This is what we've all been waiting for! Yes, I've criticised Andy for writing a couple of crap novels , pandering to a brain-dead, uneducated readership with his news articles, oppressing the good Catholics of NI, and being a blister-inducing wanker in general.
But now, he's offering up what Immediate Action and B20 gave us--a look at him and his life in the SAS with the men who served with him, and I think he'll be at his best here.
I've said for years now he should add to the non-fictional accounts of his life, and that his humour comes across best when it's just real stuff he's done.
Now he's giving it to us and I for one can't wait to get my hands on this one.
Andy, you're an interesting and funny bloke when you tell the truth. Thanks for the new book!

Yes, Hank - looking forward to Seven Troop! :-)

Hi BWG, nice to see you back here, happy birthday in advance ;-)

Andy's Tour of Duty starts tomorrow on ITV4, at 10pm. Every Tuesday, repeats on Sunday.
There are 3 episodes:

“Under Siege”
In this episode, the amazing story of the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment who spent four months under constant barrage of mortars, machine guns and small arms in Al Amarah, south of Baghdad. The soldiers themselves tell how they lived under the strain. Plus the US marine sniper who came under siege not only from the enemy forces but also from his fellow marines while perched on top of an oil tank in Iraq.

“Face to Face”
In the streets of Iraq, battles are raging where soldiers have to fight the enemy at very close range, sometimes only a few metres. Soldiers from 1 Royal Horse Artillery tell how nine men, heavily outnumbered, were left trapped inside a house shooting insurgents who were beating at the doors. Plus the story of David Bellavia, an American infantryman who killed insurgents with his bare hands in Fallujah.

“Ambush”
In this episode, what it’s like to come under surprise attack, and how troops combat such tactics. The men of 3 Para tell how they had to fight their way out of a massive Taliban ambush. And in Iraq, a medal-winning United States Marine tells how he ran straight into insurgent machine gun fire to save his men.

Hi all,

Just been catching up on the posts - some interesting reading.

Heard the other day from some "rampant-ruperts" (as they like to call themselves) in which I know. Two had just come back from Credenhill on a detachment thingy-me-bob where interestingly a motion is going through where the minimum age requirement for 22 Reg. is going to be 30 years and above. Not sure how precise this is but it came from Hereford staff so there must be something in it. Personally it makes sense and I clealy understand the logic of thinking.

Of course, being 21 (cough !) I'm clearly still too young for consideration.

Right then, let start the ball rolling with a topic. It probably already has been covered but never mind......

What are the general views on anonymity regarding AM and CR. While both enjoy the trappings of celebrity limelight only one does it publicly - ie showing physical identity. Certainly former Hereford Henry's (as they are sometimes referred to) that I know remain anonymous as to their former occupation for obvious common-sense reasons, ie security etc. However, though AM still conceals his identity in the media,TV etc (understandable), at various book-signings, promotions, security lectures etc he is still in the public eye to a degree and visibly 'on-show'. CR, from the same Regiment, openly reveals his identity in the media, TV etc. For me, I understand it is a matter of personal choice for them but was interested in other views as to what you think.

All's well this end though a bit hot.........getting too old I guess. Some young (and cheeky) whipper-snapper came up to me a while ago and asked how a blind person, when they have gone to sleep, knows when to wake up in the morning !

........silly bugger !

........made me smile though.

Take care all,

Reg

21??? You are so funny ;-)

>>By Ninjawoman   (Wednesday, 11 Jun 2008 23:22)

You forgot Handsome as well Ninjawoman... Well according to you and lyn and Lisle... Well odd thing is and I dont know if this means anything but in last saturday's tv guide in the mirror they showed what looks like a photo of a well known author. In a bit about his new show. so doesnt that defeat the object if it was him.
Have missed my f troop mates by the way.

Hi back too Reg :-)

On anonymity - I only have one view: respect. Whatever they (AM, CR, others) decide one has to respect it. They will have their own personal reasons for doing what they do. I've been in some 'fight' once with a guy somewhere on the net who felt the need to name names and who blew up when I called him by his own name in my reply. The silly bugger gave it away himself but still was very pissed when I did.. what he did. I ask you... how stupid is that. I like my privacy on Internet as much as a lot of others, I don't care for what reason, you have to respect that.
I hope I never failed in that - unintentionally.

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 12 Jun 2008 23:24)

Sheesh, after a good nights sleep I do think I sound awful above. I also smoke cigars, get drunk every Saturday and have s*x in unusual places, I curse at will, burb publicly and I have at least 46 pairs of shoes.

Ok, not all the above is true but I do feel better about myself now.

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 13 Jun 2008 09:56)

Dang, Lynn, I thought you promised to give up cigars... ;oP

>>By am-i-binned   (Saturday, 14 Jun 2008 15:22)

No need to feel any regret, Lynn. My thoughts are exactly with your own. On the net my privacy is important to me and there does not need to be a reason at all.

As for s*x in unusual places..........remember that Saturday under the basha at the top of the Beacons during a torrential downpour covered in mud and drinking JD from the bottle ! (cough !).

Reg

>>By Reginald   (Sunday, 15 Jun 2008 12:21)

OMG Am-I-Binned !!!! :-)))
If I had known all it took were to summarize some imaginary bad habits, to get you back here.. I'd posted them a lot sooner!!! ;-)
Very happy to see you here!! We'll catch up backstage!

Reg, I remember that day very well... half way up I remembered I forgot my cigars and went to get them, when I finally reached the top I found you passed out from the JD. So if you ever wondered who painted the moustache on your face...

:-p

>>By Lynn   (Sunday, 15 Jun 2008 22:43)

Hello Am-I-Binned, hope all is well. it has been too long mate, drop by soon ??

Lynn, thank you for the pic you send me from your trip up-down-up-and down again hill hike. Reg is now my desktop man. Not to worry Reg, you are in good company, I ve had Gerard Butler as that Sparta person before. But I like you moustache better :-)

Later !

Right, before we forget this is about Andy McNab.... Great news again.. you can be the villain in Andy's new book. Or - as Nick Stone usually deals well with the villains - you can name a villain after your worst enemy! Now if I had the money to bid, I could think of some serious candidates ;-)

ANDY MCNAB AUCTIONS VILLAIN NAME !!

Andy McNab fans are being offered the chance to have the villain in his next book named after them.

The SAS soldier-turned-author will auction off the character’s naming rights next week in support of a new charity in memory of legendary Anglo-Irish Polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton.

The Shackleton Foundation will fund projects that embody the adventurer’s spirit and hunger for “calculated risk”.

McNab said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to support this new charity.

“Shackleton has always been a hero of mine, and I think the Foundation’s mission to identify similarly inspiring leaders in today’s world is excellent.”

The lot is expected to raise at least £50,000 when it is sold at a Shackleton Foundation gala dinner on June 25.

Advance bids can be made via the charity’s website: www.shackletonfoundation.org

If you wish to make a written bid in advance of the auction you should email auction@shackletonfoundation.org by 24th June 2008.

Tom Eckersley of the Shackleton Foundation told Greymansland:

Hello there,

Good news for fans of Andy McNab!

The Shackleton Foundation charity are hosting an event on the 25th of June whereby fans of Andy McNab will be able to bid for the rights to name the villain in Andy’s new book.

If you want more information send me an email at tom.eckersley@vancomms.com and I will be more then happy to send you more information.

Regards, Tom Eckersley

Right, before we forget this is about Andy McNab.... Excuse me ??? Forget ??? If only that was possible. And Lynn was doing the Ändy could have been here tour " when he/she/it went up/down/up/down hill thing.

Think up a villain ha? It sounds a bit posh so could I bit on naming a dog in the book ? One nasty bity foaming at the mouth mungrel ? Maybe I can afford the dog-naming ? Oh the names and plots are whirling around in my mind. Better take a tea break and find my Zen again.

Anyone been watching the Tour of Duty series on ITV4?

You can see it here...

http://www.veoh.com/videos/
v14226518HQeAPzbk?autoWatch=true

Download and install the Veoh application to watch the 47 minute programme. It's tedious to install but worth it if you can't get the channel.

Absolutely Lisle, truly great series, amazing footage. Last week featured a patrol of nine ordinary squaddies who were ambushed in an Iraqi town then held off hundreds of AK and RPG toting maniacs for several hours. When they took cover in a building at some point the nutters continually tried to storm the doors until the pile of bodies effectively blocked them out! Utterly mind numbing stupidity and cool professionalism contrasted.

Who dares winalot...

Dogs will lead the way in SAS raids after being parachuted in to spy out rebels for troops, The Sun can reveal. Fearless German Shepherds are being trained to jump from aircraft at 25,000ft wearing their own oxygen masks and strapped to special forces assault teams.

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/
campaigns/our_boys/article1447714.ece

They are being 'trained' to do this? I think the most you could hope for is to train them not to c**p themselves on the way down. Or perhaps they have their own little plastic bags that they have to bury upon landing?

The fact that I find this amusing means age is having an effect on my brain cells.

Winalot is a UK brand of dog food for the non-Brit readers.
