<...Thanks Lynn,
I have read all of Chris ryans, except the one with 10 in the title, all of Andys, but am hesitant to look at any others at the moment, for fear of a disapointing read.....>

Sheddy,

Life would be pretty dull if one never tried anything new for fear of disappointment...

I tend to read just over a chapter a day, as I read too and from work on the train each day. Although sometimes the book is that gripping it is hard not to pick it up later at night.

I might revisit B20 and Immediate action again soon, might pickup on a few more things since reading TOTGA, Real B20 and Soldier Five.

I think you know as well as anyone mr sroly, that what you have said is correct about a dull life, but by taking a small portion of one post from the topic, you have managed to find a reply....8-)

You will note I have spelled out doing research, the likes of these sites, so as to limit the risk of finding a disapointing read, like Mathew Reillys Area 7, not just fearing picking up a book period ;-)

>>By Head Shed   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 09:21)

Head Shed, LOL, we're all barking mad for being here in the first place - hardly a place for sane individuals at the best of times...

Re your previous line: "the storyline, etc is staying between the ears, than reading alot at once, you oughto try it 8-)"

That all depends on what you have between the ears - brain cell count and capacity for holding charge! ;-)

Dare: sssshhh, like DTO's whispered warning, is "The Garden Shed" still there? Hard to tell, the bushes have grown some, but has the Merry Gardener ceased having a topiary garden or just letting the grass grow beneath his feet in wild abandonment and splendour of nature taking its natural course... <<Lee Child message board right there behind that little herb patch next the haunted arbour.>>

Hi everyone, been lurking for a couple of weeks, mainly cos I could not log in, but it has just deigned to let me in. I got B20 for my birthday at the end of January '04 and have now read 23 SF books since then. Including all of AM, all of CR, and several others. Read "Soldier A" yesterday, what crap, my first disappointment of the genre, but of course, not a biog nor a genuine SF operative. I would like to know who else has now read B20, TOTGA, The real Bravo Two Zero by Michael Asher, and Soldier Five. I perceive that Michael Asher has had the piss taken big time by his Arab sources, though his first book, "Shoot to Kill" was a good, interesting and different read. Though why anyone who gained the beige beret would then join the SPG in Belfast is a mystery. By the way, my wife refuses to read these "boys books", so surprised to find so many girls here.

Hail and well met, camban! Glad you finally got in! The board is a great way to exchange ideas and opinions with a number of interesting people. I hope you enjoy your time here. *waves*

Not sure why the genre gets so many women readers. There have been many suggestions as to what those reasons could be including... we want to be more masculine, want to be men, want to catch men, think SAS/SBS guys are sexy, think they are DANGEROUS and sexy, want to mother them, want to heal and nurture them, need some excitement in our otherwise humdrum lives, etc., etc., etc.... I think some women just like a good book that tells interesting stories, whether they are fiction or non-fiction. :-)

DW-- My feelings aren't so tender that a little pruning would hurt them. But thank you for the concern. ;-)

I can't imagine him deleting a post simply for mentioning or asking about another author. If he's going to prune any and all posts that mention other authors this will be one sadly depleted board. If that were the case, he would have banished most CR mentions to the CR board, TC to the TC board, etc. ;-)

By the way, is there some sort of message sent to a poster when their post is poofed? I mean other than the obvious lack of said post? I can't remember from one day to the next what or to whom I've written so if one of my posts did get poofed I wouldn't notice unless someone mentioned it. I'm pretty sure I got a post or two relegate to the ether, but can't remember if there was any kind of "YOU HAVE SINNED!!!" kind of message sort of thingy attending. :-)

And how does that karma thing work? I wonder how many poofings get a poster sent to the bench or shed. Is the bench like purgatory and the shed a lower level of He**? Does it take more time to get out of one and back to the board? Just wondering. :-)

>>By Dare   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:29)

I found that LC thing behind the bush too. Thanks! :-)

Now I just have to remember to look for those books at my local used bookstore. *adds LC to evergrowing list of authors/books to read* And that other Lee author that was listed on that board looks interesting too! ARRRGGGHHH!!! Too many books, too little time!

>>By Dare   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:36)

Guess Dare is a girl too! Guys must be outnumbered here. Don't understand the way this board works yet; I got one message as a kind of backroom email then the response above from Dare.

So, what about the most accurate story of B20? Must be Soldier Five?

Any earlier discussions on same that I can be pointed to? Not got time to read 167 pages!

>>By camban   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 15:43)

The flork stuff is a nice way to communicate off-board. Hope you won't hold my being a girl against me. :-)

Sometimes the posts get a little fierce, but there are tons of interesting ones comparing different SAS/SF writers and discussing the merits of one or another. Personal preferences and opinions are freely shared with sometimes resultant ruffled feathers, but all in all, we're a pretty happy friendly bunch.

There are a few posters who keep good tabs on what's been posted and all that. I'm sure someone will flork you a list of pages to check out for discussions. ;-) And there are tons of sites with related interesting info. Have fun and look forward to seeing you around. :-)

>>By Dare   (Tuesday, 4 May 2004 16:19)

During my absence from posting, I read a few of CR's books, thought they were quite good but still not as good as the cockney king. Which of CR's books does everyone think was his best? I thought Land of Fire, The Watchman and Tenth Man Down were good (TMD was a bit slow starting though). The Hit List made a good change from the usual battle scenes, though I did miss the accounts of actual warfare that CR seems to include in most of his books - I think AM is much better with Nick Stone at the one-man-band thing.

WooHoo! F Troopers and new arrivals reporting in from all corners! VBG!!!

Welcome, Camban...
Glad you're here. 23 since this January (I envy you!) and all it took was that one book! But then that shouldn't surprise me considering how B20 triggered my ongoing "mission"... :o)

Thanks muchly, Eagles Nest...
You were a good five hours ahead of my auto-news search alerts! (whispered to the side: speaking of hours.... What hour is Jack in right now for you? 2nd season, right? Tonight, we're 8am, 3rd season.)

Pssst, DTO...
Over here a sec... up close and personal, for your ears only.... spsws pswps wsssp wsspw sspws pspws wppss spwps.... Fanx! :o)
{{ Uhm... sorry, the rest of you, don't try to crack code -- I used my OTP... :oP }}

Oooh, Dare...
Amazing! You know I could say you took the words right out of my mouth and it would be the truth, and a lie, at the very same time! TZ!!! ;o)

Sheesh, Rex…
Who woulda thunk an oversized duck could be so versatile – truly SF (Surprising Fowl)… ;oP

You’re excused, Ignaty…
At least you’ve given a good accounting for yourself while being MIA for so long.
Cockney King, is it? VBG, especially while listening to AM’s audiotapes!

Thanks for all the good grins today, you guys* !!!

* gender neutral, of course! Would I have it any other way? ;o)

Life would be pretty dull if one never tried anything new for fear of disappointment...

to quote a quote from Frank Collins

"It is better to live one year as a Tiger than a hundred as a sheep"
All the hours you spend reading trashy McN novels would be better spent doing some good in the world.
One person does make a difference - try it, it feels good.

>>By barkingbob   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 01:00)

<< One person does make a difference... >>

True, Barkingbob, very true...

and so we are here... and so are you... :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 06:19)

McN's books trashy? His characters aren't the ones jumping in the sack with every bimbo who makes herself available. ;-)

I will agree with the tiger/sheep thing, though. Tigers are classy, sleek and, as Hobbes likes to mention, they get to wear those cool striped jammies! Claws and teeth make for awesome accessories too. Sheep can be cute, but they have to wear wool all the time, they aren't the brightest of critters, and if they get accessories it's usually a pink bow or something equally lame. *growls* :-)

>>By Dare   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 06:47)

Ha, ha, Dare....Ooooh gawd, your last post is stacked with ammo for opposing forces!!!

"McN's books trashy?" Well queried - Not trashy in my little black book either, just ordinary straight forward writing as spoken (story told)...

Hee. hee: "His characters aren't the ones jumping in the sack with every bimbo who makes herself available. ;-)"

Er um, I'm laughing fit to bust at this line, sorry: his character isn't, granted - I'll say no more...

Definitely a tiger in McNab's tank - purr louder than growl most of the time...

Barkingbob, King of Contradiction - start practising what you preach my boy.

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:10)

Dare, so you wouldn't be overcome with emotion and then..... haha, I'm disappointed in you!

You're right BB, more people should do some good deeds, I work full time and still give up one day in the weekend for charity work. Does this mean I have more rights to read books in my leisuretime? I couldn't recommend volunteering more, you meet some amazing people.

>>By Bethan   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:37)

I have just been informed by Channel 4 (UK) that "The Real Bravo Two Zero" by Michael Asher was aired on 23 April last; I didn't spot it but some of you must have seen this documentary, is it worth watching? Does it contain enlightenment?

CR's sex scenes are pathetic by the way, remind me of 60's Ian Fleming.

>>By camban   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:02)

If there are any service personnel out there, current or ex, there is a contadiction in all of the books which involve Northern Ireland that puzzles me: an ex-squaddie I know did 7 tours over there, he always complained that he and his mates did the lengthy OP business and then were withdrawn as the SAS came in to give the good news. Any info?

>>By camban   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:13)

Who doesn't know my answer to this one?
The Watchman (can't see him surpassing that one...)

Two are twice as nice. I tried it. It felt good.

Have you all lost interest in the subject matter? Seems that this site is now the forum for peurile and obscure graffiti!

Anyone for an actual discussion?

>>By camban   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 15:37)

LOL camban! Love ya, guy, but if you were to read much of the 167 previous pages, you'd see alot of what we post could be described in those terms. ;-)

As far as the NI thing goes, the only book I've read that touches on it is IA. AM's time there was while he was regular army, though he also spent some time there later as SAS. Am I remembering that correctly? Probably alot of what looks like redundancy is more CYA, but there a lot of operations in same area carried out by different groups. Different missions, different goals, right?

>>By Dare   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:17)

Bethan--- I'm sorry to disappoint, but no, I don't think I would be overcome by emotion and then.... ? *tries to pry mind out of gutter with crow bar* Drat! Crowbar broke! No "and then...." with AM anyway, since he's married. ;-)

Now if Nick was more than a bunch of inkblots on paper, I'd certainly make an offer. VVBW!!!

OH wait! Did you mean "... be overcome with emotion and then.... talk about books and his upcoming publication."!?!?!? Oh silly me! Well, yes THAT I would do. :-)

>>By Dare   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:24)

Swedish Reader and myself have been enjoying an in depth, off-board discussion about BOOKS! How odd is that!

>>By camban   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 16:59)

Uhm... that's a bit of a tough one, isn't it, Camban?

How odd are your offboard discussions then? (just joking!)

With you having consumed 23 books since January, I gather your sense of urgency is very strong. And totally understandable! After all, most of us come here every day with that same urgency to share. Where would you like to begin tho... would you like me to reference previous pages where some of your points have already been discussed or would you prefer to begin fresh? Sadly, some things I am unable to address, like the airing of The Real Bravo Two Zero (also discussed here before) since we, in the US, do not have access to these programs...

You lead, Camban, I will happily and gabbily follow suit... :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 17:50)

Ok, I've gone through the first few installments of the B.A.B.E.S. chronicles -- hooey! that's some funny stuff! Well done, well done! Looking forward to the continuing saga....

After a few days off from reading anything other than legalese (*gasp* I know, couldn't be helped), I picked up Lib Day again last night. Good to see that despite the change in writing, some of the humor remains; to wit: "...mopeds buzzing around, sounding like turbo-charged sewing machines." Still can't shake the image....

By the way, I too volunteer and do Good Deeds in my own way. It does feel good, but I don't think it gives me *permission* to read anything I want in my own time.

Cif

No, that's not right. Hmm...
Swif?

Doesn't sound right, either.
Oh yeah --

Jif! ;-)

>>By Jiffer   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:02)

Ooh, sorry -- didn't see AIB's post. Was that too much graffiti?

Here's a question, though not specifically about the books, there's some relevancy:

Could someone please explain to me the use of tracers? (That's as in bullets, not traser, the Go Go Gadget watch). I believe they were explained in IA, but I've gone foggy. I understand they're used to alert your mates to where you're shooting at, but doesn't that also alert the enemy to your position, leaving you vulnerable to attack?

Sorry to be thick about this, but I am a civvie after all....

>>By Jiffer   (Wednesday, 5 May 2004 18:07)

Ooooh, Jiffer!

I feel some excellent techie talk coming on! You simply have no idea what that talk does to me (and thank goodness, you don't!)... ;o)

I did discuss tracers with an ex-Marine fella I work with, but I'd be paraphrasing from faulty memory. I wanted to know how they work, why they glow, are they the same trajectory, etc. I'll let our military experts chime in with the accurate answers tho, and I'll sit back and savour...
