Thanks Lynn :-)

By the way, I still haven't had any florks answering <the> question; I suppose I'm not the only one who's wondering what happened...

>>By The Scandinavian   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 15:24)

I'm not a member of the Yahoo group, and even _I'm_ wondering what happened! hahaha

Perhaps it's the curse of Andy McNab... anything bearing his name/likeness is destined to disappear.

>>By Majorette   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 20:42)

re Majorette: "I'm not a member of the Yahoo group, and even _I'm_ wondering what happened! hahaha"

The Y group was deleted by Yahoo due to serious complaint lodged!!!

I can assure all of you that Andy McNab had no hand in the demise of the Yahoo group...

However, as Matt said: 16 member signups in a matter of a few days was testament to its relevance as a bolt-hole for likeminded people. That said, there is another "official" (or not) forum on Andy McNab movie/profile pages...

Anyone interested flork and I'll give you the URL.

>>By devonwren   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 21:08)

Wait, Wait... so you're sayin' the Y group got, um, "poof'd" ???

ROTFLMHO... wiping the tears from my eyes....

>>By Majorette   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 21:37)

ROFL
What a surprise...didn't need big windows to see that one coming...

>>By TabariGoddess   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 22:04)

The only reason I can see for a complaint to be filed and for Yahoo to ask it be shut down, is perhaps the Andy McNab name is considered copyright infringement. It would also explain why so many other sites disappear after they gain any attention. Perhaps the publisher sees it as some kind of infringement issue. Perhaps if the group were renamed?

Yahoo won't just shut down a group for a minor/major complaint. The group has to flagrantly violate their guidelines to get booted, so it's probably something like issue with name.

>>By Dare   (Friday, 26 Mar 2004 22:59)

US flag burning pic was considered offensive to the Yahoo crew despite the fact the person setting fire to it set fire to himself as well...

Not to worry, just received this from Matt:

Okay chaps we are back online. Feel free to post all original pics excepting "US flag burner"

Pass on the message. thanx

Violation of Andy McNab copyright had nowt to do with Yahoo ban. It were all down to US flag photo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We can't use same name a second time and change of group name we hope will have greater appeal than McNab on his tod. 17 members was good going but happen we can do better.

Well that's good, DW. At least they told you what the issue is and it's something that could be easily fixed.

What ever happened to Paul R? There has been no sighting of him for some time here. If you still read this old mate send me a message and I'll try to figure out how to read it. Getting too old for this internet age.

>>By Boxer   (Saturday, 27 Mar 2004 10:07)

Welcome, Boxer...
Long-time lurker, first-time florker, eh? Yes, Paul R's presence here is missed. Good grins and excellent stories. In fact, we're still waiting for his Part 3 -- Grrrrrr! :o) Anyway, your message will be passed along...

>>By am-i-binned   (Saturday, 27 Mar 2004 14:43)

<Violation of Andy McNab copyright had nowt to do with Yahoo ban. It <were all down to US flag photo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...Which begs the question: What happens the next time someone posts something that someone at Yahoo doesn't like or doesn't understand??

Poof? Everyone's efforts gone without warning? One big reason - at least for me - that these discussions (both here and on Yahoo) are fun is that people are prepared to invest time and trouble into making the discussion worthwile and interesting, both on and off topic.

If what people are creating is just going to get torn down time and time again it surely can't be long before people stop coming back for more...

Best Regards

"T.S."

Boxer, please message me about Paul R.

Thanks,
Mel

This may be a dumb "technical" question, but... hey, consider the source, right?

There are NVAs (Night Viewing Aid), NVGs (Night Vision Goggles), and PNGs (Passive Night Goggles).

I gather they are different types of kit (goggles vs attached to weapon), but could someone give a bit of detail as to which is what and which does what?

>>By am-i-binned   (Sunday, 28 Mar 2004 17:04)

Paul R whereabouts?
I'd suggest (being biased...) watching the Wolrd Supers from Phillip Island.
Good day for the Aussies...
G'day to the Aussies...

********************
I'm searching for a place too...
Where incognito insiders give valuable insights...
Where those possessing intrinsic intelligence inform...
Where the intrepid interrupt with humour in the intervals...

But what of inflammatory insults? Insufferable invective? Inexcusable injustice? (usually from the minds of invertebrates...)
Invariably present in such a place where interaction between individuals occurs.
Imagine how it would be if those interactions where not inhibited by the intervention of an intermediary.
Where interconnections were allowed to evolve and resolve without influence.
Where inspirational input was not subject to institutional boundaries.

It's an indefinable place...
I'm still searching...

********************
The 'ate'...
so numerate...
did inspirate...
the above.
Many thanks.

Hello all. As the book that inspired me aged 17 to join the Royal Marine Commandos I was more than a little concerned to discover that the entire book may well be a fairly comprehensive fabrication. A documentary that I saw recently on the discovery channel entitled `The Real B20` uncovered some startling revelations and possible evidence to support this claim. A former SAS soldier travelled to the area in with the operation took place and interviewed civillians, police and militia that were involved in the compromise, fire fights and capture of the patrol. They all told a fairly consistent and very different story to that told by McNab and, to a lesser degree, Ryan. Physical evidencethat these witnesses were actually there was also provided in the form of Dingers binoculars, recovered not far from the point at wich he was most likley separated from his section. If the claims made by Iraqi locals are to be believed (and for many of them I see no reason why they should not be) then the body count reported by Mcnab in his book is a complete lie. Interestingly the documentary also interviewed the then RSM of the regiment who indicated that the debrief that Mcnab provided on return from the operation was almost entirley different from the acccount given in his book. He would not, for obvious reasons, divulge details of the actual debrief but indicated that the account given by the iraqis was far more consistent wiith the int that hae was given. If this is true it would at least indicate that Mcnab and his men were at least professional enough not to give a debrief that they knew to be incorrect. It does not however lend much weight to the book. On a more positive note though the documentary makers were able to return the missing binos to Dingers family wich must have given them some degree of closure on the whole affair.

Any thoughts any one?

Docjay:

"The Real Bravo Two Zero" by Michael Asher (both the book and the channel 4 documentary) have both been discussed here before. What I've found myself, is that in the end you don't know whose version to believe. The latest book on the "Bravo Two Zero"-branch, is Mike Coburn's "Soldier Five".
For me, (I've just started on S5, so I might change the following view upon completion), I lend the most creedence to Ken Connor's "Ghost Force" regarding seeking truthful and somewhat objective viewpoints on the whole B20-affair.
According to Chris Ryan, Michael Asher is a complete hoax, and was never a member of 23 TA SAS as he claims. (check out the interview in MP3-format at Codemasters' webpages for the computer-game "Project IGI-2" where Ryan served as a technical advisor).
Speaking of Ryan: I recommend reading the foreword-section of the latest edition of The One That Got Away. This puts Ryan in a different light I think when it comes down to the allegations of him discrediting the name of Vince Philips.

am-i-binned:

I've never used the term PNG's myself (Passive Nightvision Goggles. I've never heard of anything called "active" compared to "passive", so I'm not sure if "passive" is a very descriptive term), but my experience with nightvision-kit is this:

NVG's: Night Vision Goggles. Small binoculars with infrared capability (everything shows in a green luminescent light - as described in all the SAS books). Can be attached to a face-mask-like device to keep both hands free.
Another solution to this can be seen on pictures/video of US soldiers in Iraq that have a bracket attached to their helmets for the NVG's to be easily snapped on to.

NVB's: Night Vision Binoculars: Larger type of binocular with nightvision-capability. Looks like the NVG's with a large tube attached to it.

NVG-scopes that are designed to attach to weapons are very large and clumsy.
The Aimpoint scopes for example are much more practical, although they don't have IR-capability.
(If you've seen the movie Black Hawk Down, it's the type of scope that all the Delta Force guys have attached to their weapons. By the way: as the Somalia incident was in 1993, this is a technical glitch, as the Aimpoint-sights weren't around so early in the 90's. The fact that Eric Bana early in the movie can be seen with Oakley sunglasses that are 2001-models is also a bit entertaining for those of you who notices these things. Obviously - I am such a person).

Regards
ortie

>>By ortlieb   (Monday, 29 Mar 2004 23:14)

Clarification on the nightvision-stuff:

NVG's don't enlarge the image, they just make the operator see in the dark.
NVB's are binoculars that enlarge the image as a regular daylight pair of binoculars.

>>By ortlieb   (Monday, 29 Mar 2004 23:34)

Fanx, Ortlieb!
(God, I love when you talk techie! LOL!!!!)
....errr... uhm... hate to impose further on your generous nature but, considering how you had such neat weaponry links, do you have anything similar for these types of night-vision equipment?

>>By am-i-binned   (Tuesday, 30 Mar 2004 15:53)

Way ahead of you girl... :)

I found some civilian sites, but I was looking for sites that had the excact military models I've been using in the line of duty. I'll do some more URL-searching. In worst case, I'll post links to civilian models of similar NVG/NVB-models.

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 30 Mar 2004 15:59)

Excellent, Ortlieb! {*said in finest Monty Burns voice*} I'm hot on your tail... I mean, trail! LOL!!!

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 30 Mar 2004 16:04)

am-i-binned:

Here's a link to military NVG-models which are very similar to the ones I've used (both goggles and binoculars).

It's amazing the amount of military equipment that has been adapted to the civvie world. Some cases just overhauled with a less military package but still.... it's interesting what's available to the general public.
