I seem to recall they lost a few boats and mountains of kit to the Iranians recently. Lucky they have us tame tax payers to pick up the tab and buy them more shiny new toys.

The UK is the place to be for good advice.
Here's the latest from the government in our Prepare for Emergencies leaflet to save us all!
"If a bomb goes off in your building look for the safest way out"
As opposed to? I can't believe someone was paid a salary to write that.....
Another aside hear the american's are in trouble for buying knock-off AK47's instead of the real thing, I thought that only applied to Rolex's.
Camban have you ever read a soldier's song that's worth a look too - falklands memories from an ex-para. He writes in the same kind of style as our man McNab.

Thanks Beth, yet another one to check out! Have been doing just that earlier, and I am confused by the apparent conflict between Once a Pilgrim and one I found, Unscathed by Major Phil Ashby who says HE led all the people from Sierra Leone to safety, not Will Scully, so, is this the beginning of another B20 type argument? I make this the fifth version of this event to become a book, we need a referee.
>>By camban (Thursday, 29 Jul 2004 15:49)
Beth, can you check that title please? or name the author, can't find it anywhere.

Interesting article, Lynn. But, sheesh!, is it me or is that article totally inappropriate? I know I'm myopic when it comes to the SAS (mainly due to my reading selections so far) but to publicly broadcast such negative statements struck me as entirely WRONG. What possible benefit could such revelations reap?!? I suppose it was intended to reinforce the idea of SAS superiority, but, in fact, it had the exact opposite impact on me, demonstrating absolute lack of judicious discretion. Very disappointing, very disillusioning.

AMID the welter of changes being proposed by the Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, last week, was the welcome news that the role and size of special forces are to be expanded.
Indeed, at the weekend it was further revealed by one newspaper that an entirely new 600-strong special forces regiment is to be created.
Apparently, this new regiment would be geared to infiltrating Islamic terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda. Volunteers for it, both male and female, would be taken from all three branches of the armed services.
Though it is hard to determine how much judicious leaking or spin was involved in this article, priority is to be given to those of Middle Eastern or Mediterranean appearance, as well as Muslims and members of ethnic minorities.
Hopefully, however, this will be the last we hear of this new unit, as the less said about its almost certainly top-secret work the better.

The new Series of Ultimate Force should be on T.V soon as the Season 2 DVD is out in a few weeks and they are both meant to coincide.

Thanks Briwriter, checked out Midnight in Some Burning Town, and had to have it! And Beth, A Soldiers Song, sounds good, had to have that too (this is getting out of control, haven't read any of my last order yet, and my basket bulgeth once again, is there any medication available?)
Loved the tone of Ken's second book Marijuana Time: Join the Army, see the world, Meet Interesting People, and Smoke all Their Dope, bought that too. Reminds me of the soldierly ironic saying: join the Army, see the world, meet interesting people, and kill them. Or, I joined the Navy to see the world, what did I see? I saw the sea.
And Geo, Once a Pilgrim? wow, what a story! big 'nads indeed! The US Navy and Marines did a brilliant job too, the total antithesis of Black Hawk Down. Also, my previous comments about the Sierra Leone stories seem to be wide of the mark, whereas Op Barras and Op Certain Death are about the same incident (just started the latter) the other stories would seem to be about different escape situations, will see.
If anyone else has Black Water on order, I got an email from Amazon yesterday confirming the publication date as 4 November, they previously gave me a date of 20 July; disappointing that.
>>By camban (Friday, 30 Jul 2004 13:18)
click click C. that would be Deep Black? please confirm - over
>>By Lynn (Friday, 30 Jul 2004 14:18)
Well done Lynn, you have passed that part of Selection! It was a test you see, I'm not really a silly old fool. Andy told me in bed this morning that Black Water is to be his next release, it's all about some SBS men who ran away.
>>By camban (Friday, 30 Jul 2004 15:49)

Lynn : interesting article about the SBS, but would be even more interesting knowing what they have to say in their defence, as the SAS have started this hurly-burly .

Further to Beth's bit about the government Prepare for Emergencies leaflet above...
From HM Department of Vague Paranoia http://www.preparingforemergencies.co.uk/
Packed full of useful information... If you are involved in any emergency it is important to: *Run like hell, particularly if you caused the emergency. *Trample all others in your desperate attempt to escape. *Loot on the way out.
Additional advice there regarding alien invasion and zombie attack (think the government forgot those crucial scenarios...)
For those who don't think we in the U.K. are taking things seriously enough <sigh> please read the Terms & Conditons page.
Apologies for absence. Been behind closed doors all week. Ta for birthday fishes!!

I guess I’ll tell my story. I “discovered” AM at an airport while traveling for work. I was reading spy/SF fiction books for the sheer escapism (I was really hating the job). First I was struck by the quality of his writing. His writing reminded me of Ernest Hemingway with his direct, gritty style of narrative. Then as I got further into the book his description of certain isolated scenes struck a chord with me. They were described much as I think of them. After reading so much of how poor ol’ Nick Stone took a beating and just kept going, I didn’t hate my job so much. I started thinking of my business trips as “missions”. In my job I usually fly to some town, find some out of the way place, track down the proper person or persons and kill them (oops, I mean have a meeting with them). The first pay off, I actually became much better at my job. The second was I had more patience for the little things and actually enjoyed some parts. Remember “Time spent on recon is never wasted”. The third BIG pay off was that over the last year and a half I’ve actually avoided being mugged twice (certainly beaten and possibly killed). I am much more situationally aware.
I will tell you what a nut I’ve become. When Dark Winter came out I could not find it in the US so I ordered it from the UK and had it expressed here. A little more money for a book than I’m used to paying. I will probably do the same for Deep Black.

Great post BadTime, I enjoyed it. And eerrr... you may be a nut everywhere else but here you just fit in ;o)

Gosh. This particular message board does fly the SAS flag aka McNab colours doesn't it. I'm a bit sceptical of so much praise of one man but maybe I've become a little more swayed toward an open mind on special forces news. I think I am more an SBS fan myself after reading some very interesting articles on another web site.
I thought you might like to read some of what I saw. SBS senior NCO awarded the American Congressional Medal of Honour, the equivalent of the Victoria Cross. The British Special Boat Service commando led the rescue of a CIA officer from an Afghan prison revolt. It was the first time the medal has been awarded to a living foreigner. The Queen will have to give permission for the SBS soldier to wear it.
The SBS officer led a patrol of half-a-dozen SBS commandos who rescued a member of the CIA's special activities section from the fort at Qala-i-Jangi near Mazar-i-Sharif. The fort was holding 500 al-Qa'eda and Taliban prisoners, many of whom had not been searched and were still armed.
I believe the VC eluded Mr McNab.
>>By flygirl (Saturday, 31 Jul 2004 22:35)
sorry, flygirl... it might be me, but your last line "VC"??? please elaborate..
>>By Shoot-To-Kill (Saturday, 31 Jul 2004 23:56)
the vc is really only awarded posthumusley excuse the spelling, so since he's alive that is not suprising and the americans give out medals as if they were bars of chocalate ( ouch i broke a finger i must be due a purple star ) and so on.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Sunday, 1 Aug 2004 01:26)
and also there is no sbs/sas thing anymore it's just uksf
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Sunday, 1 Aug 2004 01:27)
Well I was wondering how long it would take before SBS-defenders would climb the barricades.
>>By Lynn (Sunday, 1 Aug 2004 12:06)
Uh 'mmm Nemesis, the Victoria Cross has and is awarded to living personnel. As I see it from ex WRAF personnel viewpoint not as reader of special forces fiction and exagerated bibliographies. Better add I've came into contact with special forces in my former capacity as flight personnel.
Hello Lynn. I wouldn't call myself an SBS defender but I will wear the cap if it pleases you. I did however find them to be less gung-ho and less boastful all round on and off base.
