"..Funny, none of the women here are interested in the extraordinarily-high rates of domestic violence associated with the SAS/Special Forces.."

I don't know.. Maybe because i'll never know how it is to have a husband, who are involved with SP.. They are hard to find here in DK - maybe I have to move to Hereford :P
But where do you find actual stories of domestic violence in those homes? Would any ex-SAS ever confess to it?

>>By Elendar   (Sunday, 20 Nov 2005 20:35)

hi folks can someone plz tell me were all this crap is coming from about sas members beatting up there wifes.

SAS Domestic violence: "Biting the Bullet" by Jenny Simpson tells such a story. "SAS Sex Survival Manual" by Francis Nicholson tells it like it could have been, being McNab's wife for a while...

>>By camban   (Monday, 21 Nov 2005 13:39)

To what just jon said about the 'SAS fans' shooting up their classmates due to the books that mr McNab writes, one problem; In the majorety of his books he is not in the SAS. He is a lone wolf. A freelance solution to a problem that no one else will deal with.

Jon also said about how if the kids' monsters are kept under control, everythings fine but its when they are let loose its a problem. maby what jon means is that if they read the books and see nick stone solving a problem with a crossbow or a 9mm, and still be hunky dory at the end of it then why cant we?

Its a very interseting issue.

If you dangle a mouse infront of a staving cat the cat WILL make a final leap of faith. The problem isnt litereture, music or drugs. Its peer pressure, respect and victimisation.

maby what the world needs is a few more columbines. If that is what it takes to make people see that psycopaths are not born, they are bread then so be it.

if i have offended anybody with this post i am sorry. i have tryed to stay on both sides of the arguement as best as possible.

post a message and let me know your thoughts on the subject

:-)

No offense Cavemole2,

LETS JUST BEAT JON UP? Our you with me? Lynn?

>>By Reighnman   (Monday, 21 Nov 2005 15:21)

"psycopaths are bread"? Let's toast 'em then!

>>By camban   (Monday, 21 Nov 2005 15:57)

Pardon the intrusion, folks, but Just Jon, you are an idiot.

You said, "Funny, none of the women here are interested in the extraordinarily-high rates of domestic violence associated with the SAS/Special Forces. I guess in your fantasies you're never the ones getting hurt. Or does supporting our troops include putting up with an occassional black eye..?"

Do you really believe that people who read books by SF authors are supporting domestic violence? Do YOU support domestic violence? By your logic, I guess I am supporting alcoholism, infidelity, suicide, Communism, and Castro when I read Hemingway!!

Sorry people, I couldn't keep quiet on that one.

Back to lurking.........

Review by Nick Ryan
18 November 2005
The Daily Express
(c) 2005 Express Newspapers

AGGRESSOR By Andy McNab Bantam Press, £17.99

ONE good thing about an Andy McNab thriller is that you know exactly
what you're going to get.

The only downside of an Andy McNab thriller is that you also know
exactly what you're going to get. Aggressor, the latest in the ex-
SAS man's bestselling fictional outings, turns on his creation Nick
Stone - also ex-SAS, working covert operations for MI6.

Ploughing through acres of taciturn jokes, cliches about foreign
languages, foreign attire, foreign people and nicknames, the book is
going to be either one you love - or just leave.

What it has got going for it is that the action is fast-paced, the
language simple, the read quick and easy and the plot uncomplicated
enough to finish in a day (which I did). And that's all it needs to
do, in fact.

Literary snobbery aside, Aggressor is a good read: like the SAS it
gets in there, does the job and leaves before you've had much time
to notice.

Nick Stone is bumming around the beaches of Australia in a battered
VW camper van, a German hippie-chick in tow.

Hooking up with his old mate Charlie, Stone is forced to jump ship
to Turkey after his pal goes missing. Like the animal crawling off
to die, Charlie is off to perform That One Last Job before he
succumbs to disease. (When told of his condition, Stone/McNab
says: "Did it mean Charlie was going to end up buzzing around in a
wheelchair and sounding like a Dalek?") In one of those deniable ops
so beloved of thriller writers, the downpayment is going to be
enough to cover Charlie's retirement expenses and keep the missus
happy when he's gone. Of course, things go wrong.

The action shifts to Georgia, where the US is heavily involved in a
Partnership for Peace programme (McNab barely hides his own cynicism
towards American realpolitik) and where a local politician is
getting in the way. When things go wrong Stone and Charlie spend the
rest of the book running, brawling, being captured, tortured,
escaping, being captured again and generally finding themselves at
the mercy of the powers that be.

It's a good enough yarn, full of travelogue-like descriptions (McNab
apparently travels incountry before working on these books) and
plenty of nuts-andbolts soldier stuff to keep the armchair warriors
happy. The villain is totally and enjoyably villainous, and American
to boot.

I'm not quite sure what McNab's female following - 45 per cent -
will make of all this but it's good escapism.

DTO, I think not. I only hug. To death if neccessary.

Erik, nice meeting you.

Thanks Lisle, good article :-) We'll see what 'we' think of it when the book arrives.

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 21 Nov 2005 21:35)

Lynn you've done this before, who's DTO? Why do you keep calling me him? That Bastard was downed sometime ago.

HAHAHA "Bastard" being a very "large" character in Aggressor. Ah, a bit of a tease, Nick makes sure he pays for his sins.

And please Lynn, I don't hug, I've heard the odor is, well?

>>By Reighnman   (Monday, 21 Nov 2005 23:14)

Reighnman, I was not talking to you - what I was saying was a private message to my good pal DTO. The odor is....?? Ever heard of false evidence? ;-) Finished the book btw... awesome!!

Also means I'm book-less...... AGGRESSOR Where Art Thou??

>>By Lynn   (Tuesday, 22 Nov 2005 09:36)

Say what you like, Andy is back in my good books again !! Today I received my copy of Agressor and guess what ?? It had an add in the box for a chocolate weekend in some hotel ... oh heaven !! He knows how to charm a lady :-)))

A sales hint might be, a box of strawberry filled bonbons around mothersday ?

>>By your logic, I guess I am supporting alcoholism, infidelity, suicide, Communism, and Castro when I read Hemingway!!
Uh, Erik (btw, what are you, a Viking? It's spelled 'Eric') I too enjoy Hemingway and I support all of the things you listed, infidelity and alcoholism in particular. Your point supports my point, which is always nice.
Thank you.
Note: All points made by me are rhetorical; it's hilarious to watch you get defensive. Try again, Erik the Red or whatever your Viking name is.
My new topic: Castro--man or Angel?

>>By Just Jon   (Thursday, 24 Nov 2005 01:35)

Yes, 'm an angel, thanks Jon.
Btw - in Dutch Eric is Erik too - we have our famous-against-his-will Erik O.

So June 2006 - we can still look forward to something. Which brings me to another matter:
We know McNabs maths suck but counting the books Aggressor MIGHT have been the last Nick Stone, so there's been speculation in the past what would happen to Nick in the last (?) book.
I've been patient way above sanity-level and I've had enough.

I've developped a spoiler trauma in the past so anyone who has finished Aggressor pleeeaaaase FLORK ME !!!!!!! Is there reason to suspect this is not the last Stone?????

School which dares wins SAS hero as guest

IT WASN'T JK Rowling, Bob Dylan or Salman Rushdie. But the boys at University College School were not disappointed when the identity of their much-hailed mystery guest was finally revealed

The world famous author who spoke and signed books at the school's arts festival on Wednesday was none other than SAS hero Andy McNab.
(...)
Most of McNab's millions of readers will never get the chance to meet their hero and the boys at USC in Frognal made the most of this rare opportunity.

=============
Fine, rub it in ;-)
=============

And for all those who ever wondered about the tough-sounding name Andy McNab, he chose it because it fits across a book cover and he remembered a Pacman computer game called Munching McNab.

Hehehe

I have to laugh Lynn. Not even Patricia Cornwell can get rid of Kay Scarpetta, and she hasn't written a decent story for a decade. Typical women author! Right?

I have to say Andy has got a long way to go before Nick will hit the shit for real. But you never know, the ending of Aggressor certainly did change Nicks history forever. "That Bastard" or is it a Chick?

>>By Reighnman   (Friday, 25 Nov 2005 18:46)

I think F-troop will go into of mourning, if Nick is "taken away".. What shall we do then? Take AM and demand a rewrite? ^^

btw.. AM has more pages on gnooks, than J.K Rowling herself *evil grin*

>>By Elendar   (Saturday, 26 Nov 2005 20:43)

I swear - I'll call him Andy McNab.. Why do I always use AM? :( forgive me troopers!

>>By Elendar   (Saturday, 26 Nov 2005 20:51)

when has freedom of speech and an opinion been taken away from us, can someone answer me that question as it seems, it ok to rant on about stuff. but god forbid you give an opinion on a book...
A question was asked on greymansland a few days ago regarding would this be teh last nickstone book, and had anyone read the novel to which i gave a honest answer having read the book, making sure not to give any spoilers away.
then i'm told that i have given spoliers away which i had not and never would, its a bit like waiting in line for months to see a film so that some jerk can come to up to you and say hey buddy the films sucks the aliens get it.
So to be told by a fellow f-trooper that i gave away spoilers when i didnt well that pretty much sucks....Big time......
a question was asked by a fellow f-trooper... so i said i think taht like all good authors sometimes its good to bring in a new main charcter and have a fresh set of books. take Tom Clancy and teh jack ryan series early on jack did teh running around no its clark who is teh hero in most cases.
Sometimes a author needs to have new characters , and to give the old ones a rest for a while, think how bored we wuld be if every film was a james bond one and played by teh same actor, its nice to have a change..
So when i said i didnt enjoy teh book and found it quick to start with but it got slow and i found it very hard to get back to reaing it, thats my onot anyone elses.. i didnt like deep black all that much dark water was good, but i havent enjoyed teh last two my opinion...its called freedom of speech ..... And if you want spoilers just read the review on this page ..

George Best Milligoon, not everyone in the world knows him - so if you speak of the unfortunate death of 'George' this could be misunderstood.

>>By Lynn   (Monday, 28 Nov 2005 09:23)

Dear Milligoon...

I am very sorry, and I do apologize for misunderstanding the comments you made elsewhere. Since your comments regarding the demise of "George" were followed by your comments on Aggressor, it was my fault for not guessing that you might be talking about a different George. Unfortunately for both of us, I assumed “George” was the character in AM's book rather than someone in real life, and in the UK. My misunderstanding, obviously poor communications.

You are most definitely entitled to your opinion on whether you liked or dislike particular books. My mistaken contention was that I thought you'd spoiled a major element of the plotline in AM's latest, and since I'm still anxiously awaiting my copy here in the US, I was quite "emotional" when I made my comments in Chatzy.

Again, I’m very sorry for the misunderstanding. Hopefully, in the future, we’ll remember this and be more clear in our postings… :o)

McNabber live on the BBC2 Jeremy Vine programme today discussing the nude Marine fisticuffs shown extensively on News bulletins last weekend. He says this sort of thing is common in the armed forces because we are training fighters and killers, not nurses. But he thinks this particular incident went too far and that the NCO should be disciplined. There are in fact at least two SBS biogs which describe similar activities though these seem to be attributed to the men themselves instigating the fun.
