You are absolutely right. It doesn't matter at all; the end result is the same. I think most of us have expressed our sadness in some way on this board regarding the men who lost their lives in that crash. We hold them in the highest esteem.
Admittedly, we sometimes overanalyze things on this board and it takes a fresh voice to snap us out of it. This may be one of those times. Personally, I am very interested in the type of aircraft it was, but that's just me. I'm an aviation nut. If camban chooses to respond to my query, he should probably do it privately via flork.
If I offended anyone, I am sorry.

Good God, ya'll, people have died and we're discussing what version of the same freakin' plane it was and whether or not SAS or their precious equipment was on board. Here's someone who wasn't on yer oh-so-important plane: Marine Lance Cpl. Jason C. Redifer...January 31, 2005. And, no, ladies, he wasn't spec-ops or a "bad-ass" martial artist, so who gives a rat's, right? Sorry Marines aren't stealthy and sexy, they just die a lot. I'm sure they'll start working on being more appealing to you once they get the defending our country part out of the way.

And book discussions is what you do at YSF Pooley?
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 3 Feb 2005 09:07)
Very interesting, Mr. Sprock... but your logic is a eluding my "i" ....
You dislike McNab the man, yet you sought out his board? You dislike McNab's books, yet you worry we're not promoting them? You dislike certain posters here, yet you give out kissie-kissies? You dislike gnooks so much, yet you can't seem to stay away? You dislike the merry gardener, yet you love to attract his attention? You.... well, actually.... you seem to dislike just about everything .....
Well, except for fishing and baiting -- is that special skill leftover from your good ol' SBS days?

Ha! Good ol' Typoman, always has to get "a" word in.... ;o)

Cheers Docjay, your right. Even if you never knew a person that well, just knowing or meeting someone a few times from your HQ and then finding out they have gone puts things into perspective for everyone. Most servicemen, myself included often cannot contemplate that it will ever happen to us. But it does ! Yes, sure kicks you up the ass !

A Bit Andy
3 Feb 2005
BURGLARS coming to terms with the realisation that they can be legally killed as they work are offered some tempting news in the Mirror. A survey by the Post Office claims that as a nation we have £800m secreted in and around our homes. That’s a lot of temptation for housebreakers....(..)
But while householders dangle carrots in front of burglars’ faces, the Sun employs former SAS “war hero” Andy McNab to give everyone a big stick and then teach them how to use it.
In “McNAB A BURGLAR”, the soldier-turned-writer wades in with some “shocking tips designed to injure and subdue an intruder”.
His tips include: surprising your unwanted visitor by hitting them on the head with a rolling pin or mobile phone; grabbing hold of a bottle around the middle and charging at your enemy (“aim for the face or the elbows”); use an open palm when smashing your opponent in the throat; “put your foot on his chest or neck”; and if you must give chase go for the “classic rugby tackle”.

How to McNab a burglar
GULF war hero Andy McNab last night came to the aid of householders — by describing how to deal with burglars SAS-style.
The former sergeant in the Who Dares Wins regiment waded in with some shock-tactic tips designed to injure and subdue intruders.
Andy, 45, gave his hard-hitting advice after law chiefs said the public had the right to attack and even kill burglars.

AIB: (in answering Poole) >You dislike gnooks so much, yet you can't seem to stay away? etc etc
The factor is probably like reading those gossipy Hollywood, celebrity magazines: the stuff you love to hate.... or perhaps like watching a car-crash accident scene.
In any case: on a general note - it would be beneficial if personal bickering was kept to private flork msg's....
>>By ortlieb (Thursday, 3 Feb 2005 18:17)
"the stuff you love to hate" ort.
Big Brother in't got nothing on this place. Miss Piggy (jade) and all. don't reckon a-"i"-b would appreciate list of famous BB sound-a-likes.
"how to deal with burglars SBS-style"

Can any one tell me what kind of Acurracy Internationals sniper rifles there are. Reg, do you use the one type ?
>>By Nomad (Friday, 4 Feb 2005 17:51)
PS - did AM or other SAS guys use them in the 1991 Gulf War.
>>By Nomad (Friday, 4 Feb 2005 17:53)
I like the way we handle break-ins in Texas. In Texas you can shoot a fleeing individual if you believe they have stolen something and shooting them is the only reasonable hope the shooter has of recovering the goods.
I don't know if it is a phase or just getting older, but I don't feel so bad when bad things happen to bad people.

Nomad:
The L96A1 is a "classic" one.
>>By ortlieb (Friday, 4 Feb 2005 19:00)
Hi Nomad,
There are currently a number of Accuracy International variants issued, but regards to UK forces, the following are the types used.
As ortlieb put it, the L96A1 is the classic variant - Accuracy International AWP L96A1. It's a 7.62mm sniper rifle with a 5 & 10-round magazine capacity.
Also there is :
Accuracy International AWM338 L115A1 (A long-range .338/8.59mm lapua magnum sniper rifle)
Accuracy International AW-SP Suppressed (A silenced 7.62mm sniper rifle)
Accuracy International AW L96A1 (Same as the standard 7.62mm L96A1 but with a folding stock)
Accuracy International AW50 (The newest introduction to the sniper range and is a monster .50/12.7mm sniper rifle, primarily issued for counter-vehicle/machinery tasks)
We use the standard 7.62mm L96A1 and also the .338 L115A1 variant where a number has been issued to our detachment. We have also ranged the AW50 for trials, the .50 variant but it is not issued to us as a standard. Muzzle-breaks are somewhat of a necessity with this lady !
It is a safe bet that the gentlemen at Hereford will use all four variants.
Out of interest to the rest, but definitely not lingering on the subject, RAF Lyneham has currently or on the verge of, assigning most of it's dated C-130K-C1 & C-130K-C3 Hercules aircraft to the Reserve 56 Sqn, after their first arrival in 1967.
The current transport types which are part of the Lyneham Transport Wing are the C-130J-30-C4 Hercules & the C-130J-C5 Hercules. However, the "odd" C1 and C3 are still knocking about among the current types : XXIV(24) Sqn, 30 Sqn, 47 Sqn and LXX(70) Sqn. The current types have a crew of two, compared to the C1/C3 which have a crew of four (both excluding the Air Loadmasters). The MOD plan to introduce twenty-five A400M Transport Aircraft in 2007 to possibly begin to replace the Hercules in the future.
Regards,
Reg

Reg and Ort, if that great info re: Accuracy Intl rifles appears on an Andy McNab website sometime soon, it's a coincidence. Promise. Heheheh.
>>By Just Jon (Friday, 4 Feb 2005 21:05)
I know, I know, off topic, sorry.
Hey Reg did you remember the Marine Carlos Hathcock shot the Vietnam General from a mile and a half away with the 50 cal. in its infancy.
Sorry MG you can poof it.
>>By Broker (Saturday, 5 Feb 2005 01:06)
Broker, that shot was from a .50 cal MACHINE GUN--that's what makes it extra cool. Unless I'm mistaken, it was one round through a Browning.
>>By Just Jon (Saturday, 5 Feb 2005 07:19)
Also, I have to say, Andy McNab is just a really cool person, for hell sure cooler than me--and I'm pretty freakin' cool.

Re: .50 cal Hathcock kill: In a video interview (the video and book is available on amazon), Hathcock admits that it was a lucky shot. But hey -- something to tell your grandkids.
