Nelson Demille

Would anyone care to discuss Up Country or The Lion's Game? I'm relatively new to reading DeMille but thoroughly enjoyed these two books so far!

I enjoy Mr. Demille's writing probably more so than any other modern day author for his sacastic wit. You must read books Plum Island and Gold Coast, or General's Daughter if you want to truly appreciate his wit (though Up Country did a good job too).

Often I can read one his books several times and enjoy it each and every time, though I do enjoy savouring a new one.......saving it for a holiday where I can imerse myself into it (I read Up Country last year on the beach in the Dominican!).

The Charm School and The Gold Coast are DeMille's best efforts. No one compares when it comes to dialog. Of these two, the sarcastic wit shows up more in The Gold Coast.

i ahev now read the lions game and up country if you still want to discuss it AIB

>>By christina   (Saturday, 26 Jul 2003 13:52)

Excellent, Christina! Welcome back, too.

So, tell me, tell me -- Did you find them worth the read? Did you prefer one to the other? (It is a bit like comparing apples and oranges, but there are commonalities, so I think we can still compare.) Do you have a pref btwn Corey and Brenner? Did you get used to Corey's "anyway"?

Loads of questions! Start anywhere! Maybe we can get this board moving the way we have triggered ones elsewhere!

lol yeah we can tlk!.

i found the characters near enough the same but i prefered corey and i didnt much take to susan.
i prefered the book up country in itself though because it had snippets from the army which is what im interested in and i dont normaly wander away from army books etc but the lions game was a good read. the most interesting criminals are the smart kind dont you agree?

do you know what the other books are like and if they are all based on the same personality.

Just finished The Lion's Game. Really enjoyed ND's style. Good story telling and pacing. JC's humor is great! Now I have to go buy the rest of the his books. Thank heavens the used bookstore here has a good selection. ;)

Oh, and as far as the "anyway", I loved it! I do that all the time. :D

>>By Dare   (Monday, 8 Mar 2004 03:33)

VBG, Dare!

TLG is one of my favourite books and John Corey one of my very favourite characters, mainly, I'm sure, because of ND's wickedly sarcastic humour! But enough about that for now...

Hahaha! :o)

>>By am-i-binned   (Monday, 8 Mar 2004 12:34)

I just read Plum Island - it's excellent reading and very funny - the same characters who appear in TLG - John Corey and Beth.

Haven't read any others yet, but think Up Country sounds a good bet.

regards,

Very cool how we all keep bumping into each other! I love it! :o)

Im struggling to find any other books written in the same funny style as plum isalnd, the lions game and up country (ive read those ones) Can anyone name some more, lol help guys!!

>>By christina   (Monday, 8 Mar 2004 17:31)

Plum Island is next for me. Didn't realise it was the prequel to TLG. :P

ND gives JC a great sense of humour and an acerbic in-your-face frankness. ND handles the 1st/3rd person pov's very well too, as well as getting into the mind of his antagonist and presenting it to the reader w/o melodrama.

I've finished The Lion's Game, Plum Island, Cathedral and The General's Daughter so far and now on Spencerville. I like ND's work, but most of his female protagonists get on my nerves. His heros are interesting but my favorite so far is Burke from Cathedral.

Oh my, F-Troop in command of DeMille posts...so, will post a short and to the point sticky label...

I guess his being a member of American MENSA enlightens somewhat on the "literary" content of his books! His being a Vietnam Vet having provided ground-force knowledge of combat situations...One can't beat real-life experience when it comes to authenticity within novels, as so oft quote on the AM board...

Interesting interview attached to this URL:

I trust you didn't (all of you) just discovered Nelson DeMille books in March 200! (?)

Be good, and don't do anything I wouldn't.

Oh Devy dear,
I'm sure any Demille writing is much to simple for a person of your esteem. IE: Lee Child. I'm sure your copies can be found on the give- away shelves?
Hard to believe the F-Troopers have other intrests hey Dev.??? God forbid. Only if you left them to discuss in peace. What a world what a world. Thats from the wizerd of Oz, Dev.

The last one of his I read was Spencerville a few weeks ago, a bit different to his other books, but still a brilliant read. His imagery is what makes the books for me. Mind you I'm still a sucker for a laugh but Spencerville doesn't have many of those!

I love all nelsons books..im only a recent reader of his and i started off reading The Lions Game..it was pre 9/11 and as other ppl have said it was really startling when 9/11 happened i couldnt believe how accruate the book was. From then i read Plum Island and worked my way back. Ive never read a character so much as John Corey! a brilliant character..i like kate too i think she's better than Beth even though she didnt get a look in. I emailed Nelson to see if he would write some more John Corey books when he was younger and on the streets..ah well roll on Night Fall i cant wait!!!

>>By IrishPaul   (Friday, 13 Aug 2004 20:25)

I read Nightfall a few years ago and I just finished Plum Island a few days ago. They're both awesome. I love John Corey's sense of humor and his devil-may-care boldness, and the way DeMille fleshes out his characters to each be their own person. Years ago, I was very into Lawrence Sanders mysteries too. They also have an irreverent sense of humor. I can't wait now to read Gold Coast and more of DeMille's books. I so wish Plum Island would be made into a movie!
