It is really exciting to discuss about the book.I read the book very recently. It is still very fresh in my memory. It is one the most amazingly ever written book on human weakness called "Pity". I loved it. Because as we are all aware of one unavoidable weaness of human nature is falling for pity.

Well, I wish to participate in more discussion. Please contact me on my email addrss: chandragudi0@lycos.com

Recently came upon a copy of Beware of Pity. In English.

Begins dramatically and interest is held up to and including the revealing details of the crippled girl's father's sordid past and background.

Alas for me the story petered out --or rather became extenuated- until the final, almost inevitable(obvious) let-down- when the soldier agrees to walk away.

Still, a moving and important novel, to one who admires Zweig more than words can express, yet one who almost never reads a novel!

Perhaps the problem lies therein.

Salute to Zweig a true 20th Century European, most civilized man who, seeing no future for humankind, felt obliged along with his wife to take their own lives.

A tremendous tragedy.

THERE'S NO OTHER WRITER AS ZWEIG. IT WAS A SHOCK FOR ME "KNOW" HIM RECENTLY, READING SIX OR SEVEN OF HIS BOOKS IN THE LAST DAYS.¡¡

Stefan Zweig is my favorite writer since my school time. Now that I am in my 30's I still enjoy
reading him and for me he is still a master in writing.Thru him I was intoduced to Erasmus of
Rotterdam who I also think is a great personality.I had the chance to visit his house in Bruxelles.Nowadays maybe is not that popular but I insist reading his book Praise of Folly.
Its an honor for me to know about these two great personalities.
