when have genuine Bedou lived in brick built houses? I also think that Asher's view was tainted by his clear need to exonerate Vince Phillips, having first met the man's family and clearly sympathised with their views. All in all I think it's fair to conclude that we will never really know.

>>By camban   (Wednesday, 5 Jan 2005 12:20)

How do you justify mcnab's publisher fee/s for B20. He shat on Vince Philips family with promises that didn't materialise. He shat on his superior officers. Some soldier boys never get over not making it past sergeant and always envy the few lucky in their number selected to officer training. not surprising Asher sympathised with Vince's family because Vince were twice the man mcnab will ever be.

Ahh Pooly...still can't get enough of Gnooks even though there's such a lovelier place around according to your profile.
Let me do you a favour by answering so Spike won't have to take back his words "Maybe the attitude of some florkers here has made other people move away..." (Ooops, you are still here though)

On the other hand... you've been around long enough to know my answer and those of some other oldies around here so why not let the newbies answer this one......

Oh, to anyone who thinks I'm a bitch with this answer...I probably am.
Must be the time of the month again. Or maybe it's permanent.

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 5 Jan 2005 19:09)

Thanx Pooly, that was wonderful again :-)

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 5 Jan 2005 19:17)

Did Asher give all the profits from his book away?

>>By bookyhelen   (Wednesday, 5 Jan 2005 20:16)

Re Poolesprockets' earlier post.

I'm not convinced any "justification" for AMs' "publisher fee"
(by which I presume you mean publishing advance?) is really necessary in this context. It is surely a purely commercial decision based on the publishing houses' estimation of AMs' potential copyright earnings, and from McNabs' perspective how well their offer compared to the terms other publishers were offering to acquire his publishing rights at that time? To the extent that any "justification" were to be required surely the justification would be the publisher offered it (and I suspect they have done reasonably well themselves from the arrangement)?

May I suggest you are presumably at liberty to write a book yourself if you choose. I won't be attacking you for accepting whatever terms are offered to you in that circumstance, nor expecting you to donate your earnings to any third party that you've publicly attacked (or bored).....
