Susan's 'Laws of the Hunt' are so much fun. They are like taking a motorcycle ride with that boy from the wrong side of the tracks. Her heroes are the Nighthawks, or the cops of the vampire world, who keep the regular vampires from getting out of hand. The Nighthawks used to be human psychics, then were vampires themselves before making the transformation to Nighthawk. Although both the vampires and Nighthawks in this series subsist mainly off the blood of their slaves and Companions(human psychics destined to make the change to vampire) they do kill and eat their prey during the occasional Hunt. The Nighthawks have the duty of calling the Hunt for the vampires and assigning the prey(usually human criminals) and when the Laws are broken the Nighthawks Hunt vampires. An additional twist is the problem that Companions must leave their vampire or Nighthawk lover when they change to vampires themselves, due to one of their Laws, which is never explained except that they have a kind of religious belief that they are cursed and it is part of their punishment to lose the ones they love. Also, the Companions are doing their darnedest to start a revolution that will give them more rights, including the right to stay with their beloveds.
The vampire romance novels 'Crave the Night' 'I Burn for You' 'I Hunger for You' 'I Thirst for You' are fun, if not very deep. Like most romance novels they don't get into much more than how these two people meet, argue copiously, have sex and declare eternal love, but the writing is bubbly, clever and fun, and the world(what little we see of it) is intriguing. I'm looking forward to 'Master of Darkness'. If it lives up to my expectations, it will be the best of the series.
