Attention, Fellow Yanks...

Majorette gave me a heads up re: "Spymaster" which airs twice on Tuesday nights on TLC (The Learning Channel). I missed the first episode (bummer!) but very glad I got to see last night's.
--------

Spymaster

We are looking for people to take part in a major new, high-octane television series. You need quick wits and nerves of steel, you must be over 21 and physically fit.
We will be auditioning in Los Angeles, Houston, Washington D.C. and Chicago. But your first mission is to send us your details.

We require:
Name, address, daytime phone number [no problem! want my fingerprints too?]
Your Age [uhm... not a problem for me but maybe for you -- let me surprise you!]
Your Occupation [you mean my "mission"?]
Your interests and hobbies [uhm... you mean my "mission"?]
Indication of your level of physical fitness [uhm... well, the spirit is willing!!!]
A few lines on why we should choose you [dotted or squiggley? or cuz I'm begging!]Include a recent photo [hmm... the "smoke & mirrors" one or me in black kit?]
Indicate which audition venue is best for you [you just set up the RV, I'll be there!]

why is this posted on a Literature website? Have you lost the plot?

>>By barkingbob   (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 16:33)

Hi again, Barkingbob...

Actually, no, I don't think I've lost the plot. The Spymaster program demonstrates (albeit on a very civvie level) the type of training which Delta, CIA, Special Forces, etc. receive. Given that many of F Troop are interested in the broader SF picture, Spymaster has relevance here, particularly for us Yanks, who’ve been missing out on the various SAS programs available in the UK/Europe (which have been discussed here). :o)

>>By borisette   (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 19:26)

(Ooops! I was too impatient, Bo; I preordered already...)

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 19:34)

Wow, lots to be found on deep black, even other books/authors

Deep Black by William E. Burrows

Deep Black by Robb Magley

Deep Black The CIA's Secret Drug Wars

And:
"If I'm on one of these missions that's deep, deep black, you can safely bet few, if any, in Congress -- maybe not even the secretary of defense -- knows about what the hell I'm doing," says a black operative

But most likely Deep Black is just the colour of my hair.

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 7 Apr 2004 20:04)

Oh great! A new AM book!!! But waiting until November is going to be a pain!

LOL Lynn--

Black is the color of my true love's hair--
but her tresses are red as a rose

Black is the color of my love's true hair--
but only her hairdresser know's
Does she or doesn't she?
Only her hairdresser knows!

Re Deep Black: "Stealth Technology" in several formats...Internet Stealth technology (Firewall etc) though reverse projection technique in regards DB = Sophisticated Trojan Horse used buy intelligence agencies.

Deep Black also term used in "Psychology circles" i.e. depressin/suicide...

Not sure I'm supposed to be giving feedback here...Shed technology!

>>By devonwren   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 10:29)

Meant to say (in mega rush today) that I used Trojan Horse as example because most everyone knows how it works: Virtual Spy in Your Computer, but there are now huge variations in spy technology including one programme that installs auto connect and can hear you talking offline if you have a microphone installed for live Internet phone-chat: so long as your computer is hitched to communication system (broadband) even when you think it is switched off, and lots of Andy McNab's (metal heads) can roam around your computer and you don't know they are there...

Do have fun today...I'm going offline and disconnecting all portals same as I do each time I go offline...Remember the old black & White wartime movies with resistance operators sending messages and German's tracking the airwaves, well think seconds detection not hours with steal technology.

>>By devonwren   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 10:40)

Hmmm steal techno, good job I don't have broadband, cause if anyone would be listening in into my pc, they'd be litteraly *******ed, oooops there goes one (burb), cause I'm always eating ......and drinking, not very ladylike am I.

Anyone knows this book : The good guys wear black
by Steve Collins

Synopsis
In his four years with S019, the Metropolitan Police Special Firearms Wing, Steve Collins has been in over a thousand contacts: that is gun battles, with Yardies; IRA gunmen; East End gangsters, such as the notorious Arifs and their hitmen; drug smugglers from South America and elsewhere; and lone gunmen who have simply gone berserk. A judge commending the bravery of Steve's team said, "If only the public knew the calibre of the men that protect them". S019 protects us from chaos and violence London. These groups are expert in firearms operations in an urban environment - the SAS come to them for training. Collins gives the inside story of these operations, which we might otherwise only get to hear about when they make the headlines.

>I preordered already...

Huh? How d'ya do that?
When I go to pre-order from the janeriks website it takes me to The Increment by CR. Is this a crafty move to up pre-sales by the man in gold hotpants? (neat move Mr Ryan, if that's the case!!)

>>By bikergirl   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 15:13)

Hi, Bikergirl...
Pre-ordered thru Amazon.uk... :o)

Re: Name game

Wondering about "Deep Black" title, since another one of my favourites already has a book out with that same title: Stephen Coonts. And it's a small world too cuz Coonts is the one quoted as saying: "McNab is the best suspense thriller writer to put pen to paper since Alistair MacLean. Remote Control is superb!" on AM's book covers.

A synopsis of Coonts' Deep Black includes: "A spy plane gathering data on a new Russian weapon is blown out of the sky by a mysterious MiG. Is it an accident or the start of the next world war? One U.S. agency has what it takes to find out-the National Security Agency and its covert operations team: DEEP BLACK."

>>By am-i-binned   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 16:10)

Deep black is an operation allright.. to make noise on this board again, hahaha.

>>By Lynn   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 16:35)

Ok....I just finished Dark Winter and I have to say...I don't know how Deep Black can go on after that DW. I am just so numb from the ending. I had a hard time putting it down from start to finish. LD well I wasn't so excited about it. It was very very slow to me. I've read all his book so far even the one by his ex-wife, "Married to the SAS". That was interesting as well. I will have to get on to Amazon uk and check out the new book coming. Here in the USA Andy doesn't even have DW out yet on Amazon. Has anyone else finished DW? How is you feel?

>>By silly_girl87   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 17:07)

i have also just finished DW and i also felt empty inside after that ending i was hooked all the way through after i finished it all i can think of is that he will be taking nick stone down a different path i would like to see how his next book is going to start.

>>By vance   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 18:55)

For dopes like me (I know..there's no-one like me, dope or othherwise...) who couldn't find where to get to AM's new one...

Eggstra (sorry!!) info...
Hardcover 400 pages (November 4, 2004)
Publisher: Bantam Press
ISBN: 0593050282

That'll help in the quest...

>>By bikergirl   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 19:06)

Fanx for the eggstra info, Bikergirl...
I'll save one of my vanilla butter cream eggs for ya, okay?
(Now, where did I leave my willpower?)

Welcome, Silly_girl87... :o)
Wow, another Yank! Always neat meeting US folks who read AM cuz we seem to be so and far between!

Hello, Vance...
With an profile like yours what more can be said? -- well, except maybe: "Welcome to F Troop." ;o)

Re: "Has anyone else finished DW?"
Yes, a fair number of us have but several haven't yet. To discuss DW or any other of AM's books in specific detail, there is a "spoilers" feature we can use (you can go to www.gnooks.com/discussion/text+formatting.html for a test drive).

F Troop you made my day!!

>>By alice   (Thursday, 8 Apr 2004 22:27)

Hey there, Alice!
Seeing you posting makes my day too! :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 16:39)

Am-i-binned marry me, please.

The Sun's article; it's more or less the same everywhere, people who decide only have an abstract vision of the job, and there are always economic matters too. Anyway I think it's getting better.

Deep Black; I share Silly girl's mind, how can it go on now?!

>>By alice   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 18:59)

Deep black is the description of the pit we're in after DW??
(or maybe Nick is)

>>By Lynn   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 20:41)

This title doesn't sound too good...

>>By alice   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 20:56)

One Ninjawoman reporting for F Troop ! Have a nice Easter weekend.

NW

>>By Ninjawoman   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 21:31)

Hiya Ninjawoman! Have a good Easter yourself. :-) Hoppy Holidays to everybody!

Deep Black does sound a bit on the "down" side. Hopefully it's referring to the pit where the bad guys find themselves. ;-)

>>By Dare   (Friday, 9 Apr 2004 23:37)

Or maybe the title refers to a massively parallel computer (like IBM's Deep Blue) except instead of playing chess, it plays Team SAS on Xbox?

Just a thought.

Here's another: Monday morning all the chocolate goes on sale...

>>By Majorette   (Saturday, 10 Apr 2004 00:06)

Happy Easter, All!

Errr... Majorette?
Have you considered that I may have consumed all the chocolate by then? :o\

Ohmiyes, Lynn...
Definitely a deep black pit after DW! :o(

Oooh, Dare...
Maybe deep black is all that the Yes Man, George, Sundance, etc. will be seeing. It's about time Nick settled up with them! :o)

Uhm, Alice...
Your proposal's fine with me, but my significant other thinks a bit differently... ;o)

Welcome, Ninjawoman...
In keeping with SOPs, care to share a bit more? :o)
