The expression is new to me, but I did a search and you're right. Shiny kit syndrome is used outside the military too.

I was thinking that too. LOL

Shiny Kit Syndrome...
With any large group of people, and especially an insular group (the military is both), conventional morality is thrown out the window and replaced with whatever ethics the group espouses at that particular time. In the military, you have the odd dichotomy of the prison "ill kill you for stealing my toothbrush" mentality coupled with the "they left their stove unattended, let's take it" mentality. Apparently with military folks, it's the ultimate sin to steal from an individual but quite alright to steal from a "group," much like the common shoplifter who feels it's okay to steal from a "corporation" but not from an individual shopper.
I have had a Marine brag to me about stealing from another platoon, whereas he would call for the execution of someone who stole something from another Marine's locker.
Having said that, I should point out that I'm not making a moral judgement here, rather stating the facts as I see them. I have no morals and am too old to want any now.

I'm always cheesed off, but it being Sunday is as good an excuse as any other. :-)

In Bravo Two Zero, McNab writes a little about his service in Northern Ireland. Are any of his books set there?

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Sunday, 17 Oct 2004 19:09)

for queen and country is pretty good, and there are some great books from others who talk about their time there

>>By Xander Cage   (Sunday, 17 Oct 2004 21:19)

For Queen and Country is a great title. Northern Ireland is interesting to me, because I had a friend from there at university. She was Catholic, but despised the IRA.

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 02:08)

Mikey:

AM's "nemesis", Chris Ryan, has written a few books where the setting is Northern Ireland / the IRA. In that respect, I highly recommend The Watchman. Excellent stuff.
Neither McNab or Ryan has had their characters operate in the Balkans (to my knowledge), but if you'd like to read about an SAS-story from the Balkans in 1993, I also recommend All Necessary Measures, by Cameron Spence.

>>By ortlieb   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 04:02)

Thanks for telling me this Ortlieb. I was going to ask about Chris Ryan, because some of the people who post on this board post on that one too. I am interested in the Balkans as well. I'll keep Cameron Spence in mind. I'm interested in international relations in general, and war, unfortunately, is part of that. Just to be clear. I respect the military and the dangerous work that it is forced to do, but it would nice to live in a world in which the military wouldn't be necessary. I don't see that happening any time soon though. That being the case, I may as well learn about the military if I can.

There are many books which deal with all sorts of Northern Ireland issues; read the bleedin' book reviews!!

The shiny kit nicking syndrome is present in all armies. It was particularly rife in Vietnam where they nicked everything up to, and including, large trucks, Jeeps, and Howitzers. There was also a thriving, lucrative black market operating where you could obtain anything in exchange for a captured AK47, pistol, or flag. The flags were actually manufactured for the soldiers in small tailor shops and given a few bullet holes, then sprinkled with chicken blood to increase their value. These items were particularly prized by REMFs to bolster their war credentials.

And by the way, The Increment (CR's latest) begins in the Balkans, and some others deal with this conflict, No Escape Zone for example.

Read the bleedin' book reviews, that's why we write 'em!!

Camban, hon, Mikey doesn't know about where the book reviews are...

Mikey, I've florked you the link to the site where Cam's reviews are...

Hello all *waves*

I'm new here at gnooks.. I'm 19 year old girl, and I live in Denmark... I'm a big Andy Mcnab fan, and I prefer his writing over other military writers in genre. I must confess, that I only recently began to read his books, so I still need to read Bravo Two Zero *hiding from angry people*.

I started reading the Nick Stone Series, and I was hooked. So I decided to read them first. HAs anyone read Dark WInter yet?. I swear to god that the last pages made me cry. Am I the only one?

But, i'm only one book away from Bravo two Zero.
Also i'm rather intriqued by the fact that he's a "mystery" man, because you don't ever gonna see him. I know it's because of security and such.
That's why i'm looking for interviews with him. I know that they are out there, but the ones I found did not work... Do you know where to find them?

I'm sorry if these questions have been asked, but I don't have the time right now to look all the old posts right now, and if you cannot udnerstand my english just shout! :)

Dear Elender,
Well to the greatest bunch of lads and lasses, you will find anywhere, and welcome to F-troop... As a new trooper, you will make some wonderful new friends, who will give you their advice when it comes to whats best to read and whats best to avoid... So welcome fellow f-trooper and i hope you have a enjoyable time making new friends and reading great works...
OK yesterday mail on Sunday reported in a small artice, that the SAS, special air service in now short of men.. Due to a lot of the troopers leaving to become private conatractors and work to work in Iraq for the security companies..
They said in the articel that they are at least 100 men short and that the following months they will be touring army and navy shows to recruit, as always this was denied in the report..
We owe our freedom and safety to our brave lads, and we never should forget that....
From the days of Paddy mayne to Chris Ryan and Andy, the regiment has been keeping us safe... And i hope that they will fill their ranks soon with men who are proud to be badged and wear the winged dagger, for queen and country.
God bless all who serve us and protect us your are loved and honoured by a grateful people.

Does everyone like the new Andy Mcnab paperback books covers, and their xray effect...
Also had a thought why not a nick stone computer game or even a mod. i mean wouldnt it be great to have a game like max payne but you get to be Nick Stone, and you get to not only go through each book but you can change the outcome ...
you get to also have a great fps, and adventure game...
so what you say Andy, for all us Nick Stone fans..

>>By Xander Cage   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 20:38)

Camban admonishes me ever so gently:
> Read the bleedin' book reviews, that's why we write 'em!!

Yes, sir! That sounds like good advice. LOL

am-i-binned is right. I didn't know they were there. Now that I do, I'll look them up.

>>By Mikey_Canuck   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 20:57)

I really like the new covers, simple and good-looking. It is nice to see a change of style. I remember when I found Dark Winter in a local bookstore and I was like: "**** is this an Andy Mcnab book?" (not it was a positive thought :)).

Xander... Thank you, and I can't wait to march out with my fellow F-troopers :D

>>By Elendar   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 21:03)

Hmm... is it just me or do you also think that it is a shame that you can't find any decent website about Andy M. anywhere? I have tried, but I really can't find any. I was thinking, that I would make a website. If I can find the time :/

>>By Elendar   (Monday, 18 Oct 2004 22:17)

Hi Elendar, nice to see you here. Me or someone else will get back to you about the interviews, haven't got the time at the mo but I did want to put this up since we talked about (please NOT) Brad Pitt,
it's from an article in 2001 (hope time knocked some sense into them)

"A NEW action hero is about to give James Bond some explosive competition. Andy McNab, the Gulf War hero-turned-novelist, has signed a million-pound deal to turn his undercover agent Nick Stone into a big-screen star. Brad Pitt is being lined up to play Stone, an ex-SAS freelance operator hired to carry out “deniable operations” for British Intelligence.
(..)
Mark Lucas, McNab’s agent, said: “Nick Stone will be the anti-James Bond. Andy will co-produce the films but we are not insisting on a British actor. Brad Pitt has got the perfect combination of brains and brawn and he is ideal for the role.”

Dear Mr Mark Lucas... please.. from devoted fans.. Brad Pitt is an excellent, good-looking actor and very likely an aimable person but HE IS NOT NICK STONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pfffff.. so good to get that of my chest

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 00:33)

Oh i totally agree with you, Bratt pitt as Nick Stone no way, he's to much of a sap.

>>By becks   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 00:54)

Brad Pitt as Nick Stone?

ugh...... Somebody pass me the Milk of Magnesia

>>By Majorette   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 01:44)

Bloody Hell!! ( sry 'bout that) :O No way that they're going to do that to our "own" Nick Stone... I just need to calm down right now :( He's just too..american to play that role.. And he's probably really expensive.. :P

>>By Elendar   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 02:18)

Ortlieb at the risk of sounding pedantic SQMS stands for Squadron Quartermaster Seargent usually a staff seargent,

TQMS WO2 rank would be Technical Quartermaster Seargent and RQMS would be WO1 rank and he's the Regimental Quartermaster seargent..

okay folks finished yopu can wake up now!!

Hiya becks...whats wrong with Brad Pitt hes a damn fine thesbian did you not see him in 'the game' (I think thats what it was called) with Robert Redford

>>By ToeKnee   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 09:15)

Mikey, sorry about the ignorant outburst old chap, temporarily entered into my RSM alter ego just then, but I'm alright now, nursey upgraded the medication.

ToeKnee, brilliant Profile!! Love it.

>>By camban   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 11:33)

What about Ross Kemp he plays a good hard ba***rd and he's English? Hello toe knee :)

>>By becks   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 13:21)

Toeknee....

The movie you're thinking of is Spy Game.

>>By Majorette   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 14:10)

btw, becks:

Ross Kemp. ooooh, now THAT would be interesting on many levels, considering he's already portrayed an SAS man under the watchful eye of Chris Ryan in the "Ultimate Force" series.

>>By Majorette   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 14:53)

Is theree anything we ( as F-Troop) can do to stop this Brad Pitt things from happening ?
Ok here is my 2 cents,

Dear dear Mister McNab,
As a loyal and devoted reader of Nick Stone adventures, I think I can call myself some what of an expert in the NS department. (now picture me pleeding on the floor, hands folded and eyes watering, cue sobbing ) Why .. oh why Brad Pitt? We, as F-Troop, have been good to you and defended you and your work through thick and thin. Even gave more then one name of capable actors who we think are perfect to become Nick. Not that we feel hurt or anything in you passing our help aside. ( Boo hooo !!!) Ok it is out of my system now, thank you for hearing our/my plea and I am looking forward to the next fruit of your writing labour.
Always yours,
NW
p.s. Andy ?? You can Flork me if you need that list of other actors :-))

>>By Ninjawoman   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 14:59)

Thank you Majorette, the old brain cells arent what they used to be...memory keeps.........er?....er!! oh soddit!!

Becks...Ross Kemp may be english but hes a wet girls party frock!!! and he's a chubber too!! (who ate all the pies, who ate all the pies..etc etc....) now if you want Hard Bast**d try Vinnie Jones (some one may have put forth his name previously, I havent read every page here, if so sorry for being so repetitive...its the beans you know!)

>>By ToeKnee   (Tuesday, 19 Oct 2004 15:03)

Aha Majorette 'the game' was with Michael Douglas and Kara someone (fit as F**k she is!!!) and 'white rabbit' sung by the wonderful Grace Slick!!

that was a cracking film...but alas doesnt spring forth any ideas for NS on celluloid!!
