Arundhati Roy

Forum

Urges one to become an activist over and over again. I am moved by the incredible depth and consistenct in her arguments and intimidated by her knowledge of global issues. I had hoped to articulate these when she spoke at Wits University on the 23 April 2003, but couldn't. The logic with which the global trends are argued places a lot challenges at our doors and reading and listening to Arundhati has spurred me to make the little difference I can.

I haven't read the pamphlets yet, but I did read her novel. Her language is staggeringly beautiful. She invents a world within it. And she can render pain with such a gentle but deeply hurting accuracy that sometime I just had to put the book away for a couple of days before I could continue.
If the essays are anything like that, I'd love to read them but I fear I'd almost choke in the process. I will try soon, though not right now.

"The God of Small Things" is absolutely superb. Arundhati Roy literally invents a new style and her rendering of emotion takes your breath away. in my mind, the characters residing in the book might as well be real people, they are rendered so realistically. if only i could write like that!

Arundhati Roy is a magnificant writer and speaker and a wonderful warrior. I think that she has been marginalized in the US by placing her with icons of the "left". I do not think that she writes or speaks within the context of liberal vs conservative. I do think that she speaks in the context of right and wrong and stands (albeit 5'2" and sometimes wears platform shoes) far and above other writers who try and work in her arena. In the interest of jusitce she should be "mainstreamed " in the US.

She says what others were saying for years in a fantastic language. Become an icon among the acivists, just like any other political readers.
