Eca was a great writer. He was one of those persons one could truly discuss some as simple as a the weather and still be interesting, I believe. The Maias a masterpiece. The duality between romanticism and realism is superb. Its fascinating how Joao da Ega speaks about writing this book and never does it in the end, always delaying and delaying. In the final chapter of the book Carlos assumes himspelf as a romantic, inferiors individuals that lead themselves in life by feelings and not by reason. If one takes a close look at romanticism one realizes that being romantic is in fact lure for someone one could not have, is the pain and the suffering around love. When something is romantic is not because it has a happy ending often its because it doesn't; though the literary experts know that romanticism has two sides: Locus horrendus and Locus Amoenus. The Maias is a romantic piece as Eca is a Romantic writer, one of the best in the portuguese literature.
