I first read Riders six years ago and was recently asked what is the significance of the tile? The answer is, I don't know! Who can tell me?

I would like to say how much tim winton is infuriating and crap
his books make little to no sense, and i hope the pony-tailed little bastard catches an unpleasant venereal disease and his wang falls off. Please die, don't ever write another book again, and stick a fork in your face for writing "the riders"

PLEASE DIE HORRIBLY

P.S; DIE

You guys are so unkind.... even if u think such things, u should keep them to urself. Anyway, I think that Tim Winton writes beautifully and is very knowledgeable. Am currently reading the story of Cloudstreet, a great read! :)

there's actually a lot of meaning to The Riders. it's about people. it's about Ireland. it's important. and Winton is a damn good writer. i accept that u hate him or whatever (funny, ,though, cos u can't actually hate someone u haven't met before). just giving my point of view. and the title? The Riders. what does it mean? well if u define what a rider means in relation to the book and then later, life, it makes a lot of sense. a rider is someone who is looking for something, waiting - just like the riders at the castle. just like jennifer - looking for her artisitic/creative self. just like connor - although, he lost himself. and Scully, what a character. was he a rider? was he searching? yes. but not necessarily for himself. in the end, though, he discovered who he was. and chose not to be a rider. he chose not to be like the men at the castle. waiting, hoping. so there u go. a mon avis - in my opinion. take it or leave it - i don't care. english literature is amazing.

Ne one who thinks tim is a bad writer has obviously never read one of his books. And those of u lil faggots who say we should die for likeing him, well more so U should die. Ur just racist to the Autralians, and no I'm not an Autralian. I don't even know id I spelled it right.

I read The Riders this summer as a book group title. It made me very angry and frustrated. I went to book group with the purpose of blasting the book.

The entire group disliked the book and the characters and the woman who suggested we read it apologized. That said, we had one of our most interesting and in-depth discussions to date. We wondered who the Riders actually were and what their role was in the book. We wondered what did happen to Jennifer. We theorized that perhaps Scully was abusive and just had not realized it yet.

Now, months after reading it, I really might have to put it on my short list of favorites. Interesting how time can change opinions. I will probably try to read one of his others. Any suggestions?

Tim Winton is a wonderful writer. Many of those who do not appreciate him obviously don't understand his writing...

"he is a french loving faggot , tree hugging hippie muthafucking bullshit writer"- jazza.

Thanks for that jazza... that was, umm... really intelligent and insightful :s

I've recently read 'Breath' and loved it, I enjoy the way he evokes the W.A. coast and his characterization of his protagonists

I really enjoyed the riders.... though I thought winton did indulge himself in his writing and his characters in the amsterdam sequence. Those railing against him, are you sixteen year old pimply boys who are quasi intelligent-but hate prescribed reading? What is the source of this anger? I was angry with the main character for following myth...are you angry for having to study it?
I am really curious why jazza and etc.....have such an extreme hatred of the writing......but would appreciate a bit of illuminiation.....I don't really
understand the allusions to his character also outline by many bloggers. Give me a concrete reason.
