Re: SBS vs. SAS, if someone in the Regiment asked me (which they wouldn't), I'd say they're the best, and vice-versa for Royal Marines. I for one have a strong sense of self-preservation. As a computer nerd, I 've noticed that AM often discusses "hacking," etc, (Remote Control and Firewall come to mind), and I wonder if anyone knows what SAS operators are taught about computers. Supposing they wanted computer files from non-networked boxes, they would either have to take a hacker with them (which presents obvious difficulties), remove the hard drive (which would be hard if the target had 40-50 identical computers, any of which could contain the needed info), or they could be trained enough to recognize the operating system in use and select the proper methods or software (easily transported) to get what they wanted. Anyone know anything about this? Or care to speculate? Also, since my screenname is so long, I'll happily answer to the (accurate) abbreviation "Sick." :)

easy on nemesis old fella, flygirl is entitled to her opinions and in this democratic world we have the right to air these views publicaly (dont know if I spelt that right), I spent a fair while in green skin (pull up a sandbag, whilst I swing the ol lantern) and I came across a few SF types, now if you include paras and marines then loads of SF types... and in my opinion the airborne guys on the whole do think that they are better than anyone else, and they certainly voiced that opinion..the marines had the same opinion but didn't feel the need to voice it.
They all had my respect for the determination and abilities to pass thier respective courses and gain their berets, but on the whole the guys with the dettol badge had my respect as decent blokes, the guys with 'my little pony' on the sweatshirt's that they never took off were basically knobbers... not all of them obviously and in the latter stages of my career as the quality of recriuts generally declined then the younger elements of both groups tended to be dickheads...
Incidentally 3 mates of mine was on selection in 98 and 'Dinger' from B20 was DS staff, it was felt by the candidates that this guy was way too far up his own fundamental orifice.

Why not Cute? I'm a total computter nitwit so.... sorry
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 22:33)
Can't even spell computter ;o)
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 22:34)
PS I mentioned airborne above because this is the major group that SAS candidates come from, as most people know anyway...
>>By geo (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 22:38)
Lynn--Why not Cute? I guess you didn't look at my picture. Also, while I love to be referred to as "cute" by women, I'd just as soon not have the guys call me that. Anyone have any thoughts on the suggested vast increase in the number of U.S. Special Forces? I've heard that when they decided to greatly increase the number of SEALS, they had to make qualifying easier to achieve their goals. Do the British have similar plans?
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 22:58)
With regards to the VC it was the sappers, who won the most, 35, 'HURRAH for the CRE' or was that MRE? not sure
>>By geo (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:08)
Errr.... Geo?
Could this lowly Yank civvy sneak a peek at your Brit Army/Military Lingo Handbook? I love the soldiery sound but I'm worried about getting lost in the translation....
green skin - uniform? swing the ol lantern - take main stage and tell story? dettol badge - no idea whatsoever! 'my little pony' - the winged Pegasus - British Airborne?
Note: (*said with idjit grin on face*) knobbers/dickheads - no translation necessary (the same in both worlds) -- LOL!

am-i-binned--check out the logo of the Dettol brand of antiseptic products.
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:22)
(*pitiful puppy eyes peering at Geo over the rim of the white message divider lines*)
Please, Sir, I'd like some more.
Two to be exact.... Sappers? CRE?
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:24)
geo fair point airborne trained soldiers do think high of themselves but thats part of it as everyone else is hats, it's just one of those things. but my point was why did she come in here spouting off about some booty getting the congressional medal of honor when you know yanks get medals for doing there shoe laces up. yeh your correct with most of the sas coming from para reg or the engineers that is the main pool they get volunteers from. but pf plt are getting half sf wage from next year so it could drop.
sick: there is a sqn of sas sigs troop and they are trained in IT TECHNIQUES, so hope that answers your question.
not sure about the royal engineers having the most vcs though, i think if memory recalls it's some northern infantry regt, the welsh borderers do have a lot of vcs and they are also in the royal engineers pool as well, due to rorks drift and islawahnda (excuse spelling).
and als sick no the british military will not drop it's standards for a increase in manpower, for the simple reason one recruit of the expected caliber is better than six that isn't. and aib your on the money with that anglo/american translation.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:26)
Sappers are like our engineers, I believe.
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:26)
yes sick they are
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:29)
Nemesis--thanks for answering my IT question. And yes, it seems to me the British military values quality over quantity a bit more than we do in the States.
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:29)
BTW, was I right about Dettol?
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:30)
dettol badge i believe he is refering to the commando dagger.http://www.combat-online.com/marines.htm see link provided it does look similar to the dettol bottle pic
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:33)
Er.... sorry AIB, the Sappers are the Corps of Royal Engineers, hence CRE ('Hurrah for the CRE' is supposedly the corps song, never did learn it in 17 years..... never will)
The dettol badge is a black arc shaped badge with the red dagger of the commandos superimposed, worn by 'other arms' ie. not Royal Marines on the sleeve of their uniform. My liitle pony is as as you surmised squire (9 para sqn RE hated it when we used to sing the ditty from the kiddies show)
>>By geo (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:35)
Errr... oooookay, SoCS -- followed instructions to the letter. Fanx.
So, Geo, are "the guys with the dettol badges" the ones who get down, get dirty, and get damaged (vs those in the high, clean, safe sky)?
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:37)
Nemesis--thanks for the link. Looks like a great site.
>>By Sick of Cute Screennames (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:38)
LOL!!! I have to remember to refresh before I post obviously!!! What an idjit!
>>By am-i-binned (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:38)
9 para are a good bunch of guys geo, i've always had fun on the piss with them anyway.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:39)
did you ever serve at 36 geo one of my favourite postings and a good bunch of guys, my brothers up at ripon now.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:41)
sick you have a lot bigger army though so it's not so much quality over quantity, but you have a section for every possible out come where as we have four.
>>By Nemesis2842004 (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:43)
I didn't refresh the bloody page before answering AIB hence now I've refreshed and everyone answered for me....
Nemesis, technically speaking the RE hold the most VC's but with the RE's having had dozens of regiments this does inflate the figures it was the lancashire fusiliers who won the most as an individual regiment. check out http://www.victoriacross.net/force.asp, the british army won 818 VC's the Indian Army, from the good old days of slaughtering natives armed with sharpened guava halves, won 143 The Navy, god bless them and all who sail, in them won 83.
excuse the punctuation and poor grammar here, I want to type this fast so that I look like a goody two shoes before someone else answers the question.... actually was there a question here?
and I'm sorry but I think the standards of the British army have dropped, we had guys whom were real oxygen theives, when I was an instructor, they should never have got through basic... however instructors at basic training were told they would be sorted out in secondary training (combat engineers, trade training etc) we weren't allowed to bin anybody because they would be sorted out in their regiments....in the regiments you cant shout at anyone without them bursting into tears....
However, my elder brother said standards dropped when I joined, my even elder brother said the same when my elder brother joined.... my dad said we were all poofs compared to his day.... how far shall I go??
>>By geo (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:50)
Ripon was my first posting, excellent place we had 'strat reserve' back then so you did get to travel the world and not just home falklands home exercise, falklands etc... (later on... home bosnia, bosnia trg, bosnia , exercise home, and i suspect now it will be gulf, gulf, trg exercise gulf)
>>By geo (Tuesday, 3 Aug 2004 23:55)
