Wow Flygirl, you've read that snippit from B/Dev elsewhere and you post it here?? Either you play very dangerous or you are very close to B/Dev and got permission..

Place your bets.

Hi,I've been lurking for quite a while.Great info about AM's books.

I read Immediate Action,B20 and Chris Ryan's The One That Got Away, but none of the fictional stuff.

I notice that we have a female C130 pilot here,which is good,as I am ex RAF,only 6 years though,aircraft mechanic.

Now my oldest brother was in for 27 years, about ten of which he spent at Lyneham, where the C130 is based.

So I wonder Flygirl,if you can remind me of the nickname given to the aircraft numbered 222,as I seem to have forgotten. But,my brother is on
holiday at the moment,so I can't ask him.

Oh,yeah, and there was a ground engineer there named Kim,is he still in
the basketball team?

Take care,AMds.

Welcome Andy Mcnads, nice to see you post after a while..
I'm sure Flygirl/boy will be more than willing to answer your questions, no doubt they will be correct as well.

You've read non of the fictional stuff so far? Would you share if you're not interested in fictional or just didn't get to it yet?

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 16 Aug 2004 12:23)

Hi,when I was in the RAF,a workmate of mine said,"Why don't you read this"?

B20.Now,I wasn't a real nato potato,so I was a bit wary,as everybody else and his dog in the airforce was reading it.I read it though, and liked it.

We all had a chance to go to one of his talks which was only open to military personel.I didn't go,wish I had now after reading IA.

I live in Japan, and bought IA and CR's book when we went back to England for Christmas.Great stuff.

So,in answer to you question about the fiction stuff,it is a little hard to get in the local bookshop.

Thankyou for your kind welcome.

AMds.

Hello again,I just had a look at flygirl's profile,now I get the flygirl/boy joke.

Interesting,as I see flyperson lives in Lincoln,another coincidence,as I was
based at RAF Waddington which is in Lincoln.

Maybe it meant from Lincoln,as the home of the C130 is at Raf Lyneham which is in Wiltshire, about 350 miles away. That would make commuting a
real pain in the neck,ha,ha.

Hey flygirl, which part of Lincoln are you from?

AMnd.

Hmm....

As online-comms doesn't provide the luxury of actually seing the person you're talking to, I don't suppose it takes the rocket-scientist of the week to slap on a FE in front of "male", and there you go: gender swap. Mindboggling stuff.....

>>By ortlieb   (Monday, 16 Aug 2004 15:03)

lol at both of you, nice posts by the way.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Monday, 16 Aug 2004 18:07)

As a newbie at gnooks/flork, I humbly ask that someone explain to me what the purpose of swapping genders or hiding you identity is. I mean, if you're afraid to be yourself on an internet message board among strangers, you've gotta be a total loser in real life. Personally, I really don't give a rat's ass if every single person here knows exactly where I live, especially since I come here to share and learn rather than get attention. If anyone here is actually so pathetic that they would seek out a "real life" encounter with a fellow poster, all I can do is feel sorry for them. So, basically, I don't care what gender you are or claim to be or wish you were or are getting surgery to attain--why not just be yourself?

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 17 Aug 2004 03:39)

LOL! What the heck is THAT all about, ortie!?

As far as being self... yeah. That's my motto too. I can't remember lies anyway so lying counterproductive! :)

As for getting together with internet friends in real life... now that's actually lots of fun! Have actually gotten together with several friends I met over the net and plan to do it again at the end of this month... meeting some new folks as well!

Anyway... hi all and hope to be around more often but that totally depends on if I can get my 'puter to be good and stop with all those pretty blue screens! :p

>>By Dare   (Tuesday, 17 Aug 2004 06:29)

Dare, I'd love to get together with my internet friends in real life, too--I should have phrased that bit better.

Just been on holiday and read CR's 'The Increment', anyone else read it? Sorry if you've discussed it already. Thought it was quite good but still not quite up there with The Watchman. Do quite like Matt Browning though.

>>By Ignaty   (Tuesday, 17 Aug 2004 12:19)

yeh i thought it was good but it got a bit silly at the end.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Tuesday, 17 Aug 2004 14:14)

Yeah,great comment Nemesis2842004,as I agree with you,the term
"Embuggerment" did get a bit silly towards the end.

But what are your toughts on the belt kit issue?

Take care,AMds.

Good read Majorette.........totally correct.

My own terminology concerning suicide bombers "want to die" as opposed to "willing to die" is more or less in parallel with your own reading. I wanted to explain that many suicide bombers do actually want to die because they have been religiously indoctrinated, often since a young age as you described and believe that god will reward them. Such indoctrination from an authoritive figure often includes the description that the suicide bomber's own family will also be rewarded for their sacrifice of a loved one. A number of apprehended or potential suicide bombers that have questioned in Iraq and Israel, I have been present during such interviews and they have often explained that their own family members have actively encouraged the commencement of the suicide action. As we all know, religion runs deep in the Middle East and the deeper it runs the less scared of death one becomes, to a point of actually welcoming and wanting it. One must also remember the financial rewards that many families of suicide bombers still to this day are given by senior members of various fundamentalist groups.

So many posts in my typical random way

I’m reading a non fiction book called Delta Force by Col. Charles Beckworth (the founder of Delta force). What gave him the ideal for Delta was training for a year with the 22 SAS. He referred to his follow up report as the SAS report and described building a unit based on the SAS model. He speaks very highly of the SAS. On a personal note people that I have met that had trained with SAS had thought highly of them and mention learning a lot. It came up that it seemed they didn’t have much in the way of equipment. One guy did like some gear that an Australian SAS had (minimalist camping kind of gear).

I also just finished CR's Greed. While it is an entertaining read I felt it was much like any “spy” novel. It did have some rather glaring holes in the plot. To me AM is a much better word smith.

Last book for NS? I certainly hope not. Let us not forget that there is room for NS’s situation to improve and not just be a continuous spiral into hell. He could start doing well and then have the rug pulled from under him again (for quite awhile and more often I hope. There are still plenty of people who need to be brutally beaten and NS has room for a few more scars).

>>By BadTime   (Thursday, 19 Aug 2004 21:38)

Amen BadTime - certainly hope with you ;o)

Weird:
"Army recruits should be banned from drinking tea and playing football or rugby, according to a medical expert hired by the Ministry of Defence"
(..)
"Dr Hall, who gave evidence to the Gulf war hearing in London last week, accused many of the veterans he examined of being "obese" and said that American army practices were superior to those of their British counterparts.

He said recruits should be banned from drinking anything containing caffeine, including Coca Cola, tea and coffee as it caused "cardiac irregularities".

He also recommended that the MoD should ban "bodily contact sports such as rugby, soccer and hockey". It should also prohibit soldiers smoking and stop allowing alcohol on military premises."

Doubt Dr Hall has many fans in the army after this and British army without tea?? Is that even possible?

NEVER!!! I would surrender my life before I surrender my kettle

>>By Mickalos   (Saturday, 21 Aug 2004 00:14)

Lynn--just wondered...."American army practices?" The American Navy drinks enough caffeine to support the entire Columbian coffee trade, and our Army isn't far behind. Glad someone thinks we're health nuts, but in reality most of my military friends are McDonald's addicts.
As for obese, I did notice, and wonder if anyone else has, in "Immediate Action" there's a picture of the "Ice-Cream Boys" practicing with pistols, and one of them appears to be, well, a bit on the bloated side. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the guy in question is in better shape than I am, I just found it a bit odd. Anyone else notice the large gut in that pic?

>>By Sick of Cute Screennames   (Saturday, 21 Aug 2004 02:47)

Goodness, yes SOCS! I remember upping my coffee intake to 20+ cups a day while I was in the service!

I remember that pic! Was wondering about it too but figured it was nice at least ONE of them was near normal! LOL Of course, it was probably just their stance. ;)

SAS hunts missile gang after strike damages Warrior
(Filed: 21/08/2004)

The SAS has been hunting insurgents who badly damaged a British Warrior armoured vehicle with an anti-tank missile.

The Warrior was ambushed north of Basra last month and sent back to the UK to be examined. It is thought to have been hit by a sophisticated Soviet missile system captured by al-Qa'eda-backed rebels in Chechnya.

It is feared that Chechen rebels have supplied AT-4 Spigot anti-armour wire-guided missiles to terrorists in southern Iraq.

That would pose a significant threat to British troops and the Black Watch, an armoured infantry regiment equipped with Warriors deployed recently to protect them.

The southern UK special forces team operating in Iraq and made up of SAS and SBS was ordered to find the weapons.

It mounted a series of surveillance operations to prevent further attacks, constantly moving to new locations in order to put pressure on the extremists.

I disagree totally with this Gulf war.

I was in the Military during Gulf War part 1, Desert Storm, Op Granby or whatever you wish to call it and that was just and necessary (I didn't take part in Op Granby unfortunately.... not many troops were transferred to operational units unless to make up the wartime Orbat... and christ we tried hard to get a transfer believe me) , okay there were grumblings in the community about GW part 1 being all about Oil, and although yes this was unoubtedly a consideration, the Invasion of kuwait was unjust, illegal and Saddam had to be stopped. Why the F**k did we stop when Saddam's forces had been pushed back out of Kuwait?.why didn't we take Saddam out when we had the chance?.... cos it may have been against UN resolutions and exceeded the remit of the Coalition? cos it would have angered the arab state members of the Coalition? cos George Bush Snr. didn't want to become embroiled in Iraqi politics, and having to take care of and rebuild the iraqi state?

Well what's GW part 2 all about?.... where are the weapons of mass destruction? when did the UN or the rest of the world, sanction the 'Invasion of Iraq' cos lets face it not lets f**k around the bush here.... without legal and WORLD approval thats what it was, an invasion... what coalition is there to upset now? okay the Saudi's let the Allied forces use thier land as a staging and stepping off point, but they were s**t scared of Saddam attacking them anyway..when did Saddam ever directly support Al Quaeda? when would he support a geezer who is just as meglomaniacal as he is, how would that serve his powerbase and grip over his people?....

So what has little Georgie done now?.... was he so ashamed that he was too chicken to serve in Vietnam that he's created his own personnal vietnam? cos thats what he's got..he's got his own personal trainset now and by f**k is he going to play with it how he feels fit...could it be just a wee tad about oil.... I mean look at Rumsfeld pleading with the Iraqi forces not to damage the oil wells like last time.... I mean how on earth will all those kiddies in America be able to drive to school in the cars that daddy bought them, if the nasty Iraqis damage the oil supply.....could it be about reports from scientists that the North American oil fields may only yield another 50 years or so....??...

The reason why I write this stems from what Lynn wrote about the attack on the British Warrior APC...all my Life I remember reports on TV about another soldier being Killed in Northern Ireland, I remember being shit scared when my Dad served in Londonderry in 71 and 72...the bogside was not a particularly nice place back then if you were sporting the latest design in DPM, and throughout all this time... not one family of the deceased soldier criticised the government for having troops in NI.. even after countless numbers of civilians were ripped apart by terrorist bombs, nobody thought that what we were doing in NI was illegal... apart from the comfortable communists and those who believed that cos an ancestor was irish that they are white gold and green through and through....mmmmm thats most of Boston then!!...Now yet again we have flag draped coffins being flown into RAF Lyneham....and ALL the families are criticising the government now...and for what have these soldiers died?

I dont agree with this war as I said but why are we pussy footing around now risking the lives of countless numbers of young soldiers of differing nations, the first stages of the war were outright unabashed war..... now we have Counter insurgency.... policing actions..... just get in there wipe these f**kers out and send the troops back home....or send them home now.... lets face it after after the disgusting occurances at Abu Ghraib...('I was just following orders'..... mmmmmm..... weren't the SS just following orders at Belsen?) the allied forces have lost ALL respect and support from the Iraqi citizens whom were sitting on the fence not sure which way to jump.... well they have jumpe now havent they?... into the camp of yet another bloody cleric avowed on destroying as many human lives as he thinks his 'God' would be pleased with. So how would an all out full scale attack on the rebel militia harm the allied cause... cos it aint a popular cause now anyway is it...

When will the Georgie Bush realise that he hasn't got the god given right to be the worlds policeman regardless of how powerful his nation is, when will he realise that democracy must be brought about in a country by it's own citizens... he cant force it on them, that sort of pisses them off a little and then we get people flying passenger jets into high rise buildings...know what I mean.

>>By geo   (Saturday, 21 Aug 2004 16:11)

WOW GEO,

Almost poetic,

Well reaserched, and well written. Solid conclusions.

One problem Geo, America is a Soveriegn Nation. We can kinda, really do what we wish to protect are citizenry. That is what war is all about. Oh yes, the ineffective UN? We don't need there permission. Ask the Rwandins what the UN did for them GEO !

>>By DTO   (Saturday, 21 Aug 2004 20:16)

I agree with you completely geo, Invading iraq and getting bogged down there with terrorists is not in britain's interests and thats what our armed forces are for, to preserve our nations iterests around the world. I suppose the world is a better place without lunatics controlling parts of it, but he wasn't doing anything wrong at the time of the invasion and still, if he did do something wrong, let the UN sort it out thats what they are there for. Why risk good mens lives and spend millions for no reason. I mean im planning on joining the army after I've finished college and the chances are that our army will still be in Iraq at that time, say if the spanish invaded gibralter or the argentines invaded the falklands again I'd have no problem going to those places and risking my life but Iraq. I suppose it would be exciting to go but i wouldn't like to die there or be paralyzed for no good reason.
