Mmm..Rose... never ever had Pimms in my time with the MoD...certainly been to a few good parties (although not thrown by officers..lol)..but did regularly get invited to officer-type parties (not really my scene though) hence I declined all but once.
Yeah...saw lots of labradors, but only ever had very close encounters with spaniels..odd that....apart from german shepherds in NI. One was very friendly and liked cupcakes.
Devonwren - I remember the whiskey well..but not alot after it.
Nope - never did get to skid run. Nearly got mowed down by a learner tank driver on one occasion, and drove onto a firing range accidentally another time nearly squashing several troops... oops... Some git had removed the red flags ...(well, that's my story..)

Hi all, only me, Reginald.

I agree devonwren, F1, F2 etc are to do with roller-locked auto's, there's a good website describing it in detail (HK site), namely the G3. I must admit though I have only used these in training many years ago. Good and reliable (as all HK's are) but not the issue for myself or colleagues in the past.

However, DF1, 2 tests etc is definitely bollocks to do with a game, not ballistics. On the subject, I have a little thing for ballistics and rounds.........we should have a chat about that !

"Strange how Londoners have a natural inbred capacity to impersonate convincingly and apply language lilt as required" I hope that doesn't refer to me, mind you if it does, your entitled to your own opinion. It's no worries for me, I'm just an ordinary soldier with nothing to prove (certainly after nearly 22 years), writing this at Camp as I speak (and yes, still with the young whipper-snapper - a common phrase for all of us here and who know us).

I wonder if your description applies elsewhere, my dear ?

What NO PIMMS, you haven't lived til you spend a summer evening on Salisbury Plain watching the Beating of the Retreat (always ask the only Yank officer in attendence what it is all about, cos the Brits dont know, and dont care, as long as there is free booze, but in order to fit in the Yank will have done hours of copious research so that he can discuss this age old tradition and not feel left out, ha!!Research will always catch you out!)
You get to sit and watch this spectacle while Reginald's whippersnappers attend to your every need, with knee rugs and Pimms by the bucket. ho hum, what ever happened to the empire? Oh yes, Dubya is after it now.
Then, of course, to cope with the ensuing hangover, you go to watch the polo a few hours after and have lots of G and Ts with lunch, God Bless the English Taxpayer, life would have been so boring without your generous contributions!

Surprised Reg, you only picked out "roller-locked autos" in ref to web site you located...
In actual fact the F * list I posted pretty much applies to all weaponry inclusive missiles on projectory and velocity...

It helps the unmilitary-minded souls here to understand usage/technical data by posting urls...Needless to say I couldn't locate the site you found for "roller-locked auto", but did find this one which might go someway to helping readers know what SF guys are using in any one book, and of course, used in theatres of real-life action...

http://world.guns.ru/sniper/sn00-e.htm

There is select box top LH corner of above URL.

No Reg, not referring to you as Cockney lad, was pointing out how good AM is at getting through doors and passing himself off as kosher in city slicker suit when needs must !!

TG, I don't know anyone who dropped into NI and didn't do The Skid Run: it was an ongoing hazard...

Anyhow, it Valentine's night and time to think about bubbly water, pampering hair, little black frocks, and warpaint!!!

Maybe not.

~~Anyhow, it Valentine's night and time to think about bubbly water, pampering hair, little black frocks, and warpaint!!!

Im disappointed DW, thought you were more "out of the box " type person than this, all that research isn't doing you any good.
I'm off to the airport, grabbing a few days on the Piste at Smugglers Notch, with an ex B squadron lassie. Dont do anything too scary while I'm away.

Some info for your weapon-freaks out there:

Links to official HK-sites (HK = Heckler & Koch):

http://www.heckler-koch.de/
http://www.hk-usa.com

Most of the guys in here are by now familiar with the 9mm MP5, which is the preferred CQB-weapon by most law-enforcement and military CT-units. The MP5 is H&K-made, and this is also the case for the USP-pistol (Kev's pistol that NS "borrowed" in Remote Control), the G-3 etc. etc. Judging from pictures, H&K's GMG is very similar to the 40mm Mk-19 grenade-launcher that was mounted on several of the Regiment's Land Rover's in GW1, but I'm 100% sure.

The G-3 packs a good recoil punch (7.62 mm), but it's not worse than any regular 12-gauge shotgun. The G-3 is still the standard service weapon in Norway (the only NATO-country left that still has a 7.62 mm calibre in their service weapons -- everybody else uses the smaller 5.56 mm), but it's finally being replaced. It'll most likely be replaced by either H&K's G-36 or Diemaco's C-series (modernised version of the M-16 family).

Happy shootin' !

Oops... typo-dude is out there again. Should spell "but I'm NOT 100% sure..."

>>By ortlieb   (Saturday, 14 Feb 2004 18:19)

Damn, Boy!
I love the smell of cordite in the morning! :o)
[Whispered: but it's "fire" -- we shoot things, we fire weapons...vbg! vbw!]

First coat on, nails drying, nothing better to do at the mo other than press keys!!

However, dangle the bait and someone will bite!!!

I'm sure the boarders appreciate it Geist and, Orty's expertise filled in nicely!!

C'mon Rose, Researcher's cloak comes in handy, but research is not and never was in my repertoire.....Sometimes I felt like a bleeding tabloid journalidt.....damn, gotta go, cell phone buzzing...

Is it just me, or does Andy McNab sound just like David Beckham ??

>>By ortlieb   (Saturday, 14 Feb 2004 19:36)

Uhm...dunno, Ortlieb...

Might be just you who sounds like David Beckham, but maybe AM sounds like him too. Or maybe David Beckham sounds just like you, and you sound like AM, or ... ouch! my head hurts now... :o\

[Whispered: Who's David Beckham?]

>>By am-i-binned   (Saturday, 14 Feb 2004 19:49)

Ortlieb, I'm gonna give you the hat for even mentioning them in the same breath!!!! David Beckham plays great soccer, I have no idea how AM plays soccer but if he plays well that's the only comparison I'd draw. Oooh, and they're both from the UK. Both male. But if AM wears earrings and nail polish, someone please tell me now - and I'm off. (oh boy - that a way to get rid of me or what..)

>>By Lynn   (Sunday, 15 Feb 2004 00:29)

See Geist's input : www.hkpro.com/technical.htm

Concerning roller-locking system (delayed blow-back), of particular note to most HK models, as we know.

I only used the term roller locked autos because that's exactly what collectively such firearms using this operating system are called. The term is not the website title.

All this mention of Pimms....can't stand the stuff personally. Hey, devonwren, do you ever wet your whiskers with Guinness !

>>By Reginald   (Sunday, 15 Feb 2004 14:32)

Lynn:

Fetch those cutton Q-tips! Operative phrase being "sound like", not "equivelant to DB in any imaginable way possible".

I've listened to audio-excerpts from the audio-book versions of B20 (where AM is the narrator), and his voice, accent and tone is very similar to that of David Beckham.

am-i-binned (and all those yanks in here who doesn't pay that much attention to European football):
David Beckham is the former shining football (soccer) star of Manchester United.
He now plays for Real Madrid, and he's the hubby to former Spice Girls-member "Posh Spice" Victoria Beckham (maiden name Adams).

>>By ortlieb   (Sunday, 15 Feb 2004 18:56)

Sigh Ortie - still hat for you !! I was past 'sound' - like in: they don't sound like each other, and further they don't have anything in common.
Beckham is in his own way kind of cute (by looks) BUT HE SHOULD NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH, sincerest apologies to any Beckham fans.
And since I'm providing the girlie stuff here: I like AM's voice !!!!

>>By Lynn   (Sunday, 15 Feb 2004 22:15)

Backing Lynn, on Beckham should keep his gob shut as much as possible!!

Such a pity, such beauty, and the voice!!!!!!!! A Sarong suits him, admirably....

Yeah, AM has a London twang, but a far more neutral/level tone (less East/South London and more Kentish as happens with some when they move away from roots), whereas Beckham's is a couple of octaves higher (sounds like a choir boy) voice yet to break, and a true Essex boy...

>>By devonwren   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 10:29)

I have to defend Mr Beckham, he too moved away from his roots, but has stayed true. What you see and hear, is what you get. No pretence, just natural, fun loving and a family man.
Compared to AM, I know which one is happier and more fulfilled. So he sounds young, if only women could keep the same quality, they tend to sound like bitter, twisted old witches after the age of 30 and full of deceit.

>>By stevemitch   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 12:28)

< if only women could keep the same quality, they tend to sound like bitter, twisted old witches after the age of 30 and full of deceit.

Aaah, would it be the sound of experience???

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 12:38)

but, of course, isn't everything?

>>By stevemitch   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 12:51)

Welcome, stevemitch....

Sheesh! Certainly hope your observation is not based on anything said here of late!

(Smack!) Sorry, sarcasm seepage.... :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 12:58)

Quick question for UKers....

Was there another installment of Mike Coburn's Soldier Five excerpts in the Sunday Mail?

>>By am-i-binned   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 13:03)

I've got a question too: have read the interview Majorette offered.

Anyone know which Teletubbie is AM's favorite??

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 16:25)

well, if you guys think he sounds like a choir boy, who wears a sarong and nail polish, I guess it must be the one with the handbag

>>By stevemitch   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 16:30)

< if you guys think
Oh boy - you were eager to jump on this one!
But please read again: Most of us said he was NOTHING like that.

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 17:00)

Welcome SM, tempting nic...

As the saying goes, one knicker napper can always spot another, but which one sports the hole for the ring? Case of close-up frisk and look-see first before workout!...Beckham Vs AM (?)....Nah, line up both, we'll allow AM a head-start on the physical based on age difference...

Maybe your experience SM, of bitter and twisted women after 30 has something to do with the fact that by then the innocent have wised up to deceptive practices!

>>By devonwren   (Monday, 16 Feb 2004 17:11)

Lynn, I think I must be wearing a Dutch hat, (can't speak the lingo) because SM's 1 2 3 posts have "Bl**dy" confused me.

Did SM defend Beckham in one breath, come on side with AM the next, (plus side-kick women over 30), and then dribble down middle field and a goal kick with AM offside?
