I'm sure mr. Mcnab will be glad to be number 1 on the gnooks board.
Congratulations ! 200 pages.

Reading through some of the pages, I have concluded that although this is a book forum, many posts aren't Mcnab related at all. Some are military/SAS/SF related ( and are quite interesting) but some get a bit silly and dribbly and make the board sound like a Miss Piggy versus Kermit the frog fight.

Finished reading B20, and liked it a lot. I don't think I'll go into his fiction books as I prefer the more non-fictional genre. I think Ratcliffe will be my next attempt and maybe the SBS Falconer later on.

Have a good one.

>>By spiketheprovo   (Sunday, 29 Aug 2004 17:50)

Hi Spike,

I can't remember if I mentioned this to you already, but if you like non-fiction and you've finished with Ratcliffe and Falconer, you might want to read "Inside Delta Force", by Eric Haney. It's along the same lines as Immediate Action. It goes into nice detail about his experiences during the selection process for SFOD-D as well as training and operations that he was involved in.

SAS hero refuses to parade for Queen

An SAS soldier who lost his leg fighting in Afghanistan refused to meet the Queen in protest at his claim for compensation being turned down by the Ministry of Defence.
The 28-year-old corporal, who was wounded during a battle with Taliban and al-Qaeda forces in November 2001, was meant to have paraded before the Queen when she visited the SAS Regiment's headquarters in Hereford in 2002.
(...)
The soldier was the most severely wounded of four SAS men injured during an attack on an al-Qaeda terrorist camp. He was shot three times in the left leg by a sniper.
He was dragged to safety by two colleagues - who were later awarded the George Medal for their bravery - and was evacuated, via Pakistan, to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham where his leg was amputated below the knee.
While recovering from his injuries, the soldier became increasingly frustrated by the quality of his medical care and the lack of interest shown by military officials.
(..)
Under MoD rules soldiers who are injured in a war zone and forced to leave the Army are entitled to a war pension, but not compensation, unless they can prove it was caused through negligence.
(..)
The MoD yesterday declined to discuss the case.

Hi all F-troopers,
Well i just finished reading this months empire movie magazine, and in it was an article on michael mann's new film collatrell , it said that one of the fight arrangers was an ex sas guy who also worked on michael manns heat, if this film is half as good as heat, i'm already sitting in the front row with my supersize popcorn and jumbo size drink....
i remember seeing Jim davidson telling a story on his recent tv show the movie heat.....

>>By briwriter   (Tuesday, 31 Aug 2004 02:26)

Thanks, Briwriter!

Got all excited that this might be a film "The Protector" I've been watching for since Nov 2002 (see blurb at end of post), but "Collateral" must be yet another (third-?) film. Didn't find direct reference to AM (yet anyway) but this trainer appears to have worked with/for AM during "Heat"... so by the transitive property... :o)

http://www.collateral-themovie.com/home.php

"... both Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx underwent very individual training regimens to identify more fully with their individual characters. Cruise trained extensively with Michael "Mick" Gould, a former member of the British Special Air Service and a respected authority in the areas of martial arts and weapons training. In recent years, Gould has turned his expertise into a career as a consultant and instructor for clients raining from military Special Forces and law enforcement to feature films. He had first been recruited to work in motion pictures by Michael Mann on the movie 'Heat,' and Mann called on him again to give Cruise, on of the industry's most affable stars, the makings of a consummate killer.

For the scenes involving gun play, Cruise practiced on a police firing range with live ammunition, which gave him a familiarity with the feeling of firing a real gun that is impossible to get from firing blanks. Using live ammunition also gave the actor a respect for the weapon, even when it was later loaded with blanks. 'I've fired weapons in pictures before, but I'd never had that kind of training with a gun,' Cruise states. 'Mick is a great instructor. He helped me to find my own style and also trained me beautifully so I was very safe when using a weapon. I couldn't afford to make a mistake because even though you're firing blanks, they are full-flash blanks and could hurt somebody. But it also added a dimension to the character that I really enjoyed exploring. It was like building the character from the ground up, so when it came time to do those scenes, I felt very confident. I didn't have to think about it; this is just who Vincent is...this is what he does. ...."

Here's the only blurb I've ever found re: "The Protector" (found 11/6/02). Truth is I'd sort of given up...

"On site for the film 'The Protector' starring the yummy Gabriel Byrne, Jean Reno and a very popular Jennifer Connelly, director Michael Mann has hired ex-SAS soldier Andy McNab as their weapons and tactics consultant. This is their second pairing ever since the 1994 movie 'Heat'. Rumour has it that McNab will also have a small role in the movie. He has trained many of the movies actors in a seculded location in northern England. That's one place I'd like to be a fly on the wall at."

Hi everyone, as usual I have a McNab question I'm hoping one of you Brits can answer. In Immediate Action, McNab refers to working at the McDonald's in Catford circa 1975--does anyone know if the McDonald's in question was located at 92 Rushey Green, or whether their was a different location at the time? I unfortunately know nothing of Catford, for all I know there are fifty McDonald's there. Thank you in advance if anyone can help with this.

Back to Michael Mann for a mo: for 2005 is scheduled

"Arms and the Man"
Inspired by and article on Victor Bout (the worlds biggest arms trafficker), this is a story about a federal agent who goes on a hunt for stolen plutonium. It is planned to be released in 2005. (Directed by Michael Mann)

Now.. I know who I'd want to be an advisor on this movie as well ;o)

Re: SAS hero refuses to parade for Queen,

exactly the same thing happened to a firend of mine Trev Walker, he got hit by a serb tank shell in the brit base (whilst going for a shower!!) Stary Vitez i think it was, Bosnia in 96.

After undergoing a series of operations he lost a leg.. and claimed compensation from the UN.. thay said they would pay compensation but only to reimburse the British government after the MOD actually paid out.... after three years of court cases including going to the european court of human rights..Trev was denied compensation because of the legal loophole of whether it was war or not..

What pissed Trev and his wife off was that this particular tank had been popping up and firing a couple of shells on a regular basis. But none of them were hits so when the local commander asked for permission to engage and destroy the tank, the higher echelons said no... because of possible political impact.... a week after Trev got hit a couple of helicopter gunships destroyed the tank when it tried to do the same thing..

God bless the higher echelons and the politicians whom sit cosy in their armchairs, send others off to do their dirty work and then use legal loopholes to deny guys the right for recompense.....

Oh hang on I'm being too socialist here aren't I....ooops sorry must toe the line

bye

Whatever you are being here Geo ;o) lots of us do appreciate a personal story about newspaper articles we read. I myself always ask with any news article what the truth factor is, so please do share, it's very interesting.

McNab was on the radio today. He was talking about the moscow school seige I can't remember exactly what he said as I was half asleep after a four hour train journey but whatever he said was very knowledgable and witty, that i can be sure of.

I'm sure everyone is aware of the tragic events in Russia recently...Rather than dwell on the horror of it, which is obvious, or point out that the Chechnyan murderers were and are part of a worldwide extremist-Muslim conspiracy, which is equally obvious, I'll instead ask a sort of silly question:
Did anyone else notice the abundance of lame tiger-stripe camo on the Ivan's BDUs? That stuff was proven not to work very well in Vietnam, where it was DESIGNED to work, much less in Russia! You'd be much better off with some OD fatigues and a can of black spray paint. Sad, really...Seems they shop at the ghetto surplus store.
I also could have sworn I saw a folding-stock AK-47 with a scope on it, which is kind of like putting a muzzle brake on a .22 if you ask me...Of course, no one asked me, so I'll shut up now.
Bye.

I was watching the news the other day and they were interviewing a boy, about 13 or 14 years old, who escaped. He said, "When I saw the gunmen running in I thought it was just a joke." And me and the mate I was with had a good laugh at that. You can just imagine the kid sitting at the gate seeing the chechens thinking, "oh here come some men with ak47s and explosives strapped around them running into the school, and now they're shooting all my friends hahaha what a lark."

And that russian counter terrorist team isn't too profficient either, I don't know if it's the spetz nazs or what but they've fucked up more than their fair share of hostage rescue operations. In the theater seige they had the bright idea of pumping poisoness gas in. Did they not consult experts or even think hold on a minute there are hostages in there what happens whenthey breathe the gas in. And now according to sky news they panicked when a bomb accidentaly went off and started shooting at the school without a plan. You would think after this they would start to train thier counter terrorists better Surely they wont let something like this happen again.

>>By Mickalos   (Saturday, 4 Sep 2004 12:48)

Hi,just a little idea to keep everyone on their toes. What if AM had escaped
and CR had been caught?

Would CR have written a book about his search for inner peace whils in the hands of his captors?

Would AM then have written TOTGA with a soldiery, tough style of writing?

Just a thought,AMds.

Afternoon ladies. Reckon you lot must have been wetting yourselves yesterday with all the lads popping up on various media with insights into the school siege in Beslan. Funny how John Macaleese and Robin Horsfall had convergent opinion on procedural mismanagement but your man was out on his own. Absolutely. You hope his prediction of the same event occurring on british soil within 5 years dont come true.
