I liked the characters of Anna and Vronsky. Even though Vronsky went for a married woman and Anna abandoned her child. I guess she was looking for more than maternal love. I really liked the characters of Kitty and Levin. I think Levin's thinking was very interesting and Kitty's innocence was rare in the book. I didn't like Stiva (anna's brother). I didn't see honesty in that man. What man is honest after cheating on his wife many times and lieing about it?

Which book are you discussing?

I couldnt get through Anna Karenina! I didnt like the characters that much. I hope that doesnt say something bad about me, the avid little reader that I am....

I know I loved the first sentence of the book. I cant remember it now. It had something to do with 'family'.

I think Anna Karenina was a brilliant portrayal of what goes inside a person's mind. It was an external as well as internal narrative.

i have notread anna karenina but have managed to get throgh war and peece.
considering i usully read about one book a week it took me about a month to finish this one.
that is not to say the book is not good only that it requires a lot of thinking while you read it.
it does give you a lot of inside as how poeple in the russia back then were thinking and it does introduces the free thinking to the nation.
i am not suprised russia history is so rich but poeple had suffered great opresion for mileniums and still do. Submision is just ingrained in to them.
if i go by what i learn from that book even the nobility was unable to thing clearly for them selfs.
if you are a fan of quick action i am sory but this is a book writen for poeple with time, there is no hurry so take it nice and slow.

I wonder if any of you might have opinions on the short work, "Master and Man"? I apologize, but my ignorance excludes me from any serious discusion of "Anna..."

I don't like Tolstoj. I find him too conservative and much different from my way of thinking. I am not denying he is a good writer, but he doesn't make me feel that closeness that you feel when you like a book, when it makes you feel like you're not alone in the world. He makes me feel more like I am reading someone else's letters. I didn't read too much of him though, just Ana Karenina and some other book I can't remember title of.

Right now I am taking a course on Tolstoy and love him. I tried reading some lighter fiction this week and was amazed at the lack of depth. Someone commented on Vlonsky, I think that he is a despicable character. Amazing how his crowd felt falling in love with an available woman was a bore but encouraged his trying to make a good woman an adulterer. What is more amazing is that this was wrtiien over 100 years ago and people have not really basically changed at all.
