Re: Training

"A post came up as a training corporal at Winchester and I grabbed it. ... My platoon commander was a lieutenant; under him he had the platoon sergeant and three training corporals. Each of us full screws (corporals) was responsible for between twelve and fifteen recruits. ....

The idea of the training was to keep them under pressure but to make it enjoyable. ... And all the time we were also aiming to create competition, a sense of achievement for their group, building up teamwork. ...

I didn't believe in giving a boy who was slow a hard time because it wouldn't help him at all. All it would do is make him feel worse; if he needed extra training, we had to give it to him. I would encourage other people in that section to make sure they gave him extra training as well. I would tell them, 'He's part of your section; he's as much a responsibility to you as he is to me.' ... If we were sending tossers to the battalion, we'd be in for a hard time.

The bullying that was supposed to be going on in these infantry battalions and training establishments could only have been very isolated incidents. I certainly never saw any of it. If you're doing your job right, you don't need to bully, you don't need to push and shove, punch and kick. What you've got to do is lead by example, show them the skills that they need to know, make it enjoyable, give them incentives--and they'll do it. By the same token, the culture within the army is quite aggressive and close to the bone. There is a need for hard physical work and a hard, physical existence. But that's not bullying. If people can't actually survive that or adapt to it, or simply don't have the aptitude, that's when they should go. As the saying goes, train hard, fight easy; train easy, fight hard--and die.

Within the battalion, if people weren't performing, they'd get decked. I had been filled in a few times, and after a while I always understood the reasons why. As for these daily scenes of regimental baths and scouring with Vim, I never saw it. I never went through any sort of initiation and was never present at one. ... "

what does everyone think of the saying "what happens in the field, stays in the field"?

take care, speak soon

Only because AM didn't hear about or witness any abuse in army training camps himself, doesn't mean it didn't exist...
I have no idea whether it existed or not, but if some soldiers say they were gangraped and abused, then those statements are just as credible as those of AM.

My suggestion for who should play Nick Stone in the potential Crisis Four movie:

Steve Nicolson (the one who played Dinger in the Bravo Two Zero movie).

Why? Because if NS is a projected fictional version of AM himself, then ol' Stevie is the one who resembles him the most (thinking on the top of my head). And he's a native Brit too!

Oh... did I hear the choired faint female murmur "naah... not hot enough!" ?

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 12 Oct 2004 17:00)

I have to agree with ortlieb, Steve Nicolson would be great. I liked him in B20 and also i think he was in Johnny English, he might have to trim down a little though, if not him maybe Jude Law I thought he was good in Enemy at the Gate.

>>By Psicosis   (Tuesday, 12 Oct 2004 21:38)

My vote for Steve aswell .. hehehe the very idea !! Excellent !! Ok and who is going to point this out to The Man ?

>>By Ninjawoman   (Tuesday, 12 Oct 2004 21:47)

MMMmmmmm Nick Stone, who would play Nick Stone in a movie, well i think i can think of only one really good star...Julian Clary....

>>By Xander Cage   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 01:48)

HAHAHA! Now that would be a film worth seeing.

>>By Mickalos   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 02:30)

Uh-oh, Paul R...
Strictly speaking, strict adherence to a policy like that would mean [gasp!] no AM board! Well, sod that! Obviously, I'm gonna have to beast you! ;o)

Errr, Ort...
Steve Nicolson resembles AM? Which AM are you thinking of?!? :o\

Mmm, not sure, Psicosis...
Jude seems too genteel for NS. If NS is gonna be eye candy, may as well go for Colin Farrell. :o)

>> who is going to point this out to The Man ? <<
LOL, Ninj...
Reminds me of Nick's advice: "Hey, Tom, in spyland nobody points."

Hmm, Xander and Mickalos...
Did a quick search for Julian Clary in Google images. Am I safe in assuming Julian is actually Eddie Izzard's love child? ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 05:46)

AIB:

Judging from the photos from the Andy McNab article in Ink Magazine, AM appears to be somewhat pudgy and stockily built (kinda like myself actually).
That's why I figured Steve Nicolson would be a good alternative - as far as physical features are concerned.
Then again -- I'm suspecting you women might've spent more time scrutinising AM's looks than what I have. :-D

Anywhoo.... don't forget that little detail about credibility (ie, being able to actually "act"). Jude Law as an ex SAS squaddie? Too wussy!

Oooh... maybe AM should do it himself?! Then again.... that black bar flying up and down the screen might get a tad annoying after a while...

Hmm... here's another thought: what about Russell Crowe? Get him in shape like he was in Gladiator, and he's ready to do counter-surveillance drills and check chamber like there's no tomorrow!

>>By ortlieb   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 07:28)

LOL, Ortlieb...

How about instead of a blackout bar a decent pair of Ray-Bans or Oaklies?

And... ahem... what's this about "might've"?!? Damn straight I've scrutinize, no might've about it!

As to Russell Crowe, even in finest Gladitor form he's still a bit too bulky for NS, altho he does have a definite advantage over all the other actors proposed so far. Russell has already been expertly trained to portray the ideal ex-SAS (albeit Aussie-style) by none other than Mal (Stan) for the movie Proof of Life.

duh duh duh, did I hear Eddie Izzard???
Eddie Izzard in The Criminal (great UK thriller) with the absolute best (and most under rated) UK actor..my alltime fav Steven Mackintosh??? Steven as Nick... sigh - only in a perfect world.

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 10:12)

Btw.. in The Criminal:
"The luckless Mackintosh is also being chased by a top secret firm of international terrorists, a peepshow owner, the SAS, and Eddie Izzard"
hehe

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 10:17)

what does everyone think of the saying "what happens in the field, stays in the field"?

yep, and we can all be grateful for that when it comes to cow poo.

Paul, on ops - back tomorrow.

No I am not!
(deniable ops)

Ok so no julian Clary... OK how about Doogle from fathet Ted, and sarah could be played by Mrs doyle, and for all the americans who are reading this and dont get it, well lets just say us brits are pissing ourselves laughing at this moment hahaha, because if you new about father ted you'd get the joke sorry guys.

>>By brianauthor   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 12:58)

Oh what about Paul O'Grady aka Lily Savage, or Graham Norton...mmmm ok that might be strecthing it....
On a serious note, as there is a war on i would imagine that any Nick stone novel would be to hot to handle as a film right now..
Though saying that the boys at south park have made a film called team america i saw a bit on the news last night and nearly peed myself laughing..

One of the things people say they like about McNab's writing is that it's very colloquial, like he's telling you the story while sitting in a pub.

I wonder what it would be like to hear McNab read these Gnooks pages aloud while sitting in a pub?

hmmmmm......

AIB-

<<I'll even buy the next two rounds just to hear him read it twice!!!!>>

As you wish!

psssst.. here's an 'int: It changes evry time, so if yer refresh, right, yer might spot an "honest guv" or a "bloody" where it weren't there before! Struth!

>>By Majorette   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 21:21)

Best to play NS? Had anyone mentioned Brad Pitt. Don’t freak, I’m not really a fan of his, but I did like “Fight Club” and what about his accent in “Snatch”. The way the fist fights are described in NS’s novel reminds me of the fights in “Fight Club”. BTW Hollywood would like it.

Also, any US residents, how are you getting just release UK novels? Are you ordering from amazon.uk, or have you found a better way?

>>By BadTime   (Wednesday, 13 Oct 2004 23:33)

uuhhmm.. yes Brad Pitt was mentioned...as in "all but Brad Pitt" .. for the exact reason you mention: Hollywood would like it. Meaning we'd love the movie to be as un-Hollywood as possible ;-)

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 09:06)

Hmmm, BadTime...
I could see the "Fight Club" Brad Pitt as NS but absolutely ONLY the Fight Club BP! As to obtaining UK-released novels, some of us have preordered Deep Black from Amazon UK, but if you watch, you can find Dark Winter (which is STILL not out in the States) listed quite reasonably on eBay.

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 15:16)

Are you all out of your skull?? Brad Pitt ? Yes .. I understand .. the Grey Man .. the first name that pops up is BP !! DUHU !! So not happening. Has any of you lot considderd Sean Bean ? After all he was AM in B20 ( as we all know ) and he was pretty good at that. He can play the Grande man or the low life in equal excellent performances.
Any more ideas ?

>>By Ninjawoman   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 15:23)

Oooh yeah, Ninj!
Sean Bean's a definite! (Psst...he's always been my second choice after Viggo Mortenson.) Actually, though, if Hollywood (Miramax) drags this out much longer, the problem is gonna be age; none of our current suggestions will be young enough to play NS! I really don't want to see Nick with a facelift! :oP

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 15:30)

Well if its a Miramax film there is only one person the, ben affleck hahahaha, though myself i would like to see kevin (silent bob) smith as Nick and jason(Jay)mews as sarah hahahaha...has anyone got a sense of humour on here, mmmm thought not hahaha.

>>By Xander Cage   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 16:09)

Ooooh, Xander, I get it, I get it!

Ben Affleck IS a joke!

But... shhhh... lemme whisper this question cuz here's what I don't get:
What the heck is it with Brits and transies? ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 16:25)

What about Val Kilmer? Hehehehhe.... he's done nothing but Oscar-material movies lately.

>>By ortlieb   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 16:28)

Hehehe, Ort...
Val for NS, eh? Well, besides the fact that he's still yet another Yank, I suppose he does have some black kit experience -- albeit with a Batman cape. Uh-oh! You're not thinking of Nicole Kidman for Sarah, are you?!? ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 14 Oct 2004 16:46)

dear ortleib Spartan was pretty good.....
As for trannies, yes thats the british term for a pocket radio... as in transitor radio or trannies.. Also short name for ford transit van(See SBS TRansport In Mr Falconers book)
There seem to be a lack of humour among f-troopers lately and this has come as a deep and prfound sadness to me.
So here is a joke...
Three nuns go to heaven...
St Peter says before you can enter the gates you have to answer a question...
First nun walks up..
As you have been the nun for the shortest amount of time your question will be the easiest... " where did Adam live"
"Oh thats easy the nun said " he lived in Eden"
Correst in you go
Second nun approaches
As you have been a nun longer than the first your question be a bit tougher
what was the name of the first woman on earth
Oh thats easy Eve, correct in you go.
third nun a mother superior, as your have reached the highest point you will have the toughest question of all.
" What where Eve's first word on seeing Adam "
Oh thats is a hard one
correct in you go hahahahahahaahaha
