Responses to short story "Don't let them kill me"

1) Marion

I think it was bad that he asked his son to get out of the situation as that was a request that the son could not honor

>>By Sunshine   (Wednesday, 16 Apr 2003 19:19)

2) Jessie

What made the orphan take pitty on the old man and let him get drunk before he was killed?

The old man had killed the orphan's father quite brutally.

3) Trudy

More senseless killing, don't you agree? An act of killing of an animal leads to the brutal death of another man.

Years later, after escaping capture many times, Juencio (sp?) is finally caught. He was so good in escaping all those years, why even admit to Guadalupe's son that it was "he?" Why be honest now after being so allusive for so many years.

Why did Juvencio kill Don Lupe? What was the animal part about? I did not really understand that part.

Question 3
Comment: i had the same question, and why when they came to the mountain he said he could have went and hid till they left, after hiding for 30 years why didn't he hide when they came?

Does the story change any if told from a different point of view, other than the condemmed man? I kind of felt sorry for him until I found out how brutally he murdered the other man.

>>By Ed   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:29)

#4-Steve: In the context of insight and social description, the main character had several inner driven desires. But this man lacked the subtleties of his descretion. With this in mind, why did his most undeniable thoughts force him to sanctify the act of murder?

I agree with steve... huh is right :)

I don't know how he could put his son in the position he did.

>>By 12.) Janelle   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:33)

18 cindy What a waste of a life! He spent his whole life running away out of fear and finally when he was old he felt he could be free and that's when they caught him.

>>By cindy   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:33)

Was it better punishment for Juencio to live all those years after the murder- Did he suffer more from living than if he would have been caught immediately and killed?

>>By 11.) Emily   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:33)

Question 6 I thought that it was stupid that he killed the guy over his animals. but they were i guess sharing the land and stuff and the other guy didn't want to comprimise and share so he killed him. i thought that was a dumb reason. he could have taken him to court or something

Question 2
Comments:

To answer the question, I would say that the orphan realized that after many years living in agony and searching for the murderer, he finally found the person who killed his father and that person would be punished for his father's death. Also, the orphan probably appreciated the fact that the murderer willingly admitted all the blame for his wrong-doing. Perhaps, the orphan then developed some pity.

In addition, I guess the author shows that people can hate others yet still humanly deal with the revenge. He knew that the murderer would certainly be murdered now, as he was finally caught. Hence, there was no need for the orphan to see the old man dying slowly and in agony. The bottom line is that the killer would be killed, the revenge would take its place.

What kind of justice system did Mexico have at the time? He found him and sentenced him to death in one action, no court, lawyer, nada.

>>By Ed   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:33)

7 jessie Why didn't someone turn the killer in to the police? When they knew what he did and where he was?

>>By Jessie   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:34)

17) Jeremy
Does anyone think that Juvencio years of hiding/being away from his family was punishment enough for his crime. And I think that the Colonel was just out for revenge?

>>By Jeremy   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:34)

In comment to #2: The orphan possibly felt obligated to avenge his father's death, but took pity on an "old man", so he took pity on him and left him get drunk.

21.) Why did he kill Don Lupe in the first place? Was it just over his cows grazing on his land?

>>By Tiffani   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:35)

#10-Yes

>>By Steve "The Daddy Mac" Ziegler   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:36)

6 cindy He killed Lupe because as coowner of the pasture land he would not allow
Juvencio Nava to use the land and so his cows were starving.

>>By cindy   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:36)

#4. Matt

Well, Steven, Don Lupe killed his cow. The cow was his money maker. I think the act of murder was somewhat justified, revenge is a pain. How he killed him may have been drastic, but all the same justified.

>>By Matt "Mr. Immaculation" Moore   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:37)

17 Response
I don't think being seperated from your family is punishment enough. He brutally slaughtered someone over a hamburger (cow). Don Lupe was seperated from his family, because he was dead. Maybe he should be sent to prison, not killed, but he needs to be punished.

>>By Ed   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:37)

20.) So, tell me, what exactly was the meaning of this story? I also didn't understand why he was hiding for so long and then all of the sudden he wanted to be honest. I thought that was strange.

>>By LeAnne   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:37)

Jessie I figure he wanted him to be punished for what he did to his father, but he didn't want him to suffer like his father did.

>>By 2 Marion   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:38)

[ 8 - Feeg ]

I did not enjoy how Juvencio was killed quickly and did not suffer as he should have . He could prepare for his death by drinking alcohol to lessen the pain which was really no kind of punishment at all .

holla .

19) Lindsay ... I don't understand why he didn't run when they arrived...what was different about this time that the 30 years before.

>>By 19) Lindsay   (Thursday, 17 Apr 2003 18:38)

Comment to question 3.
I agree with Trudy, what a senseless death! Killing a human because he shot someone's animal. A human life is much more valuable than the life of an animal.
