greatest writer alive. has a way of scrutinizing and portraying emotion that is unique and remarkable. knows his characters unbelievably well. Requiem and the room are my favourites

Selbys writing is addicting once you read one of his books you are forced to read them all. Im not a reader but his books to hard to put down. He has now become my favorite author.

Like everyone else on this board, I greatly appreciate Selby's contribution to literature. But, I'm struggling with one thing: most of the writers I hear/read talking about him say that he is the voice of American anguish or something the like, (I don't necessarily agree because there is a duality at work here) yet he is not very popular in the US, save Last Exit, why is this? Could it be the old "Mirror to society" cliche, is his work just so unsettling because it rings so true in the depths of each one of us? Or what?
Let me know what you think.

Requiem For A Dream was a painful but exceedingly brilliant novel.

I only just finished reading Last Exit ..... what an interesting style that guy had .... what a fascinating story he told .... guess what? I know one of the characters and one of Cubbys old chums - the guy referred to as Fat Tony .... (in fact, I am sort of related to him by some twists and turns of marriage) ..... It was a great thrill, and absolutely amazing to sit and discuss the book and Selby with him over the last couple of weeks when I visited Adelaide (Australia guys, get a grip!) ... got some great insight for the world that generated Selby and the souls and themes that drifted in and out of his novels ....This guy features in the biography on Selby (along with Lou Reed et al) & grew up & hung out with him through that whole period .....
If anyone is interested in contacting him, I will pass your details on & leave it to him to contact you (or not) ..... he is not particularly well .... interestingly enough, he is fading quickly with a chronic lung ailment - yeah ... just like Cubby and the other guy (Salvatore ?? or something .... wrote a couple of books, one I read a bit of was something along the lines of "observations of ordinary objects") ... must be something in the air over in the USA ....
