Nicky

S m i t h -- S t o n e

Per AM, in IA:

"It made me fucking angry, and I personally wanted to put the world to rights. I wanted to get the people responsible. I suddenly felt that I had a cause, that I was doing something, not just for political shit ... ; I was there because I wanted to do something for my own little gang."

... "All too often, British soldiers who died on active service in Northern Ireland would get a brief mention on the news -- "last night a British soldier..." -- and then go unremembered. But I resolved to myself that I would never forget Nicky Smith. I would always keep the newspaper cuttings. I would always have his blood stains on my map."

So he's named the character in his books after Nick Smith so he will always be rembered.

>>By Mickalos   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:24)

how sweet

>>By Mickalos   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:24)

where the hell does Stone come from??

>>By Ignaty   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:24)

Yep. :o)

That's what I believe.

Now if AM cares to dispute this theory, I'd be more than happy to sit down with him and hear him out... (vbg! vbw!)

Encraved in stone?

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:26)

hmm. I think I would have got the answer in under ten seconds if AIB hadn't given me such cryptic clues.

>>By Ignaty   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:28)

Could have always just plucked the name out of his head. He does make up some cracking names, Andy McNab, I'd kill to have a name like that but Chris Ryan what a boring name.

>>By Mickalos   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:30)

LOL, Ignaty!

Stone is just a pseudonym but I think it was deliberately chosen for being five letters and because of the entendres which could be imagined.... ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:30)

Frankie de Sabatino, i think that is one gem of a name.

>>By Ignaty   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:32)

so is Valentin Lebed

>>By Ignaty   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 17:32)

Personally, I like Ignaty.... ;o)

Re: NS name game:

I have a theory of own:

AM had a fellow in his RGJ unit. This fellow was a particularly disturbed individual, who most people regarded to be in for a "section 8". The guys name? Enton. Nicknamed: Sick Enton.

Sick Enton = anagram of Nick Stone.

Or...... maybe not?

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 21 Sep 2004 22:52)

LOL!!!

So it's Sick, is it, O? ;o)

But now, in an anagramatic way, you've got me wondering if Nick's name comes from that very exclusive special operators cadre -- the "not nice Ks" ....

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 22 Sep 2004 06:07)

For all we know he wanted to call him Nicholas Charles Muddlespoon III, then Mark Lucas said 'are you **** how am I gonna sell that? Look, Nicholas Charles will be just Nick, Nick or Nick, scissor-paper-stone! We all know what AM chose.

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 22 Sep 2004 12:20)

Ooooh AIB..... Not Nice K's. Masterful.... :-))

>>By ortlieb   (Wednesday, 22 Sep 2004 14:33)

<< "has more in come with Mick Stone" >>

More in common than whom, Flygirl?

Curious: Seeing as the search date was July 24, what brings this up now versus when you arrived? Been reading the poem from Pacemaker (Pg 1) again, have you? ;o)

Hello all,

Found this site while looking for Andy McNab stuff. I was quite surprised to see how much discussion is going on here as no-one I know has heard of AM much less read any of his books.

I did read B20 and IA several years ago but have only recently read some of his fiction (so lucky for me I didn't have to wait for each book to be published, but I do still have to track down a couple) and I must say I'm an instant fan.

The only problem now is that I have a new genre and a whole lot more new books to read. As has been said before, so many books, so little time. On reflection, that 's not really a problem is it?

Will have to go for now, my latest book is calling me and real life also intrudes. Be back soon.

Bye for now.

apologies - Andy

>>By Pomplemous   (Thursday, 23 Sep 2004 12:52)

Welcome, Caryn...
Good news! Your read list will be increasing by yet another AM book come November 4 -- Deep Black! Wondering: Have you been reading the NS series in sequence?

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 23 Sep 2004 12:59)

D'oh!

Mick / Nick, Stone / Stone... well, d'uh!

Hope ya saw me winkin' at ya, flygirl.... ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 23 Sep 2004 13:01)

No apologies, Pompelmous! Only good grins! :oD

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 23 Sep 2004 13:03)

Ok, silly question... Is Deep Black being released in the UK Nov 4 or here in the States too? Would they be releasing it in NZ in Nov if it's a UK release date? If so, I can always ask my friend to bring me a copy. :D

Now I just need to get him reading Andy's work too! ;)

A comedy of errors

The violent protests and spate of security disasters beggar belief – more so when London is on heightened terrorist alert.
The events that unfolded after some 20,000 demonstrators battled with anti-riot police outside the House of Commons left many in disbelief.
(...)
By all accounts, the latest security exposure by the undercover reporter raises more frightening issues – a real bomb could have killed up to 100 people and maimed a dozen others, according to a Special Forces (SAS) expert.

SAS hero Andy McNab, in calling for a shake-up of Parliament’s antiquated vetting system to deal with suicide terrorists, had reportedly described the impact of a bomb at a packed dining room as like Guy Fawkes Night.

Indeed if a suicide bomber had been able to stroll pass the House of Commons security with breathtaking ease, he would have dealt a crushing blow at the very core of British democracy.

Sorry if it's already been discussed, but just found out (i think) that Stan in B20 is called Dr Love in the proper version and Dr Sex in the US version!

>>By Ignaty   (Friday, 24 Sep 2004 21:02)

Uh-oh, Ignaty...

Which version is the "proper" one? ;o)

Stan is Doctor Sex in both the US and UK versions, but those are the only two versions I have (being as I'm mono-linguistically challenged)... :o)

Doesn't Mike mention the Doctor Sex nickname in Soldier Five, too?
