Alastair Reynolds

Forum

Been reading all of Reynolds' books recently and just can't get enough of them. Reynolds, Iain M. Banks & Neal Stephenson seem to do it for me. Anyone out there also hot on these guys and have any recommendations - I'm lost for good books, and really don't want to waste time sifting through the bad ones...

Thanks in advance.

Just finished Absolution Gap, bought it while visiting London to get the jump on all the rest of us stateside folks. :) Phenomenal ending to a phenomenal trilogy. The book could have used another 50 pages at the end, I thought it felt a little compressed. The book is LONG (well, it's no Quicksilver...), but it's well worth the read and an extra 50 pages would have been a joy. But it sets up nicely for another trilogy, I think.

All his other books have been excellent too, I really enjoyed the diamond dogs novella. The descriptions of the brain teasers in the Spire and of the transformations of the protagonists were just enthralling. Best sci-fi I've read in a long time.

I wish Mr. Reynolds could reach into his prose and pull out some of his fantastic devices to allow himself to write books faster!

Sloppy: I haven't read any Banks yet, despite countless recommendations. Stephenson is a perennial favourite. Quicksilver was a little slow, but still interesting.

If you like Reynolds you might enjoy Peter F. Hamilton as well (if you haven't read any yet that is!). Try starting off with Reality Disfunction.

For something slightly different try The Dark Fields by Alan Glynn. It's his first book but is utterly excellent. More thriller than Sci-Fi but one to keep you up at night.

Banstyle - I agree. I can't wait till the next Reynolds comes out. Does you know when that is? I can't seem to find his personal website but I know it's out there. It's got his email address on it (might be out of date by now) but when I sent him an email I got one back in about a day. Very impressed...

My personal favorite was Chasm City but Diamond Dogs was a good one as well.
