The Sunday Times - November 21, 2004

Time & Place: Before the SAS
Running wild with other kids on a rough south London council estate prepared author Andy McNab for a life of soldiering

"From when I was about 10 we were always moving around south London. I think we weren’t paying the rent. It was myself and my younger brother — my older brother had already left home — and my mum and dad. I was fostered by my parents as a baby and adopted by them when I was five, and Eastwell House on the Tabard estate in Bermondsey is the longest I have lived anywhere. Even since leaving the army I have moved six times.
It was one of those post-second world war housing estates that were just really ugly, grimy brown-brick buildings with a landing. We lived on the third floor. We had bars on the windows, and behind the door we had an old wrought-iron gate that would be closed at night so people couldn’t ram in. "

Unfortunatly McNab takes his time with the background checks, the research of places the next book is going to take place so it will be around .. erm .. same time next year. One every year and believe me when I tell you, we all know you pain ;-) So untill then, feel free to join in in our daily grunting and atempt to some serious mind control in making him go and type any faster !! Sofar we don't have that much success but that can change any day soon ! Hope springs enternal , right ?

I just made my husband buy me Deep Black, i got it for £9.95 out of Asda, He knew there was no chance of me leaving the shop without it. Aw what a shame for him hee hee.

>>By becks   (Thursday, 9 Dec 2004 16:59)

Quick note:

For those who haven't read these, I highly recommend them:

1. The Shooting Gallery -- Gaz Hunter
2. Fighting Scared -- Robin Horsfall

The more SAS-books I read, the more annoyed I get, learning about how many moron, career-chasing and arrogant ruperts there are out there....

DLB "Let's send the boys out on a suicide mission" being one of them...

>>By ortlieb   (Thursday, 9 Dec 2004 21:34)

Too right Orty, it is a theme found in all of them I think. Many a promising career soldier has been shafted by these types. It is also a constant theme in the Vietnam biogs. Reviews of the books mentioned are in AMFT database plus many more!

It's like the Python sketch where an RAF officer sends a pilot on a mission saying "what the war needs now is a pointless sacrifice, fly over the briny, take a shufty, don't come back".

>>By camban   (Friday, 10 Dec 2004 11:54)

Well hello there guys and gals !!!!!!!

Just good ol' Reggie here back on line, back for Xmas............and back ache !!!

Been a while but nice to see the regulars of F-troop still going strong and some new blood appearing.

Roll on the 25th, that's all I say. Can't wait for my two beer can ration on the day with the ol' turkey !! Never mind, evenings will soon sort me out down the pub.

Kindest regards,

Reg

There was a documentary on BBC2 this week, part of the Secret History series, it covered the crisis which arose in Aden during the '60s at a time when the Argyle & Sutherland regiment were acting peace keepers. When the locals decided to blow up a Land Rover killing six soldiers, their CO, Colonel 'Mad Mitch' Mitchell effectively declared his own private war on the indiginous population, boy did those guys kick raghead ass! and that was when the cameras were rolling. There would be hell on if it was perpetrated in Iraq these days. However, it transpired that the SAS were sent in to sort things out and allow the Argyles to withdraw. Now, this is one of the missions that has been denied or only hinted at in many of the contemporary biogs; so now we know.

Has anyone got a copy of 'Killing Zone' by Harry McCallion that they want to sell? It is another paras to SAS story that I have recently discovered but is out of print.

>>By camban   (Thursday, 16 Dec 2004 11:57)

Cam, flork me please?

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 16 Dec 2004 12:27)

Dear Camban,

don't think I've had the pleasure, but here's a hello from me.

Have got the Killing Zone somewhere, hiding among my heaps of nick-nacks. Got it because of the Para history. Have read it but that was about seven years ago.

It was printed in 1996 and the publishers are currently undergoing a reprint version, date to be out, I'm not sure.

Foyles bookstore in London do a good selection of military books and do an online mail order service as well. They currently sell copies of Harry's book for £5.99.

Regards,

Reg

Broken record that I am: How about eBay?
Two paperbacks on offer for £0.99 and two hardbacks, one for £2.99 and the other a buy-it-now for £3.50... :o)

Army asks Hoon for 'SAS-lite' unit

December 14, 2004

Senior military officers are battling to persuade the defence secretary, Geoff Hoon, to create a specialist infantry battalion that would provide back-up to the SAS against the worldwide challenge of terrorism.
The absence of such troops providing communications support contributed to the SAS's failure to capture Osama bin Laden in the Tora Bora mountains of Afghanistan two years ago, military analysts have concluded.

The army board, chaired by General Sir Mike Jackson, wants to create a special force - less well trained than the £2m a soldier invested in the SAS and Special Boat Squadron - to fill a gap in the same way the much larger American Delta Force is supported by specialist ranger units. Army chiefs do not regard the estimated £20m cost of training and equipping the special battalion as excessive.

Rangers lead the way!
On an unrelated note, I'm reading Deep Black and wondering, has McNab actually met someone who smelled of margarine? Has he himself smelled of margarine at some point? I've met folks who smelled of booze, cigarettes, garlic, etc...Never margarine.
How many grilled cheese sandwiches do you have to eat to make THAT happen?

>>By Just Jon   (Friday, 17 Dec 2004 03:03)

Thanks Reg & aib, I now have a copy winging its way to me, from ebay!, thanks to the lovely Lynn who wove her magic again!

To obtain an authentic parfum du margarine it is necessary to consume grilled cheese sandwiches at a rate of 15.58 grams per hour for 21 days, honest guv!

>>By camban   (Friday, 17 Dec 2004 11:01)

And you know this though expierence ?? Then again, do I really want to know ????

>>By Ninjawoman   (Friday, 17 Dec 2004 11:26)

Source Wikipedia:

Margarine is a generic term used to indicate any of a wide range of butter substitutes.

Butter is solid but soft at room temperature, and melts easily

Now...Nick Stone solid but soft..at room temperature and easily melting... WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT???

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 17 Dec 2004 15:18)

AN ELITE new unit dubbed The Rangers is to be formed from all branches of the Forces, it emerged yesterday.

The tri-Service regiment will be created from Britain’s toughest troops to act as permanent back-up to the overworked Special Forces, the SAS and SBS.

The main manpower for the Rangers — modelled after the US Army force of the same name — will be taken from 1 Para.

But it will include elements from other Army units, the Royal Marines and RAF Regiment.

The Rangers will have their own cap badge and identity and be located at a new base close to the SAS HQ in Hereford.

I might add, a Ranger just won the U.S. trash-reality show, "The Apprentice."
HOO-YAAH!
And thanks to Cam for the margarine info...I've found through my own research that, in order to smell like beer, one must consume 12+ cans a day...However, to smell like an easily-identifiable BRAND, one must consume 17+ per day.
Gotta go, smelling like Guiness.
