I must say I was very surprised, shocked even, to see a clear photo of Andy Mcnab on it though. Is he now showing his identity freely then? If he is fair play to you and it's a good site. If he isn't why would 'fans' post a picture of him unless they meant him harm?
>>By bookyhelen (Sunday, 19 Dec 2004 21:24)
The one picture of him signing the books, is take in such a way we still can't see him. The picture was taken with permission to be spread amongst us , F-Troop nutters. Of course we mean no harm to him, after all that would stop the books from coming !! ;-)
Welcome btw
>>By Ninjawoman (Sunday, 19 Dec 2004 23:01)
Hi Ninjawoman Of course if he truly is totally happy about that particular picture being on the worldwide web there is no problem. I doubt it though somehow. I disagree that it's taken in such a way that we can't see him. We now know pretty much what his face looks like from that photo. If you are unsure, perhaps now that you fans have your copies for your personal enjoyment you might consider taking it off the site. Better safe than sorry don't you think? Happy Christmas all!

Almost Christmas again - and we're still here?? Sigh, if only we didnt enjoy it so much ;-)) Welcome bookyhelen, nice to hear you're concerned but also like the site. In this particular case I don't share your concern because this picture is no different, really, from other pictures you can find on the Net. Have good days :-)

This is a story that moved me and that I would like to share. I try to stay clear of politics as much as I can on this board, but if you'd just forget about nationalities and country, it just a human story - and if we still have children who care about life...there may be some hope for peaceful times ;-)
from a Marine Gunnery Sergeant in Iraq.
Just wanted to write to you and tell you another story about an experience we had over here.
As you know, I asked for toys for the Iraqi children over here and several people (Americans that support us) sent them over by the box. On each patrol we take through the city, we take as many toys as will fit in our pockets and hand them out as we can. The kids take the toys and run to show them off as if they were worth a million bucks. We are as friendly as we can be to everyone we see, but especially so with the kids. Most of them don't have any idea what is going on and are completely innocent in all of this.
On one such patrol, our lead security vehicle stopped in the middle of the street. This is not normal and is very unsafe, so the following vehicles began to inquire over the radio. The lead vehicle reported a little girl sitting in the road and said she just would not budge. The command vehicle told the lead to simply go around her and to be kind as they did. The street was wide enough to allow this maneuver and so they waved to her as they drove around.
As the vehicles went around her, I soon saw her sitting there and in her arms she was clutching a little bear that we had handed her a few patrols back. Feeling an immediate connection to the girl, I radioed that we were going to stop. The rest of the convoy paused and I got out the make sure she was OK. The little girl looked scared and concerned, but there was a warmth in her eyes toward me. As I knelt down to talk to her, she moved over and pointed to a mine in the road.
Immediately a cordon was set as the Marine convoy assumed a defensive posture around the site. The mine was destroyed in place.
It was the heart of an American that sent that toy. It was the heart of an American that gave that toy to that little girl. It was the heart of an American that protected that convoy from that mine. Sure, she was a little Iraqi girl and she had no knowledge of purple mountain's majesty or fruited plains. It was a heart of acceptance, of tolerance, of peace and grace, even through the inconveniences of conflict that saved that convoy from hitting that mine. Those attributes are what keep Americans hearts beating. She may have no affiliation at all with the United States, but she knows what it is to be brave and if we can continue to support her and her new government, she will know what it is to be free. Isn't that what Americans are, the free and the brave?
If you sent over a toy or a Marine (US Service member) you took part in this. You are a reason that Iraq has to believe in a better future. Thank you so much for supporting us and for supporting our cause over here. Semper Fi, Mark

Hello Lynn I'm sorry you don't share my concern about the picture that shows Andy's face. The man tries hard to juggle a literary career whilst keeping his face out of the public domain for reasons of his personal safety does he not? Sometimes images will get through and onto the net that compromise his security. I would have thought his fans would understand more than most how real the threat is and would go a little bit further than most to protect him. Talk about people wanting a piece of him, you discuss the man incessently but surely keeping his identity secret as he himself desires is a thoughtful act that you could afford him? I will say no more on that but leave you to contemplate it further.
That telling story of the little Iraqi girl and the Teddy bear merely indicates to me once more the arrogance of the American.
" It was the heart of an American that protected that convoy from that mine."
Actually it was the heart of the little Iraqi girl that prompted her to point the mine out. Iraqis had hearts of acceptance, of tolerance, of peace and grace long before the US of A was even thought of. To illegally invade another nation, kill thousands of its civilians then call the devastation "inconveniences of conflict"? Crap story. Happy Christmas Helen

Like I said Helen, I don't care to discuss politics or nationalities here -I was reading the human factor through the lines. And if you don't mind..about the picture I'd like to agree to disagree. :-)

with reference to the photo, i think mcnab doesn't want fans and sas wannabes bothering him, if the bad guys wanted his details they would get them have no doubt about that. well look there are photos about that show him clearly.
>>By fony (Monday, 20 Dec 2004 12:58)
It is a nice story and as always maybe the american thing is over done, but it's idoctrinated into americans from birth and therefore are very patriotic and seem to believe they are protectors of the world so to speak. As i'm british i have a certain amount of jealousy towards that loyalty and patriotism, as britain lacks it. And helen maybe you look at the big icture and not what the press puts in front of you, as we are at war and will get hit soon, so if we can kill as many of our enemys as we can and give them the option for democracy then why not? you will also find the iraqi people are very pro coalition and most of the people that are attacking coalition troops are not even iraqi but on some stupid call for jihad.
well rant over have a happy christmas all
>>By fony (Monday, 20 Dec 2004 13:08)
I actually think f troop should declare war on typoman because he really likes to attack me.
>>By fony (Monday, 20 Dec 2004 13:10)
In brief :
I think British people on the whole are quite patriotic but, like many other aspects of life, show it in a more reserved manner than that of the USA.
One example of the difference and our reserved nature is the obvious sight in Iraq, on frequent occasions, when I have been on street duty with colleagues. Working with experience from our NI days, basic standard procedure is to patrol in an inconspicuous manner, alert at all times and never moving far from the vicinity of buildings - all this done trying to look relaxed and not fear/worry-provoking. Many US soldiers undertaking the same exercises are commonly seen walking in the middle of the street, happily chatting to each other, wearing issue-shades, spitting on the ground and adopting a somewhat alternative venture regarding their issued dress-code. It's obviously not every US soldier but factually many are like that. If that was a British soldier he'd be crucified on the spot for not being professional in all things in his way.
The overwhelming population of Iraq want the US and British soldiers to remain until the main problems are sorted out.
The main problems are not caused by the general Iraqi people but by minority terrorist faction groups. If the US/UK were to pull out (in an ideal world - a great idea), all these tunnel-visioned anti-war protestors in the west would be happy. However, the fact of the matter and also according to the terrorist factions themselves, nothing will change. They would still initiate further bombings etc but this time concentrate even further on the unprotected Iraqi citizen. This would be totally unacceptable, for me and for all my colleagues who have made such good friends with a number of Iraqi people. We are here for the Iraqi people and what fanatical anti-war protestors want is irrelevent to me and the Iraqi people. I've mentioned before, many Iraqi people have been asked who they hate the most and a very frequent answer has been....western anti-war protestors. It's not me saying this but factually the Iraqi people. Anti-war protestors should try and visit Iraq and speak to it's people in the real world rather than just formulate opinions based on not a single bit of factual experience in Iraq.
Whether the conflict in Iraq was "illegal" is just down to personal opinion. All anti-war protestors think it is illegal. However, myself and most of the British Army do not think it is illegal but more to the point, the Iraqi people do not think it is illegal. So here's one for you all...........with the war in Iraq, who do you think it affects the most ?
a) Anti-war protestors.
b) Iraqi citizens.
I think we all agree that anti-war protestors are irrelevent in this issue as they are not the ones in Iraq living with hostilities. If the Iraqi people do not think that the conflict is illegal then there is something quite amiss.
Just a few sentiments I wanted to add with no ill-feeling intended. Bearing in mind that though one may say just my opinion, though true, are opinions based on factual experience with me being there for a very long time.
Kindest regards to all,
Reg
>>By Reginald (Monday, 20 Dec 2004 20:08)
Good post reg, and very well put, i tend to be rubbish at putting things into words but you hit the nail on the head. I haven't been back to iraq since telic, but most of the people seemed very happy to have us there although slightly apprehensive as we did screw them over in the earlier conflict.
I agree with you on the reserved patriotism, but i think britain has lost a lot of it's pride and due to the whole political correctness thing, it's become a undesirable thing to show your pride, although it's more of an authourity thing, for instance no union jacks or st george crosses to be displayed in case you hurt someones feelings (go figure). I think we just have lost the plot completely in this country and the final nail in the coffin was banning father christmas from shopping centres in case it hurt the feelings of another religion, yet they can still perform what ever festivity they celebrate. So that is more my point on the patriotism side, if a person emigrates to america and gets citizenship, then they become american through and through, they beleive in the constitution and the whole shibang.

Wow, great posts by Reg and fony. Thanks guys, good insight. Nice to meet you, bookyhelen. As I'm the "guilty party" here as regards McNab's pic, I'd like to say I appreciate your concern for his personal privacy--something all of us here share. The picture in question (there's two pics of McNab on my website, I assume you're talking about the one that shows his eyes), has been heavily altered by yours truly. I would never do anything to compromise McNab's privacy or security, and I can assure you that the picture I use does neither. Anyone who's met McNab can back me up on that. Thanks again for your concern and feedback.

Hey guys hows things? i see the chatter isnt working. Dont mention Deep Black, i am reading DW again beforehand just so i get the sense of continuity tip top!
>>By Ignaty (Tuesday, 21 Dec 2004 13:48)
Hey Ftroop,
I'll get my happy holidays and best wishes for the New Year in early since I'm leaving town today and *gasp* MIGHT not have internet access!!!! My chances for a white Christmas are pretty slim, unless you count blinding sun and warm sand "white". (pssst... Lynn, weather permitting, I may arrange another windsurfing lesson and finally discover the terrible secret behind my man Cody's missing fingers!!! hahahaha ;-)
Just finished Dark Winter and loved it. Saving Deep Black for the next two weeks by the beach. Reading The Kremlin Device in the interim and gotta say I'm impressed. It's much better than CR's first two and easily holding my interest. Way to go Chris!
Finally, thanks Reg and fony for your posts. I feel like crap whenever I get accosted by antiwar protesters on campus these days. It's nice to hear back from people who have actually been there instead of just heard about it on the news.
Take care all, Majorette

A VERY MERRY almost-CHRISTMAS, ALL!
And HAPPY BIRTH-MONTH, ANDY! (pssst... if anyone asks, remember to say 45... vbw!)
Thank you, Lynn.... ... and thank you, Marine Gunnery Sergeant Mark.... :o)
LOL and fanx, Fony and Reginald! You have us Yanks dead to rights! Yepper, Flags and Brags 'R Us! One of the things I enjoy best about AM is when he compares the Brits and Yanks because, along with the way he accurately captures our mindset, he also conveys an abiding affection, respect, and friendly familiarity to laugh about the differences... which is what I sense from both of you, too. Hoo-yah! :o)
Welcome, Bookyhelen... Your concerns about AM's photo put you completely in step with F Troop's attitude/philosophy/credo. The picture in question, however, as Just Jon points out, has been deliberately obscured. Truth is, the original version of that picture was published as part of an interview with AM, making it is safe to assume it had AM's full approval. And given that AM is aware of Grey Man's Land, it's probably safe to assume that he recognizes and appreciates that Jon opted to obscure that picture even more. Dammit, Majorette! Me being envious is hardly an appropriate expression of the Christmas Spirit!
White Christmas, Ninj? How 'bout we look into renting snowmaking equipment from the ski resorts? It's certainly cold enough!
Don't worry, Ignaty.... A few of us are still in the process reading/finishing Deep Black. In my case, it's not for lack of interest or desire, just pressing priorities! (Good God, wait a minute! What can be more pressing than AM?!? I've got to get my priorities sorted out!!!)
Ooooh, BABES.... A Christmas Carol, SAS-style, perhaps? ;o)
Side-note sitrep: Speaking of priorities, as some of you already know, I'm still in denial about my PC being declared clinically brain-dead, meaning bye-bye personal address books, etc. (Yes, I know back-up drills are SOP, but I was lazy; I have no excuse!) Luckily, Just Jon had come up for the DC RV (see greymansland.com) so he performed an emergency brain transplant (no, not me! on my pc, and, yes, I know I could use one, too! Smart arses!) So, thanks muchly, Dr. JJ, especially for not rolling your eyes -- well, not too much anyway -- when I cried at the prognosis!

Paging Doctor Jon ???? Lmao !!
Oh AIB you know I can hear the sound of money rolling in my pockets ( and through the holes in that straight to the crediters) Hmm How about we split the buzzzzzznuzzzz, you do the rental of the equipment, I will rent out the snow shoveling people ( paging DTO ;-) )
Despite the weather people telling us, snow was coming .. it is still coming i supose, not a flake in sight !!!!! If there are people who have to much snow, send it my way please ?? It is cold enough, just not sugar coated enough. Oh well maybe we can go skating soon.
Happy holidays

You need to use a little imagination with this one it’s a tad inaccurate in places and spot the rubbish lines…. Last day in work, well I couldn’t let you down AIB ha ha.
“On the twelfth day of Christmas B20 sent to me……. Twelve boots for creeping Eleven eyes for glancing Ten officers griping Nine soldiers gunning Eight 66’s for striking Seven maps for skimming (quickly!!) Six authors lying (allegedly!!!) Five gold sovereigns Four cling-filmed turds Three caught men Two khaki gloves and A jerry can for a wee.”
Happy holidays – Beth.

Happy holidays to u all (and AM)

LOL @ Beth! Now that's my kind of Christmas carol. Very well done. Thank you for the holiday cheer, Elendar--it's great to know you, too. Now I've gotta put out the Christmas claymores, "front towards Santa." I've got a score to settle going back to that lump of coal I got in '86.
>>By Just Jon (Wednesday, 22 Dec 2004 23:55)
Happy Christmas guys : ) By the way..I think that being anti war is always a good thing. War should be a lst bresort as it only serves the men behind the scenes that make loads of money from it at the price of men, women and children, communities and soldiers on both sides. The cynical and illegal invasion of Iraq and the subsequent deaths of thousands of iraqi civilians and coalition troops is plain wrong and I will never believe it should have happened. Many servicemen I know also think the whole thing stinks..it's not just anti war protesters! But as my own lover flies to Kuwait and then once more into the thick of things again in the next few days I'm glad I can still speak my mind freely. Still think Andy's pic shouldn't be shown at all (and if he did ok it he's a wally! ) xxxxxxx Happy Christmas f-troop
