Hi guys, we did really well - but again it was waaaaay too short :o) We've got quite some questions answered. Didn't really understand though what all those non-F Troopers were doing there, who invited them??? (just kidding). I enjoyed it, enjoyed the after party too..sorry I had to leave so soon. We must do that again !
I thought I had saved transcript but I can only find the last part :o( So I guess I have to wait too, to re-read.
Seeya, take care

First time writing, but I have read all of McNabs books. Anyone hear any word on when a new one is coming out? Even us Yanks like his writing and he has quite a big following over here. Caroline do you knoww anything? Donni

I missed my first question can anyone tell me what I asked? I'm really trying to remember if I emailed a sensible one.

I suspect it was a random quote generator -

Bethan....
I kept getting booted out so I missed portions, but here's the first question I have saved from you among the bits and pieces I did get copied:
--------
moderator presents the speaker with question #70 from bethj:
Does Dark Winter mean the end of Nick Stone and you'll start something else?
andymcnab says, "No, not at all, there's another two books on their way..."
andymcnab says, "and then who knows what will happen to him, i have to be careful not to make him too caring and sharing..."
pomplemous enters.
andymcnab says, "because if he goes around hugging trees he wouldn't be able to do the work he does!"
----------
Will try to get all the pieces sorted out later today, but we done good, guys! Really, really good! :o)
Ortlieb had a good idea, too. In the afterchat (afterglow?), several of us were able to chatter real-time in the Chill Out room (phew! I needed that!) and it seems we could meet there whenever we want. I'd be game for looking into there or other places where we could meet for real-time chats sometimes. A show of hands, anyone?
>>By am-i-binned (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 13:18)
AIB : that's fine with me. Just we have to agree on date, hour etc....
Can anyone send me the interview, I didn't save it in time and I can't remember wich questions of mine he answered.
Fanx.

Couldn't have put it any better myself. Todays books are droll. Mcnab books are thrilling but short on text for money. I bought the latest Harry Potter for my n ipper. That is real value for money. 766 pages of kiddy read. Come on Mcnab, you cut and pasted from previous books to pad your lastest effort.
Thanks for heads-up on that, B. Didn't notice that before. Bloody cheat.
>>By Saxon (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 14:29)
I'm waving too, but I was in another hospital when I grabbed the last of webchat and my machine won't let me on the website chat bit. Damn thing I bloody hate it and the worst thing is I can't ask IT because I'm supposed to use it for work. Problem's solved if we do it and i'm at home. Never fear I'll sort something like bin this bloody pc or can anyone offer any useful IT suggestions???
AIB Apparently there was one before that unless bikergirl is winding me up - come on, are you young lady???

Our Regiment heroes are still where we left them...with their (regi)mental pursuers...
CR, Beth and bikergirl are sitting around with a brew on...wondering what to do next...this is no TV Show...there's no direction
The F Troop videophone rings...they take a peek... bg : "Oooooh...a Jimmy Choo...I'm impressed" B : "And it's stood on Andy's cheek..." bikergirl wonders how Beth knows what AM's butt looks like... Then they hear AIB's voice on the phone... AIB : "Beth, bikergirl...this is desperate...Lynn's lost it...she's posting pictures of her and Andy all over the net...much as I'm enjoying looking at him, this has to stop...now. I'm sending in Doctor Sex to help you..." Beth and bikergirl gasp (in anticipation...)
Stan comes storming over the hill... S : "WTF d'you think you're doin'? There's a job to be done here...we've got an ex-Reg hero to extract from Lynn" (!) CR : "Ummm...I'm an ex-Reg hero too..." S : "Sorry mate I didn't see ya there...are the girlies givin' you a hard time?" CR : "No...these are my girls..." Beth and bikergirl are not too sure about that, now they have The Doctor standing in front of them...they may defect (again)...so fickle.. Stan is momentarily thrown...CR's girls?...it's not the intel that AIB gave him.
S : "OK...let's move out and recce the situation" Our four-man team move up to the target location... S : "Beth, bikergirl...be loves and dig us an OP will ya?" Beth and bikergirl don't want to do any work...they work hard enough as it is...but seeing as it's Stan asking...
Stan gets another brew on the go while CR tries to convince him to appear on his next TV show... Beth and bikergirl decide to get on with the mission... Beth creeps froward and peers through a window...she's shocked at what she sees... bg : "Listen up lads...Beth has intel" B : "There's latex and clothes everywhere...the poor man doesn't stand a chance. OK bikergirl, what tictacs are we gonna use?" bg : "I dunno...do they still do the green ones?" S : "Tactics bikergirl!...strategy!..." bikergirl is unaccustomed to these strange concepts so bluffs her way out... bg : "Stan and me'll go round the back...I want covert entry through the back door" (and that's not something I usually say in public...) S : "Roger that (!)" bg : "Beth and Chris...you're through the front door and straight to the bedroom" CR nudges Beth..."I know what I'm doing babe" <wink>
Our assault team rushes the house clearing rooms as they go... In their usual competent style, the team get completely split up... Beth and bikergirl find a very tied-up and embarrassed AM in the kitchen B : "Relax Mr McNab...we'd like you to come with us and do a webchat on the This-Is-F-Troop website" AM : "Outrageous...I just did a chat the other day and your lot asked loadsa questions...how much intel d'you need on me?" bg : "Mr McNab...we need to ask you the questions that never got asked...the Really Important ones..." B : "OK...let's move out" Beth and bikergirl prepare to exit the building AM : "Ummmm...help...what about me?" bg : "Blimey Beth...we nearly screwed up again" B : "Too right bikergirl...AIB would've binned us for leaving AM behind..." Beth and bikergirl untie AM and escort him away...
But what of Lynn and the remainder of the assault team? In the bedroom (as predicted)... CR : "Hold it! Stop right there! I'm armed..." L : "Ooooh you're right...and very nice arms they are too!" CR : "Thanks gorgeous! I still work out you know. Do you come here often?" S : "Oi! Stop chatting up the suspect" Lynn gasps as The Doctor enters the room..."I knew you'd meet me here. I've had McNab in the kitchen...I mean I have him in the kitchen. We can fulfil our evil plan..." S : "Good work babe...let's neutralise Ryan" Stan rushes CR and he is duly latexed (with Lynn's expert guidance). Then they bomb burst into the kitchen...it's empty... S : "Never mind doll...let's make a night of it...Guinness and chips OK?" Lynn's not bothered...she's got her man... Stan leads Lynn out to his red Escort and they disappear into town.
Does Stan know what he's letting himself in for? Will anyone rescue CR? What are the Really Important questions?
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the F-Team (cue music..)

I havent read Liberation day and dark winter yet.

>>By Lynn (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 15:07)
Just had a giggle: ( AIB doesnt have full transcript either, but she did have this part :)
moderator presents the speaker with question #33 from lynnholland: Andy, in your last two novels you didn't work alone, first Muslims (loved Hubba Hubba and Lotfi!) and now in Dark Winter a woman. Very 'political correct', or did you have other reasons? Lynn
andymcnab says, "I thought that certainly Stone working with Arabs is important, to show that they're not bad guys..." "and basically in reference to women, special forces and people like Stone work with people all the time so it just seemed perfectly natural to do..." "When Stone works with women, I never mention sex because I think I'd be terrible at writing a sex scene!"
I wonder where that last part came from - I feel it should have been "I think I'd be terrible at writing a sex scene, I don't have B.A.B.E.S. - Qualities "
LOL - sorry, couldn't resist.. :o)

AIB, I am absolutely on board for a chat! Of course, being 7 (or is it 8?) time zones away from the UK contingent may mean that I'm chatting when I should be sleeping, but I'm willing to make the sacrifice!
Hi Donni. AM has a new book out in the UK (just hit the street a few weeks ago) called Dark Winter. You can order it in hardcover from Amazon UK right now (shipping to our side of the pond is not as bad as you might think), or you can wait until its published in the US, which is usually about 6 months later.
AM's popularity (or lack thereof) in the US was a topic of (brief) conversation a few pages ago. I still can't figure out why his US publisher doesn't market him more aggressively. Since Tom Clancy is in serious decline lately, there's (IMHO) a big underserved market out there, ripe for introduction to AM.

Here goes boring ol' military ortlieb on again:
As F-troop is constantly growing (we've got quite a few volunteers now), why not upgrade our status to F-squadron? As some of you probably know, there is no F squadron in the Regiment, so perhaps the link comes natural? (they've got A, B, D, G and R. C squadron was the old Rhodesian contingent during the Borneo (or was it the Malayan) conflict...)
Just a thought.......
>>By ortlieb (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 17:35)
Orty,... good idea! Yeah I like that F squadron! Sounds very important too, and we're better than A,B,D,G and T. What's the G - one, and isn't T - the territorial one?
OOOOh BABES, you got me laughing there, This is getting worse and more interesting. Nice one putting Stan in too (I wonder if ex-SAS ever read all this stuff), you could put Dinger in too and Mike the Kiwi. And hey what about me......I've got the "whip in the hand -look" now!
Question to AM, now why would he be terrible in writting the sex scene, would he be too embarrased, or maybe he isn't good enough, gigle gigle, he could always ask the help of Dr. Sex.......
>>By borisette (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 18:17)
ooh god 0 points for gramma that's giggle with 2 gggggggeeeessss
>>By borisette (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 18:19)
Borisette "he could always ask the help of .. "
You haven't read John Gray I pressume..??? Men are from Mars (or Moon). Men NEVER ask for help..
>>By Lynn (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 19:40)
Maybe we should just send him *our* suggestions then. Some of us might be really good at such scenes, and AM could decide for himself if he wants to use them. :)
>>By Lethe (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 20:40)
Hey Deusrex,
Your English is very good. Maybe you could translate your own stories into English. Are they as funny as the BABES's?
>>By Lethe (Friday, 21 Nov 2003 20:47)
Buddy send me her complete version of the chat. THANKS !!! Did a count: 11 questions for F Troop, out of 25 total. Not bad !!!!
Think we'll have to ask MG if some of it can be posted, dunno about violations, could be a problem with Thisislondon if we'd post the whole thing.

Saxon: I don't get that service so couldn't read the review or article you were talking about.

I read DW and noticed the "cut and pasted" sections as well. That technique isn't a cheat or a way to "pad" the book. He used them the way many other writers use the technique to flashback previous experiences. Since it isn't AM's style to have Nick "emote" in the books, these scenes don't have a lot of build-up beforehand or let-down afterward. They're just there to let readers know what's going through his head. Also, there will be readers that haven't read Remote Control yet and won't understand what is happening or what Nick is referring to without going over the scenes again and flashbacks are the best way to do that.
It's hard to believe, but there are people who can read a series out of order. :)
>>By Dare (Saturday, 22 Nov 2003 01:10)
I missed the AM chat and was hoping somebody has a transcript....PLEASE?
Thanks!
>>By dirkpitt1972 (Saturday, 22 Nov 2003 04:24)
I disagree with you Dare, the cutting and pasting was a lazy way of putting the book into context. Why not re-write when he discovered the bodies in Nick Stone's thoughts of now not repeat what he wrote five years ago.
Yes people read a series out of order but there are also those that read it in order and do we really want the whole story told yet again. No. For me, the first part of the book was dire (sorry guys but there we are). You could have just cut that out and used the second half and had a cracking book. If the next two books are going to carry on cutting and pasting and repeating themselves over and over then I might leave them alone and leave you guys tell me what happened.
>>By Bethan (Saturday, 22 Nov 2003 08:30)
A stand-alone book is precisely that. Read any old-hand author from the fifties through to the eighties who wrote series style books and you can see they each have their own independent storyline, maybe a vague clue to previous books but nonetheless stood up as one off numbers.
No, what I balked at, same as others, was the continual repeat scenes of his and Suzy busting in to premises. There was little or no atmosphere to say you the reader were entering different pads. As for the repetitive gun technology. A gun is a gun, it kills, do we need a rundown on how the damn thing works. Either it is a high or low short or long distance velocity of being rifle, machine gun, or hand gun. Unless you're a salesman for the armaments industry why all the techy stuff? Your average man in the street (me) dont give a toss about Mcnab's gun expertise, we all know he what he was and don't need telling like we're stupid or something.
>>By Saxon (Saturday, 22 Nov 2003 10:05)
BTW Dare, your "Since it isn't AM's style to have Nick "emote" in the books, these scenes don't have a lot of build-up beforehand or let-down afterward"
Sorry mate, DW was the bloody biggest let down of all. Yes, Mcnab doesn't let Nick "emote" which doesn't say a lot for the writer, does it? No wonder the man can't keep a wife. Who would live with an man who has no emotions, no soul.
