Hi, I'd like to introduce myself to this discussion board.
I've read entries here on and off for the past year or so and have finally decided to join in!
First of all, I'd like to point out that I don't know AM, or any one connected to him, have never served in the Army or Special Forces. I am simply a fan of his writing. I first read B20 in about 1995 and was blown away (excuse the pun) by it. I then followed that with IA and have subsequently read all of his novels. I'm currently reading Recoil.
I have my own views about the B20 mission and AM's writing style. I hope that in future post I can add these to the discussions.
I will try and respect everyone's views and opinions.
Thanks.

Hello. I, too am an Andy McNab fan. I think Crossfire will be one of his best, because in the novel Nick Stone protects journalists in a war zone just as Andy has done in real life. Does anyone have any guesses (uneducated guesses fine) as to what Andy will do next besides Nick Stone? I'm thinking since Boy Soldier worked out well, we might see "Silly Selection: Is Your Toddler Tough Enough?" or something similar for the really young kids.

Oh boy Hank, I can swear I've heard your name before! It could be "Stop All Sarcopenia - combat training for 65+" Suits me better anyway - I"m getting there slowly ;-)
Hi 10Ks, how's Recoil?
>>By Lynn (Saturday, 8 Sep 2007 16:02)
Hi Lynn
Recoil is going well. I've just completed the opening part in Zaiire. Nice start to the book, and I'm already wondering how these characters will integrate into the rest of the story.
What I like about AM is how he drops in these little nuggets of info because you believe he's been in similar situations before. And he writes in such a way that's easy to read and yet gripping at the same time. And, of course, there's his witty one-liners.
Lynn, thanks for some of your recent links to details about AM.
Cheers

I fully agree with you 10Ks ;-) And you're welcome.
Our Jon has created a News Page at the Greymansland website. Take a look there sometime too ! :-)

I may be going over old ground here and forgive me if I am. I've dipped into these discussion pages over the years and can't confess to reading them all. Mind you, I wouldn't confess to most things but that's another story.
Most of the flak aimed at AM's account of B20 seems to be based around his alleged embellishments of the story, ranging from how far the patrol actually covered to how many men they fought and/or killed. What never seems to be in question is the harrowing experiences he suffered while in captivity. Considering this period is over half the book, I find this a little odd.
I haven't read anything by anyone who finds discrepancies with what he wrote about during his time after he was captured. Peter Ratcliffe, for example, says that what AM said in the debrief about the various contacts the patrol were involved in differed to what he wrote in B20, but nothing like the same about what happened after he was captured.
It doesn't follow to me that AM would exaggerate the first half of the book and not the second half, or vice versa. In my opinion I found the period in captivity to be the best part of the book. The courage and mental strength he showed astonished me.
Once again, I'm sorry if I've trodden over well-worn ground but just thought I'd throw this in for discussion.
Thanks

Well, the torture he suffered didn't really NEED embellishment, did it? It was horrific enough as it was. The reality of the incidents leading up to capture, however, isn't as "action hero" exciting as Andy wanted, so he made some sh*t up. I don't see anything that bad about it; I mean no one's going to mistake McNab for a serious historian of the Gulf War. I highly recommend Mike Coburn's book if you want the truth about B20.
>>By Hank Diddler (Saturday, 15 Sep 2007 02:41)
Hank, are you saying then that, in your opinion, the torture he endured and wrote about is exactly what happened, but that some incidents before capture are "made up"? If so, I find it hard to believe he would bend the truth for one half of the book but keep the other half exactly as it happened.
That's only my opinion and, for what it's worth, I think the whole B20 story is amzing enough without the need for embellishment.
Has anyone read Heroes of the SAS by Barry Davies? The B20 mission is mentioned in it, and is the story told to Barry by one of the patrol's seniors.
I've read Mike Coburn's book as well but was slightly disapponted in that it wasn't as different from AM's account as all the hype had suggested. There were minor variations in the distances travelled by the patrol but on the whole I thought their two accounts up to the point where Mike was shot were pretty similar.
Hank, I'd be interested to hear why you think Mike's account is the truth?
>>By 10KsToTheBorderMate (Saturday, 15 Sep 2007 21:09)
Hi 10K. To address your comments in order: >>I find it hard to believe he would bend the truth for one half of the book but keep the other half exactly as it happened. Why? Unless you've never told a lie in your life, I would suspect that you've lied about some things while somehow managing to tell the truth about other things. You lie when you feel you need to or when you expect some gain from it. My contention is that Iraqi torture is bad enough to not need embellishment, though I wouldn't be shocked to find even some of that had been stretched a bit. >>I think the whole B20 story is amazing enough without the need for embellishment. Agreed. Mike Coburn, Stan, and Dinger agree, too. >>Has anyone read Heroes of the SAS by Barry Davies? The B20 mission is mentioned in it, and is the story told to Barry by one of the patrol's seniors. "One of" the seniors? You realize three of the patrol are dead. That's a lot of seniors. >>I've read Mike Coburn's book as well but was slightly disapponted in that it wasn't as different from AM's account as all the hype had suggested. There were minor variations in the distances travelled by the patrol but on the whole I thought their two accounts up to the point where Mike was shot were pretty similar. Agreed again, only I don't know why you were disappointed. I think Andy's lies were meaningless and only done to make the story more exciting--exaggerating the initial firefight, for instance. I was actually glad to find his lies weren't more substantive. >>Hank, I'd be interested to hear why you think Mike's account is the truth? Rephrase that..."Why do Hank, Coburn, Dinger, and Stan think Mike's account is the truth? One man thinks Andy's account is the truth...Andy. Now, having said all that, let me make clear again I don't think it's a big deal, and Andy's version is a better read than Mike's. For big lies, see Ryan's version.
>>By Hank Diddler (Thursday, 27 Sep 2007 17:07)
I'd rather ask how much of the alleged exaggerations in B20 are McNab's doing and how much of it his agent/publisher. After all..a book must be sold.
For a quick update:
McNabs laptop was nicked or more popular 'nabbed' http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/ [ LOSE SPACE] 0,,2-2007420689,00.html
Andy wrote an open letter to the thief suggesting he'd join the army. I read Francis Ford Coppola's has just been robbed of his laptop as well... he did an emotional plea to the robbers to return his laptop and suggested the thief would join the army in one of his movies. Actually I'm making that last bit up.
Another link I'd like to post is about a new website with McNab video's - though it's still in beta www.battleseen.com
And last, there's a new Audiostory published called "Roadside Bomb" and the stories are also availabe on iTunes UK these days: go to http://www.apple.com/uk/itunes/ [ LOSE SPACE ] store/audiobooks.html

Looks like 10k is busy reading McNab with one hand. He's way hot, dude, and I don't have any problem with your choice of lifestyle.
>>By Hank Diddler (Monday, 1 Oct 2007 00:08)
Sorry, been away for a few days learning how to read one-handed.
It's definitely not easy and can lead to cramp.
Re: 'seniors', I didn't explain myself very well. I meant one of the patrol's senior officers. Or that's what I think it said in the book.
And re: Hank's last post, I'm well confused. Choice of lifestyle? I don't have a clue what I'm doing from one day to the next...
>>By 10KsToTheBorderMate (Monday, 1 Oct 2007 04:51)
I DID NOT post that last comment. I know exactly who did that, a person who knows a password I sometimes use. I'm changing the password for flork so it won't happen again. Sorry, 10k, that someone insulted you, but it wasn't me.
>>By Hank Diddler (Saturday, 6 Oct 2007 21:48)
Hmm... nicked laptops, purloined passwords, florking intrigues! Welcome to the wild and wacky world of Andy McNab, eh?
Thank goodness some things never change! :oD
>>By am-i-binned (Sunday, 7 Oct 2007 18:15)
Ah Hank I didn't take it as an insult - I just didn't understand it.
I will take your word for it but I have my suspicions.
How do we know your last post wasn't written by somebody else?
This wasn't written by me either.
>>By 10KsToTheBorderMate (Sunday, 7 Oct 2007 23:35)
"written by somebody else" and "wasn't written by me either" - combined with AIB's "some things never change" LOL, indeed ;-) Good to hear from you AIB!!
2 Interviews with Andy - one on a New Zealand page: "Getting frank with Andy McNab" About terrorists, pseudonyms, NI, shitting in plastic bags and other fun stuff. See:
http://www.getfrank.co.nz/andy-mcnab.html? [ LOSE SPACE ] page=0
With that one you have to do with a few (old) pics but you can see Andy 'live' in a video interview, it's cut into several 'chapters' - like 'Life as an author' and 'General Questions' etc For all that go here:

10K, I've done some computer forensics and it turns out your posts were written by me and mine, by you. But anyway... I'm really looking forward to McNab's latest. I think this every time, that he's going to return to what I consider his best form (Immediate Action and Remote Control), and yes I'm sometimes disappointed. But I'm still excited, if only because I know that no matter what the plot or characters may lack, Andy's gonna put in a couple of one-liners that have me in stitches. I do hope he will include a few "secrets" like he did in the early days (i.e., how to defeat a motion detector), and I think we will see some inside info in this one regarding how hired protection of news teams works. I take it everyone here WILL be buying the new one, right? Who the hell posted this? I was in hospital while this was typed.
>>By Hank Diddler (Saturday, 13 Oct 2007 18:38)
Hank
Computer forensics? Please forgive me, but I will throw a large pinch of salt at everything you write from now on ;)
How did everyone else find Recoil? I'm finding it a bit slow. I'm at the middle of the book where Nick is in the jungle and it's only really started to get going.
Thanks again for the links Lynn. The 'videojug' stuff is excellent.
>>By 10KsToTheBorderMate (Monday, 15 Oct 2007 10:27)
Thanks for the links Lynn, really interesting. He's got lots of things in the pipeline, hasn't he, I hope the scripts and the BBC drama he mentions get into production.

i got the book yesterday and Im a few chapters in, and frankly its suprised me... This is going to be his dasrkest ride for Nick Stone from what I have read so far, and it looks like this is going to be a real edge of your seat of a novel. It starts out in Stan and then goes to basra, Im not telling you guys anything F-troop rules and dont want be drummed out. But I'm currently in a sick bed with a flu type chest infection so Im quietly reading through it with cups of hot lemon tea. I'll leave you know how I get on woohoo this book is brilliant
