Looked up kilt readit. Nothing inadequate as far as I can see, but I'm no expert.
What should I be looking for?
If Andy Macnab came here as a either a man or a woman I'd say hello there. I wouldn't be overawed or feel inadequate - why should I or anyone else? Would you?
Was not impressed by his lack of knowledge as to why signals are called scaleys. Did he never read Frank Collings autobiog? I'd tell him so.
I have a friend that lives in Hereford, she says Sass all the time. She's never been in t' regiment. It's semantic bullshit IMHO.

I'm with you Readit on the intonation and way of speaking being a dead give away. Hard to disguise your roots. Andy McNab has a penchant for the Hyperbole and the superlative he just can’t help himself.

Ski boots make you mince. So you might attract the wrong sort of attention off piste, I'd avoid them personally LOL.

Just send a message to the Relax with a book- thingy, and asked them if and when they would/will interview AM on his last book DW?
Will inform you lot if I get any answer (wich I doubt).

One quick question, how many have ordered Soldier 5? Just so that I know who pester with my "what did you think" questions. Thank you.

>>By Bethan   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 14:47)

Amnesia?
"I've mentioned ol' Ratty earlier!! Seems like I'm not the only one around here with random lapses of amnesia... ;)"
I know you did, that's why I said it!!! I knew you'd answer my question ta mate.

Oops Beth. My bad..... :)

Trident: Obviously, you're now aware of that you're not alone about having read EOTS.
I've also read TRB20, so I'm up for a discussion.
(Yet again... I pestered the whole board when I first joined up in here).

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 14:52)

Trident:

By the way... regarding your statement of a story coming out in different versions:

I have a suspicion that S5 will only add to the confusion -- not clarify it.
It's been mentioned earlier (both by people in here, and I've read this somewhere) that we all experience a shared event individually (obviously). Therefore, when these individuals are to talk about "what happened", the stories will all vary to some extent.
On the other hand (see -- I haven't got mine chopped off yet), I do think that the discrepancies found comparing the stories about Bravo Two Zero's op stem from something more than just the "variation-factor" that comes with individual perceptions....

Having read EOTS, you also saw Ratcliffe "setting the record straight" about Alpha One Zero's mission. I you haven't read it yet, I strongly suggest that you read Cameron Spence's Sabre Squadron. And while you're at it, get a look at his second book All Necessary Measures.

I haven't read Victor Crossland's Victor Two yet, but my initial point is (finally, sorry it took so long) that A10 is another perfect example of one event that has spawned different versions of what happened: Sabre Squadron and Victor Two coming out at first -- then EOTS supposedly delivering the "truth and nothing but the truth".

Hadn't it been for the MOD's firm censorship grip, I think we would see a whole bunch of squaddies jumping on the Regimental gravy-train who had decided to write about various "shady" op's, and then have the same amount of guys in a second wave writing what I call "retaliation-books".....

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 15:13)

Uhm, backtracking just a bit...
AM didn't retain his infantry rank of sergeant when he got into the Regiment, only his infantry sergeant's pay rate, which he says "was less than a trooper earned in the Special Air Service."

Readit gave an excellent link on pg 128 (thanks, Readit!) which shows rank progression in the British Army as being:

ENLISTED RANKS
Private
Lance Corporal
Corporal
Sergeant
Staff Sergeant
Warrant Officer-Class 2
Warrant Officer-Class 1

OFFICER RANKS
Second Lieutenant
Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lieutenant Colonel
Colonel
Brigadier
Major General
Lieutenant General
General
Field Marshal

Readit, Paul R, Ortlieb, Trident or others....?
Can you maybe confirm if this rank structure is the same within the Regiment? Does the Regiment follow the same progression? (Embarrassed whisper: What rank is "trooper" in the SAS?) And also Borisette's question: What's the highest rank in the SAS?

Thanks again for that link, Readit.

What happened to the Sergeant-Major rank?

SAS trooper is the same as the regular private (rank-wise).
Though as a side-note I believe all ranks within the SAS are considered to have more "weight" to them than those you find in the ordinary Green Army.

So I don't believe that there's a classification thing like "the ranks in this bracket are regular ranks, and the ranks in this bracket are SAS-ranks".

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 16:25)

Isn't the CO a Lt Col position? With the Director on top? Brigadier-position?

More questions added to the Regimental mystery-soup......

>>By ortlieb   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 16:28)

Here's another question I'm a little embarassed to ask: Is a "squaddie" a trooper?

>>By Majorette   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 16:47)

After a discussion I had with my hubby about the French Foreigh Legion and its existance, I had a look at this site :
www.info-france-usa.org/atoz/legion/index.asp

they don't get paid all that much :
legionniare : euro 975,67 /month
corporal : 1219,59 /month
chief corp. : 1372,04/month

Lot's of info on that site, and if none of the F-troop passes selection we could try this one!!

>>By borisette   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 17:05)

F-Troop selection? Oh lordie I hope not. I've been dragged up said mountain once or twice by idiotic mates and it's too steep and too windy. I'm happy to be a wimp! My only experience of selection would be reading Immediate Action again.....

One question, why the hell does the military have so many bloody ranks?

>>By Bethan   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 17:41)

Dunno Beth, I do know all those ranks do zero for communication:

The Colonel's Order

A COLONEL ISSUED THE FOLLOWING DIRECTIVE TO HIS EXECUTIVE OFFICERS:

"Tomorrow evening at approximately 2000 hours Halley's Comet will be visible in this area; an event which occurs only every 75 years. Have the men fall out in the battalion area in fatigues, and I will explain this rare phenomenon to them. In case of rain, we will not be able to see anything, so assemble the men in the theater and I will show them films of it."

EXECUTIVE OFFICER TO COMPANY COMMANDER:

"By order of the Colonel, tomorrow at 2000 hours, Halley's Comet will appear above the battalion area. If it rains, fall the men out in fatigues, then march to the theater where this rare phenomenon will take place, something which occurs only once every 75 years."

COMPANY COMMANDER TO LIEUTENANT:

"By order of the Colonel be in fatigues at 2000 hours tomorrow evening. The phenomenal Halley's Comet will appear in the theater. In case of rain in the battalion area, the Colonel will give another order, something which occurs once every 75 years."

LIEUTENANT TO SERGEANT:

"Tomorrow at 2000 hours, the Colonel will appear in the theater with Halley's comet, something which happens every 75 years. If it rains, the Colonel will order the comet into the battalion area."

SERGEANT TO SQUAD:

"When it rains tomorrow at 2000 hours, the phenomenal 75-year-old General Halley, accompanied by the Colonel, will drive his comet through the battalion area theater in fatigues."

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 21:22)

Well i liked the comet whatsit

about the teenage books.
i am expecting them to be very fiction and a bit too exagerated as so to appear interesting to snotty nosed teenagers...

all that rank stuff is a bit much to take in at a quick glance at the page...
try remembering the order of rank and all the sholder badges (stripes/stars) whatever...... ehh.....nahh maybe not...

Bethan:
I have not ordered soldier 5 but i will defenately get it the day/week it is released...
IT BETTER BE GOOD AND TRUTHFULL

do you think that if soldier 5 makes AM seem to be a liar, will it ruin his reputation, e.g. book sales?...

>>By Yes-Man   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 22:24)

Hihihihihihihi... *wink to Lynn*
:D

>>By Deusrexmachina   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 22:29)

Bethan, those ranks things, well ya know what it is,....... it's a male thing :
"anything you can do I can do better, I can do anything better than you..."

>>By borisette   (Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004 23:20)

So that's behind the story there being so little women in the army!
They can do everything better but there's no higher rank!

(ok running..............................) :o)))

>>By Lynn   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 00:33)

I don't think Soldier 5 will affect McNab's sales now, he's established. Would have been a different case probably, if it hadn't been held up in the courts....

>>By Bethan   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 09:33)

I'm glad this rank thing is sorted, tried to get a lovely army man to explain it a long time ago but he couldn't say his r's properly which meant I couldn't stop giggling whenever he said rank or ranking. Gutter girl, that's me.....

>>By Bethan   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 09:40)

Repremand and threat of jankers or banishment came my way yesterday for talking dirty, I think that's what Flork said ;)

Mustn't talk about anything else but McNab!!! Where shall I start ladies?

Duh, somebody forgot RSM jotted down as missed here by an observant McNab enthusiast, then Colour Sergeant/Major got missed too.

You ladies is not reading and absorbing proper.

Nomad what make of ski boots? I'm wearing competition footies.

Nice one who ever it was florked about McNab spending too much time on gnooks and not enough time writing Dark Winter. See didn't tell on yer girl! Keeping on McNab theme here in case Flork is watching me close like, what's the thinking on why he keeps killing women off? I know you've all discussed cathartic behaviour before and a few mentioned wives and girlfriends and how he relives his life in books. Now you girls must know or have a sense that he's killing off ex's in his books. Am I right on that and if he is which is which? You women are better at knowing guessing , intuitive like!

>>By readit   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 11:12)

Miltary history said wiv saaf london accent.

Trooper at one time was lower rank cavalry sort of adopted by support troops on foot like in Trooping the Colour farce before the Queen, squaddie lower rank Army more up to date term without mention of rude version.

Don't get believing ranks have more weight in the SAS, I've seen a Scots Guards RSM tell an SAS RSM where to shove it!!! And seen a Para officer step in and take command in a life or death situation two SAS sergeants were faffing about.

>>By readit   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 11:26)

Hi, Ortlieb...
<< What happened to the Sergeant-Major rank? >>
Dunno.... I double-checked Readit's link, but Sgt-Majors were only listed under US Army and US Marine Corp.

Hi, Readit...
<< then Colour Sergeant/Major got missed too >>
Not sure if you're referring to that list like Ortlieb was, but I only saw "Colour Sgt" under Royal Marines (as equiv to Brit Army Staff Sgt) but is there a Colour Sergeant/Major too? (sorry, woefully clueless me about how this rank stuff works -- that's why I liked your link... but does this mean there are gaps in the chart info?)

Missed one, Lynn... ;o)

To set the fish flying how abot Drum Major and Pipe Major? The link below is less Americanised and less fathoms deep to understand.
http://www.elsham.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ranks.html

I in't saying no more I got a little Gremlin up my arse at every turn all of a sudden, bit like a store detective. Keeps looking over me shoulder and there's that pink trimmed Flork hat lurking at the end of the column!

Anyone seen the mouse in the kilt on the kirry food ad? If Flork gets any closer I'll do a mousey on the bleeder.

>>By readit   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 16:27)

Huh?!?

Could you translate that just a fraction, readit? It's a bit tooooo Brit or soldiery or whatever for me to follow. I mean I do get some (and thanks for the new link) but whooosh! went all the rest... :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 16:32)

Hahaha!!!! Ohmigosh! Talk about at totally unintentional Freudian - cross-posting - TZ - pun!!!

Sorry, readit! A complete and utter coincidence -- my post timing and choice of words as well as yours. The internet gods must be playing tricks on us! LOL!!! :oD

>>By am-i-binned   (Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004 16:36)

Hahaha! Sorry, still laughing! (and feeling a little flushed, in fact!) Just realized I should clarify even further... scattered throughout our 131 pages, a-i-b has had lots of things go "whoooosh!" as in "right over my head"... but never got quite so swept away with it tho! Ohman! Sorry! I must need sleep or something... LOL!!!

"I got a little Gremlin up my arse"
You want to get AIB to send you some of her bengay.

If I've understood correctly (major if here) yeah it bugs me getting things wiped off too. If I've misunderstood ah well, still bugs me.... Lost with the mouse though..
