I don't know if any of you have ever seen the friday night project but it's one of the funniest shows on tv in britain (well I think so, which doesn't say much). Here's them dealing with the boy himself. Beth (damn take out the gap, forgot about the limit again!!)

Oh god, first jokes coming in. Apparently AM's action figure can really 'do' things: it jumps out of windows. Bleh!!
>>By Lynn (Monday, 6 Nov 2006 23:34)
I'm gonna wander off for a moment - I ran into this and then remembered something I read.
According to an interview AM was reading The Private Life of Chairman Mao (think he's finished it yet?) written by his personal medic Dr. Zhisui Li - now 2 sentences that made me shiver (about this story):
"It also shows Mao's signs of illness, paranoia,as well as neglecting dental hygiene (Mao's teeth has a green coated film; when Dr. Li touched Mao's Gums, Pus oozed out)"
and
"Dr. Li would later learn more about Mao's "imperial" attitudes and witness firsthand Mao's voracious appetite for a never-ending stream of eager young women."
We have an expression: "Power erotizises" - maybe in English it's a different expression but you'll get what I mean ;-)
>>By Lynn (Tuesday, 7 Nov 2006 22:10)
"Power eroticizes." There are forms of power other than political--it's just that the quality of girl goes up as the power increases, and running a nation is pretty much the pinnacle. I could easily prove this by showing an unaltered pic of Andy McNab to various women and telling them he's a shoe salesman--the guy would not be a big draw. Tell the women what he's done and who he is, though--well, there's your power. And really that's how it should be. I'm attracted to talented, powerful women, for instance--yes, that means all of you chicks here ; ). As for the green teeth, that's indeed freakin' gross. Yellow or brown teeth can land you a job as a British toothpaste model, but GREEN...yech! Sorry, that was too easy!
>>By Just Jon (Thursday, 9 Nov 2006 02:13)
> the guy would not be a big draw
You're talking about a guy who married 5 times! Drawing may not be a problem... but the keeping? ;-) Sorry, too easy..ditto
Seriously, I hear he's quite a charmer - but even if he were a shoe salesman I think I'd still prefer that above Mao. Andyway...... nothing wrong with shoe salesmen..is there? Al Bundy had a lot of fans ;-)

In Review - Recoil by Andy McNab
See: http://www.inthenews.co.uk/entertainment/reviews/ reviews/books/fiction/recoil-by-andy-mcnab-$457338.htm
Recoil is the ninth installment in the Nick Stone series and looks sure to keep McNab on the bestsellers list.
As an example…
"Bodies kept pouring into the valley to bolster the assault wave as we kept hosing down the front of it. Bodies fell. Some ran in panic, but most kept on coming. A new sound filled the air. Lex was ahead of us at about 400, the glass bubble on the nose moving from right to left. The wing dipped as he turned up on the lip, then there was a rattle and roar as the pair of 23mm cannon kicked of like gatling guns."

Recoil extract from Transworld:
1 Davy had offloaded his 175 Yamaha and gone ahead to recce the valley. He'd be back soon, unless the rebels had caught him. We'd been training Mobutu's troops against these guys, and we knew that knitting baby bootees and collecting china thimbles wasn't high on their list of favourite hobbies.
When you're up against the kind of guys who routinely machete off an entire village's lips because one of the locals has been overheard saying something not nice about the president, you know it's time to check chamber.
Our four ancient, rusting Renault trucks were spread out and static just below the crest of the high ground. The drivers had killed their engines the moment we got here. It wasn't something you'd normally do with old wagons like these, in case they refused to fire up again, but we didn't have a whole lot of choice; the Zaïreans had only been able to find us a couple of dozen jerry-cans of fuel at such short notice, and those engines drank like a Swede on a stag night.
The early-afternoon sun was relentless. So were the flies. The fuckers had found us within minutes and it took a neverending Thai hand dance to keep them out of my face. I wiped sweat from my eyes with the corner of a red gingham tablecloth I'd ripped in half and draped over my head and shoulders. I'd put the other half to good use too: it covered the working parts of my GPMG.
I opened the top cover and let the belt of 7.62mm link drop out. I lifted the feed tray, peered into the empty chamber and smoothed away a few grains of sand with a finger. We'd been bouncing along dirt tracks all the way from Kinshasa, and even the high commissioner's table linen couldn't stop the stuff finding its way into every nook and cranny. It didn't matter that my nose and eyes were full of grit, but it would if it got into the working parts and the gun jammed at just the moment I needed it to go bang.
Satisfied that the feed tray and chamber were shit-free, I cradled the link in my left hand as I threaded it back on to the feed tray. Then I slammed the top cover down again and thumped it with my fist for good measure; the belt was firmly in place. I gave the gun's ancient wooden carry handle a jiggle to make sure the bipod was wedged firmly between the two sandbags lashed to the bonnet. We didn't know how many rebels there were down in the valley, or how well they were armed, but when the shit hit the gingham I wanted to be giving as good as I got.

Recoil, top notch as always, great story told in the inimitable McNab way but non-Brits may require a few cultural translations! My only complaint, as for the previous three or four novels, is the amount of blank paper and very short chapters, the book could have been much slimmer. But then you can always use it as notebook when you've finished reading!
>>By camban (Monday, 13 Nov 2006 12:54)
> the book could have been much slimmer
Couldnt we all ;-)
Thanx for the review Cam, can't wait to get my copy :-)
>>By Lynn (Monday, 13 Nov 2006 13:02)
Very disappointed with Recoil. The first section should have lasted about 10 pages at most. Then the action moved to the present day and it's back to form. Alas it doesn't last and we are back to over-long descriptions of battles. In fact, about two thirds of the book is one long battle and one third is a very lame story. Who gives a hoot about the silly German bird? I won't spoil the plot but the a few novels ago it would have been a very different ending.
None of the usual secondary characters to become fond of shortly before they die. None of the switching from location to location. No evocative descriptions of "environment".
I think McNab has moved on, lost interest in his hero and has churned this one out to pay a few bills. It's a Stone too far, what a shame.
I think it's about time we got a third installment of the autobiography. I'd like to see a new book on his exploits running his CP company alongs the lines of DF's web reports. He also has interesting things to say about his experience as an author in this genre.
>>By Lisle45 (Tuesday, 14 Nov 2006 17:40)
I'd love the same thing; a new autobiography is a great idea! Also, my local zoo is taking suggestions for the name of it's new baby panda. I think "Andy" would suit the little guy just fine. If ya'll want to help, just visit: http://www.zooatlanta.org
>>By Just Jon (Wednesday, 15 Nov 2006 16:46)
Sorry to hear Lisle - I can't wait to find out you're wrong ;-) Loved the 'book' you got me though, I've read it over and over again - hehe
A new biography.. After the Action? Suggestions for title? I could only find Catch-Andy2, what do you think Jon?
>>By Lynn (Wednesday, 15 Nov 2006 17:50)
You know, I don't think Andy realises his broad appeal. He is not just some ex-SAS author--his personality and writing ability are what draws most of his fans. He could really sell in the U.S. if his publishers would remove their collective heads from their arses for a few seconds of rational thought. The guy's funny, smart, great at talking, and a true hard man. He could sell any damned thing he wanted to here in the States. I think a good title for the next autobiographical installment would be "Revolutionary Warfare." He could go into not just what he did but overall theory. It would be more interesting than Tom Clancy's shit where Tom interviews a bunch of Rangers, etc. I will put my money where my mouth is...if anyone can tell me how to arrange a license agreement with Andy, I will sell and sell and sell until he realises the U.S. IS a viable market. NOW GO VOTE FOR NAMING THAT PANDA "ANDY"! www.zooatlanta.org
>>By Just Jon (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 06:59)
"All suggested names for the female giant panda cub will be reviewed by officials at Zoo Atlanta and the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding; all ten names will be presented with a Chinese translation."
What's Andy in Chinese???
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 11:14)
Ahhh this is funny :-) http://www.mandarintools.com/chinesename.html
According to this site Andy McNab is 'Ma An Ning' - but if I understood right, it may differ. Have to fill in required skills.. I went for "mind and intelligence" but feel free to try "beauty and appearance" or "strength and power" ;-)
No I don't have anything better to do at the moment. I allowed myself a break. ;-)
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 11:25)
2nd time I get Mao ! Now that's a coincidence, happy to know (hearsay - of course) the teeth aren't the same ;-)
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 11:31)
Lisle is being a tad harsh I think, after all, the scenario of 'Recoil' is a total departure from anything Nick has done before (in print) he is recalling his SAS days in order to provide a story link, bit like the Waco thing in a previous novel (Blackout?). But then he moves on to the battle scenes which he has not done before, no spy tradecraft here but a new sort of story line, I liked it anyhow.
As for the Chinese translation, how about Foo Ky Niriot? Run it through your head!
>>By camban (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 12:12)
Tickles my nose Cam :-)
Haven't checked my name, Me Lin is chinese enough I think ;-)
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 12:55)
New title for the newer autobiography ? How about " The Ultimate Survival manual in a Retirement Home or Pimped up memories from a rocking chair" ?
The panda is female ? How about Lotuspetal ?
>>By Ninjawoman (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 13:36)
Is that number 430 on the menu?
>>By Lynn (Thursday, 16 Nov 2006 14:15)
Regarding the reviews, I am disappointed to hear that there's little of the spycraft in Recoil. One of the most appealing things about Nabby's novels are the little tricks you learn, like defeating a motion detector with an egg carton or picking a lock with an electric toothbrush. I can't afford Recoil yet so I'll have to reserve judgement, but I'm betting it's still a good read. As for Andy's Chinese name...I got Mao too, and I used a different name for him! Maybe we should call him "Chairman Andy" from now on! Now here's an article to check out in which 007 is compared to SAS blokes of the author's acquaintance, as usual provided by a proud member of the GML army: http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk /film/features/article1963442.ece
>>By Just Jon (Friday, 17 Nov 2006 01:42)
Fear not Jon, in this exciting episode you will learn how to improvise a giant claymore using only commonly available items! Not only that, you will also learn about the impact our need for cell phones and computers is having on pristine jungle environments!
By the way, what's happened to our Randy? serving time for committing lewd acts in public or something probably.
>>By camban (Friday, 17 Nov 2006 15:48)
You spread that in public Cam? There must be SOME privacy rule that applies to Randy ;-)
