Re-cap page 189 and Nem's comment "well said briwriter, this is a forum for people to discuss andy mcnabs work. both the sas and sbs are excellent soldiers and both now go through the same selection due to the formation of one uksf, so fly girl why come on here arguing that the sbs is better or whatever your point is and quoting a source that is supposedly in the know, when this is about the books"

On the cusp: where is mention of Andy McNab books in 189 - 191?

I didn't say I was Cabin Crew (Air Stewardess). I said flight crew. Flying a Charlie One Three Zero. Come back at me with Andy McNab comment on the Hercules factor. Show us how much you know about the man.

Anyone remember the infamous lines " Those who can do, those who can't talk about it" Well they keep dancing around in my head. It must be all the earlier talk about fakers. All the fake writers and fake SAS books that are talked about here. It has a familiar ring to it doesn't it Nem?

What happened to Andy's teen book "Blood something or other?"

>>By flygirl   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 08:46)

Nem. Go Spank the Monkey a bit more. You will be too busy to think too hard.

For Am-i-binned in case you missed a few.

It has been too quiet on board Flygirl? I hope Nem is wise enough to ignore you.

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 11:47)

first off then i hold the entire RAF as a bunch of air stewardeses (apart from the piolets as they are skilled and not a bunch of fairys). andy mcnab and a C130? haven't a clue what your on about i just read his books he isn't my idle or i don't research him.

How's Colchester doing these days anyone ? Anyone got any gossip from Flagstaff ?

Whatever the view on AM he certainly has the last laugh now - especially money-wise. A worthy and acclaimed writer of which he has earned due to his own merit. On a personal note I do prefer him to CR, who is a tad bit more publicity-seeking. With AM still acknowledging the need for a degree of anonymity, it also enhanced the intrigue of his presence in the publishing world. Anonymity - SOP or part-ploy - I still like the fella. Very professional, you just have to attend one of his security seminars to see that.

Now you've got me green (with envy), Reginald!
Oooh, gives me an idea tho! What if we arrange for AM to give F Troop one of his security seminars? Maybe he has some insider tips on avoiding overt covert assaults... ;o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 15:27)

ok stupid question of the week....What is F-troop? seems they get mentioned a lot on these pages...As a newbie would be nice if someone would explain this, and also when i read the piece on andy mcnab in ink magazine they had a piece from f-troop regarding how fast they could do a lap on a stock motorcycle... MMMM strange, where's mr spock when you need him...PS part two of chris ryan's new series tonight on sky one... oh and only 11 days to series 2 of ultimate force on dvd, well i know some think its, oh whats the word, but i think its pretty cool...

Monkeys? From a certain TA man named Gareth:
“I could catch a monkey. If I was starving I could. I’d make poison darts out of the poison of the deadly frogs. One milligram of that poison can kill a monkey. Or a man. Prick yourself and you’d be dead within a day. Or longer. Different frogs, different times.”
Could McNab do that?

>>By Sick of Cute Screennames   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 19:08)

Would he want to, sick? If he poisons the monkey to catch it, wouldn't he poison himself when he ate it?

There is at least one connection between Andy McNab and monkeys (Google does it again). He is one of the featured reviewers on the cover of The Monkey House, by John Fullerton. He states it is "The most convincing thriller I've read in years."

Anybody read it and care to offer their assessment?

>>By Majorette   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 19:17)

Briwriter, as a really new newbie, I was afraid to ask what FTroop meant, so thanks. I think the F is for Flork, but who knows?
Also, my above posting references a Brit comedy called "The Office"--not meant to be taken seriously

>>By Sick of Cute Screennames   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 20:07)

Please forgive, Briwriter...

The last time F Troop was explained was on pg 125.... and read as follows:

An offboard question was asked: "What does the F stand for in F Troop?" So I apologize to our newer posters; I'm afraid we've gotten complacent and take this reference for granted anymore.

We became F Troop way, way back (pg 4) -- at Lynn's suggestion. At the time, there seemed to be only four active chatters (buddy, Lynn, Paul R and a-i-b), so Lynn quipped that we could be Air, Boat, Mobility and Mountain and call ourselves F Troop.

F Troop is a direct reference to IA, Chapter 19, when AM was in Belize in July 1980:

"Britain had kept a small garrison in Belize ever since as a permanent deterrent against incursions, and we were going there as part of that force. ... The British presence amounted to something like an infantry battalion plus all the support -- Harrier jump jets, artillery, the lot. And part of that was an outfit called F Company, basically a dozen Regiment and SBS blokes. It had quickly been renamed F Troop after the comedy series about a US cavalry unit in the Wild West, manned by a load of bumbling old idiots."

As to the INK and F Troop -- THAT'S US!!! -- reference pgs. 97 thru 99 for all the sorted details! ;o)

TZ, SoCS.... cross-posting with you!

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 20:14)

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 21:24)

Pilot. That's me. A C130 Hercules.

Nemesis was a book. It was written by a fake SAS man. According to MoD.

Security seminars Reg. Well I'll be damned. Small world.

>>By flygirl   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 22:04)

Fairies!? McNab's top of the tree, boyo.
Hanging from the chandeliers with the Red Falcons cuts a dash too.

>>By flygirl   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 22:15)

that was the nemesis file and nothing to do with my user name. oh a pilot, yeh ok so give us some of your pilot type knowledge, whats the difference between one rigged for para drops and one rigged for something else?

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 23:20)

don't take too long on google

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Thursday, 5 Aug 2004 23:34)

fuck it i'm too bored of this shit, can't be bothered back to literature

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 00:34)

Nemesis--you Brits really have us beat as far as t.v. comedy goes, no doubt about it.
I was wondering if you're familiar at all with U.S. military kit and how you think it compares to the British equivalent. I think I recall McNab saying we've got better "nosh rods," but what about the rest--boots, bergen, etc.? Thanks in advance.

>>By Sick of Cute Screennames   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 00:49)

i think a lot of the U.S kit is better as far technology reliant kit, but i prefer our bergans and webbing, but i did buy a pair of the u.s issue desert boots, which was money well spent. also i found that the U.S marines (they are the last i worked with) had more kit availible to them where we have to fight to get anything from nvgs to heavy machine guns. most of it is a "gucci" factor though if it's shiny you want it.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:22)

and mre's are great, bulky but great especially the heater, although it polutes the water you use to activate it so there goes the brew factor.

>>By Nemesis2842004   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:23)

i saw the cover on amazon, for andy's new book, it is a bit more, mmm artistic. its looks like a 50's poster for a film noir...
But looking forward to it, here's a question now i'm told i'm a member of F-Troop, and apart from when i was in cubs i have never been part of a troop...
Ok Question waffling a bit, whats your favourite audio cd mcnab book.....
thanks for all the messages by the way, your the greatest bunch of bookworms going, and i'm glad to be one of you...
Ok back to working on my book, and trying to wtach the re-run of cold feet, think i'm a bit of a pete lol hahahaha

>>By briwriter   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:42)

PS for those who are not british, and have no idea what cold feet is, well its a bit like friends but funnier, sadder and well simply better.....yes we make the best tv in the world.

>>By briwriter   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:49)

woah there calm on down people.

.. Flygirl... nemesis ! whats the score here!! Flygirl greatest respect to you... I've just got my pilots license but obviously not a patch on your flying skills, however you need to take a happy pill to lighten up.... aircrew you maybe but to us army types you'll always be brylcreamed flyboys (regardless of gender) just as the navy all like it up them.... interservice rivalry, thats all it is...I don't know nem's particular unit, he maybe a scaley back (signalller) or a squigglybadge/z head (REME.. Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers.... or royal engineering made easy) he may even, god forbid, be a member of the rather large corps (RLC :royal logistics corps) but even that's just friendly rivalry from and ex sapper (HURRAH for the CRE!!! ....sang twice)

lighten up people passion about what one likes and believes in is good... but lets not degenerate into name slagging each other off

and Reg my monkey was never naughty enough to require a spanking.... I choked that bastard chicken a few times though!!!

>>By geo   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:52)

I have been pondering this question, I was wondering since possibly the way Andy's book are written and how characters are often dropped, would there be a time when Nick Stone would maybe meet his waterloo, hope not.... And if so , would we get a new character.

>>By briwriter   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:53)

PS. I was in Belize in 85 and all F-troop did was hog the entire left hand end of the swimming pool at APC, there was me with my regulation sun tan.. and they lay around all day soaking up the rays!!!

>>By geo   (Friday, 6 Aug 2004 01:55)

a swimming pool and a sun tan, oh boy sounds nice
