Comment to #11: Maybe that' why, after years of allusiveness, he didn't try to lie out of the questioning. Maybe he was tired of running and wanted to admit to the killing.

21. I don't think it was just over the cows but over a broken friendship and maybe even broken honor. Don Lupe was suppossed to be a compadre--a grandfather or a co-father to Juvencio's son. Lupe was letting Juvencio's cows die. Why? Was it a deeper issue?

Wendy... I totally agree... could not they solve the problem in court??????
>>By RuSlaN14 (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:39)
18 Why do you think Lupe's son did not show his face but stayed hidden in the hut?? cindy

9) Amanda K. I thought that the avenge of Don Lupe's death was the only just answer to his crime... espescially with regards to the agony he died in... and then to recognize the mercy that his so showed as he allowed him to get drunk before they shot him. I loved that. What did you think? (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:40)
16. Matt
Was there a bigger meaning to this story? I read it looking for something huge like the rest of the stories we read seem to have. Yet I did not find anything. Can someone please help me?

9) Amanda K. holla back! woo, woo! (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:42)
15 Amanda N. Why didn't he confess to everything he did before all this commotion occurred? He just made it worse for himself in the long run.
>>By Amanda (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:42)
response to #17 (jeremy) I thought that he was running from his family because he wanted to.. for himself... so i really don't believe that it was punishment because I thought he chose to do it.

TO: Cindy18, I think it's a very good question. I think it adds some meaning to the whole story, but I haven't yet figured that out. When you do, let me know. Thanks :=)

10) Response I think if the story was told from a different point of view the story would change. If it was told from the Colonel's point of view I think we would hear of his years of searching and anger in trying to find his fathers killer.
>>By Jeremy (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:42)
I am wondering why he thought it paid his dues just by running away and hiding? Doing that was not being punished for his crime of murder he was free the whole time.

What was that crap about the freaking corn? Okay, one minute he's up in the mountains....and the next his yapping about some damn dry corn. You killed somebody, why worry about corn?-you idiot!

Yeah so why did he all of a sudden become honest after all these years of running?
>>By Janelle (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:44)
response to mom I think, judging by the brief glimpse at his character, he probably didn't want to see the face-- perhaps he would feel pity and absolve him of his crime, without comming to justice. 9)Amanda (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:45)
4. how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
>>By steve " I can't think of a cool nickname" Zielger (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:46)
Response to 15, I think he ran earlier because maybe he thought he could get away with it, that he wouldn't get caught. Then thirty years later, he finally realized that he couldn't hide anymore.

(Not really a question-Just a comment) Isn't it too easy to write a story when the the guy dies at the end? Do you think they will be a sequal, where he avenges his death wearing a hockey mask?

Comment to question 21)
mexican culture is extremely family oriented. The grandparents usually live with the parents and grandchildren. The fact that Don Lupe was suposed to be Juvencio's compadre "Co father" , in mexican culture this is a very strong family tie and relationship, why Don Lupe did not let Juvencio's animals graze, especially angered Juvencio because his animals = Juvencio's life, basically , if his animals were allowed to die in a sence this was like killing Juvencio's livleyhood, slowly but shurley. I think Juvencio was deffinately encouraged and justified the murder he commited by the fact that Don Lupe was supposed to be family.
>>By Ben (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:46)
Response 3 I agree the initally killing was sensless, but what about Juvencio's death was that senseless or justified
>>By Jeremy (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:46)
In response to Janelle maybe after all the years of running he just became tired of spending his life that way. Although if he was tired of running and decided to give up why would he beg his son to help him? If he stopped running why didn't he accept the fact that he could possibly be caught and killed?
>>By Tiffani (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:46)
18 I think having to live in fear and running for 40 years was enough. What the son did I think was out or revenge and holding up the family honor in that culture.
>>By cindy (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:47)
Response to Janelle I think he just got tired of running and figured after all those years they would take pity on him and give him a pardon.
>>By Marion (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:47)
I think his death was justified, he murdered a man, it was a terrible death, then he tried to hide for thirty years. So yes he deserved to die.

if a woodchuck could chuck wood, a woodchuck would chuck as muc as a woodhuck could chuck wood. i think.
>>By M to the izzo (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:49)
Response to #15.. He probably didn't confess right away because he thought he would get away with it.

I feel the image of the mirror gave a sort of reflection to the window. It made me think of the sound of freezing snow in December. And I remebered better days of sleeping with drunk women. What the hell is wrong with me? Dear lord, please have mercy on me- the bastard sinner of Snow Country....
>>By Steve "This is getting old" Ziegler (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:51)
response to wood chuck, no it's a woodchuck would chuck all the wood if a woodchuck could wood.
>>By Erin (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:51)
