I agree! The Mars books were great. I just bought the Years of Rice and Salt. Can't wait to get started, but I'll have to wait until after finals ( I am in grad school).

rice and salt is ok, but not nearly as good as mars... did you read the martians, or any of the pacific edge books? all excellent.
the mars books made me want to go to mars... can you imagine the freedom of starting a society from the ground up?
and the tech was very cool.

Have just read his most recent, Galileo's Dream, and one of his early ones, Escape from Kathmandu. Even the early books are maturely written, deep, complex and funny.
