On 6/3/86 I had just driven in from spain, when I noticed on the opposite carraigeway an Ambulance, a Police Patrol car, and several police officers. I could see blankets covering 2 bodies on the pavement with their feet sticking out (McCann & Farrel). I didn't have a clue what was happening, assuming it to be a traffic accident. It was only later that details began to emerge. If the IRA had been successful they would have wiped out dozens of schoolchildren, residents of an Old People's Home, and countless other bystanders & Tourists, as well as the Resident Battalion Band. Thank You SAS.

Unusually, I watched a movie on TV the other night. It was called 'Ronin', apparently the name for a samurai whose master has been killed. It starred Al Pacino but also featured our old friend Sean Bean who played AM in the B20 movie. In this, Bean plays a guy claiming to be ex SAS. After a shoot out though, Been 'throws up' with fear prompting Pacino's character to doubt his credentials. He asks Bean, in increasingly menacing terms "what colour is the boat house at Stirling Lines?". When no answer comes, he is thrown out of the gang. Another character asks Pacino "well what colour is the boat house?". Pacino replies "how the fuck should I know".
Boat house?
>>By camban (Monday, 14 Jun 2004 12:21)
If he was really SAS the correct answer would be 'there is no boat house at Stirling Lines' ??
>>By Lynn (Monday, 14 Jun 2004 13:53)
Yep! Excellent movie, Camban!
Believe it or not, I stumbled on Ronin last year when I was flipping channels and discovered it was "Movies for Guys Who Like Guy Movies" night on TBS. So, being as "MfGWLGM" is in Crisis Four, and being the avid AM fan that I am (all things relate, you know!), of course, I had to see what movies were airing! What a hoot! They were showing Heat (Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Crisis Four, Remote Control, Big Al DeNiro... vbg! vbw!). I mean, how AM can you get!?! Andyway, the next film was another Robert DeNiro film -- Ronin.
What makes me grin most is that three years ago I would have thought Ronin was a good movie, but instead it is an excellent movie because of what I've learned over the past two years courtesy of AM et al. I recognize techie terms/references and appreciate so much more of the subtext -- the boat house being a perfect example! I guess it's needless to say, but I will -- the DVD came home with me the next day.... :o)

Re: Heat
Source: http://mannfan.freeservers.com/heat.htm
"What's spectacular about this shootout is the way it's directed and coreographed. The robbers back each other while advancing and lay suppressing fire to each direction until making a breach to the police barricades. Clips are changed accordingly and in timely manner, directions are confirmed and burst are controlled. Why is this? Because if you check the credits, you'll see a very interesting name next to technical weapons training. Andy McNab. ... McNab was intensively participating in Heat to make sure that the robbers utilized all the possible tactics used in a city warfare type of combat. I read that McNab and his fellows even cheered loudly when Kilmer _finally_ managed to change the clip of his M-16 rifle in a timely manner (which is actually pretty hard without lots of training)."
Source: http://www.thegunzone.com/fff.html
"One of the most frequently asked questions on Rec.Guns and various Internet firearms forums concerns the ordnance used in the 1995 Michael Mann film, Heat... ... There is some anecdotal evidence that the late Messrs. Larry Eugene Phillips, Jr. and Emil Matasareanu used Mann's Heat as a "training film" for their spectacular but abortive attempt at robbing the North Hollywood, California branch of Bank of America on 28 February 1997 (www.student.oulu.fi/~hmikkola/shootout.html) ... Hey Poole! I don't have balls so you'll have to find another donor. Sorry for your loss, though I've heard it's aerodynamic! I wasn't saying YOU were playing "pocket pool", just that was what kept going through my head when I saw your name. It could have been worse, though. I could have thought "pu*z"! ;-)
Don't sweat the little stuff... 'cause while you do, the BIG stuff will flatten your a**! ;-)
Stay cool and be well!

Found the following argument re: ex-SAS soldiers' books in an undated article (pre-Soldier Five publication and recent lifting of MoD restrictions):
"... the thirst for more direct contact with anyone associated with the SAS grew as their exploits were seized upon for media and public gratification. SAS sponsored corporate hospitality parties in the camp Killing House attracted new disciples who rubbed shoulders with real SAS men. Many of these parties contained foreign nationals and sporting figures that, without the need to sign Gagging Orders were introduced to top-secret tactics, which should only be revealed whilst attacking an unsuspecting enemy.
It is therefore with no surprise that the Law Lords ruled against Mike Coburn as it has always been a case of *do as I say but not as I do* within the management of the Special Forces. Double standards have prevailed for years, leading to ex. SAS soldiers being banned from Life Time membership of Regimental Associations for daring to criticise those very double standards that allow one author to regimental reunions but deny others who have had their books cleared by the MoD.
There is no end in sight to this mess and the massed ranks of ex. SF are deeply divided on any course of positive action, whilst others take civilians up the Jungle to see if they are Tough Enough to join the SAS and many others have taken part in the new 4 part Channel 4 series about the Regiment. This will no doubt lead many of those ex-SF who took part being banned by the double standards committee or maybe not! .... "
www.nesa.org.uk/html/security_and_secrecy.htm
Prompted me to wonder: The "banned" supposedly include our authors AM, CR, etc., but does anyone know if the "Tough Enough" guys have been banned too? Given CR’s “Hunting for Chris Ryan” program, is he (theoretically) doubly banned? And with the recent lifting of restrictions by the MoD, will the existing bannings of ex-SAS authors be rescinded?

Poolesprocket-- Just want to apologise for my most ROYAL gaffe. I let my ex-military joking manner get out of line. I wasn't aware of your situation and I was truly not trying to insult you. Your nick just kicked in funny with me and I kept reading it wrong. My bad for bringing it up and I truly didnt know.
That's as much as I can say and probably more than you want to hear on the subject and I hope you'll accept my apology. It is sincerely felt and meant.

did Ronin have Al Pacino in it? I cant picture him if so.
Did anybody watch Das Boot on Sunday? and most sundays for 5 weeks? last part this Sunday!
sigh...Jurgen Prochnow
ps Hello folks!

Hey! Nice to see you guys again!
Errr, S2K... Not sure which program you mean -- are you talking about the Panorama program, Bravo Two Zero: A Question of Betrayal? (don't know of it being a 4-part program tho)
Ouch, Srowlandson... Not the kind of "in trouble" I would have expected... :o(
Hi, Pomplemous... Have you been off SAS commando-ing all this while?!? As to Das Boot, are you saying it's being aired in segments over a five-week period? Isn't it only 149 minutes? :o\
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004 09:25)
So I'm going to put another non-SAS/AM tangent on this board, but try this guys:
http://www.saviodsilva.com/d/u/hand.htm
Analyse your handwriting to find out what an "expert" would think of you. I agree with the majority of mine, except "you're not very original, but very responsible, possibly in management" haha, yeah right in management. I also don't agree with the "person with an over-developed ego and a tendency to be bossy". Ego? Maybe; I am pretty special. Bossy? Can't be me!

Hey, AIB...
I was talking about your post (>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 15 Jun 2004 22:21))
2nd Paragraph .....There is no end in sight to this mess and the massed ranks of ex. SF are deeply divided on any course of positive action, whilst others take civilians up the Jungle to see if they are Tough Enough to join the SAS ****and many others have taken part in the new 4 part Channel 4 series about the Regiment****. This will no doubt lead many of those ex-SF who took part being banned by the double standards committee or maybe not! .... "
Now, What 4 part channel 4 series???
S2K
>>By Shoot-To-Kill (Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004 12:23)
Aaaah, okay, now I see what triggered your question, S2K...
Small problem tho. Being as my post yesterday was an excerpt from an undated article I found, I really don't know the exact the timeframe the writer meant when he referenced "the *new* 4 part Channel 4 series..." And being as I'm in the US, I've never seen the SAS-related programs (Tough Enough, Ultimate Force, Hunting CR, etc.) that have been discussed here [great big sad sigh], but maybe someone closer to home (who gets Channel 4) can help at this point.... :o)
>>By am-i-binned (Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004 13:50)
C4 series - there was one earlier this year can't remember when, giving an insight into all SAS involvements (well those known publically!) from oman through to GW1. It wasn't just "our generation" veterans but those involved in the early SAS. The real SAS story I think, or something like that.
>>By Bethan (Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004 14:11)
The Channel 4 series that STK is asking about is surely "SAS Desert: Are You Tough Enough". I sent him a detailed answer but I wasn't logged on when I tried to send it, so not sure if he got it. Let me know please STK.

hello i came upon your forum a while ago and as some of you seem to know some guys from the sas i have a question you may be able to answer. prince harry has apparently said he would like to join the sas, which can't happen coz of who he is, i was wondering whether wills or harry had been to the killing house for the demonstrations? would the press be able to report about it and did they when the boys mum went? no matter if no one can help, i was just wondering. thanks alot bye
>>By major bummer (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 10:35)
Those who have read Ken Connor's dry but worthy tome, endorsed by AM, ought to be alarmed at his conclusions; that GW1 was a total cock up by the SAS, and that he now sees no future for the Regiment. Following on from that, Alan Hoe, David Stirling's official biographer, reveals the even worse cock ups of the early days which make the GW1 episode look like a slick operation! After WW2, they were disbanded until new emergencies came along. Wonder if that is about to happen again?
>>By camban (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 12:52)
Ahh no - Das Boot was always a fecking long film - put into 6 50 minute parts - then squashed down into a 149 minute film for lesser concentration-spanned people.
heh
yep - back from ops - thrilling time - I return - stirred, but not shaken (AS THE BOND CATCHPHRASE IS MEANT TO BE!!)
I CAN tell you I was in france for amonth and it was just like stepping in AM's book - which one? er - liberation day. except I wasnt in Nice, but it was nice - and there were less dogs - but apart from that - ALL the same!!
I never get to watch the SAS programmes anymore - sis-in-law insists on coronation street or big brother pants instead. sigh xx
>>By Pomplemous (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 14:01)
Well pomplemous, you should put said sister in law in a death grip until the prog has finished; or move out.
And, the Bond phrase is: shaken, not stirred, so there.
>>By camban (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 15:33)
no no and a bag of no. if you read one of the books you will fin that james bond comes back from saving the world and has a drink - shaken, but not stirred, which was supposed to reflect how he was feeling after such a hair rasing experience - but because he was super cool - he never flapped, - so stirred, but not shaken.
its the stupid movies that got it wrong on purpose cos the other way was supposed to sound better.
not that I know - I could actually have made that up, but I heard a sean connery interview once.
>>By Pomplemous (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 17:53)
the regiment will never be disbanded, they are too good but the hierachy need to get a grip and start giving soldiers what they need to complete the job, all parts of the forces have been jealous of the hereford guys for as long as they have been about due to the fact that they got what they desired as far as equipment nd weapons go, but now thats not even happening for them so what chance has anybody got. plus 6 months in iraq for double your yearly wage plus your choice of kit hmmm why stay in the military at all.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Thursday, 17 Jun 2004 21:38)
Nem... sadly that's a typical political response to any kind of military action. The politicians who hate the military use it as a budget cruncher to make protesters at home happy. "See! The military overspends and doesn't need all these fancy gadgets! They can make do with cheap stuff and not waste taxpayers dollars." Then when the military screws up because their equipment fails... or because they are expected to do miracles with "technology" that is faulty or only works under certain circumstances... then is expected to perform faultlessly under ANY and ALL circumstances.... Well that can't be the fault of the equipment of the cheap bas**rds that cut the military budget, can it?!? Of course not!!! It must be the fault of the "violent morons" that were fooled into joining the military in the first place!
Strangely enough... military success usually leads to a DECREASED budget. If they can perform with what they have... make them do it with less! That's the way of number-crunching politicians.
Another thing... British forces, SAS and SBS have had some failures... but they've also had ALOT of rousing successes which the media doesn't say much about if they don't have to. SO the public hears all the FU's and little of the good work so they don't realise what a good job the military does. Public confidence, especially from the general public that has no real knowledge of how it works, plummets and the politicians and media get their sound-bites from the ignorant masses. Then the media SCREAMS in the headlines about any scandal they can get their hands on... If they don't have a juicy enough scandal, they can always inflate or make more up from bits and pieces of rumour, innuendo, griping from malcontents and anecdotal "evidence".
Sad state of affairs for the military men and women.
