Bernard Cornwell

Forum

What can one say about Bernard Cornwell?...well, he is most famed for the Sharpe novels, but the books which i first started with are the Winter King Trilogy, and Stonehenge.
Although for the most part they are fictitious novels, there is a good deal of historical background research into the names of places, celtic and early briton mythology (which features heavily),
techniques of warfare, and a heavy smattering of our ancestors religious beliefs and superstitions. Bernard Cornwell obviously uses conjecture for some of the parts in the book (it has to be tied together) but he includes a bibliography/appendix at the end of the novels so that he can explain where he researched his material and how many archeaologists and anthropologists come to their presently held beliefs about the past.
Wonderful reading here, always with twists which are unpredictable, and thrilling battle scenes!!! Myth and superstition combine (and portray the battle between early christianity and paganism- in the W.K. Trilogy) and the romance? All i can say for that is read it yourself- in the W.K. Trilogy, the romance and heart twinges it creates is enough to make even the most unsentimental people feel both heavy and light in the heart at the same time! :-)
Hope you enjoy reading this genius's works as much as i have!

I loved Sharpe in India but all the others tend to have a sameness to them. The Archer's Tale series was riveting.
